Iranians have both praised and questioned their president for writing to President George W. Bush, proposing "new solutions" to their long-running quarrel in the first letter from an Iranian head of state to a U.S. leader in 27 years.
Moderate and conservative papers described the letter Tuesday as "an initiative in global diplomacy" and "dialogue under the shadow of war."
"If this letter clarifies the remaining issues between the two countries it can help restarting relations between the two," said Mahmoud Shafizadeh, a computer technician.
The Iranian government has long avoided direct contact with the United States, with whom it has had no diplomatic relations since 1979.
Western analysts saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad''s letter, announced on Monday, as a shrewd move to blunt the U.S. drive for a U.N. Security Council resolution against Iran''s nuclear programme.
On Tuesday Ahmadinejad was seen leaving Tehran for a six-day visit to Indonesia, where he is expected to discuss the nuclear issue with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and attend a conference of mostly Muslim countries.
In his letter, Ahmadinejad declared that liberalism and democracy had failed, and criticised the United States over a host of issues ranging from the invasion of Iraq to its support for Israel.
Sent as western nations confront suspicions over Iran''s nuclear programme, it made only an oblique reference to Iran''s intentions, asking why "any
technological and scientific achievement reached in the Middle East region is translated into and portrayed as a threat to the Zionist regime."
Otherwise, it lambasted Bush for his handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, accused the media of spreading lies about the Iraq war, and said that people around the world are moving closer to faith in God.
Even though the letter hardly touched on nuclear issues, officials said it appeared timed to coincide with a push by the United States, Britain, France and Germany for a U.N. Security Council vote to restrain the Islamic regime''s nuclear ambitions.
Both China and Russia are opposed to levelling sanctions against Iran and the letter could provide them support.

The Colbert Report
The Colbert Report (/koʊlˈbɛr rəˈpɔːr/) is an American late-night talk and news satire television program hosted by Stephen Colbert that aired on Comedy Central from October 17, 2005 to December 18, 2014 for 1,447 episodes. The show focused on a fictional anchorman character named Stephen Colbert, played by his real-life namesake. The character, described by Colbert as a "well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot", is a caricature of televised political pundits. Furthermore, the show satirized conservative personality-driven political talk programs, particularly Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor. 60 Minutes
60 Minutes is an American newsmagazine television program broadcast on the CBS television network. Debuting in 1968, the program was created by Don Hewitt, who chose to set it apart from other news programs by using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. In 2002, 60 Minutes was ranked #6 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time and in 2013, it was ranked #24 on TV Guide's 60 Best Series of All Time.The New York Times has called it "one of the most esteemed news magazines on American television".
Broadcast history
Early years
The program employed a magazine format, similar to that of the Canadian program W5, which premiered two years earlier. It pioneered many of the most important investigative journalism procedures and techniques, including re-editing interviews, hidden cameras, and "gotcha journalism" visits to the home or office of an investigative subject. Similar programs sprang up in Australia and Canada during the 1970s, as well as on local television news.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Persian: محمود احمدینژاد, Mahmūd Ahmadinezhād [mæhmuːd(-e) æhmædiːneʒɒːd], born 28 October 1956) is an Iranian politician who was the sixth President of Iran from 2005 to 2013. He was also the main political leader of the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran, a coalition of conservative political groups in the country.
An engineer and teacher from a poor background, Ahmadinejad joined the Office for Strengthening Unity after the Iranian Revolution. Appointed a provincial governor, he was removed after the election of President Mohammad Khatami and returned to teaching. Tehran's council elected him mayor in 2003. He took a religious hard line, reversing reforms of previous moderate mayors. His 2005 presidential campaign, supported by the Alliance of Builders of Islamic Iran, garnered 62% of the runoff election votes, and he became President on 3 August 2005.
During his presidency, Ahmadinejad was viewed as a controversial figure within Iran, as well as internationally. He has been criticized domestically for his economic policies and alleged disregard for human rights. Internationally, he is criticized for his hostility towards some countries, most notably Saudi Arabia, Israel, the United Kingdom, and the United States and other Western and Arab nations. In 2007, Ahmadinejad introduced a gas rationing plan to reduce the country's fuel consumption, and cut the interest rates that private and public banking facilities could charge. He supports Iran's nuclear program. His election to a second term in 2009 was widely disputed and caused widespread protests domestically and drew significant international criticism.

The Iranian government has long avoided direct contact with the United States, with whom it has had no diplomatic relations since 1979.
Western analysts saw President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad''s letter, announced on Monday, as a shrewd move to blunt the U.S. drive for a U.N. Security Council resolution against Iran''s nuclear programme.
On Tuesday Ahmadinejad was seen leaving Tehran for a six-day visit to Indonesia, where he is expected to discuss the nuclear issue with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and attend a conference of mostly Muslim countries.
In his letter, Ahmadinejad declared that liberalism and democracy had failed, and criticised the United States over a host of issues ranging from the invasion of Iraq to its support for Israel.
Sent as western nations confront suspicions over Iran''s nuclear programme, it made only an oblique reference to Iran''s intentions, asking why "any
technological and scientific achievement reached in the Middle East region is translated into and portrayed as a threat to the Zionist regime."
Otherwise, it lambasted Bush for his handling of the Sept. 11 attacks, accused the media of spreading lies about the Iraq war, and said that people around the world are moving closer to faith in God.
Even though the letter hardly touched on nuclear issues, officials said it appeared timed to coincide with a push by the United States, Britain, France and Germany for a U.N. Security Council vote to restrain the Islamic regime''s nuclear ambitions.
Both China and Russia are opposed to levelling sanctions against Iran and the letter could provide them support.

The Bolivian government declared a state of emergency over a plague of locusts infecting a wide agricultural area on Wednesday, according to BBC News ... President Evo Morales announced a contingency plan which includes an additional $700,000 for fumigation to begin right away. The authorities guess that close to 1,000 hectares of agricultural land were destroyed by the locusts and President Morales is set to visit the area on Friday....

In January there were 4 murders, with the current rate at 90 for February along with over $29 million in damages from the looting and two buses being set on fire....
