On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the ANSWER Coalition, a progressive antiwar group, sponsored a Mass March and Die-In in Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to raise the consciousness of enough people in this country to stop the illegal and immoral Iraq War and to prevent the Bush-Cheney Gang from launching a war against Iran. The rally took place in Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, where a number of prominent speakers were heard. One of the speakers was Gloria La Riva. She is with the "National Committee to Free the Cuban Five." Ms. La Riva said: "George W. Bush is a terrorist for his [Iraq] war...He is also a terrorist for the U.S. government policy which he has intensified against the country of Cuba." Lincoln Chafee
Lincoln Davenport Chafee (/ˈtʃeɪfiː/; born March 26, 1953) is an American politician from Rhode Island who has served as the Mayor of Warwick (1993–1999), a U.S. Senator (1999–2007) and as the 74th Governor of Rhode Island (2011–2015)
Born in Providence, Chafee is the son of Republican politician John Chafee, who served as the 66th Governor of Rhode Island (1963–1969), the United States Secretary of the Navy (1969–1972) and a U.S. Senator (1976–1999). Lincoln Chafee was educated at Providence Country Day School and Phillips Academy, before graduating with a degree in Classics from Brown University. He then moved to Bozeman, Montana, studying to become a farrier at Montana State University, then working at harness racetracks in the United States and Canada.
Chafee returned to Rhode Island and entered politics as a Republican in 1985 as a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention. A year later, he was elected to the Warwick City Council, where he served until his election as Warwick's mayor in 1992. When his father died in 1999, Governor Lincoln Almond appointed the younger Chafee to his father's seat in the U.S. Senate. He won the 2000 election to a full term, defeating Democrat Robert Weygand by 57% to 41%.
A liberal Republican, Chafee was frequently ranked as the least conservative Senate Republican, and to the left of some conservative Democrats. He opposed eliminating the estate tax, voted to increase the top federal income tax rate, voted against allowing drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, supported an increased minimum wage and was the only Republican Senator to vote against authorizing the use of force in Iraq. Chafee is pro-choice, supports same-sex marriage, affirmative action, gun control and federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and opposes the death penalty and a Flag Desecration Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Chafee did not vote for President George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election, instead casting a write-in vote for Bush's father George H. W. Bush. Chafee ran for re-election to the Senate in 2006 and was challenged from the right in the Republican primary by Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey. Chafee was supported by the Republican establishment, including President Bush's wife Laura, as the most electable candidate in the heavily blue state and was opposed by several conservative organizations. Chafee defeated Laffey by 54% to 46% but was defeated in the general election by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, the former Attorney General of Rhode Island, by 54% to 46%.
Chafee left office in January 2007 and then left the Republican Party to become an Independent in September of that year. He was a supporter of Democrat Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies. Chafee ran for Governor of Rhode Island in the 2010 election and defeated Republican John Robitaille, Democrat Frank T. Caprio and Moderate Party nominee Ken Block with 36% of the vote, becoming the first Independent to serve as Governor of Rhode Island since John Collins in 1790.[2] Chafee was a co-chair of Obama's 2012 re-election campaign and in May 2013, he announced he was switching his registration to the Democratic Party.
In September 2013, Chafee announced that he would not run for re-election in 2014. On April 9, 2015, Chafee announced that he was exploring a run for U.S. President as a Democrat in the 2016 election.[5] Chafee formally announced the launch of his campaign on June 3, 2015.
Glora La Riva
Gloria Estela La Riva (born August 13, 1954, in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an American politician associated most recently with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and in California with the Peace and Freedom Party, and previously with the Workers World Party. She was the PSL's 2008 presidential candidate,[1] and was also vying for the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party in California, but lost the bid to Ralph Nader.[2] La Riva launched her presidential campaign in January 2008, with Eugene Puryear running for vice president.

Three years later, Gerardo Hernández of the Cuban Five, who had nothing to do with the shoot down, was falsely charged and wrongly convicted of "murder conspiracy" for the shoot down. As a result he is serving a double life sentence in Victorville Prison in California. Twice before the 1996 shootdown, Bill Richardson met with Cuban President Fidel Castro and assured him that President Bill Clinton promised the planes would be prohibited from flying. But Clinton did not stop the illegal flights.

La Riva launched her presidential campaign in January 2008, with Eugene Puryear running for vice president.
La Riva was first a third-party candidate for President of the United States in the United States presidential election, 1992, representing the Workers World Party, although this was an unofficial run as basically a placeholder on a few state ballots. She had also been the Workers World vice-presidential candidate in the elections of 1984, 1988, 1996, and 2000. She joined the Party for Socialism and Liberation in its split from the Workers World Party in 2004.
La Riva was also the Peace and Freedom Party candidate for Governor of California in 1994, receiving 72,774 votes (0.9%). She ran again in the 1998 gubernatorial election, capturing 59,218 votes (0.71%).

William Blaine "Bill" Richardson III (born November 15, 1947) is an American politician, who served as the 30th Governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011. Before being elected governor, Richardson served in the Clinton administration as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and Energy Secretary. Richardson has also served as a U.S. Congressman, chairman of the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and chairman of the Democratic Governors Association. On December 3, 2008, then-President-elect Barack Obama designated Richardson for appointment to the cabinet-level position of Commerce Secretary. On January 4, 2009, Richardson announced his decision to withdraw his nomination because of an investigation into possibly improper business dealings in New Mexico. In August 2009, federal prosecutors dropped the pending investigation against the governor, and there was speculation in the media regarding Richardson's career, as his second and final term as New Mexico governor concluded.

The Cuban Five, also known as the Miami Five (Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino, Fernando González, and René González) are five Cuban intelligence officers convicted in Miami of conspiracy to commit espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, and other illegal activities in the United States. The Five were in the United States to observe and infiltrate the U.S. Southern Command and the Cuban-American groups Alpha 66, the F4 Commandos, the Cuban American National Foundation, and Brothers to the Rescue.
At their trial, evidence was presented that the Five infiltrated the Miami-based Cuban exile group Brothers to the Rescue, obtained employment at the Key West Naval Air Station in order to send the Cuban government reports about the base, and had attempted to penetrate the Miami facility of U.S. Southern Command. On February 24, 1996, two Brothers to the Rescue aircraft were shot down by Cuban military jets in international airspace while flying away from Cuban airspace, killing the four U.S. citizens aboard. One of the Five, Gerardo Hernández, was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder for supplying information to the Cuban government which according to the prosecution led to the shootdown. The Court of Appeals has, however, reversed the conviction on the conspiracy to commit murder, since there is no evidence that Hernández knew the shootdown would occur in international airspace.

On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the ANSWER Coalition, a progressive antiwar group, sponsored a Mass March and Die-In in Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to raise the consciousness of enough people in this country to stop the illegal and immoral Iraq War and to prevent the Bush-Cheney Gang from launching a war against Iran. Lincoln Davenport Chafee (/ˈtʃeɪfiː/; born March 26, 1953) is an American politician from Rhode Island who has served as the Mayor of Warwick (1993–1999), a U.S. Senator (1999–2007) and as the 74th Governor of Rhode Island (2011–2015)
Born in Providence, Chafee is the son of Republican politician John Chafee, who served as the 66th Governor of Rhode Island (1963–1969), the United States Secretary of the Navy (1969–1972) and a U.S. Senator (1976–1999). Lincoln Chafee was educated at Providence Country Day School and Phillips Academy, before graduating with a degree in Classics from Brown University. He then moved to Bozeman, Montana, studying to become a farrier at Montana State University, then working at harness racetracks in the United States and Canada.
Chafee returned to Rhode Island and entered politics as a Republican in 1985 as a delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention. A year later, he was elected to the Warwick City Council, where he served until his election as Warwick's mayor in 1992. When his father died in 1999, Governor Lincoln Almond appointed the younger Chafee to his father's seat in the U.S. Senate. He won the 2000 election to a full term, defeating Democrat Robert Weygand by 57% to 41%.
A liberal Republican, Chafee was frequently ranked as the least conservative Senate Republican, and to the left of some conservative Democrats. He opposed eliminating the estate tax, voted to increase the top federal income tax rate, voted against allowing drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, supported an increased minimum wage and was the only Republican Senator to vote against authorizing the use of force in Iraq. Chafee is pro-choice, supports same-sex marriage, affirmative action, gun control and federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and opposes the death penalty and a Flag Desecration Amendment to the United States Constitution.
Chafee did not vote for President George W. Bush in the 2004 presidential election, instead casting a write-in vote for Bush's father George H. W. Bush. Chafee ran for re-election to the Senate in 2006 and was challenged from the right in the Republican primary by Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey. Chafee was supported by the Republican establishment, including President Bush's wife Laura, as the most electable candidate in the heavily blue state and was opposed by several conservative organizations. Chafee defeated Laffey by 54% to 46% but was defeated in the general election by Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse, the former Attorney General of Rhode Island, by 54% to 46%.
Chafee left office in January 2007 and then left the Republican Party to become an Independent in September of that year. He was a supporter of Democrat Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign and was a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies. Chafee ran for Governor of Rhode Island in the 2010 election and defeated Republican John Robitaille, Democrat Frank T. Caprio and Moderate Party nominee Ken Block with 36% of the vote, becoming the first Independent to serve as Governor of Rhode Island since John Collins in 1790.[2] Chafee was a co-chair of Obama's 2012 re-election campaign and in May 2013, he announced he was switching his registration to the Democratic Party.
In September 2013, Chafee announced that he would not run for re-election in 2014. On April 9, 2015, Chafee announced that he was exploring a run for U.S. President as a Democrat in the 2016 election.[5] Chafee formally announced the launch of his campaign on June 3, 2015.

Gloria Estela La Riva (born August 13, 1954, in Albuquerque, New Mexico) is an American politician associated most recently with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and in California with the Peace and Freedom Party, and previously with the Workers World Party. She was the PSL's 2008 presidential candidate,[1] and was also vying for the nomination of the Peace and Freedom Party in California, but lost the bid to Ralph Nader.[2] La Riva launched her presidential campaign in January 2008, with Eugene Puryear running for vice president.

Tres años después, Gerardo Hernández, uno de los Cinco Cubanos, quien tuvo nada que ver con el derribo, fue encausado con el falso cargo por el gobierno EEUU de "conspiración para cometer asesinato". Como resultado, él tiene sentencia de cadena perpetua en la prisión federal de Victorville.

An analyst says the passage of time will not invalidate the right of the Argentineans to reclaim the Malvinas Islands just as 'Israel's decade-long occupation of Palestinian' will never justify the invasion. The comment comes as Argentina has dismissed Britain's proposal for a referendum that would let residents of the disputed Malvinas Islands decide whether to remain under British colonial rule as "illegal."
"The referendum is illegal because the United Nations declared it to be a nation implanted since 1833 when London invaded and expelled the Argentine inhabitants," Argentinean Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said on Friday, AFP reported. Located about 300 miles off Argentina's coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, Malvinas Islands have been declared part of the British Overseas Territories since Britain established its colonial rule on the territories in 1833. Argentina, however, has repeatedly dismissed the British territorial claim.

Moderated by School of Law Professor Crisarla Houston, the panel included Gloria La Riva, Coordinator of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five; Richard Klugh, trial and appellate attorney for the Five; Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, Executive Director of the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund; and Eugene Puryear, a Howard University undergraduate, author and activist. School of Law alumni director Joe Libertelli and law student Jino Ray made brief welcoming remarks. In attendance were numerous law students, law alumni, faculty and staff, as well as University Board Chair Elaine Crider, among others.
Ms. La Riva started off the panel by providing historical context, describing the modern history of US/Cuban relations from the late 50s onward, beginning with the Batista regime and its overthrow by Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution. She described how many Cubans opposed to the revolution settled in Miami, Florida and detailed a few of the numerous illegal and violent efforts by them, often aided and abetted by the US government, to disrupt and overthrow the Cuban government.
Mr. Klugh described some of the more recent history of violence against Cuba in the 1990s which led to the efforts of The Five to infiltrate and investigate the groups planning this violence and highlighted the irony of their jailing for their efforts to thwart illegal violence. Their prosecution, he maintained, was the only one in American jurisprudential history to proceed with charges of conspiracy to commit espionage against defendants who were never accused of even attempting an act of espionage.
Mr. Glover spoke with eloquence and passion about the injustice of The Five's incarceration and of his own longstanding relationship with the men and his ongoing visits to them in prison. He exhorted those in attendance to join together to fight for justice and argued that the current halt to what appeared to be an impending war against Syria came about in large part as a result of people organizing and speaking out.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, whose DC-based organization has been at the forefront of protecting protesters' civil liberties, described her organization's current successful federal Freedom of Information Act suit which is requiring the Justice Department to disgorge information about how the US paid Miami journalists to create a climate of hatred against Cuba and the defendants at the time of their trial. She also spoke highly of the commitment to justice of the UDC Law students with whom she has worked over the years and urged current students to participate in her organization's ongoing efforts on this case.
Eugene Puryear, author of the newly published book "Shackled and Chained: the History of Mass-Incarceration in the United States" pointed out that the District of Columbia, thanks in part to the efforts of Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, is one of the places in the US where first amendment rights are most respected - and urged those in attendance to exercise those rights!
After initial presentations by the panelists, a spirited question and answer session ensued, which was followed by a reception in the 5th Floor Lobby area.

In attendance were numerous law students, law alumni, faculty and staff, as well as University Board Chair Elaine Crider, among others.
Ms. La Riva started off the panel by providing historical context, describing the modern history of US/Cuban relations from the late 50s onward, beginning with the Batista regime and its overthrow by Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution. She described how many Cubans opposed to the revolution settled in Miami, Florida and detailed a few of the numerous illegal and violent efforts by them, often aided and abetted by the US government, to disrupt and overthrow the Cuban government.
Mr. Klugh described some of the more recent history of violence against Cuba in the 1990s which led to the efforts of The Five to infiltrate and investigate the groups planning this violence and highlighted the irony of their jailing for their efforts to thwart illegal violence. Their prosecution, he maintained, was the only one in American jurisprudential history to proceed with charges of conspiracy to commit espionage against defendants who were never accused of even attempting an act of espionage.
Mr. Glover spoke with eloquence and passion about the injustice of The Five's incarceration and of his own longstanding relationship with the men and his ongoing visits to them in prison. He exhorted those in attendance to join together to fight for justice and argued that the current halt to what appeared to be an impending war against Syria came about in large part as a result of people organizing and speaking out.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, whose DC-based organization has been at the forefront of protecting protesters' civil liberties, described her organization's current successful federal Freedom of Information Act suit which is requiring the Justice Department to disgorge information about how the US paid Miami journalists to create a climate of hatred against Cuba and the defendants at the time of their trial. She also spoke highly of the commitment to justice of the UDC Law students with whom she has worked over the years and urged current students to participate in her organization's ongoing efforts on this case.
Eugene Puryear, author of the newly published book "Shackled and Chained: the History of Mass-Incarceration in the United States" pointed out that the District of Columbia, thanks in part to the efforts of Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, is one of the places in the US where first amendment rights are most respected - and urged those in attendance to exercise those rights!
After initial presentations by the panelists, a spirited question and answer session ensued, which was followed by a reception in the 5th Floor Lobby area.

Il potere e la gloria è il titolo di un dramma televisivo andato in onda sul Programma Nazionale della RAI il 2/4/1965. Il soggetto, con l'adattamento teatrale di Denis Cannan e Pierre Bost nella versione italiana di Luigi Squarzina e la regia di Mario Ferrero, venne tratto dal celebre romanzo di Graham Greene (Berkhampsted, 2 ottobre 1904 – Corsier-sur-Vevey, 3 aprile 1991) che è stato uno scrittore, drammaturgo, sceneggiatore, autore di libri di viaggi, agente segreto e critico letterario inglese. Greene rifiutava di essere definito un romanziere cattolico anziché un romanziere che era anche cattolico, ma i temi religiosi, in particolare cattolici, sono alla radice di molti suoi scritti. Il potere e la gloria (The Power and the Glory o nell'edizione statunitense The Labyrinthine Ways, 1940) scritto a seguito del suo viaggio in Messico, è un libro che ha destato scandalo e che è stato causa di un vivace dibattito all'interno della Chiesa Cattolica. Il libro, pur fatto oggetto di indagine da parte del Sant'Uffizio, non fu mai messo all'Indice, anche grazie all'intervento dell'allora cardinal Montini (futuro papa Paolo VI), che manifestò apertamente la sua stima nei confronti dell'Autore. La vicenda nel 1947 aveva ispirato il film diretto da John Ford La croce di fuoco (The Fugitive), con Dolores Del Rio, Henry Fonda nella parte del sacerdote e Pedro Armendariz in quella del persecutore. Memorabili i personaggi che il sacerdote incontra nel corso della sua fuga, come padre José, ex-prete che gli fa da contro-bilancia e che è stato mantenuto in vita solo perché ha deciso di diventare laico e di sposarsi, ma che vivrà per sempre nel senso di colpa, circondato da beffe e in stato di codardo servilismo. Oppure il tenente che poi lo troverà e lo farà fucilare, che in realtà scopriamo avere un certo buonismo ingenuo. Egli è estremamente convinto che il male del paese sia stata la religione e scoprendo i suoi pensieri troviamo un amore immenso ed universale verso il suo popolo, che crede di star salvando dalla povertà e dall'ignoranza. Aroldo Tieri, che circa dieci anni prima interpretando lo stesso ruolo era già stato protagonista in un'edizione andata in onda il 24/8/1955, trasmessa in diretta dalla piazza del Duomo di San Miniato, giganteggia sorretto da Renzo Palmer e Luigi Vannucchi.

Trama:
Nel 1940, in un Messico insanguinato dalla rivoluzione, che perseguita, fucila o costringe al matrimonio i ministri di Dio, l'ultimo prete è braccato in una spietata caccia all'uomo. Su di lui pende una taglia. Il sacerdote è un uomo corrotto e vigliacco, un prete ubriacone, che in un momento di abbandono all'alcol ha avuto un rapporto sessuale con una donna da cui è poi nata una figlia, un traditore della sua stessa fede, ma dal popolo viene visto come un santo, contrapposto al poliziotto che lo perseguita, incarnazione di uno stato sopraffattore. Vorrebbe mettersi in salvo, allontanarsi per sempre da quell'angolo di mondo che sembra dimenticato da Dio e che vuole dimenticare Dio. Ma alla fine il prete vigliacco ritroverà il coraggio e vivendo da prete subirà il martirio della fede.
