Lowell Mellett & FDR
Sometime between August 22 and 27, 1940
Oval Office
President Franklin Roosevelt discusses with his aid Lowell Mellett (the head of the Office of Government Reports) the idea of having low-level officials spread dirt on Roosevelt's opponent, Republican presidential nominee Wendell Willkie, who was then separated from his wife and engaged in an affair. Roosevelt recalls the highly publicized extramarital affair that New York City mayor, Jimmy Walker, had while FDR was governor of New York State. The president notes about Walker's girlfriend (and later wife): "She was an extremely attractive little tart." Retelling how Walker paid his wife to stay with him for appearances' sake while the mayor was on trial for corruption, Roosevelt contemplates the idea that Willkie might be doing the same. He suggests that linking Walker and Willkie's affairs might be one method of spreading the news about Willkie's private life.
Roosevelt also discusses a dirty campaign tactic perpetrated by Harry Daugherty, Republican President Warren G. Harding's campaign manager and later Attorney General. Roosevelt claims that during the 1920 presidential election Daugherty deliberately spread a rumor about his own candidate to the effect that Harding had black ancestry. Roosevelt believes that Daugherty did this so that it would appear that Harding's opponents were trying to smear him with gossip. Roosevelt ran for vice-president that year on a ticket with Democratic presidential nominee James Cox. Harding and his running mate Calvin Coolidge handily beat the Democratic nominees that year. FDR seems to see this story as a cautionary tale that shows that neither he nor anyone high in his administration should openly press the point of Willkie's infidelity. He believes that local and state Democratic officials should do it instead, so that it will not reflect poorly on himself as a mudslinger.
Roosevelt and Mellett also discuss the 1940 gubernatorial election in Georgia. Roosevelt was eager that former Georgia governor, Eugene Talmadge, who a segregationist and openly anti-Roosevelt, be defeated in the primaries. However, two other Democratic candidates (Columbus Roberts and Abit Nix) split the anti-Talmadge vote, and Talmadge won both the primary and the subsequent election.

Title reads: "Mr Wilkie wants to know".
London.
Wendell Wilkie talks to local people in air raid shelter during a Blitz.
Natural sound. Various shots inside a municipal shelter (looks like Underground Station). The shelter is crowded with people on bunks. Wendell Wilkie enters accompanied by journalists. He wears an Air Raid Warden's tin hat. Wilkie chats to a man sitting on a bunk. Wilkie comments on good spirit and bravery of people of Britain. The people in the shelter cheer and sing "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow". Wilkie talks to camera about the high morale of the British which Hitler will never beat and how America will help England win.
Note: Wilkie is Republican Politician and ex-presidential candidate.
Note: good item for showing Londoner's spirit during the Blitz.
Note: alternative spelling of Willkie.
Amendment June 2011:
Mr Williams, the young lad next to the old man being interviewed, has written in to say that this was filmed underneath Methodist Central Hall just off Parliament Square.

Clare Boothe Luce: Legendary Playwright, Politician & Social Seductress - Biography (1997)

Clare Boothe Luce (March 10, 1903 -- October 9, 1987) was the first American woman appointed to a major ambassadorial post abroad. A versatile author, she is best known for her 1936 hit play The Women, which had an all-female cast. Her writings extended from drama and screen scenarios to fiction, journalism, and war reportage. She was the wife of Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life, and Fortune.
Politically, Luce was a Republican, who became steadily more conservative in later life. In her youth, however, she briefly aligned herself with the Democratic liberalism of Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a protege of Bernard Baruch. Although she was a strong supporter of the Anglo-American alliance in World War II, she remained outspokenly critical of the British presence in India. A charismatic and forceful public speaker, especially after her conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1946, she campaigned for every Republican presidential candidate from Wendell Willkie to Ronald Reagan.
Luce was born Ann Clare Boothe in New York City on March 10, 1903, the second child of Anna Clara Schneider (aka Ann Snyder Murphy; aka Ann Boothe, aka Ann Clare Austin) and William Franklin Boothe (aka "John J. Murphy"; aka "Jord Murfe"). Her parents were not married and would separate in 1912. Her father, a sophisticated man and a brilliant violinist, instilled in his daughter a love of literature, if not of music. But William Boothe had trouble holding down any job, and spent years as a travelling salesman. Parts of young Clare's childhood were spent in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee, Chicago, Illinois, and Union City, New Jersey as well as New York City. Clare Boothe had an elder brother, David Franklin Boothe.
She attended the Cathedral schools in Garden City and Tarrytown, New York, graduating first in her class in 1919 at the age of 16. [Source: Clare Boothe Luce, Author and Diplomat, by Joseph Lyons, Chelsey House Publisher, 1989, p 26] . Her ambitious mother's initial plan for her was to become an actress. Clare understudied Mary Pickford on Broadway at age 10, and had a small part in Thomas Edison's 1915 movie, The Heart of a Waif.[8] After a tour of Europe with her mother and stepfather, Dr. Albert E. Austin, whom Ann Boothe married in 1919, she became interested in the women's suffrage movement, and was hired by Alva Belmont to work for the National Woman's Party in Washington, D.C. and Seneca Falls, N.Y.[9]
Highly intelligent, ambitious, and blessed with a deceptively fragile blonde beauty, the young Clare Boothe soon abandoned ideological feminism to pursue other interests. She wed George Tuttle Brokaw, millionaire heir to a New York clothing fortune, on August 10, 1923, at the age of 20. They had one daughter, Ann Clare Brokaw (August 22, 1924 -- January 11, 1944). According to Boothe, Brokaw was a hopeless alcoholic, and the marriage ended in divorce in 1929.[10]
On November 23, 1935, Clare Boothe married Henry Robinson Luce, the publisher of Time, Life, and Fortune. She thereafter called herself Clare Boothe Luce, a frequently-misspelled name that was often confused with that of her exact contemporary Claire Luce, a stage and film actress. As a professional writer, Luce continued to use her maiden name.
On January 11, 1944, her daughter and only child Ann Clare Brokaw, a senior at Stanford University, was killed in an automobile accident. As a result of this tragedy, Luce explored psychotherapy and religion, joining the Roman Catholic Church in 1946.[11] She became an ardent essayist and lecturer in celebration of her faith, and was ultimately honored by being named a Dame of Malta.
The marriage between Clare and Henry was a happy one. Henry Luce was by any standard an extremely successful man, but his physical awkwardness, lack of humor, and newsman's discomfort with any conversation that was not strictly factual put him in awe of his beautiful wife's social poise, wit, and fertile imagination.[12] Clare's years as managing editor of "Vanity Fair" left her with an avid interest in journalism (she suggested the idea of "Life" magazine to her husband before it was developed internally).[13] Henry Luce himself was generous in encouraging her to write for "Life," but the question of how much coverage she should be accorded in "Time," as she grew more famous, was always a careful balancing act for Henry, since he did not want to be accused of nepotism.

Henry A. Wallace Interview: 33rd Vice President of the United States

Henry Agard Wallace (October 7, 1888 -- November 18, 1965) was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941--1945), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933--1940), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945--1946). In the 1948 presidential election, Wallace was the nominee of the Progressive Party.
Henry A. Wallace, son of Henry Cantwell Wallace, was born on October 7, 1888, at a farm near Orient, Adair County, Iowa. Wallace attended Iowa State College at Ames where he was a brother in the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. At Iowa State he became friends with George Washington Carver, spending time together collecting botanical specimens. He graduated in 1910 with a degree in animal husbandry. He worked on the editorial staff of the family-owned paper Wallaces' Farmer in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1910 to 1924 and edited the publication from 1924 to 1929. He experimented with breeding high-yielding hybrid corn, and authored many publications on agriculture. In 1915 he devised the first corn-hog ratio charts indicating the probable course of markets. Wallace was also a self-taught "practicing statistician", co-authoring an influential article with George W. Snedecor on computational methods for correlations and regressions and publishing sophisticated statistical studies in the pages of Wallaces' Farmer. Snedecor eventually invited Wallace to teach a graduate course on least squares.
With an inheritance of a few thousand dollars that had been left to his wife, the former Ilo Browne, whom he married in 1914, Wallace founded the Hi-Bred Corn Company in 1926, which later became Pioneer Hi-Bred, a major agriculture corporation, acquired in 1999 by the Dupont Corporation for approximately $10 billion.
Wallace was raised as a Presbyterian, but left that denomination early in life. He spent most of his early life exploring other religious faiths and traditions. For many years, he had been closely associated with famous Russian artist and writer Nicholas Roerich. According to Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., "Wallace's search for inner light took him to strange prophets.... It was in this search that he encountered Nicholas Roerich, a Russian emigre, painter, theosophist. Wallace did Roerich a number of favors, including sending him on an expedition to Central Asia presumably to collect drought-resistant grasses. In due course, H.A. [Wallace] became disillusioned with Roerich and turned almost viciously against him." Wallace eventually settled on Episcopalianism.
Henry Wallace was also a Freemason and attained the 32nd Degree in the Scottish Rite.
In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed Wallace United States Secretary of Agriculture in his Cabinet, a post his father, Henry Cantwell Wallace, had occupied from 1921 to 1924. Wallace had been a liberal Republican, but he supported Roosevelt's New Deal and soon switched to the Democratic Party. Wallace served as Secretary of Agriculture until September 1940, when he resigned, having been nominated for Vice President as Roosevelt's running mate in the 1940 presidential election. During his tenure as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture he ordered a very unpopular strategy of slaughtering pigs and plowing up cotton fields in rural America to drive the price of these commodities back up in order to improve American farmers' financial situation. He also advocated the ever-normal granary concept.

In the GOP horse race, here comes John Kasich. He’s rapidly gained in the polls. Jeb Bush and Rand Paul’s campaigns have been faltering. Donald Trump continues to dominate. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Non-politicians are having a moment in the Republican primary.
It's not just Donald Trump. Since July, two other candidates have seen their numbers rise significantly in national polls: retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former CEO Carly Fiorina, neither of whom have held public office in the past.
Historical precedent goes against them. Virtually every presidential nominee since the 1900shas held a previous elected office, or, more rarely, another high-level government position, not to mention the backing of their party establishment. The exception to the rule, businessman Wendell Willkie, was soundly defeated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1940.”*

November 23, 1963 -- This NBC-Radio footage was aired about 24 hours after President Kennedy had been shot and killed in Dallas, Texas, by assassin Lee Harvey Oswald.
Dallas District Attorney Henry Wade is interviewed briefly by NBC-Radio and discusses the proposed timeline for Lee Oswald's upcoming trial. Oswald, of course, was himself murdered the very next day, so Wade's comments here have become moot ones.
We also hear from ex-President Harry S. Truman after he arrives in Washington to pay his respects to the fallen President, John F. Kennedy.
Other miscellaneous news reports are also included at the end of this video.
