The 311 Tsunami at Kamaishi port in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
This video is somehow unique, since it shows the actual comings and goings of the tsunami and not just the arrival of the biggest wave. It starts a couple of minutes after the earthquake, probably somewhere around 2:50 and 2:55 pm and then goes on for at least one and a half hour, plus some footage of the night and the next day.
You can see how the water level falls in the minutes after the earthquake, the sign of an approaching tsunami. Then around 18:00 the tsunami begins to flood the port. The most impressive footage occurs during the two minutes after 24:00, then the tsunami overcomes the seawalls and smashes with incredible force into the city.

It's behind the road bridge, on the right side. The building with the pyramid shaped tower. The video was probably shot out of this tower.
At the entrance of the bay, a large structure can be seen. That structure is the Kamaishi Breakwater. It was intended to save the town from tsunamis and took 30 years to build until being completed in 2009. In 2010 it got its own entry in the Guinness Book of World Records, for it was the deepest breakwater on the planet.
At 18:00 the waves begin flowing over the breakwater and for the next ten minutes it disappears in foam. When it reappears at 34:00 it is torn apart - it took Mother Nature merely ten minutes to smash something which took humans 30 years to build.
Still it probably wasn't completely useless. Kamaishi was inundated in water up to 38 feet / 11.5 metres high, but that was behind the breakwater. In front of the breakwater, the water reached up to 100 feet / 30.5 metres.
Ryoishi, a little fishing village further north Kamaishi Bay, which was not protected by the breakwater, got destroyed by waves up to 64 feet / 19.5 metres high.
So the breakwater probably absorbed some of the tsunami's energy and deflected some more to the north side of the bay, which effectively halved the tsunami's height in Kamaishi city. Unfortunately that doesn't help at all if you're confronted with a monster tsunami, which even with its height halved is still higher than your defenses.

Notes:
If you study the video carefully, you can see that the tsunami comes in several sweeps, but without much retreating between those sweeps. The initial wave comes at 01:40, a second and highest one arrives at 10:30. It's interesting to see that in this case, the tsunami doesn't resemble a wave, but more a incredibly fast and high rising tide.
The highest water level can be observed at 12:30. Its hard to see, but if you compare the height of the central power pole in the harbor with what's actually sticking out of the water at that moment (only the tip of the pole), then the tsunami height must've been easily ten meters or more.

And then, at 7:30 when the water retreats, you can see the bottom of the whole harbor and bay. Just minutes before, nothing of it was even slightly visible.

The 311 tsunami Ryoishi, a little fishing village a few kilometres north of Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
The village wasn't protected by the Kamaishi breakwater as Kamaishi itself was, so the waves turned out much bigger - up to 19.5 metres. You don't see an actual wave devastating Ryoishi, but rather a fast rising tide.
At 4:14 you can see this "tide" rising at the seawall. This seawall is nine metres high, and it doesn't take the tsunami more than a minute to rise from nearly zero to those nine metres. And that's only the first wave. At 07:15 you can see the second wave approaching, while the water left over from the first one is still nine metres high. Two minutes later, the water level has doubled. And from then on it's only mayhem...
At 29:00 you can see the remains of the nine metre high seawall - the second wave of the tsunami toppled and tore it apart.

I don't understand much japanese, but at first, those people are clearly easygoing. They have obviously faith in their tsunami defenses, the seawalls and, of course, the world-record setting giant Kamaishi breakwater out in the bay.
But then, around 9:00 they begin to realize that something's not right - and are absolutely and justifiably shocked when the tsunami starts tearing their town apart a few minutes later.

Iwate Prefecture (岩手県, Iwate-ken?) is the second largest prefecture of Japan after Hokkaido. It is located in the Tōhoku region of Honshū island and contains the island's easternmost point. The capital is Morioka. Iwate has the lowest population density of any prefecture outside Hokkaido. Famous attractions include the Buddhist temples of Hiraizumi, including Chūson-ji and Mōtsū-ji with their treasures, Fujiwara no Sato, a movie lot and theme park in Esashi Ward, Oshu City, Tenshochi, a park in Kitakami City known for its big, old cherry trees and Morioka Castle in Morioka City.
There are several theories about the origin of the name ‘Iwate’, but the most well known is the tale, 'Oni no tegata,' which is associated with the Mitsuishi or "Three Rocks" Shrine in Morioka. These rocks are said to have been thrown down into Morioka by an eruption of Mt. Iwate. According to the legend, there was once a devil who often tormented and harassed the local people. When the people prayed to the spirits of Mitsuishi for protection, the devil was immediately shackled to these rocks and forced to make a promise never to trouble the people again.[citation needed] As a seal of his oath the devil made a handprint on one of the rocks, thus giving rise to the name Iwate, literally ‘rock hand’. Even now after a rainfall it is said that the devil’s hand print can still be seen there.

Tsunami at Kamaishi port, Iwate Prefecture
The 311 Tsunami at Kamaishi port in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Notes: This video is somehow unique, since it shows the actual comings and goings of the tsunami and not just the arrival of the biggest wave. It starts a couple of minutes after the earthquake, probably somewhere around 2:50 and 2:55 pm and then goes on for at least one and a half hour, plus some footage of the night and the next day. You can see how the water level falls in the minutes after the earthquake, the sign of an approaching tsunami. Then around 18:00 the tsunami begins to flood the port. The most impressive footage occurs during the two minutes after 24:00, then the tsunami overcomes the seawalls and smashes with incredible force into the city. The building from which this video was shot can be seen on a NHK vide... -

The 311 tsunami at Cape Hirota, near the city of Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Notes: If you study the video carefully, you can see that the tsunami comes in several sweeps, but without much retreating between those sweeps. The initial wave comes at 01:40, a second and highest one arrives at 10:30. It's interesting to see that in this case, the tsunami doesn't resemble a wave, but more a incredibly fast and high rising tide. The highest water level can be observed at 12:30. Its hard to see, but if you compare the height of the central power pole in the harbor with what's actually sticking out of the water at that moment (only the tip of the pole), then the tsunami height must've been easily ten meters or more. -

Tsunami at Ryoishi port, near Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture
The 311 tsunami Ryoishi, a little fishing village a few kilometres north of Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Notes: The village wasn't protected by the Kamaishi breakwater as Kamaishi itself was, so the waves turned out much bigger - up to 19.5 metres. You don't see an actual wave devastating Ryoishi, but rather a fast rising tide. At 4:14 you can see this "tide" rising at the seawall. This seawall is nine metres high, and it doesn't take the tsunami more than a minute to rise from nearly zero to those nine metres. And that's only the first wave. At 07:15 you can see the second wave approaching, while the water left over from the first one is still nine metres high. Two minutes later, the water level has doubled. And from then on it's only mayhem... At 29:00 you can see the remains... -

Notes: The location is a hill on the north side of the bay, to the right of the road bridge, the City Office and the NHK camera which also filmed the tsunami. I don't understand much japanese, but at first, those people are clearly easygoing. They have obviously faith in their tsunami defenses, the seawalls and, of course, the world-record setting giant Kamaishi breakwater out in the bay. But then, around 9:00 they begin to realize that something's not right - and are absolutely and justifiably shocked when the tsunami starts tearing their town apart a few minutes later. -

The 311 tsunami at the Kamaishi City Office in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Notes: The video's taken at least one or two minutes after the tsunami overcame the city's tsunami walls. Yet it took the water time to flow through the streets. There are several other videos, taken from the hills on the north side (to the left and behind this video's position) where the people can see the tsunami penetrating the defenses, a long time before citizens who are still in the town realize what's happening.

This video is somehow unique, since it shows the actual comings and goings of the tsunami and not just the arrival of the biggest wave. It starts a couple of minutes after the earthquake, probably somewhere around 2:50 and 2:55 pm and then goes on for at least one and a half hour, plus some footage of the night and the next day.
You can see how the water level falls in the minutes after the earthquake, the sign of an approaching tsunami. Then around 18:00 the tsunami begins to flood the port. The most impressive footage occurs during the two minutes after 24:00, then the tsunami overcomes the seawalls and smashes with incredible force into the city.

It's behind the road bridge, on the right side. The building with the pyramid shaped tower. The video was probably shot out of this tower.
At the entrance of the bay, a large structure can be seen. That structure is the Kamaishi Breakwater. It was intended to save the town from tsunamis and took 30 years to build until being completed in 2009. In 2010 it got its own entry in the Guinness Book of World Records, for it was the deepest breakwater on the planet.
At 18:00 the waves begin flowing over the breakwater and for the next ten minutes it disappears in foam. When it reappears at 34:00 it is torn apart - it took Mother Nature merely ten minutes to smash something which took humans 30 years to build.
Still it probably wasn't completely useless. Kamaishi was inundated in water up to 38 feet / 11.5 metres high, but that was behind the breakwater. In front of the breakwater, the water reached up to 100 feet / 30.5 metres.
Ryoishi, a little fishing village further north Kamaishi Bay, which was not protected by the breakwater, got destroyed by waves up to 64 feet / 19.5 metres high.
So the breakwater probably absorbed some of the tsunami's energy and deflected some more to the north side of the bay, which effectively halved the tsunami's height in Kamaishi city. Unfortunately that doesn't help at all if you're confronted with a monster tsunami, which even with its height halved is still higher than your defenses.

The 311 tsunami Ryoishi, a little fishing village a few kilometres north of Kamaishi in Iwate Prefecture, Japan.
Notes:
The village wasn't protected by the Kamaishi breakwater as Kamaishi itself was, so the waves turned out much bigger - up to 19.5 metres. You don't see an actual wave devastating Ryoishi, but rather a fast rising tide.
At 4:14 you can see this "tide" rising at the seawall. This seawall is nine metres high, and it doesn't take the tsunami more than a minute to rise from nearly zero to those nine metres. And that's only the first wave. At 07:15 you can see the second wave approaching, while the water left over from the first one is still nine metres high. Two minutes later, the water level has doubled. And from then on it's only mayhem...
At 29:00 you can see the remains of the nine metre high seawall - the second wave of the tsunami toppled and tore it apart.

I don't understand much japanese, but at first, those people are clearly easygoing. They have obviously faith in their tsunami defenses, the seawalls and, of course, the world-record setting giant Kamaishi breakwater out in the bay.
But then, around 9:00 they begin to realize that something's not right - and are absolutely and justifiably shocked when the tsunami starts tearing their town apart a few minutes later.

Located in northern Japan, Iwate Prefecture is the second-largest province among Japan’s 47 prefectures next to Hokkaido. With a total area of 15,275 km2（5,898 mile2）, it is larger than the world’s 160th-largest nation of East Timor（14,919 km2 = 5,760 mile2）. That being the case, Iwate has numerous areas to see such as the ocean, mountains and highlands.
Landmarks
After enjoying World Heritage sites such as Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture’s largest city of Morioka which is the starting point for any sightseeing and the beautiful Jodogahama Beach which is said to be a paradise on Earth, you can also head for places such as Hachimantai where you can soak in the bubbling waters of an onsen while sipping on some sake.
Food
If you’re looking for cuisine, Morioka is the ideal place. The 3 greatest noodle dishes of wanko soba, jajamen and Morioka reimen can be found in Morioka City. The seafood to be found off the Sanriku coast is also famous. This area which has cold and warm currents making contact is well-known as an excellent fishing ground with great hauls and as one of the top three fishing areas on the planet. Sea urchin, scallop, salmon and abalone are especially good.
Getting Around
The JR Tohoku Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is convenient to reach Morioka and Ichinoseki from Tokyo. With the stations there as your starting point, renting a car is handy. There are also plenty of long-distance bus lines running among the cities of Iwate.
Accommodations
There are accommodations at Morioka Station where the Shinkansen stops as well as Ichinoseki Station which is the launching point for any sightseeing in Hiraizumi.

- Geography
Sado is located in the Sea of Japan and is a part of Niigata Prefecture. The island is 855 km2（330 mile2）in area which is bigger than the 23 wards of Tokyo（621 km2 = 240 mile2）and the country of Bahrain（758 km2 = 293 mile2）which is ranked 184th in the world. The tourist season is in summer, but there are also people who make the effort to come in winter to view the rough waves of the Sea of Japan at that time.
- Landmarks
Landmarks include Sado Gold Mine whose mountain top has been cleaved in half due to the efforts of gold mining, Toki Forest Park where you can see the Japanese crested ibis which is an endangered species, and the Ogi Diving Center where you can get a unique sea kayaking experience through blue grottoes and the waters of the Sea of Japan. There are also plenty of highlights such as Chokoku-ji Temple where you can have more than 30 Buddhist experiences including one involving entering a coffin. Usually between April and October, you can view traditional nighttime performances of Noh theater which occur outside the temple, and with Sado being the base for the world-famous Kodo wadaiko drumming troupe, you can hear the drumming amid nature as one example of art and nature splendidly co-existing.
- Food
The specialty of Sado Island which is completely encircled by the Sea of Japan has got to be seafood. It’s no exaggeration to say that sushi with several times the taste can be savored here at only a fraction of the price charged in Tokyo. The new local dish that has been all the rage is buri-katsudon or deep-fried yellowtail on rice. Natural yellowtail deep-fried as a cutlet covered in a special sauce consisting of ago-dashi soy sauce topped on Sado rice makes for a superb dish. The sake brewed from the nature of the island is also delicious, and the island is also home to the brewery for Manotsuru sake which is the sake served in first class on Air France flights.
- Getting Around
It takes the better part of 2 hours from Tokyo to Niigata Station, followed by a 15-minute bus ride to Niigata Port. And then it’s a trip by ferry for 1-2.5 hours from Niigata Port to Ryotsu Port on Sado Island.
Rental cars are handy for getting around the island. There is no train service. Rental electric bicycles are also convenient.
- Accommodations
Accommodations around Ryotsu Port are convenient on the first day. Aikawa and Mano which are located in the center of the island are also great as starting points for sightseeing.

This boardwalk was created so that anyone could freely and easily enjoy a stroll through the woods. The project was created with the goal of making a trail without altering the woods.
Trails like this are not unusual overseas, but this is one of only three in Japan: Naeba, Iwate, and Hokuriku. The Naeba trail is the longest in the country at nearly 2km, and the view is known for its beauty.
