Brandon Matthew Lloyd (born July 5, 1981) is an American football wide receiver for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He played college football at Illinois. Lloyd has also played for the Washington Redskins, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos, and St. Louis Rams.

Early years[link]

Lloyd attended Blue Springs High School in Blue Springs, Missouri and was a letterman in football, basketball, and track. In track he still holds a school record 7'2 high jump. In football, he was a three-time All-Suburban Big Eight honoree, and as a senior, he was also awarded All-Region by the Mo-Kan Magazine and was named an All-State honoree by the St.Louis Post-Dispatch.

College career[link]

Lloyd attended the University of Illinois beginning in 1999. After a promising freshman season, Lloyd missed all of the 2000 season with a broken femur. He returned healthy and had outstanding seasons in both 2001 and 2002. He was a consensus First-Team All-Big Ten performer after his sophomore season in 2001, helping lead the Fighting Illini to a 10-2 record and a BCS berth in the Sugar Bowl. After his junior season in 2002, Lloyd declared his eligibility for the NFL Draft. He finished his college career having the second-most receiving yards (2,583) and touchdown catches (21) in Illinois history, and ranking third in all-time receptions (160).

Professional career[link]

San Francisco 49ers[link]

Lloyd was drafted in the fourth round of the 2003 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. In his first game he blocked a punt against the Chicago Bears on September 7, 2003. On November 2, 2003, he caught his first touchdown pass against the St. Louis Rams. He finished the season with 14 receptions for 212 yards and two touchdowns. In 2004, Lloyd started and appeared in 13 games and finished the season with 43 catches for 565 yards and six touchdowns. During the 2005 season Lloyd started 16 games and posted NFL career-highs and team-highs in receptions (48) and receiving yards (733) and had five touchdown catches. In Week 3 vs. the Dallas Cowboys, he recorded four catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including a 89-yard touchdown catch.

Washington Redskins[link]

On Saturday March 11, 2006, the San Francisco 49ers traded Lloyd to Washington Redskins in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft and a fourth-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. His first season is widely considered a failure, as he caught 23 passes for no touchdowns. According to Howard Bryant of the Washington Post, citing NFL.com, "Lloyd suffered through the worst season for a starting receiver in the Super Bowl era... No starting No. 2 wide receiver in the NFL started more games (12) while producing less (23 catches, 365 yards)."

Lloyd never made it out of Joe Gibbs doghouse, due to a questionable attitude and alleged poor work ethic. On Sunday, November 4, 2007, Lloyd was listed among Redskins inactives as the team traveled to play against the New York Jets. Citing the reason behind the move, Gibbs said that Lloyd had been told to remain behind in Washington as disciplinary action for missing important team meetings. Lloyd would spend the latter part of the 2007 season on injured reserve after having snapped his collar bone while making a diving touchdown catch during team practice.

On February 26, 2008, the Redskins released Lloyd, who caught only two passes for 14 yards for the 2007 season.

Chicago Bears[link]

On March 7, 2008, Lloyd signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears after the release of Muhsin Muhammad and the loss of Bernard Berrian to free agency. The move reunited him with Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner, who was Lloyd's head coach at Illinois. Lloyd had a successful start to his career in Chicago, establishing himself as a favorite target of quarterback Kyle Orton, with 15 catches in his first four games. An injury forced him to miss several weeks, and he fell out of favor with the coaching staff as a result.^[1] He returned to the field in week 11, though did not approach his early-season productivity until the Bears' final game of the season, where he caught four passes from Orton for 34.^[2]

Denver Broncos[link]

Lloyd's contract with the Chicago Bears expired after the end of the 2008 season. In early April, Bears quarterback Kyle Orton was traded to the Denver Broncos in a deal involving Jay Cutler. As the offseason progressed, the Bears did not make any efforts to resign Lloyd. Being one of Kyle Orton's favorite targets during the 2008 campaign, Brandon Lloyd was once again reunited with Orton when he signed with the Denver Broncos on June 15, 2009. Lloyd re-signed with the Broncos on March 15, 2010.^[3]

During the Broncos' 24-20 loss to the Jets on 17 October, Lloyd was subjected to a helmet-to-helmet tackle/hit by New York safety Jim Leonhard, resulting in a 15-yard penalty. This hit, along with several other helmet-to-helmet hits during NFL games that weekend, led the league to announce such future 'devastating hits' or 'head shots' will be met with possible suspensions even for first-time offenders, a significant change in league policy, especially during an on-going season.^[4]

He led the NFL in receiving yards with 1,448 yards for the 2010 season.^[5] and was named 2nd Team All-Pro and was invited to the 2011 Pro Bowl.

St. Louis Rams[link]

On October 17, 2011, Lloyd was traded to the St. Louis Rams, where he caught 51 passes. The Rams gave up a conditional sixth-round pick that was upgraded to a fifth-round pick because Lloyd had over 30 receptions.

New England Patriots[link]

On March 17, 2012, Lloyd signed a three-year deal with the New England Patriots for $12 million with incentives to escalate it to $15.5 million.^[6]

In addition to his football career, Lloyd has recorded music and attempted to launch a career as a rapper. In 2008 his single "She All Mine" made the Billboard R&B chart, and his song "Heavy" was featured on the Spike TV show Blue Mountain State.^[7] Lloyd has received criticism for trying to balance careers in football and rap, but he says that making music is important to expressing who he really is. Quoted in a 2011 article, Lloyd said, "I have the guts to stand out and do something I'm passionate about, go against the grain and go against the conventional wisdom that the athlete-rap thing is unsuccessful. Yet I'm going to do it. People will say: 'Oh, you're doing hip-hop music? Who does he think he is, a rapper? He's trying to be someone he's not.' When in reality, I'd be someone I'm not by not expressing myself in music." ^[8]

Antonio D. Gates (born June 18, 1980) is an American football tight end for the San Diego Chargers of the National Football League. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003 after playing college basketball at Kent State University. He attended college at Kent State University his junior and senior years after brief stints at Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University.^[1] He starred at Central High School (Detroit, Michigan) playing both basketball and football.

College career[link]

After his senior season of high school basketball, Gates was named runner-up for the Mr. Basketball of Michigan award to Dane Fife.^[2] Originally, Gates enrolled at Michigan State University wanting to play football under then-coach Nick Saban as well as basketball under coach Tom Izzo but upon enrolling Saban wanted him to play only football.^[3] Gates then chose to pursue playing basketball by transferring to Eastern Michigan University to play basketball. He played there part of a season, subsequently played at two junior colleges and eventually played two seasons at Kent State University in northeastern Ohio.

As a Golden Flash, Gates played two seasons as power forward. His junior season he averaged 16.0 points, 8.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game ^[4] His senior season he received Honorable Mention All-American Honors from the Associated Press after averaging 20.6 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. His senior season his team won its first regular season Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship in school history after finishing the regular season with a 24-5 overall record with a 17-1 record in the MAC. Gates helped the Golden Flashes win their second consecutive MAC tournament and earn its resulting berth in the 2002 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament In the NCAA tournament he gave crucial performances that helped Kent State reach the Elite Eight as a 10 seed by upsetting 7 seed Oklahoma State (69-61), 2 seed Alabama (71-58) and 3 seed Pittsburgh (78-73). He finished with a record of 54-16 in two years of playing.^[5]

His jersey number, 44 was retired on Feb 27, 2010 making him just the fourth Golden Flash to receive the honor. His parents names are Vanelia Gates and Henry Gates.

San Diego Chargers[link]

After being told by scouts that he was too much of a “tweener” (6′4″) to make the NBA, Gates arranged a workout in front of NFL scouts. As many as 19 teams were believed to have contacted Gates about a try out. Gates chose to work out first for the San Diego Chargers. Recognizing his potential, the Chargers immediately signed him to a contract as an undrafted free agent.

After finishing a solid 2003 rookie season in which he caught 24 passes for 389 yards and two scores, he was picked by many experts to have a breakout season in 2004. That year, only his second season in the NFL, Gates became quarterback Drew Brees' favorite target, finishing the season with 81 receptions for 964 yards and 13 touchdowns. On December 19, Gates tied the NFL season record for touchdowns by a tight end (13) in a 21–0 win over the Cleveland Browns, and he went on to break that record in an overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts on December 26. Gates was selected to the 2005 Pro Bowl and caught a TD pass from Colts' quarterback Peyton Manning to help the AFC to a 38–27 victory. Additionally, Gates was on the receiving end of a 33 yard pass from teammate Drew Brees in a flea-flicker play selected by fans online.

On August 23, 2005, after holding out for a contract extension, Gates inked a six-year deal worth up to $24 million with the San Diego Chargers. Because of his holdout, Gates was suspended for one game–the home opener against the Dallas Cowboys, a loss. Gates went on to have another stellar season, catching 89 passes for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns, but the Chargers missed the playoffs by a single win.

With the departure of Drew Brees during the offseason, it was assumed that Gates would suffer a decline in production in 2006, with first-year starter Philip Rivers at the helm. Gates had a relatively quiet start to the season, but he finished the year strongly and ended up with 924 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He caught two touchdown passes on December 10 against Denver to help the Chargers clinch their division.

2008[link]

Gates said he was leaning toward having surgery to repair a dislocated left big toe that slowed his performance during the NFL 2008 Playoffs, but was undecided on whether to have surgery or not, "There is higher chance I'm going to have surgery". Gates also pulled out of his 5th Pro Bowl selection because of his injuries alongside his teammate LaDainian Tomlinson. Gates finished the season with 60 receptions for 704 yards and eight touchdowns.

On February 23, 2008, Gates said he would have foot surgery to fix the injury that has hurt him in the final part of the season. He would face a 4–6 month recovery time. He seemed questionable for Week 1 and even sounded worried about his status for the opening day of the 2008 season, however, he ended up playing every game despite complaints that his toe was bothering him during the first half of the season.

2009[link]

For the 2009 NFL regular season, Gates caught 79 passes for 1,157 yards and eight touchdowns. His 1,157 receiving yards is his career high.

2010[link]

Gates began the 2010 season by signing a lucrative 5-year $36 million contract with $20 million guaranteed. In the first nine games of the 2010 season, he had 40 receptions and 9 touchdowns.^[6] Foot injuries slowed the second half of his season. He was invited to the 2011 Pro Bowl, the seventh consecutive year he was chosen as the AFC starter.^[6]

Lima never thought about being a model, although she had won many beauty pageants in elementary school.^[3] However, she had a friend at school who wanted to enter a modeling contest and did not want to enter alone, so Lima entered with her. Both sent in pictures, and the contest sponsor soon asked Lima to come out for the competition. Soon after, at the age of 15, she entered and finished in first place in Ford's "Supermodel of Brazil" model search. She subsequently entered the 1996 Ford "Supermodel of the World" contest and finished in second place.^[4] Three years later, Lima moved to New York City and signed with Elite Model Management. After acquiring representation, Lima's modeling portfolio quickly began to expand, and she appeared in numerous international editions of Vogue and Marie Claire. As a runway model, she has walked the catwalks for designers such as Vera Wang, Giorgio Armani and Valentino, among others. Lima became a GUESS? girl in 2000, appearing in that year's fall ad campaign. She also appeared in the book A Second Decade of Guess? Images.^[5]

Lima is probably best known for her work with Victoria's Secret. Her first fashion show for the company came in 1999, and since being contracted as an Angel in 2000, she has appeared on subsequent shows ever since, opening the show in 2003, 2007, 2008, and 2010.^{[citation needed]} In 2004, she was part of the five Angels promoting Victoria's Secret nationwide in the so-called "Angels Across America"-Tour alongside Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bündchen and Alessandra Ambrosio.^[21] She missed the 2009 show due to her pregnancy.^[22] Lima has appeared on several television ads for the brand, including the praised and criticized^[23][24] "Angel in Venice" commercial of 2003 with Bob Dylan and her solo Victoria's Secret's Super Bowl XLII ad, the single most-seen ad of the game, watched by 103.7 million viewers.^[25] 2008 continued for Lima with hosting the What Is Sexy? program for the E! Lima was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil.^[5] She is a devout Roman Catholic who attends mass every Sunday.^[38][39]

On St. Valentine's Day 2009, Lima married Serbian NBA star Marko Jaric. ^[17][40][41] In May 2009, it was reported that Lima applied for Serbian citizenship.^[42] The couple's daughter, Valentina Lima Jarić (Serbian Cyrillic: Валентина Лима Јарић), was born on November 15, 2009. Valentina was born at 34 weeks gestation, weighing just 4.4 lb (2.0 kg), due to Lima's suffering from preeclampsia.^[43] In March 2012, Lima confirmed that she and her husband are expecting their second child.^[44]

Lima does charitable work helping with an orphanage, "Caminhos da Luz" (Ways of Light), located in Salvador. She helps with construction to expand the orphanage, and buys clothes for poor children in Salvador, Bahia.^[45] She appeared on Var mısın?
