I thought it would be fun to film propane balloons exploding in slow motion, and I tried popping them a bunch of different ways. I took some user suggestions like flying a drone with a sparkler attached into a balloon, and filling a balloon with a explosive mixture of propane and oxygen and detonating it underwater. I also thew spears at the balloons and hit them with steel wool.
I did not directly handle any of the balloons filled with gas, instead I safely filled them from the propane tank with a 10' hose. the hose had a valve that kept the propane in the balloon after I disconnected it from the tank.
The first time I filled a balloon I had no idea how big the fireball would be. I lit the underside of a balloon with a grill lighter. The radius of the fireball was 3 feet, and it consumed my arm up to my elbow. I got 2nd degree burns on the top all my fingers, and my arm that took two weeks to heal. My point is these balloons contain a deceptively large amount of propane, be careful.

Two different friends that let me study the propane torches they made from designs found on the internet. After experimenting independently, I developed the two designs into this hybrid.
WARNING: Propane torches are not toys, and must be treated with caution and respect. Flames can reach temperatures upwards of 2,000ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. Working with power tools poses risks of personal injury. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, and under constant adult supervision. Have fun, but always think ahead, and remember that any project you try is at YOUR OWN RISK.

A year after I made my charcoal foundry (http://bit.ly/PopCanMelting), a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal.
He said the burner plans he followed were the common "Ron Reil" design, which for some reason I had never heard of. He hadn't tested his foundry yet, so I got one of my brass ingots and a crucible, and we fired it up.
I was amazed that in just over 2 minutes, we'd completely melted the brass ingot, and there was no charcoal dust flying around, no mess inside the foundry, and we didn't have to stop and keep adding more fuel every 5 minutes. This rekindled my interest for backyard metalworking, and I decided right there that I needed to have a propane conversion, and a new foundry.
I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first.
After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house with a group of other boys who were interested in seeing some of my projects. Shad noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner, and I said I intended to but hadn't got around to it. To my surprise, he let me know he'd made a propane foundry himeself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year.
Shad was good enough to let me spend a couple hours at his house seeing his foundry in operation, then let me borrow his burner assembly to study it in my shop.
I noticed his assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it.
In experimenting, I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn.
I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work.
I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly!
My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.
I was going to build a new foundry, designed to last longer than sand and plaster, but when I realized the propane torch worked just fine in the mini metal foundry I made before, I decided there was no need. And considering so many people have already made the plaster foundry, this simple propane burner gives the option of switching the foundry between propane, or charcoal, with no modifications required.

***UPDATE INFO 7/13/15*** At the time I made this video I had never had a valve I couldn't get to reseat in 15 years of refilling these tanks (and I'd refilled a lot of them). But tonight I went out to fill about 15 old 1-pound tanks that someone had brought me and I actually ran into two bad relief valves that would just not seal. Both of them were a bit rusted up and both of them were bone dry with no pressure in them. If I could amend my tutorial I would say that yes, it is possible to have a valve that won't reseat. You could always just fill it a little bit, then work and check the valves to make sure they will reseal before you fill the small tank all the way.
***UPDATE 12-23-2015 I had another relief valve that wouldn't seal this evening. However, I found that I could put the tips of the bent nose hemostat forceps down on either side of the pin, grip the valve flats, and gently tighten the valve a little. Leak went away after that.

It can be over 700% more expensive to buy propane in the 1lb bottles than it is to refill them from a BBQ tank using a refill adapter. I cover the economics and then demonstrate how to FULLY refill the standard Coleman 1lb propane cylinders WITHOUT sticking them in the freezer first. This technique is very handy when you're a week into a camp and need to refill your small cylinder, but didn't pack your freezer with you.

Aloha fellow scientists! Have you ever seen anything so cool? So after watching NightHawkInLight's video I knew I had to do this. It was easy to do, all I needed was a TS8000 torch, and 10 feet of 7/8 tubing from the hardware store.

The torch is self-igniting, meaning it has an electric sparker built in. When the button is pressed halfway, the torch mixes a perfect combination of propane and air into the tube. When the button is fully pressed the torch sparks sending a flame flying through the tube.
I tried to color the flame with some boric acid, and it turned bright green. NightHawkInLight gave me the idea to try powered charcoal to shoot embers and orange flame, worked great!
Well this experiment was not explody enough for me, so I used the same concept to build a propane powered cannon. This is honestly the best gas cannon I've ever used, it is just so simple. You could probably shoot 20 golfballs a minute the length of a football field or farther. The canon shot golf balls over 600 feet in the air!!
Im sure you can do tons of other cool things with this concept, let my know if you want me to try something!

One important thing I forgot to mention in the video is the fit of the object in the barrel. If you completely plug the barrel the gas mixture does not enter the tube, because torch only 'passively' blows the mixture down the tube into the combustion chamber. All the projectiles i shot had some 'slack' in the barrel.

Propane is a three-carbon alkane with the molecular formula C3H8, normally a gas, but compressible to a transportable liquid. A by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining, it is commonly used as a fuel for engines, oxy-gas torches, barbecues, portable stoves, and residential central heating. Propane is one of a group of liquefied petroleum gases. The others include butane, propylene, butadiene, butylene, isobutylene and mixtures thereof.
Propane as HD-5 was originally intended for use as vehicle fuel. HD-5 is currently being used in all propane applications. Propane containing too much propylene is not suited for most vehicle fuels. HD-5 is a specification which establishes a maximum concentration of 5% propene in propane. Propane and other LP gas specifications are established in ASTM D-1835. All propane fuels include an odorant, almost always ethanethiol, so that people can easily smell the gas in case of a leak.
Propane was first identified as a volatile component in gasoline by Walter O. Snelling of the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1910. The volatility of these lighter hydrocarbons caused them to be known as "wild" because of the high vapor pressures of unrefined gasoline. On March 31, the New York Times reported on Snelling's work with liquefied gas and that "...a steel bottle will carry enough [gas] to light an ordinary home for three weeks."

Devin Copeland (born June 4, 1970), better known by his stage name, Devin the Dude, is a Houston hip hop rapper. He is best known for his unique rapping style, his long career signed to Rap-A-Lot Records, and his 2002 song, "Lacville '79".
Devin Lynn Northcutt was born in St. Petersburg, Florida on June 4, 1970 and moved to Tennessee while in the fourth grade. He spent his childhood moving back and forth from New Boston and Houston, finally settling in Houston after graduating from high school. He smoked marijuana for the first time at a skating rink in seventh grade, which would later become a major influence on his music. As a teenager, Copeland became interested in breakdancing, joining several dance crews until he began rapping, which soon became his main interest. After graduating from high school, he met Rob Quest, a blind rapper and record producer, and the duo formed the group the Odd Squad.
Devin Copeland started out as a member of the Odd Squad (later known as the Coughee Brothaz), a group of rappers signed to Rap-A-Lot Records. The label is notable for being the home of hip-hop artists such as Geto Boys, Scarface, and Too Much Trouble. Copeland moved on to become part of Scarface's Facemob before going solo in 1998. Copeland has released seven solo albums: The Dude (1998), Just Tryin' ta Live (2002), To tha X-Treme (2004), Waitin' to Inhale (2007), Landing Gear (2008), Suite 420 (2010), and Gotta Be Me (2010). You could always just fill it a little bit, then work and check the valves to make sure they will reseal before you fill the small tank all the way. ***UPDATE 12-23-2015 I had another relief valve that wouldn't seal this evening. However, I found that I could put the tips of the bent nose hemostat forceps down on either side of the pin, grip the valve flats, and gently tighten the valve a little. Leak went away after that. ***Original Description Below*** It can be over 700% more expensive to buy propane in the 1lb bottles than it is to refill them from a BBQ tank using a refill adapter. I cover the economics and then demonstrate how to FULLY refill the standard Coleman 1lb propane cylinders WITHOUT sticking them in the freezer first. This technique is very handy when you're a week into a camp and need to refill your small cylinder, but didn't pack your freezer with you. -

Aloha fellow scientists! Have you ever seen anything so cool? So after watching NightHawkInLight's video I knew I had to do this. It was easy to do, all I needed was a TS8000 torch, and 10 feet of 7/8 tubing from the hardware store. Inspiration for this video NightHawkInLights video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXoqw-_uDx4 The torch is self-igniting, meaning it has an electric sparker built in. When the button is pressed halfway, the torch mixes a perfect combination of propane and air into the tube. When the button is fully pressed the torch sparks sending a flame flying through the tube. I tried to color the flame with some boric acid, and it turned bright green. NightHawkInLight gave me the idea to try powered charcoal to shoot embers and orange flame, worked great! Well this experiment was not explody enough for me, so I used the same concept to build a propane powered cannon. This is honestly the best gas cannon I've ever used, it is just so simple. You could probably shoot 20 golfballs a minute the length of a football field or farther. The canon shot golf balls over 600 feet in the air!! Im sure you can do tons of other cool things with this concept, let my know if you want me to try something! I thought it would be fun to film propane balloons exploding in slow motion, and I tried popping them a bunch of different ways. I took some user suggestions like flying a drone with a sparkler attached into a balloon, and filling a balloon with a explosive mixture of propane and oxygen and detonating it underwater. I also thew spears at the balloons and hit them with steel wool. ***UPDATE INFO 7/13/15*** At the time I made this video I had never had a valve I couldn't get to reseat in 15 years of refilling these tanks (and I'd refilled a lot of them). But tonight I went out to fill about 15 old 1-pound tanks that someone had brought me and I actually ran into two bad relief valves that would just not seal. Both of them were a bit rusted up and both of them were bone dry with no pressure in them. If I could amend my tutorial I would say that yes, it is possible to have a valve that won't reseat. I thought it would be fun to film propane balloons exploding in slow motion, and I tried popping them a bunch of different ways. The first time I filled a balloon I had no idea how big the fireball would be. I lit the underside of a balloon with a grill lighter. The radius of the fireball was 3 feet, and it consumed my arm up to my elbow. I got 2nd degree burns on the top all my fingers, and my arm that took two weeks to heal. My point is these balloons contain a deceptively large amount of propane, be careful.

I took some user suggestions like flying a drone with a sparkler attached into a balloon, and filling a balloon with a explosive mixture of propane and oxygen and detonating it underwater. I also thew spears at the balloons and hit them with steel wool.
I did not directly handle any of the balloons filled with gas, instead I safely filled them from the propane tank with a 10' hose. the hose had a valve that kept the propane in the balloon after I disconnected it from the tank.
The first time I filled a balloon I had no idea how big the fireball would be. I lit the underside of a balloon with a grill lighter. The radius of the fireball was 3 feet, and it consumed my arm up to my elbow. I got 2nd degree burns on the top all my fingers, and my arm that took two weeks to heal. My point is these balloons contain a deceptively large amount of propane, be careful.

A year after I made my charcoal foundry (http://bit.ly/PopCanMelting), a friend named Chris came by to visit, and to show me a foundry he'd made out of a propane tank, and refractory cement. His was more expensive to construct, but was made to last longer, and he powered it with propane instead of charcoal.
He said the burner plans he followed were the common "Ron Reil" design, which for some reason I had never heard of. He hadn't tested his foundry yet, so I got one of my brass ingots and a crucible, and we fired it up.
I was amazed that in just over 2 minutes, we'd completely melted the brass ingot, and there was no charcoal dust flying around, no mess inside the foundry, and we didn't have to stop and keep adding more fuel every 5 minutes. This rekindled my interest for backyard metalworking, and I decided right there that I needed to have a propane conversion, and a new foundry.
I bought the plumbing parts from Home Depot with intentions to build the torch, but they just sat on my worktable for months as I worked on developing other projects first.
After a considerable amount of time, a young man named Shadrick came to my house with a group of other boys who were interested in seeing some of my projects. Shad noticed the plumbing parts on my table and asked if I was making a propane burner, and I said I intended to but hadn't got around to it. To my surprise, he let me know he'd made a propane foundry himeself and had been using it to forge steel, melt aluminum, and make knives for over a year.
Shad was good enough to let me spend a couple hours at his house seeing his foundry in operation, then let me borrow his burner assembly to study it in my shop.
I noticed his assembly was completely different from the one Chris had, and since I really didn't have much idea of how propane burners worked at all, I was interested in reverse engineering the science behind it.
In experimenting, I realized that the purpose of the burner was to mix certain amounts of fuel and air to achieve the hottest temperature possible, and the cleanest burn.
I played with different lengths of tubing, and stumbled on the realization that by controlling the air-flow through the intake port, I could adjust the flame completely, and use any length of pipe I wanted. I also noticed that without a nozzle on the end, the burner wouldn't work.
I quickly developed some prototypes for an air regulator design I made from the lid of a tuna can, and it worked perfectly!
My final design was a hybrid of the two systems, with most of the plumbing parts based around the Ron Reil assembly, and the rest based on the connections I saw on Shad's system.
I was going to build a new foundry, designed to last longer than sand and plaster, but when I realized the propane torch worked just fine in the mini metal foundry I made before, I decided there was no need. And considering so many people have already made the plaster foundry, this simple propane burner gives the option of switching the foundry between propane, or charcoal, with no modifications required.

But tonight I went out to fill about 15 old 1-pound tanks that someone had brought me and I actually ran into two bad relief valves that would just not seal. Both of them were a bit rusted up and both of them were bone dry with no pressure in them. If I could amend my tutorial I would say that yes, it is possible to have a valve that won't reseat. You could always just fill it a little bit, then work and check the valves to make sure they will reseal before you fill the small tank all the way.
***UPDATE 12-23-2015 I had another relief valve that wouldn't seal this evening. However, I found that I could put the tips of the bent nose hemostat forceps down on either side of the pin, grip the valve flats, and gently tighten the valve a little. Leak went away after that.

It can be over 700% more expensive to buy propane in the 1lb bottles than it is to refill them from a BBQ tank using a refill adapter. I cover the economics and then demonstrate how to FULLY refill the standard Coleman 1lb propane cylinders WITHOUT sticking them in the freezer first. This technique is very handy when you're a week into a camp and need to refill your small cylinder, but didn't pack your freezer with you.

Aloha fellow scientists! Have you ever seen anything so cool? So after watching NightHawkInLight's video I knew I had to do this. It was easy to do, all I needed was a TS8000 torch, and 10 feet of 7/8 tubing from the hardware store.

The torch is self-igniting, meaning it has an electric sparker built in. When the button is pressed halfway, the torch mixes a perfect combination of propane and air into the tube. When the button is fully pressed the torch sparks sending a flame flying through the tube.
I tried to color the flame with some boric acid, and it turned bright green. NightHawkInLight gave me the idea to try powered charcoal to shoot embers and orange flame, worked great!
Well this experiment was not explody enough for me, so I used the same concept to build a propane powered cannon. This is honestly the best gas cannon I've ever used, it is just so simple. You could probably shoot 20 golfballs a minute the length of a football field or farther. The canon shot golf balls over 600 feet in the air!!
Im sure you can do tons of other cool things with this concept, let my know if you want me to try something!

One important thing I forgot to mention in the video is the fit of the object in the barrel. If you completely plug the barrel the gas mixture does not enter the tube, because torch only 'passively' blows the mixture down the tube into the combustion chamber. All the projectiles i shot had some 'slack' in the barrel.
