Ten-year-old Holly Jones disappears after walking her friend home in her Toronto neighbourhood.
Within hours of her disappearance, police launch a massive search and issue an "Amber Alert," a quick-response strategy used when a child's kidnapping is suspected.

Holly's parents Maria Jones and George Stonehouse appeal to the public for her safe return.
Body parts are found in two bags off the shores of Toronto Island.
Hours later, police say "the search for Holly Jones is now a search for her killer," after they confirm the remains found in the bag are Holly's.

Sorauren Avenue Park
Sorauren Avenue Park is a park in the Roncesvalles neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A reclaimed brown field site, it was created after the local community objected to City of Toronto plans to convert a former bus garage into a facility for storing City vehicles. The park opened in 1995 and now hosts several sporting fields, a farmer's market and a fieldhouse for community gatherings.
History
The location was first cleared in the 1800s for a farm. After the building of bordering rail lines, the site became a desirable location for industrial uses. Among these was a linseed oil factory as well as a factory for Dominion Bridge Company property at 289 Sorauren Avenue. The Toronto Transit Commission took over the factory and converted it into a bus garage on the site in the 1947, and used it until the 1960s, after which it became a repair and maintenance facility. The TTC stopped using the facility and it was contracted out for soundstage use for television series (one specific example being Captain Power). In the 1980s the City was planning to use the site to store trucks and other vehicles of its public works division. The community, notably local schools, rallied to cancel the plan and convert the site to open space, of which there was a lack in the area. City Council endorsed the plan to convert the bus garage site, clean it of toxins and build a park. The park construction did not remove the concrete floor of the bus garage; instead it was filled over with soil. The park cost $700,000 and was officially opened on September 17, 1995 by mayor Barbara Hall and councillor Chris Korwin-Kuczynski.

Holly
Ilex /ˈaɪlɛks/, or holly, is a genus of 400 to 600 species of flowering plants in the family Aquifoliaceae, and the only living genus in that family. The species are evergreen and deciduous trees, shrubs, and climbers from tropics to temperate zones worldwide.
Description
The genus Ilex is widespread throughout the temperate and subtropical regions of the world. It includes species of trees, shrubs, and climbers, with evergreen or deciduous foliage and inconspicuous flowers. Its range was more extended in the Tertiary period and many species are adapted to laurel forest habitat. It occurs from sea level to more than 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) with high mountain species. It is a genus of small, evergreen trees with smooth, glabrous, or pubescent branchlets. The plants are generally slow-growing with some species growing to 25 m (82 ft) tall. The type species is the European holly Ilex aquifolium described by Linnaeus.
Plants in this genus have simple, alternate glossy leaves, typically with a spiny toothed, or serrated leaf margin. The inconspicuous flower is greenish white, with four petals. They are generally dioecious, with male and female flowers on different plants.

Ontario says it will give Toronto police an extra $700,000 to monitor sex offenders. Security Minister Bob Runciman says Holly's murder was the catalyst for the additional resources.

Police arrest Michael Briere, 35, a software developer at a west-end address near Holly's home. He's charged with first-degree murder. He's held without bail and placed in protective custody.

Briere waves his right to a preliminary hearing, sparking rumours that he would plead guilty to Holly Jones' murder.

Hundreds of people turn out for a candlelight vigil to mark the first anniversary of Holly Jones' death.

Briere pleads guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Holly Jones, 13 months after she was killed and almost a year to the day after his arrest. It's the first time since his arrest that he appears in court in person. Previous court appearances were via video-conferencing. Briere gets an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. Briere told the court he was consumed by desire after viewing child pornography. He then abducted and killed Holly.

Police appeal to the public for help in identifying two men who were on board ferries bound for Toronto Island, where some of Holly's remains were found. One of the men comes forward and is cleared.
Toronto police Chief Julian Fantino visits Holly's parents at their home, offering his sympathy, and reiterating a pledge to catch the girl's killer.
Toronto police Staff Insp. Gary Ellis says detectives are closing in on the killer. "This killer, their plan has gone terribly awry," Ellis says. "They thought they had committed the perfect crime, they thought they had done a textbook case and what they've done is provide us with a substantial amount of evidence."

Toronto police Chief Julian Fantino visits Holly's parents at their home, offering his sympathy, and reiterating a pledge to catch the girl's killer.
Toronto police Staff Insp. Gary Ellis says detectives are closing in on the killer. "This killer, their plan has gone terribly awry," Ellis says. "They thought they had committed the perfect crime, they thought they had done a textbook case and what they've done is provide us with a substantial amount of evidence."

How do non-citizens experience winter sport in Ottawa? Is there a connection between urban citizenship and recreation opportunities in the city? How are migrant identities altered or constructed given the sporting culture and winter climate?
This film will explore these questions through the experiences of two winter athletes from Ottawa. A skier and a speed skater, both with ethnic backgrounds and roots outside of Canada, were interviewed about their lives as athletes, as urban citizens and as migrants in Ottawa.
This research will explore the involvement of new Canadian citizens as well as immigrants to Ottawa, in sporting culture. Ottawa, as the capital city, has a significant role to play in maintaining a culture of sport that characterizes Canada.
How has Ottawa’s winter climate provided you with an opportunity for sport involvement?
Conversely, how has the winter climate here created a boundary for you as an immigrant?
What has been your experience as a winter sport athlete in Ottawa?

Holly Holm will be facing Champion Ronda Rousey on November 14, 2015: she discusses her preparation for the fight at Jackson/Winklejohn, why she’s confident that her skills will allow her to be more successful than her predecessors and what she hopes to achieve after winning the title.
