Why Rationalism is the way to go.
This video consists of two examples for each epistemologic processes. The "someone goes behind the wall" is a classic example when explaining rationalism and empiricism. The cliff example is conjecture based solely on how these two epistemologists act (not think) in the wall example: the empiricist goes after, while the rationalist stays still.

"Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) is one of the most influential philosophers in the history of Western philosophy. His contributions to metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics have had a profound impact on almost every philosophical movement that followed him."
In epistemology, a priori propositions can be known independent of (prior to) experience, whereas a posteriori propositions can be known only on the basis of experience (after experience). Thus, the distinction between a priori and a posteriori corresponds roughly to the distinction between nonempirical and empirical knowledge.
The a priori / a posteriori distinction is applied to ways of knowing, propositions, arguments, and concepts. Because of its dependence upon verification by experience, the foundation for classifying a proposition as a posteriori is more easily grasped. An a priori concept can be acquired independently of experience, which may include, but is not necessarily confined to innate concepts.
In logic, a proposition is a statement, couched as a declarative sentence, that affirms or denies the predicate, and that is either true or false. An analytic proposition can variously be described as a proposition whose predicate concept is contained within its subject concept, a proposition that is true by definition, whose truth depends solely on the meaning of its terms, or a proposition that is made true solely by the conventions of language. Analytic propositions, because truth is built in by virtue of terminology, are all a priori in that they do not require experience. Conversely, a synthetic proposition is a proposition whose predicate concept is not contained in its subject concept. Thus, synthetic propositions are not true simply in virtue of their meaning, so their truth must be assessed on the basis of experience.
Kant, in Critique of Pure Reason, discussed the possible combinations of analytic versus synthetic with a priori versus a posteriori propositions, which would yield four possible combinations of propositions:
1. analytic a priori: according to Kant, all analytic propositions are a priori.
2. synthetic a priori: Kant maintains that all important metaphysical knowledge is of synthetic a priori propositions
3. analytic a posteriori Kant argues that there are NONE, because analytic indicates a priori.
4. synthetic a posteriori knowledge of the truth value of such propositions depends on experience.

"This clip describes Immanuel Kant's great synthesis of the rationalist and empiricist philosophical traditions. Kant famously stated "Percepts without concepts are empty; concepts without percepts are blind." Kant argues that our experience of reality is not merely passive, but rather that the mind actively structures how we encounter the world.
The clip then explains the difference between analytic/synthetic judgments and a priori/a posteriori judgments. It then closes with a brief description of Kant's deontological ethical theory, and his critique of metaphysics."

In this presentation, Dr.Viswanathan traces how liberal democracy happens to be a political expression of enlightenment rationalism, by tracing the political positions upheld during his time by Sahodran Ayyappan (1889- 1968), arguably the first and foremost rationalist of Kerala. Sahodaran himself defined his 'rationalism' thus: "Rationalism, after all, is the weighing of evidence by clear thinking and sifting truth from falsehood in all matters amenable to investigation". Like Ambedkar, Ayyappan too was not active in anti-British struggles in Pre independence India. Their politics was aimed at emancipation of the large section of the Indians considered 'impure' by the 'traditional society'. Thus, they realized that transition to a post traditional society through enlightenment style critique of the values and mores of the existing society should be their greatest priority.

What Is Rationalism?|The John Ankerberg Show|Shubhsandeshtv
Rationalism is the view that "regards reason as the chief source and test of knowledge" or "any view appealing to reason as a source of knowledge or justification".More formally, rationalism is defined as a methodology or a theory "in which the criterion of the truth is not sensory but intellectual and deductive".Rationalists believe reality has an intrinsically logical structure.

Can rationalism and pluralism be reconciled in the liberal tradition? Why not?
How much authority is proper for intermediate groups? When does pluralism shift into illiberalism? How can the balance of power between intermediate groups b

Dialectical materialism, the philosophy propounded by Marx and Engels, is nothing more than an imaginary theory with absolutely no connection to the way nature or society really works. Marxists however hold that this theory holds the key to understand everything human-history, natural science, economics, you name it! In spite of the general waning of interest in Marxism all over the world, many pockets in the third world still continue to be under its influence. It is important for freethinkers in these regions to understand it and to debunk it, just as in the case of other belief systems.

The classical liberal economist F.A. Hayek frequently wrote on the history of liberal ideas, trying both to recover half-forgotten truths and to find the sources of what he viewed as pernicious intellectual errors. He believed that understanding past ideas was important for the correct diagnosis of contemporary ills, since those had so often come from theoretical and philosophical mistakes. He went so far as to propose naming what became the Mont Pelerin Society, the preeminent postwar grouping of free-market economists, the 'Acton-Tocqueville Society,' after two nineteenth century liberal political theorists whose writings on economics were cursory at best.
In this talk, Jacob T. Levy describes and assesses Hayek's history of liberal thought, suggesting that he correctly identified key issues in liberal constitutionalism but was too quick to jump from constitutional to economic questions. He wrote histories of rationalism and pluralism in liberal thought, but mistook them for histories of economic planning and free markets. Clarifying this can help us see the often-uneasy relationship between pluralism and markets, and to recognise trade-offs that classical liberal political economy sometimes has to make.

This an introductory lecture to the epistemological groundings Rationalism in early modern European thought & the role of Rene Descartes' idea of the "cogito" argument in relation to it. The lecture tries to give a grounding for Descartes' methodological doubt was coming from, and why it was so pivotal in setting up the rest of the philosophy. The lecture was given for a class I was teaching in early 2011, and is organized towards threads emerging within conversations in the class, hence it's length.
