Eleanor Clift

Eleanor Clift (born July 7, 1940) is an American liberal political reporter, television pundit, and author. She is currently a contributor to MSNBC and blogger for The Daily Beast. She is a regular panelist on the nationally syndicated show The McLaughlin Group, which she has compared to "a televised food fight".

Clift is a board member at the IWMF (International Women's Media Foundation).

Early years

Clift was born Eleanor Roeloffs in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of German immigrants from the island of Föhr in the North Sea. She grew up in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, where her parents ran a deli in Sunnyside. Clift was raised a Lutheran and attended Hofstra University and Hunter College. She began her career in 1963 as a secretary at Newsweek, and is one of the first female reporters to earn an internship from the secretary pool. Clift later became White House correspondent for Newsweek and has covered every presidential campaign for the magazine since 1976. She began a broadcast career on The Diane Rehm Show on WAMU-FM, Washington, D.C., as a Friday week-in-review panelist. She became known to listeners for her good-natured acceptance of ribbing from other panelists and callers to the program.

CCTV America

CCTV America is the American division of CCTV News, the English-language news channel run by Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television. It is based in Washington, DC and manages bureaus across North and South America. The service employs a mix of American, international and Chinese journalists and produces Americas-based programming with a focus on Asia for CCTV News.

CCTV America is led by director general Ma Jing with veteran Asia journalist Jim Laurie as executive consultant. It began broadcasting on February 6, 2012.

Eleanor (usually pronounced /ˈɛlənɔːr/ in North America but /ˈɛlənə/ elsewhere, variants Elinor, Ellinor, Elenor, Eleanore, Eleanour, Eleonor(a) among others; short form Leonor and variants) is a feminine given name. It was the name of a number of women of the high nobility in Western Europe during the High Middle Ages, originally from a Provençal name Aliénor.

In modern times, the name was popularly given in the United States in the 1910s to 1920s, peaking at rank 25 in 1920. It declined below rank 600 by the 1970s, but has again risen above rank 150 in the early 2010s.

Origin

The name derives from the Provençal name Aliénor which became Eléanor or Eleonore in the northern Langue d'oïl and from there also to English.

The name probably originates as that of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1120s–-1204). She was the daughter of Aénor de Châtellerault, and it has been suggested that having been baptized Aenor after her mother, she was called alia Aenor, i.e. "the other Aenor" in childhood and would have kept that name in adult life; the name Aénor itself appears to be a Latinization of a Germanic name of uncertain form.

The Daily Beast is an American news reporting and opinion website focusing on politics and pop culture. The site does not limit coverage to only US-specific matters. In a 2015 interview, Editor-in-Chief John Avlon described The Beast's editorial approach, "We seek out scoops, scandals and stories about secret worlds; we love confronting bullies, bigots and hypocrites." The website has won two Webby awards.

History

The Daily Beast began on October 6, 2008, and is owned by IAC. Tina Brown, former editor of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker as well as the short-lived Talk Magazine was the founding editor. Brown stepped down as editor in September 2013.John Avlon, an American journalist and political commentator as well as a CNN contributor, is the site's Editor-in-Chief. Mike Dyer is Chief Strategy and Product Officer and Sarah Chubb serves as Senior Advisor.

The name of the site was taken from a fictional newspaper in Evelyn Waugh's novel Scoop.

On 12 November 2010, The Daily Beast and Newsweek announced a merger deal, creating a combined company, The Newsweek Daily Beast Company. On 3 August 2013 IAC, owner of The Daily Beast, sold Newsweek to IBT Media, owner of the International Business Times. In September 2014, one year after Tina Brown's departure was announced, The Daily Beast reached a new record of 21 million unique visitors - a 60% year-over-year increase in readers, accompanied by a 300% increase in the overall size of its social media community. In 2015, Ken Doctor, a news analyst for Nieman Lab, reported on Capital New York that The Daily Beast is, "one of the fastest-growing news and information sites year-over-year in the 'General News' category".
