This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Orson Scott Card discusses the importance of creativity and how it can be fostered.
Orson Scott Card is the author of the novels Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow, and Speaker for the Dead, which are widely read by adults and younger readers, and are increasingly used in schools. His most recent series, the young adult Pathfinder series (Pathfinder, Ruins, Visitors) and the fantasy Mithermages series (Lost Gate, Gate Thief), are taking readers in new directions. Besides these and other science fiction novels, Orson writes contemporary fantasy (Magic Street, Enchantment, Lost Boys), biblical novels (Stone Tables, Rachel and Leah), the American frontier fantasy series The Tales of Alvin Maker (beginning with Seventh Son), poetry (An Open Book), and many plays and scripts, including his “freshened” Shakespeare scripts for Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew and The Merchant of Venice. Orson was born in Washington and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he teaches occasional classes and workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University. Orson currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Kristine Allen Card, where his primary activities are writing a review column for the local Rhino Times and feeding birds, squirrels, chipmunks, possums and raccoons on the patio.

Advent Shadow was a video game developed for the PlayStation Portable handheld and a side story of Advent Rising, however, the game was cancelled in January 2006.
It follows the story of Marin Steel, a mercenary pilot thrust into a saga of intergalactic proportions. In the midst of extracting herself from a hostile negotiation, Marin is interrupted by a planetary invasion led by monstrous aliens bent on human genocide. In her efforts to escape the dying world, she encounters young Gideon Wyeth, the protagonist of Advent Rising, and together they find themselves swept up in a massive struggle against dire forces bent on the destruction of humanity.
Unfortunately, Majesco suffered some financial difficulties, and due to the poor sale of Advent Shadow's console predecessor, Advent Rising, the game had been quietly cancelled in January 2006.

My first interview is with my neighbor and friend, Heather Hayes. Heather writes regularly for the Deseret News as an arts writer and reviewer. A native of Salt Lake City, Hayes is glad to be back in her hometown with its pristine mountains and major-league arts scene. Trained extensively in classical music and ballet, she worked as playbill editor and writer-in-residence on the staff of Ballet West for a number of years. Hayes is a guitar instructor, has sung lead in several folk/rock bands and is a member of the Salt Lake Choral Artists. She has four children, loves skiing, cooking and cheering for the University of Utah, where she graduated cum laude with a B.A. in communications and a B.S. in political science.

Joseph A. Cannon is the editor of the Deseret News, Utah's oldest newspaper that has a Sunday circulation of more than 83,000. He was hired as editor in 2006, taking a job that his grandfather, Joseph J. Cannon, and his great grandfather, George Q. Cannon, had filled before him.
The Audit Bureau of Circulations, an organization that tracks newspaper circulation numbers, reported in November of 2009 that newspapers, on average, were seeing their daily circulation numbers drop by 10.6 percent. The Deseret News has seen circulation increases in 2007 and 2008. In fall of 2009, the Deseret News experienced a decline of 3.4 percent in circulation numbers but an increase of 4.1 percent in the circulation of its Sunday paper.
Soon after becoming editor, Mr. Cannon said the paper needed to acknowledge that many of its readers are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the paper shouldn't shy away from covering issues that would be especially interesting to its LDS readers. It launched a weekly subset of the newspaper called Mormon Times that not only goes to Utah subscribers but also to others out of state.
Before coming to the Deseret News, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, where he specialized in environmental, natural resources, energy and administrative law. He was also the co-leader of the Public Practice & Political Law Team.
He played the leading role in the purchase of Geneva Steel from USX Corporation and was its CEO until 2001. The reopening of the plant in 1987 put back to work thousands of people who had lost their jobs.
From 1985 to 1987, he was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of the law firm of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, a firm that specialized in environmental and administrative law. He was the assistant administrator for Air and Radiation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1983 to 1985. During his time with the EPA, Mr. Cannon successfully led an effort to get lead out of gasoline, a move that reduced the amount of harmful pollution going into the air.
From 2001 to 2006, he served as chairman of the Utah State Republican Party and as a member of the Republican National Committee.
He was on the Reagan-Bush Committee in 1980 where he assisted in the preparation and editing of presidential debate briefing papers for the Carter-Reagan debates. He also served on the Regan-Bush Presidential Transition Team. He was on the George Bush for President Committee from 1979 to 1980.
He was named "Entrepreneur of the Year" in 1987 by Utah Business Digest and "Businessman of the Year" in 1988 by the Utah Manufacturers Association. He was also inducted into the Utah Business Hall of Fame in 1991.
He earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Brigham Young University in 1974 and graduated with a law degree, cum laude, from Brigham Young University in 1977.
Married to Janeal Barney, Mr. Cannon resides in Provo, Utah. They have seven children.

The Fight Is ON! Utah demands federal government hand over lands and issues Dec 31, 2014 deadline under the Utah Transfer of Public Lands Act.
Kane County (Utah) Commissioner Doug Heaton visited Anchorage, Alaska for the American Lands Council and gave this presentation to United for Liberty Alaska cosponsored by the Alaska Policy Forum.
Should Alaska Do the Same?
In October, 2014 an Alaska delegation lead by Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell joined 14 other states in Salt Lake City and unanimously endorsed a public policy statement that calls on the federal government to turn its lands over to state control [Deseret News, 10/9/14]. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865612789/Western-state-leaders-convene-in-Salt-Lake-City-urge-control-of-federal-lands.html?pg=all
See video [34 min] Lt. Gov Treadwell @ 19:34 min. http://www.americanlandscouncil.org/oct_2014_press_conference
Ultimately, transfer of the vast federal land holdings in the west is the ultimate solution to these and the million other problems in the federal - state relationship:
- Feds refuse King Cove permission to build life saving road to Cold Bay
- Feds harass senior citizen on Yukon River
- Feds take over wildlife management and shut down oil drilling, mining and timber industries
This is one of the most important reform initiatives for the future of both Alaska and America!
