As war between the West and Islamic State escalates, little is known of IS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi. Is destroying Al-Baghdadi the key to defeating terror? This report explores the ISIS reign of terror in Syria.
"Al-Baghdadi has only appeared in public once, and after that never again", describes Hani. Like so many Syrians, Hani fled from the brutality of the Islamic State after they captured his hometown of Raqqa. It is not only in Raqqa that the lives of citizens are in danger. While Sinjar is one of the first major cities that ISIS has had to give up, after their retreat the horrendous consequences of their reign of terror became clear. Mass open graves filled with bodies revealed the remains of anyone who did not share their beliefs. Captured by US forces in Iraq in 2004 and detained at Camp Bucca, Baghdadi has gone on to build a powerful and remorseless caliphate intent on world Jihad. "Al-Baghdadi wants to be portrayed as the religious leader of this new nation. But he wants to be invisible. This only increases his appeal", explains an expert. In response to their growing strength, Western powers have increased military retaliation in Syria, but this war cannot be fought with weapons alone; it is far more complex. As one expert describes, "you can't bomb an ideology...if you try to bomb an ideology you will only reinforce it".

Mass shootings in schools and churches have become a regular occurrence in America. Christians in the south have responded by arming themselves, calling upon their God-given right to firearms.
God, Gospel and Guns. For many American Christians, this is a holy trinity. "We as Christian people can be people of faith and also be people of firearms. No contradiction", says Pastor Ken Pegano. With an unshakable faith in both God and guns, Ken advocates the carrying of firearms and encourages his congregation to do so too, even by holding raffles to win guns during services. The intertwining of faith and weaponry permeates life in the Bible Belt, where many believe that their right to carry a weapon is granted by God and it is the only way for them to protect themselves. One churchgoer explains, "Church is always first and then we always go to the gunnery and just shoot and interact as a family. And family is key, and God and guns and stuff". Even specialised 'Christian' weapons engraved with scriptures are being produced. Yet as mass shootings continue to occur at a worrying rate, others call for tougher regulations. "As Christians, if we are going to ask the nation to be less violent, then we should demonstrate that", says the granddaughter of a victim of the recent Charleston Church shooting. Amongst all these churches in Kentucky there stands a small Mosque where they do not believe weapons and prayer go together. "We would be labelled as terrorists if we gave away guns at the mosque", says the Imam. "And personally, I would never allow that. This is place where people come in and worship and connect to God, it is not a place to come in and learn how to fight".

Islamic State is undoubtedly a real and exponentially growing threat. But who are the key players in this monstrous group, and why are they achieving so much success? This comprehensive report explains the formation of ISIS and the process by which it has been funded, armed and equipped.
The rebranding of ISIS as 'ISIL' by the USA denotes the expansion of the extremist group beyond Iraq and into the Levant, reflecting its similarly expanding power, peril, and prowess. As political analyst Hussein Royvaran explains, “The US regards it as a security threat which must be destroyed by bombing, whereas ISIL is a social phenomenon, rather than military”. With strong intelligence, a tight structure, and a powerful propaganda machine, this group is now the world’s wealthiest terrorist organisation.
Yet ISIL owes its strength to countries who supported the group when it benefited them to do so. Turkey provided the bulk of ISIL’s funds, logistics, training and arms in the fight against Assad, whilst an agreement between ISIL and the Kurdistan government permitted ISIL to conquer the Iraqi city Mosul in July 2014 while allowing the Kurds to take the oil rich city of Kirkuk. As journalist Pepe Escobar explains, “My informed guess is that more or less they divided the territory. They made an agreement”. The USA paradoxically poured resources into moderate rebels during the group’s early stages to fight against the Soviet Union, and years later confronts the same men as extremists, proclaiming war a new enemy: “The United States will… degrade and ultimately destroy the terrorist group known as ISIL” declares President Obama.
Once a small militant faction, ISIL has now attracted over 12,000 radicalised militants. Following the brutal beheadings of journalists and aid workers, the group is succeeding in its quest to provoke Western powers, and swell its ranks with vulnerable youth. As Escobar notes, “The way they edited the beheading didn’t have to show blood, didn’t have to be aggressive – it was a very good piece of filmmaking, just suggesting fear”. This informative doc reveals the subtle processes by which ISIL have emerged, and questions the policies and mistakes that have permitted its evolution.

Captagon, a highly addictive amphetamine, is the drug of choice for Syria's revolutionaries. We trace the drug trail, from its users on battlefields, along Lebanese smuggling routes, to the kingpins at the top of the chain.
"If the commander told me to attack a military barracks, I will do it with a brave heart and without any fear", a Syrian fighter describers the powerful and intoxicating effects of Captagon. Combatants on both sides are reportedly turning to the stimulant to help them keep fighting. Tracing the smuggling routes back to Lebanon and unique access to a factory where the drug is produced reveals the scale of the drug's popularity. Although they risk life sentences, workers at the Captagon factory are producing "half a million to a million pills per week", a large proportion destined for Syria's fighters. And at the very top of the chain, a wealthy kingpin explains how the "800 million dollar industry" is directly fuelling the Syrian conflict, as profits are funnelled back to militias on the front lines.

South Korea is home to a thriving $20 billion private education industry. But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice.
"You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success?

To many of us, China looms large and scary. At least that's a view from the outside looking in. But what do China's own people think about their country? We visit the old capital of Nanjing to hear their stories.
China is in flux yet again. For years the path to prosperity here seemed clear, with more freedom on the way as well. Yet nobody saw President Xi Jinping coming. Xi Jinping has taken a sword to the political elite, smashed dissent and the economy is heading in a completely new direction, with tech companies growing rapidly. "Fifteen years ago not a single Chinese company could have developed a mobile phone", explains Wang Jipeng, a software entrepreneur whose company has grown from 10 to 2000 staff in the last ten years. Not everyone is happy though: house prices are rising, and many have become victims of development officials who force residents into leaving. The President's anti-corruption drive is another source of controversy, and the use of interrogation or 'shuang gui' has been described as a "breach of human rights" by a former state prosecutor. Meanwhile, an environmental activist explains the improvements made in reducing pollution: "We're in a better position now when compared to the past. We've had many successful experiences regulating factories." Despite youthful optimism however, air pollution still remains an unrelenting pressure. A snapshot of China and its people's experiences, who live on the brink of uncertainty.

As climate change continues to threaten our future, we travel around the world to explore the ways that young entrepreneurs are coming up with creative solutions, offering a fresh and positive insight into this global issue.
"It's like putting more ice into your gin and tonic. If you put more ice in the level goes up", explains Professor Peter Convey. Almost 90% of Antarctica's glaciers are melting as a result of rising temperatures, causing sea levels to rise dangerously. "We're measuring the water getting higher and higher every year. To have our political leadership ignoring it is ridiculous". In the face of such danger, young entrepreneurs all over the world are creating new ways to save the planet. Giant solar factories and wind farms are becoming much more common, as both governments and individuals wake up to the crisis. As one scientist explains, "We need to get off the curse of fossil fuels, we have to stop cooking the planet."

The invasion of Iraq has fuelled anti-western sentiment in Saudi Arabia, strengthening grassroots’ support for terrorist organisations.
Allan Gerson has sued Saudi charities, banks and members of the royal family for two trillion dollars. He accuses them of financing the September 11 attacks and Bali bombing: “We have seen evidence of money that went from Saudi sources through various entities in Europe to support terrorist cells.” These allegations are strenuously denied by Crown Prince Abdullah, ruler of Saudi Arabia. However, there is a growing gulf between the governing elite and their subjects and many Saudis are angered by America’s unwavering support for Israel. “The more the Palestinians are oppressed and the more the Americans support Israel, the more popular bin Laden and his like becomes,” explains Saudi writer Sulayman Al-Hattlan. “Osama stood up for people who were quiet ... He told the States I'm not afraid of you,” admires one student. Her friend agrees: “If Bush makes us choose between our religion or hurting our people, we're going to choose our religion.” Images of the bombing of Baghdad can only galvanise support for Islamic fundamentalists prepared to bank-roll Al-Qaeda.

As ISIS continue to make territorial gains in the Middle East, they are also becoming a dynamic presence online. This report looks at one recent campaign video, designed to disseminate their radical manifesto.
"These are your passports, O Tyrants all over the world", one anonymous jihadist declares to a baying crowd as he spears a pile of the documents with a machete. Within the organisation's mission to establish a unitary caliphate across the region, such credentials are obsolete: mere vestiges of a by-gone age of national boundaries and rival political identities. "I swear by Allah, we will cleanse the Arabian peninsula of you, you defiled ones." Films such as this, depicting the brutal imposition of a supposedly utopian Islamic supra-state - often by means of summary executions and banning opposing sects from public life - are a sign of the increasing sophistication of ISIS' propaganda strategy. They depict well-armed, organised militants, and are cause for concern for Iraqi ex-pats struggling to reach relatives back home. "ISIS have forgotten the real religion, and now they are full of hate and revenge", says Salahaddin al-Beati, who has lived in Switzerland since 1996. With voices from all sides of the conflict, this report offers a chilling insight into a markedly 21st century insurgency.

For over a year Kurdish forces have united in defence against bloody IS attacks. So how have Islamic State still managed to recruit hundreds of young Kurds to fight for the Caliphate against their own families?
"There are Kurdish families in Halabja whose sons are in IS and their hearts are broken, but I'll never go to their funerals", says the grieving mother of Kaihan Borhan, a Kurd who died fighting with the Peshmarga against IS. Her family is distraught that the people responsible for his death could well be Kurdish nationals. "I have a friend whose brother died fighting for ISIS", says Kaihan's brother. "I never grieved for him and my friend cannot bear to look me in the eye." In this report we see the path to extremism that many Kurds have taken. Dissatisfaction at the Kurdish Intelligence service, Asayish's persecution of Muslims and domestic grievances are being skilfully exploited by IS propaganda, led by Khattab Al-Kurdi and his Saladin Brigade. "With God's permission we will sow the seeds of the Caliphate throughout our land", says the Kurdish Khattab, who has been one of the most persuasive forces in luring Kurds towards the Caliphate. Even with Khattab's reported death in April 2015, the threat of more Kurds joining IS seems unlikely to diminish, with a new Kurdish Imam carrying the rhetoric forward.

North Korea was identified as part of the axis of evil by George Bush. Taking an archive-based trip through North Korea's recent history, we find out it's probably a fair assessment.
'The Real Dr Evil' explores the rise of Kim Jong-il after his father, Kim II- sung's, death. His father, who is referred to as 'Great Leader' by North Korea, was a highly praised and well-respected leader -the founder of North Korea and commander of the fifth largest standing army in the world.
Following the death of Kim II- sung, Kim Jong- il was left to fulfil the position of his father, however many doubted he had the right skills to follow in his footsteps. He was seen as a black sheep as rarely taken seriously. Everyone felt that Kim Jong- il would struggle to keep up to his father's standards. Were they right?
'The Real Dr Evil' follows the fascinating journey of Kim Jong- il -- from his childhood experiences, through his education, to his controversial leadership. When the great economic collapse of the mid-90s struck, Jong-il left many of his citizens to suffer. But as many began to lose hope, Jung-il began approaching many western countries for help. Many perceived this distress signal positively, others did not.

In Qatar, 4000 workers will die to put on the 2022 Football World Cup. This staggering figure indicates the slave-like conditions the builders of football's most expensive construction project are enduring.
Workers won't speak out for fear of being fired, but for some, hopelessness outweighs the fear. Qatari labourers building for the 2022 World Cup are forced into long hours on the side of roads or inside factories in the sweltering heat. Their living situations are just as trying: "We have been here for 2 months. And for 2 months we haven't been given beds." These workers entered into pseudo slavery due the loans they took to travel that they can't afford to pay back, as the hope of the income they were promised was a lie. They can't return home, and if they’re sick "the company cut their salary for going to the hospital". Take an inside look at the conditions of these impoverished and undervalued workers, who risk overworking to the point of death for fear of unemployment.

The squeezed American middle class has been at breaking point for some time. Now with politicians reluctant to raise the minimum wage and food stamps being cut, the social consequences could be devastating.
Mike Doyle's plummet into the ranks of America's working poor is dramatic. He was a Wall Street trader - then the GFC clobbered his hedge fund and now he's mixing drinks at night for $2.13 an hour. Every day he takes the dawn ferry to Manhattan to try - so far in vain - to resuscitate his financial career. "I think it's a real big issue now. Every family I know, all of these people have two jobs", he tells us. As renowned economist Joseph Stiglitz points out, he's far from being alone. "Most Americans have seen their incomes stagnate or fall since 2008. Median income of a full-time male worker today is lower than it was 40 years ago." Yet despite the grind, some refuse to give up, like young mother of one Tayzia Treadwell. She works as a security guard in one of the toughest neighbourhoods in America, while raising her child and studying at business college. "I want the good life that everyone dreams when you're in school and you draw the little house and the picket fence and a dog. I just want a happy ending." But without help it is difficult to see even those like Tayzia achieving their dreams. The land of opportunity? Not anymore.

In Rio de Janeiro, a new youth outreach project is lifting impoverished kids out of slums by utilizing some of the best urban rock climbing opportunities in the world. This report meets the kids striving to make a difference.
Rio's slums are notorious for drugs and violence, but unknown to many they also contain some of the "best urban climbing venues" in the world. Now climber Andrew Lenz is training a new generation of young climbers from the city's slums and tackling routes which had been abandoned for over 30 years due to violence in Rochina. For Rio's youth, like 14-year-old Jonas, the challenge of climbing is not just about "dealing with fears but understanding limits."

Cancun, the famous resort and Spring Break capital of the world has become a magnet for mass tourism. But with a threatened environment and marginalised employees, this party comes at a price.
The golden beaches of this Mexican resort attracts around 12 million tourists every year. American students go wild, celebrating the end of exams; here anything goes. Yet behind the scenes workers endure challenging conditions in order to support their families. "They allow themselves to do what they would never do at home", says housekeeper Raquel. With tourists staying within the bounds of their hotels, local commerce has collapsed. The ecological system is also under threat, with 50% of mangroves being replaced by building sites. "In 50 to 60 years, the turquoise colour of the sea that we see today will disappear", warns an environmental expert. For how long will this tropical paradise retain its allure? As Raquel’s grandfather describes "Life is not sweet in Cancun. Life is hard".

It’s a battlefield like no other on earth, where the elements and not enemy fire accounts for 95% of all casualties.
A cease fire line was mapped out in the lower country but the politicians didn’t bother to negotiate a boundary here. It is after all, uninhabitable. But as the power struggle escalates, every bit of territory counts. The high altitude combat is costing each side $730 million dollars a year. At 19,000 feet both sides lose on average two soldiers a day to oxygen deprivation or frostbite. Those that are tough enough to survive often go mad with the ‘Siachen Syndrome’ - a result of the isolation, the constant bombardment, and the grim reality of having to kill the only other human beings they may see in their three month posting. Caught in the crossfire, a shell explodes overhead. Aimed at the small valley town of Athamuqam, these shells are designed to spray hundreds of deadly metal fragments. India’s test of a nuclear artillery shell has the population daily expecting armaggeddon. We meet a truck-full of Kashmiris fleeing the besieged town in search of food. There is nothing low-key about this fighting, it’s incessant and deadly. The K2 postings are a lesson in the lengths India and Pakistan are prepared to go, to secure the next victory in Kashmir.

Throughout the Middle East ISIS are systematically recruiting children as young as 8 to become soldiers and suicide bombers; exacting brutal punishment on those who defy their cause.
"Young children are being taught how to kill, and how to die." The Islamic State is actively recruiting tens of thousands of children to be their next generation of fighters. Through brutal intimidation and intensive indoctrination, children all throughout Iraq and Syria are being transformed into soldiers and even suicide bombers.
"The youngest I saw do an operation was 8 years old", recounts 14 year old Abu Ibrahim, who escaped from an ISIS training camp after they threatened to kill his brother. He describes how children are brainwashed; forced to watch live beheadings and videos of suicide attacks, some even forced to carry out executions and suicide attacks themselves.
"They put my hand on a wooden block...and cut it off with a butcher's knife", describes Omar, also 14. For daring to defy the IS, Omar's hand and foot was publicly amputated in a town square, as a warning to other children. "In the future they will attack and destroy many countries...that is what they have planned."
This shocking report exposes the horrific cruelty of Islamic State as they recruit a new generation of Jihadis.

The PEGIDA movement is spreading across Germany, accelerated by Merkel's decision to open the country's borders. This report travels between PEGIDA, aid volunteers and refugees to explore a widening political division.
In Dresden, the birthplace of PEGIDA, protesters convene at a square once named after Adolf Hitler to rally against the open-door policy of Angela Merkel. "She has no right to mix the German people, to create a new people, influenced by Islam", explains Tatjana Festerling, the party's second in command. "Merkel is the most dangerous woman in Europe." Around 40,000 refugees came to Germany in just 6 weeks, but now German society appears to be increasingly polarised. Extensive support has been provided to refugees in Germany by the army, the Red Cross and volunteers. "It's just humanity. It has nothing to do with being a German", explains one volunteer. Yet even volunteers are becoming wary of the mass influx: "We do not know who is coming, that's frightening". Mikko Stübner-Lankuttis, who grew up in West Berlin, describes the collective German guilt that has been passed down to his generation: "For this reason alone we cannot refuse these refugees with a clear conscience". As German TV presenter Anke Plättner describes, "It is engrained in us Germans: the cry of 'never again'". As past and present collide, Germany's multicultural future hangs in the balance.

The PEGIDA movement is spreading across Germany, accelerated by Merkel's decision to open the country's borders. This report travels between PEGIDA, aid volunteers and refugees to explore a widening political division.

Following Barack Obama's inauguration in 2009, many Americans predicted the end of racial inequality in the United States. But as black communities continue to be torn apart by violence, America remains a country divided. Taking cues from their forefathers in the 1950s, a new generation of civil rights activists has emerged from the bloodshed, determined to have their voices heard in the fight for racial equality.
"Witnesses say he was beaten from this side of the street all the way to that side. He was screaming for help, but none of those animals stopped", explains Tawanda Jones tearfully. Her brother Tyrone was killed by police, in what she says was a "brutal murder". Tawanda believes her brother fell victim to a police force that routinely discriminates against black lives: "There's no justice, it's just us. We need to stick together and dismantle this corrupt system"
The movement however is not just about changing policing: it is pursuing real reform in gang-tormented neighbourhoods, as often the most dangerous violence comes from within these communities. For example in the South Side of Chicago, brutal gang violence is a part of daily life: it is easier for many young black men to get a gun than a job, and on average someone is shot every three hours. Campaigners are fighting to provide an alternative to the epidemic of gang warfare, determined to stop the violence from within. "They want to close down schools, they don't want kids to read, don't want them to learn...but that's what's going to curb the violence", explains one woman.
"I think what we're seeing is the birth of a mass movement."

Sunday’s Spanish general election saw anti-austerity party Podemos win 69 parliamentary seats, and 21% of the vote. This report followed Podemos and their leader Pablo Iglesias during their pre-election campaign, up to the surprising results.
“We are experiencing in the city councils in Spain, in the very small margins of the state, of the administration, it is possible to change many things” said Pablo Iglesias, the party’s secretary-general in an interview last week. During the last week of their campaign before the general election strong support is evident, with 13,000 people attending a Valencian rally. Does this signal the collapse of the two party system in Spain? As Ada Colau, Major of Barcelona explains “The nation-of-nations approach that Podemos has articulated is an authentic revolution in this country.”

As President Zuma comes under attack, this powerful 2013 film exposes a South African reality where violence is commonplace, unemployment is out of control and the ruling ANC government is accused of rampant corruption.
The gap between rich and poor across South Africa is wider than ever, with 18 million South Africans surviving on less than $2 a day. More than half of the 'born free' generation are unemployed. "We are a lost youth", 20-year-old Morongoa explains. Meanwhile, Jacob Zuma's retirement complex boasts 31 buildings, a double helipad, underground bunkers and a gym, costing nearly $30 million in state funds.

One is from a remote Inuit community in the Arctic Tundra, the other from the bustling but poverty-stricken capital of Guinea, West Africa. But Guillaume Saladin and Yamoussa Bangoura share a dream: take circus to the youth in their communities. Filmed between two locations at the opposite ends of the world, Circus without Borders introduces two figures committed to change, with the talent to achieve it.
In places still reeling from their colonial pasts and struggling to reconcile their history with the modern world, both men are using circus to imbue the youth with pride in their culture. Inuit throat singing and Guinean tribal dance find their way into the performances, which, in Guillaume's words, "take the best of the modern world and the best of the traditional world and make something coherent." The breathtaking results have to be seen to be believed.

Ulay is conceptual artist Frank Uwe Laysiepen, whose photography pushed the boundaries of the medium, and whose love affair with Marina Ambramovic produced some of the world's best-known examples of performance art. Diagnosed with cancer shortly after agreeing to film the documentary, Ulay's illness informs Project Cancer, which is part-retrospective, part-visual document of the year he believed could be the last of his extraordinary life.
"The body is the medium par excellence"", Ulay is fond of saying. Now that his has been invaded by illness, which threatens to consume it, it is time for reflection, for farewells, and to remember a life dedicated to art. Project Cancer does this with humour and profundity.

In Southern China a village of artists are creating copycat paintings from the worlds greatest artists. Van Gogh never sold a copy of his creation ‘Sunflowers’, so how come these guys are?
Taking the younger inexperienced painters under his wing, the self-taught ‘Master’ teaches them with techniques and ideas. One of his young protégées believes that painting has changed his life for the better. ‘Painting was my hobby but there was no teacher in my village, I worked on shop windows and signboards until I came here.’ He resigned from his job in a Wal-Mart supermarket to make a go of it as a street painter. ‘I saw you could make money painting, I have nothing else to do in my free time.’ The artists copy from books and photographs to produce some stunningly accurate and realistic art replicas. A light-hearted film which gives us a backstage pass to the world of ‘copy-culture’ in China.

Seventy-six percent of women in The Gambia undergo Female Genital Mutilation as children. Halimatou Ceesay, who was cut when she was nine, is making it her mission to end this brutal tradition in a generation.
"I was crying so much... I can still hear my crying today", Halimatou says as she describes her cutting. FGM is culturally ingrained in The Gambia, and the physical and mental damage inflicted on young girls is often ignored. "I am in tears when I see these girls, it is not fair", explains a nurse. In this report, Halimatou travels across the country, interviewing friends, health experts, a religious scholar and even her own cutter; determined to bring about change.

For the eight million people living under ISIS, daily life is increasingly dominated by a terrifying bureaucracy. More than oil, it is extortion, taxes and seizure of property driving ISIS's growing economy.
Refugees fleeing from the so-called Islamic caliphate describe how the barbarism of ISIS is becoming more systematic. One woman in a German refugee centre describes the IS extortion first-hand: "You have to pay taxes for everything - for your motorcycle, a marriage or birth certificate, water, electricity. No matter what". Those who do not comply with these rules are simply killed. Newspaper reporter Christopher Reuter is an expert in the structure of ISIS in Syria and Iraq. In contrast to the image of ISIS as an uncivilised 'death cult', Reuter argues that they have established a modern civil service capable of sustaining their territorial ambitions. This view is shared by terrorism expert Loretta Napoleoni, who believes ISIS is more professionally organised than the West realises. "The biggest mistake that the West is making today is that IS is acting as a state." Leaked budget papers from Syria reveal the extent to which ISIS is financed through the systematic exploitation of civilians: 44.7 percent compared to only 27.7 percent from oil sales. If true, this "loot economy" will significantly limit the effectiveness of air strikes in halting their expansion. Is it time we reassessed our understanding of ISIS?

Most men squirm at the mention of women's periods. And then there's Muruganantham, an illiterate school dropout. After discovering his wife's rudimentary means of managing her periods, he rolled up his sleeves and went on a remarkable quest to provide low cost sanitary towels to rural Indian women. At first he was labelled a pervert and shunned, but today he is hailed as a visionary around the world. An inspiring and extraordinary story of the unlikeliest of heroes.

South Korea may now have entered ranks of the world's top economic powers, but it is paying a hefty price; an epidemic of suicides is afflicting its dejected senior citizens and is spreading to the youth.
"Before, families lived together in one home", says Choi Seong-Wo, who runs a soup kitchen for Seoul's elderly. Many of his regulars have been abandoned by their children and are now forced to live on paltry state benefits in pensioner ghettos. "Confucianism is in the past, it's ancient history", he adds. Capitalism has replaced it, and traditional family values have been left by the wayside, driving the old to desperate measures. "Suicide is a full-blown epidemic", says Captain Seo Hyung-Gun, whose rescue team patrols the river night and day. In the countryside, the problem is worse, though it remains taboo. "You don't talk about it; people are in denial", says Sho Jin, who lost his best friend. Like many in poor rural regions abandoned by the young, he committed suicide by drinking pesticides. In Gwando province last year, 500 took their lives in this way. Faced with figures like these, the government responded by spending 2.5 million on suicide prevention in 2014. But it may need to re-think it's approach to a problem that is as much social and psychological as it is material.

Every year UK credit cards are defrauded of £400 million. The banking industry is reluctant to invest the sums required to stop it. And the police are left with a huge problem - faceless untraceable criminals. Few are convicted and the internet has made the criminal's job easier than ever. This film illustrates the shocking simplicity of the process.

A quirky pair of adventurers, Frank and Todd, take a 650 km canoe journey through the remote, beautiful, and harsh landscape of Northern Canada. Sometimes carrying the canoe and sometimes riding it, with good humour and a dash of performance art, they endure a myriad of whitewater rapids, mountain portages and overwhelming clouds of mosquitoes to carve out a new route over the vast tundra of the Labrador Plateau. An unusual and special film.

It’s noon and -37C in Chukotka. A blistering wind slices across the tundra. In the magnificent landscape of Russia's Arctic Circle on the Bering Strait, 72-year-old patriarch Vukvukai leads his indigenous family in caring for their herd of 14,000 reindeer. Living in isolation, the family depends on reindeer for everything. In the harshest of arctic conditions the narrative, characters and landscapes are so vivid it feels almost like a work of cinematic fiction.

In the last year over 400 Belgian Muslims have travelled to Syria to fight for ISIS. This film investigates why so many young Belgians are becoming radicalised, and how leaders of the Muslim community are attempting to combat it.
"Everyone in Vilvoorde knows someone who's left", explains Moad, a young Muslim from the region. "An entire generation is missing." What is driving these young men to turn their backs on their families to go to war? "It's a shared responsibility. There is nowhere else for young Muslims to go", says Moad. "Instead of Kalashnikovs we bring food parcels. That is our Jihad", explains Imad. He, like many other Muslims in Vilevoord, is trying to fight this growing radicalisation by engaging with the local Muslim youth through charity, and offering them guidance and support to try and stop them from turning to ISIS. Local Imam Sulyaman explains, "We need to work towards a positive future... there are still many young people who do believe in a future here". Community members like Imad and Sulyaman are trying to fight extremism by educating young disenfranchised Muslims about the true meaning of Islam, and that Muslims have a valuable place in European society. "ISIS is an ideology. You cannot bombard an ideology... an ideology has to be fought intellectually". This film offers a fascinating and timely insight into a growing problem throughout Europe, and a valuable perspective on the Muslim communities fighting extremism.

Waco: The Rules of Engagement explores the shocking revelations behind the tragic series of events outside Waco, Texas that killed four federal agents and 76 members of the Branch Davidian religious sect.
Nominated for an Academy Award, Waco: The Rules of Engagement brings forth devastating evidence of federal law enforcement gone tragically wrong. It suggests The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives provoked war with a group whose apocalyptic religious beliefs and rumoured manufacturing of illegal weapons made them easy targets, resulting in the abuse of its members.
This film urges for a reassessment of the tragedy at Waco, where the intolerance and the aggression of the ATF may have played a greater role than is currently acknowledged.

‘Talibé’ provides a detailed insight in the life of so called talibés – pupils of Senegalese Quranic schools. Quranic schools are widespread in Senegal.
People send their children to these schools because they consider it important that their children grow up with the Islamic values carried out by the teachers, locally known as marabouts. But since the Senegalese government doesn’t subsidize the Quranic schools, lots of marabouts are confronted with a severe lack of resources to feed and support their pupils. As such, it’s common practice for marabouts to send their pupils out on the streets to beg for food and money. Some of them consider it a genuine way to support and take care of the talibés, others consider it more of as a business. Cases of mistreat, violence and abuse are widespread. In a recent report, Human Rights Watch calls the practices a present day variant of slavery and human trafficking. ‘Talibé’ follows several days in the life of talibés in both Dakar and Saint-Louis, talking to pupils, marabouts and social workers who go out at night to look for talibés that have fled their Quranic school.

"It was really hard trying to be like all the other kids but I just I knew I was different." Claire D is a vivacious 25-year-old. To the outside world she is just an average young woman: "She presents so well and convinces people she's fine and she can manage. But in reality there's a lot of areas where she really can't do it by herself without support."
Seth is 31 and has spent a lifetime struggling to cope: "I look fine, I act fine but nobody actually knows what goes on in my head. Things that my brain does to me without me even wanting to. Makes life very difficult."
They both have brain damage, caused by their mothers drinking alcohol in pregnancy. These people face a devastating range of problems, from behavioural issues to learning difficulties, collectively known as Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
In Australia's first dedicated clinic, specialists are diagnosing and tackling the disorder, and warn that some children diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are actually suffering the effects of foetal alcohol exposure. The doctors also caution that Australia's heavy drinking culture overshadows the concerns we should have about women drinking alcohol in pregnancy.

A dead fisherman, a desperate poacher and a broken romance are all bound by a single theme: the curse of the abalone. It’s an endangered marine snail, prized as an aphrodisiac in China. Its illegal harvesting is destroying the fishing communities of South Africa. A gripping and nuanced doc following three families torn between tradition and the promise of new-found wealth, and caught in a battle with a corrupt and brutal police force.

How can nature’s own breast milk be questioned? But all too often it is. How would the business of infant formula be so big otherwise? Through an intimate and artistic lens, MILK brings a universal perspective to the commercialisation and politics surrounding infant feeding. From the judgment placed on women who bottle feed their babies, to the stigma of breastfeeding in public. A thought-provoking examination of the way we feed our babies around the world.

Kashgar is a cultural icon. Parts of the city have stood for 2000 years and within its labyrinth, Uighur traditions are unchanged. 'We live as we did in the old times' says Tursun, a 6 generation pot thrower. But times are changing. Beijing's deputy mayor has announced that destruction of the old town is the only way to prepare for an earthquake threat. 'I spent my whole childhood in this place. If they destroy it, we can't continue our business' cries one of Kashgar's many blacksmiths. Many Uighur's are convinced that the authorities 'never tell the truth'. Yet some are happy to be rehoused in government buildings, admitting that their homes are dangerous. Kashgar is of great strategic value for China - if small separatist groups here link with Taliban insurgents across the border, there could be a full-scale armed conflict in Western China. 'If a handful of religious extremists, or international terrorists appear, we will crack down on them immediately' says Beijing's deputy mayor. His plan could rebuild a sour relationship. Or give the Uighurs a new reason to throw off Chinese occupation of their homeland.

Yakuza, 2010 - The Yakuza, the Japanese equivalent of the mafia are a ruthless organisation with 80,000 members, and no one is off limits for the violent mob.
Child pornography, along with prostitution and drugs, allows the Yakuza - Japans 80 000 strong mafia - to rake in 50 billion dollars a year. We pry open a window on this deadly criminal network.
In Tokyo bay, police divers haul heavily tattooed body parts out of the water - "heads, lower body parts and two left ankles have been found". This is what happens to those who cross the Yakuza. Yet it's not illegal to be a member and police have no powers to wiretap, plea bargain or offer witness protection. "In the old days they protected the weak from the strong. Today Yakuza live as pimps. They use cocaine, threaten people, and extort money", says Gijin Kobayashi. After a lifetime with the Yakuza, years of cocaine-fuelled violence and a lengthy stretch in jail, Gijin has sought absolution as a Buddhist monk. He was lucky to escape the Yakuza's notorious vengeance. Celebrities, journalists and politicians have all felt the Yakuza's wrath. And they go to any lengths to maintain their power in Japan's society. "There are no rules when it comes to the Yakuza doing business", says former Yakuza gangster and convicted killer, Shinji Ishihara, "they'll do anything to make money". Japan's organised crime chief has acknowledged the Yakuza's stake in child pornography. Yet this sordid mob is still going strong, tainting Japan's national image.

Crackdown: The report on Uigher protests that broke relations between China and Australia
Xinjiang province has long been the site of ethnic tensions between the Uighur population and Chinese rule. Amid fears that fanatical Uighurs are aligning with foreign extremists, the state crackdown is fiercer than ever.
"A normal person wouldn't raise a butcher's knife to the elderly and children. Can we still call them human beings?", asks policeman Ainiding Memtimin. In May he was on the scene when a group of extremists threw explosives into a busy Urumqi marketplace, killing 39 people. A Uighur himself, like most locals he is baffled by such drastic violent acts. Yet the tensions that have simmered in this region are sitting on a knife edge. "Injustice is everywhere here, but we can't talk about it", says one Uighur farmer in a snatched interview. On Xinjiang's highways, cars are now being stopped for full airport-style security checks. The government keeps a close eye on religious institutions and veils for women and beards for men are actively discouraged. Teaching in the Uighur language is disappearing in schools and it's almost non-existent at universities. And it isn't just the Uighurs feeling the crackdown; enormous numbers of Han Chinese have been pressed into the province to water down the Uighurs' presence and influence. In some towns, payments are being offered for inter-marriage. But is China's central government using a sledgehammer to crack a nut? This report doggedly pushes past the press restrictions and government minders to tackle this difficult question.
