"The Poor People of Paris" is the English name of a popular song from France. The original French language song was "La goualante du pauvre Jean" ("The Ballad of Poor John"), with music by Marguerite Monnot and words by René Rouzaud. Edith Piaf had one of her biggest hits with the original French version. The song was adapted by American songwriter Jack Lawrence in 1954, and he wrote English lyrics, which are considerably different from the French. The English-language title arises in part from a misinterpretation of the French title, as "pauvre Jean" was taken for the same-sounding "pauvres gens," which translates as "poor people." Lawrence's lyrics, which pronounce Paris in the French style, as "PaREE," are seldom heard. Most of the popular recordings of the song in the English-speaking world have been instrumentals. In the same year, the piano version by Winifred Atwell (Decca Records) was number one in the UK Singles Chart for three weeks.

This is my attempt to play Winifred Atwell's arrangement of 'The Charleston' at a recital I gave for the Billy Mayerl Society at Shellwood in 2003. My playing may be riddled with wrong notes and at least one cop-out where Winnie's version is just too difficult for my fingers and I've had to substitute my own, but it's probably faster than I could manage now (!). I hope it captures at least some of the flavour of her remarkable arrangement. It is reproduced here by kind permission of Mike Lorenzini, who hosted the concert and made the video recording.

Winifred Atwell. Nacida en Tunapuna en Trinidad y Tobago en 1910 ó 1914 (es incierta su fecha de nacimiento), se fue a Trinidad en la década de 1940 y viajó a los Estados Unidos para estudiar con Alexander Borovsky y, en 1946, se trasladó a Londres , donde había ganado una beca en la Royal Academy of Music . Ella se convirtió en el primer pianista femenina que se le otorgó la más alta calificación de la Academia de música.
