All societies mark off and defend key conceptual boundaries, drawing a line between behavior that is considered to be private or public, sacred or profane, masculine or feminine, for example. However, many contemporary artists, rather then focus on the sublime, delight in smudging the line between such supposedly sacrosanct categories; pollution and corruption–not beauty–become both their method and subject. This talk will focus on artistic practice that intentionally destabilizes and contaminates normative expectations, thereby critiquing their legitimacy and challenging their authority. Examples will be drawn from England and America, with a special focus on South African artists: heirs to colonial as well as apartheid legacies of comprehensive systems of containment and control, their symbolic transgressions of taboos, and their emphasis on the abject, critique the status quo and envision novel realities.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Take in the many splendors of the nation’s capital when you arrive at Washington, D.C.
Your Washington, D.C. tour should start at the National Mall, where you’ll find monuments, memorials, and government buildings instead of tons of shopping. If you’d like to get around town easily but don’t want to rent a car, the Capital Bikeshare program will let you cruise around the city without wasting gas or getting stuck in traffic.
Check out the Watergate Hotel and Kennedy Center when you stop at Foggy Bottom, then move on to Georgetown, the oldest district in D.C. It’s filled with 18th-century buildings and, of course, the university itself. After a stop at the National Cathedral, make your way to the Smithsonian National Zoo, the perfect stop for the young and the young at heart.
If you’re feeling the need to channel your inner 007, go to the International Spy Museum, and learn about the covert operations and intelligence agencies that have shaped the world we live in. Of course, you can’t enjoy any Washington, D.C., tourism without admiring the White House, so make sure that’s on your list too.
Visit our Washington, D.C., travel guide page for more information or to plan your next vacation!

http://www.tc.columbia.edu/resiliencecenter/
Launched on November 5, 2015 the Teachers College Resilience Center for Veterans & Families pairs groundbreaking research on human emotional resilience with clinical training of therapists to assist veterans and their families as they transition back to civilian life.
Led by Dr. George Bonanno, one of the world’s foremost authorities on human emotional resilience and recovery from trauma and loss, the TC Resilience Center studies the experiences, strengths and difficulties of veterans and their families, while researching and assessing intervention programs that can best enhance their health and well-being.
Clinical Services
Through TC's nationally regarded Dean Hope Center for Educational & Psychological Services, which offers training programs in clinical and counseling psychology, the TC Resilience Center recruits and trains its top students to counsel veterans and their families. The Dean Hope Center is led by clinical psychologist Dr.Dinelia Rosa, President of the New York State Psychological Association and an expert in training counselors and psychologists to work effectively with diverse populations.
Research
The TC Resilience Center also supports research conducted by TC doctoral students whose own military experiences have shaped their scholarly interest in resilience, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the implications of both for the military and veteran communities.
As a global leader in health, education and psychology, Teachers College is uniquely equipped to marshal resources and expertise to develop and deliver effective, evidence-based treatments and services that meet the psychological needs of returning veterans and their families.
Veteran Initiatives at Teachers College
Teachers College is part of Columbia University, which historically and currently enrolls the largest number of veterans among Ivy League institutions. Since 2005, TC and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point have jointly operated the Eisenhower Leader Development Program (ELDP), a master’s degree program in organizational psychology for West Point officers, praised for its track record in enhancing strategic-level thinking and decision-making skills. ELDP co-founder and TC Psychology and Education Professor Warner Burke currently serves on a Blue Ribbon advisory panel charged with assessing and improving the hospital care and other health-related services provided by the Veterans Administration.
In addition, Dr. Bonanno and the Resilience Center are ideally positioned to collaborate with other national organizations and agencies on expanding the Center’s impact. Within Teachers College, the Center will serve as a hub for other TC faculty who are currently working on veterans-related research, from studying the health benefits of strength training for returning soldiers, to developing new treatments for veterans who have sustained traumatic brain injuries.

This Thursday, September 24th, the day before the United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York City decides on new sustainable development goals, TC will host “Research and Teaching in International Education and Development: New Paradigms and Perspectives in the post-2015 Era,” a conference discussion on how the new global development agenda may affect both research and teaching in international education and development.
“The new sustainable development goals will address not only primary school but lifelong learning and skills development,” said Gita Steiner-Khamsi, Professor of Comparative and International Education, who will speak at the event. “There will be an emphasis on climate change, social justice and human rights, and there will be new partners, including China and all development nations, and businesses. We’ll be looking at the implications of the new aid architecture.”
Together with TC, the event’s co-organizers are the Network for International Policies and Cooperation in Education and Training (NORRAG), and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (GIIDS), both located in Geneva, Switzerland. NYU’s Steinhardt School of Education and the Open Society Foundations are co-sponsors.
Other speakers are Switzerland’s Michael Gerber, Ambassador and Special Envoy for Global Sustainable Development; Dana Burde (Ph.D. ’01), Associate Professor and Director, International Education Program, NYU; Peliwe Lolwana, Director of the Center for Research Education and Labor at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg, South Africa; Noah Sobe (M.A. '00), Vice President of the Comparative and International Education Society; and Aleesha Taylor (Ed.D. '01), Deputy Director of Open Society Foundation New York’s Education Support Program.
The discussion will be moderated by Joost Monks, NORRAG Director, and audience debate will be introduced by Gilles Carbonnier, Professor of Development & Economics at GIIDS.

Florence Geffen Scholar Tammy Yi overcame adversity to attend TC and continue her studies as a music educator. Now, she's inspiring today's young violinists.
If creativity is adjusting and persisting in the face of the unexpected, Music & Music Education doctoral student Tammy Yi is ideally suited to “motivate and educate teachers to teach children to be creative people.” Yi’s parents left Korea for the United States but struggled in low-paying jobs. Both their daughters were musical, but Yi eventually gave up violin lessons so her sister could pursue a concert pianist’s career. She taught herself guitar and other instruments and dreamed of leading the first Asian-American punk band.
After 9/11, Yi joined the Navy, supported her parents and earned a bachelor’s degree, studying music education and violin. “I had lost so many years and had always struggled with traditional violin playing, but I was inspired to give children the self-confidence and creative freedom I’d never had.” Emphasizing the teamwork and discipline she’d learned in the Navy, Yi created an award-winning children’s orchestra and conducted it at venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.
At TC, backed by an Irene Geffen Fund scholarship and mentored by Professor Lori Custodero, Yi has created a violin program at the Teachers College Community School supported by TC Trustee Emerita Enid (“Dinny”) Morse and her daughter, Trustee Leslie Nelson.
“Music teaches children about possibility,” Yi says. TC and the Geffen Scholarship have taught her about that, too.

On Wednesday, September 2, she will be coming to Teachers College, Columbia University, to talk about the President's Committee, what advising the White House on cultural policy entails, and how she realized the importance of relationship-building to get the job done and make the Committee more active and visible than under any previous administration.

Professor Elana Shohamy (Tel Aviv University) presents a lecture regarding "Critical issues of assessment of multi-bilingual populations" at Teachers College, Columbia University on April 2nd, 2015.
Dr. Elana Shohamy’s work challenges current monolingual assessments of bi- and multi-lingual users, proposing instead prototypes of multilingual assessment based on the full language repertoire.
The paper challenges the practice of language tests where bi- and multi-lingual users are expected to demonstrate language proficiency on monolingual tests and are compared to their monolingual counterparts, which in effect, penalizes their bilingual competence. It argues that these tests are based on outdated views of language as a standard and finite system, which do not allow other languages to ‘smuggle in’ as they suppress students’ multiple language competencies. These views, which reflect assimilative nation state ideologies, are in stark contrast to the current understanding of multilingual and multimodal competences where various languages interact with one another in creative ways. These tests are problematic especially for immigrant students who are in the process of acquiring new languages while continuing to use their home languages. Data on the use of bi-multilingual tests for assessing academic knowledge pointing to the advantages for bilingual test takers will be shared along with multilingual assessment prototypes to demonstrate their superior construct validity due to their basis on the full language repertoire that highlights the
advantages of bilingualism rather than its problems.
Dr. Elana Shohamy is a professor of Language Education at the School of Education, Tel Aviv University where she researches topics of multilingualism within the contexts of critical framework, language rights and co-existence.

Scott Freeman presents "Revisions of Soil: Generations of applied anthropology in Haiti" at the Conference on Applying Anthropology at Teachers College, Columbia University on February 26, 2015.
Haiti's environment has long been the target of development interventions. Beginning in the 1950s, such plans have often been facilitated by 'applied anthropology'. Working in an instrumental capacity with the UN or USAID, a cadre of applied anthropologists and social scientists have in fact produced the majority of environmental research on Haiti. Such research has been called on to conceptualize and evaluate the potential of soil conservation and reforestation programs. But contemporary applied research arguably plays a different role in understanding the scope of so-called social problems. Unlike early applied research, contemporary anthropology must critically engage with the knowledge produced by NGOs and development funding agencies, and therefore with the very research produced by previous applied anthropological efforts. This presentation illustrates and analyzes the way in which multiple anthropologies come into contact, and how a contemporary applied venture must critically analyze a broad spectrum of development actors, both past and present.

Professor Brian Boyd presents “Community anthropology in the Palestinian Territories: An archaeological perspective on settler colonialism” at the Conference on Applying Anthropology at Teachers College, Columbia University on February 26, 2015.
This paper discusses a recent community anthropology/archaeology initiative in a small town in the West Bank. The landscapes of the area have been shaped, mapped, drawn and redrawn over the past 150 years by Ottoman rule, British colonial administration, the Zionist movement, the Palestinian Authority, and successive Israeli governments. A number of archaeological sites with deep historical significance have been drawn into these processes, some by geographical happenstance, others through ideological and political imperatives. How were, and are, these landscapes, sites and histories perceived by different interest groups, and how can a community-based anthropology address these often deeply-conflicting perceptions?

Evaluating Teacher Education and Teachers Using Student Assessments: A Deliberate and Destructive misunderstanding of Teachers’ Effects.
About the Lecture:
This lecture will challenge federal and state policies that require evaluation of teacher education programs and classroom teachers by means of students’ scores on standardized tests. Despite the logic of this idea, and the widespread belief that this is a reasonable requirement, it is a highly inappropriate measure for evaluating teacher competency. The problem arises from a paradox, namely, that teachers do affect students’ lives, sometimes quite dramatically, but on the standardized tests that are used to evaluate them and the programs in which they were educated, teachers’ effects are minimal and temporary. A sensible alternative to the use of student test scores to evaluate teachers and the teacher education programs from which they came is offered.
David C. Berliner is Regents’ Professor Emeritus of Education at Arizona State University. He has taught at the University of Arizona, University of Massachusetts, Teachers College and Stanford University, as well as universities in Australia, Canada, The Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland.
Dr. Berliner is a member of the National Academy of Education (NEA), the International Education Academy (IEA), a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and a past president of both the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the Division of Educational Psychology of the American Psychological Association (APA). He is the recipient of awards for distinguished contributions from APA, AERA, and the National Education Association (NEA).
Dr. Berliner is co-author (with B. J. Biddle) of the best seller The Manufactured Crisis , co-author (with Ursula Casanova) of Putting Research to Work , and co-author (with N. L. Gage) of six editions of the textbook Educational Psychology . He is co-editor of the first Handbook of Educational Psychology and the books Talks to Teachers , and Perspectives on Instructional Time . His book Collateral Damage (with Sharon Nichols) is about the corruption of professional educators through high-stakes testing. His latest book, published by Teachers College Press, is 50 Myths and Lies that Threaten America's Public Schools. Professor Berliner has also authored more than 200 published articles, technical reports, and book chapters.
About the Series:
The Landscape for Preparing Teacher Educators: Whose Knowledge? What Visions?
This colloquium series grows out of our essential questions: What should be the curriculum of doctoral level work to prepare teacher educator-scholars? What research is needed to guide this work?
In the colloquium series we seek to understand the rapidly shifting landscape of university-based teacher education. Our specific goals and purposes include:
Analyzing the possible future of university-based teacher education;
Learning the criticisms of university-based teacher education;
Pondering the worth of university-based teacher education and analyzing the research that helps us evaluate it;
Exploring the differences between reactive change and transformative change in teacher education and analyzing what transformative leadership in teacher education requires.
