“Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra”
Costumes by Christian Lacroix
If Emeralds is about 19th century “Romantic Paris”, Rubies brings us nearer to jazzy America in the Thirties, thanks to Igor Stravinsky‘s extremely energetic and syncopated “Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra”. Here the costumes are short, “Ballet-on-Broadway” looking skirts for the girls. The choreography attempts to display all the different twists in the music, so one sees angular shapes, high extensions, jutting hips, flexed feet and more. Due to its “wow factor” Rubies has been the most successful of the three sections and is often performed independently of the other two. Dancers usually compare performing in Rubies to running a marathon, given the required stamina. The ballet has a leading couple, a female soloist and a corps of eight women and four men. After the ensemble opening, we see a solo for a tall, Balanchine-type ballerina, a very sparky Pas de Deux for the leading couple and a real marathon of a finale, where the dancers prance and chase each other, like “racing horses”, full of fun, energy and intensity.

George Balanchine (January 22, 1904 April 30, 1983), born Giorgi Balanchivadze (Georgian: გიორგი მელიტონის ძე ბალანჩივაძე) in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to Georgian father and Russian mother, was one of the 20th century's foremost choreographers, a pioneer of ballet in the United States, co-founder and balletmaster of New York City Ballet: his work created modern ballet, based on his deep knowledge of classical forms and techniques. He was a choreographer known for his musicality; he did not illustrate music but expressed it in dance and worked extensively with Igor Stravinsky, his contemporary. Balanchine's father, noted Georgian composer Meliton Balanchivadze (1862-1937), was one of the founders of the Georgian Opera. George's brother, Andria Balanchivadze (1906-1992), became a well-known Georgian composer.

First Solo Variation from Emeralds. First Act of George Balanchine's Jewels
Paris Opera Ballet
Choreography by George Balanchine
Music by Gabriel Fauré
Costumes by Christian Lacroix
This is Balanchine’s ode to Romantic ballets, hinted at not only in the long, Romantic-style, tutus, but also in the choreography: fluid, airy and delicate, full of floating bourrées, Giselle-like balances and sinuous steps. It evokes 19th century Paris and French ballerinas of that era. With a small corps de ballet of ten women, three soloists and two leading couples, the piece starts with an opening Pas de Deux from the first couple, two solo variations for the ballerinas, a vivid Pas de Trois (one of the highlights of Emeralds), a Pas de Deux for the second leading couple and an ensemble finale.

Writing about Square Dance, Balanchine explained, "Ballet and other forms of dance of course can be traced back to folk dance. I have always liked watching American folk dances, especially in my trips to the West, and it occurred to me that it would be possible to combine these two different types of dance, the folk and the classic, in one work. To show how close the two really are, we chose old music also based on ancient dances. The spirit and nerve required for superb dancing are close to what we always want in ballet performances, which is one way perhaps of explaining why so many American dancers are so gifted. The invention, its superb preparation for risks, and its high spirits are some of the things I was trying to show in this ballet."

Orpheus is a thirty-minute ballet created by choreographer George Balanchine in collaboration with composer Igor Stravinsky in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by the Ballet Society, which Balanchine founded together with Lincoln Kirstein and of which he was ballet master. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi.
The original cast consisted of 30 dancers: Orpheus; Eurydice; the Dark Angel of Death; Apollo; the leader of the Furies; the leader of the Bacchantes; eight women Bacchantes; nine women in various roles (Friends to Orpheus, Furies, Pluto, Satyr, and Nature Spirits); and seven men as Lost Souls.
The action was divided into three scenes and 12 dance episodes: (Scene One) Orphee; l'Ange de la mort et sa danse; Interlude; (Scene Two) Pas des furies; Air de danse; Interlude; Air de danse conclusion; Pas d'action; (Scene Three) Apostheose d'Orphee.
The premiere took place on April 28, 1948, at City Center of Music and Drama, New York, and directly resulted in City Center's chairman, Morton Baum, inviting Balanchine and Kirstein to establish a resident company. The new company was named (or Ballet Society renamed) New York City Ballet and Balanchine remained its ballet master until his death.
The program for City Ballet's first performance at City Center, conducted by Igor Stravinsky, consisted of Orpheus, Concerto Barocco and Symphony in C on October 11, 1948; and Noguchi's rendition of Orpheus' lyre was adopted as and remains City Ballet's official symbol.

George Balanchine choreographed his acclaimed Harlequinade in the spirit of Marius Petipa, in whose Les Millions d’Harlequinade he danced as a student. On September 20 and 21, dancers from New York City Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet and PNB education programs manager and dance scholar Doug Fullington joined Works & Process for an exploration of Balanchine’s Harlequinade, a masterful two-act ballet in the commedia dell’arte style. Excerpts were performed prior to the October New York City Ballet performances.

Since 1984, New Yorkers have been able to see, hear, and meet the most acclaimed artists in the world, in an intimate setting unlike any other. Works & Process, the performing arts series at the Guggenheim, has championed new works, offered audiences unprecedented access to our generation's leading creators and performers, and hosted post-show receptions for the audiences and artists to continue the discussion.
Each performance uniquely combines artistic creation and stimulating conversation and takes place in the Guggenheim's intimate Frank Lloyd Wright-designed 285-seat Peter B. Lewis Theater. Described by The New York Times as "an exceptional opportunity to understand something of the creative process," Works & Process is produced by founder Mary Sharp Cronson.

Suzanne Farrell, one of choreographer George Balanchine's most celebrated muses and a legendary figure in the ballet world, discussed the role of technique, what she learned from Balanchine about organizing the body and how to encourage young dancers to reach beyond technique as performers. Thirty years after she first appeared at the Pillow in two pas de deux with Peter Martins, this talk was conducted on the occasion of her company's Pillow debut.
Excerpt from PillowTalk: Suzanne Farrell, recorded July 8, 2006. Moderated by Scholar-in-Residence Maura Keefe.
PillowTalks feature world-renowned choreographers, dancers, authors, filmmakers, historians, and critics in live hour-long moderated discussions of the cultural forces shaping the field of dance. Curated by Jacob's Pillow Director of Preservation Norton Owen and moderated by Jacob's Pillow Scholars-in-Residence, PillowTalks use dance as a prism to explore the world at large.

Suzanne Farrell Bio
One of George Balanchine's most celebrated muses and a legendary figure in the ballet world, Suzanne Farrell serves as Artistic Director of her own company, The Suzanne Farrell Ballet. She is also a repetiteur for The George Balanchine Trust, the independent organization founded after the choreographer's death by the heirs to his ballets to oversee their worldwide licensing and production. Since 1988 she has staged Balanchine's works for such companies as the Berlin Opera Ballet, the Vienna State Opera Ballet, the Royal Danish Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, and the Bolshoi Ballet, as well as American companies, including those in Boston, Miami, Seattle, Cincinnati, Fort Worth, and New York. She was born in Cincinnati, and she received her early training at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.
Ms. Farrell joined Balanchine's New York City Ballet in the fall of 1961 after a year as a Ford Foundation scholarship student at the School of American Ballet. Her unique combination of musical, physical, and dramatic gifts quickly ignited Balanchine's imagination. By the mid 1960s, she was not only Balanchine's most prominent ballerina, she was a symbol of the era, and remains so to this day. As a performer she restated and re-scaled such Balanchine masterpieces as Apollo, Concerto Barocco, and Symphony in C. Balanchine went on to invent new masterworks for her — Diamonds, for example, and Chaconne and Mozartiana, in which the limits of ballerina technique were expanded to a degree not seen before or since. By the time she retired from the stage in 1989, Ms. Farrell had achieved a career that is without precedent or parallel in the history of ballet.
During her 28 years on the stage, she danced a repertory of more than one hundred ballets, nearly a third of which were composed expressly for her by Balanchine and other choreographers, including Jerome Robbins and Maurice Béjart. Her numerous performances with Balanchine's company (more than two thousand), her world tours, and her appearances in television and movies have made her one of the most recognizable and highly esteemed artists of her generation. She is also the recipient of numerous artistic and academic accolades. Since the fall of 2000, Ms. Farrell has been a full-time professor in the dance department at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.
In addition to her work for the Balanchine Trust, she is active in a variety of cultural and philanthropic organizations such as the New York State Council on the Arts, the Arthritis Foundation, the Professional Children's School, and the Princess Grace Foundation. Summit Books published her autobiography, Holding On to the Air in 1990 and Suzanne Farrell - Elusive Muse (directed by Anne Belle and Deborah Dickson) was an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Film in 1997.

THE DANCE ENTHUSIAST goes behind the scenes with the hottest dance companies in New York City to share their stories. Here we meet Allegra Kent former Principal Ballerina and a favorite of George Balanchine at the New York City Ballet.
Thanks to Making Books Sing, a theater company and arts education non-profit organization, "Ballerina Swan", a children's book by Kent, has the chance to be turned into a ballet.
Dance Up Close, part of Engaging Dance Audiences, administered by Dance/USA and made possible with generous funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, is designed to bring online audiences closer to our New York dance community.
Through short HD Videos combining rehearsal footage with interviews, audiences are offered an uncommon entry point to the behind the scenes of movement creation. They are able to see dancers and choreographers, intimately, as people they can relate to - not only abstract figures onstage.
