With the very intitiation of NAWAPA in North America, politically and economically, the land connection of the continents of America and Eurasia is placed on the agenda. The connection via the Bering Strait, a project that was first proposed in the middle of the 19th century, would lead highways and rail track through a tunnel underneath the icy ocean waters, and would include a gas pipeline, as well as power transmission and communications lines.
Construction of the Bering Strait Tunnel is an active agenda of many of the most important nations in that region.
One of the international specialists on planning and constructing infrastructure projects of this scale and kind, is Dr. Hal Cooper. Dr. Cooper has inspired and performed extensive feasibility studies on the rail and tunnel project for the Bering Strait, the rail connections within Alaska and Canada, as well as numerous other projects.
Dr. Sergei Cherkasov is a further international specialist for such projects. Cherkasov works at the State Geological Vernadsky Museum in Moscow, which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a leading expert on questions of raw materials in the scientific tradition of Vladimir Vernadsky and Dmitri Mendeleyev, and is active in several international working groups on surveying undiscovered mineral deposits.

Twice as long as the channel tunnel, it would be the most ambitious and expensive tunnelling project ever attempted. To build it, massive Tunnel Boring Machines would start on both sides of the strait - 64 miles apart - and meet in the middle. All this would have to be built in some of the most difficult conditions anywhere on the planet: permafrost regions, mountains and summer swamps, and an entire region known for frequent large magnitude earthquakes that put everything and everyone at constant risk.

A Bering Strait crossing is a hypothetical bridge or tunnel spanning the relatively narrow and shallow Bering Strait between the Chukotka Peninsula in Russia and the Seward Peninsula in the U.S. state of Alaska. The bridge or tunnel would provide a connection linking North America with Asia and Europe.
With the two Diomede Islands between the peninsulas, the Bering Strait could be spanned by three bridges. Two long bridges, each almost 40 kilometres (25 mi) long, would connect the mainland on each side to one island, and a third much shorter one between the two islands. However, the construction of a Bering Strait crossing would face exceptional political, engineering, and financial hurdles.

The Bering Strait (Russian: Берингов пролив, Beringov proliv, Yupik: Imakpik) is a strait connecting the Pacific and Arctic oceans between Russia and the US state of Alaska. Named after Vitus Bering, a Danish-born explorer in the service of the Russian Empire, it lies slightly south of the Arctic Circle at about 65° 40' N latitude, with the present US-Russia east-west boundary at 168° 58' 37" W.
The Strait has been the subject of scientific speculation that humans migrated from Asia to North America across a land bridge known as Beringia when lower ocean levels – perhaps a result of glaciers locking up vast amounts of water – exposed a wide stretch of the sea floor, both at the present strait and in the shallow sea north and south of it. This view of how Paleo-Indians entered America has been the dominant one for several decades and continues to be the most accepted one.
As of 2012, the Russian coast of the Bering Strait has been a closed military zone. Through organised trips and the use of special permits, it is possible for foreigners to visit. All arrivals must be through an airport or a cruise port, near the Bering Strait only at Anadyr or Provideniya. Unauthorized travelers who arrive on shore after crossing the strait, even those with visas, may be arrested, imprisoned briefly, fined, deported and banned from future visas.

60 Minutes is an American newsmagazine television program broadcast on the CBS television network. Debuting in 1968, the program was created by Don Hewitt, who chose to set it apart from other news programs by using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. In 2002, 60 Minutes was ranked #6 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time and in 2013, it was ranked #24 on TV Guide's 60 Best Series of All Time.The New York Times has called it "one of the most esteemed news magazines on American television".

Early years
The program employed a magazine format, similar to that of the Canadian program W5, which premiered two years earlier. It pioneered many of the most important investigative journalism procedures and techniques, including re-editing interviews, hidden cameras, and "gotcha journalism" visits to the home or office of an investigative subject. Similar programs sprang up in Australia and Canada during the 1970s, as well as on local television news.

The connection via the Bering Strait, a project that was first proposed in the middle of the 19th century, would lead highways and rail track through a tunnel underneath the icy ocean waters, and would include a gas pipeline, as well as power transmission and communications lines.
Construction of the Bering Strait Tunnel is an active agenda of many of the most important nations in that region.
One of the international specialists on planning and constructing infrastructure projects of this scale and kind, is Dr. Hal Cooper. Dr. Cooper has inspired and performed extensive feasibility studies on the rail and tunnel project for the Bering Strait, the rail connections within Alaska and Canada, as well as numerous other projects.
Dr. Sergei Cherkasov is a further international specialist for such projects. Cherkasov works at the State Geological Vernadsky Museum in Moscow, which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a leading expert on questions of raw materials in the scientific tradition of Vladimir Vernadsky and Dmitri Mendeleyev, and is active in several international working groups on surveying undiscovered mineral deposits.

Separated from the rest of the country, (the "lower 48"), by Canada, Alaska lies on the Arctic Circle. It is still the least densely populated state in the union and for a long time was home to the lowest population. America's final frontier is the size of California, Texas and Montana combined, making it huge in comparison to the rest of the states! Alaska is also home to the highest point in North America and all of the top ten highest mountains in the USA. Across the Bering Strait lies the country of Russia and the continent of Asia.
In 1867, the territory of Alaska was purchased from the Russians for $7.2 million (or about 2 cents an acre). We joined Seafari Fishing Charters for a half day fishing adventure off the coast of Rarotonga. As the boat cruises out to the deeper water drop off the view of the island is spectacular. Being a volcanic island we didn't have to go far as it drops off to deep water fairly close to shore.
It is a trolling set up as it was the large fish we were catching and it wasn't too long before we had our first bite. Everyone on board got to have a go bringing in the fish and a great thing to see was that even those who weren't very experienced with fishing had the chance to bring in a fish with the help and advice of the crew.

Early civilizations came from Russia into America by crossing the Bering Strait. They spread over North and South America forming cultural tribes. We refer to these original inhabitants of America as Native Americans.
Many, many, many years later, in the late 1400’s, explorers from Europe began journeying to the Americas. Europeans wanted to find an easy sailing route to Asia, so that they could trade spices and gold. in 1492, Christopher Columbus left Spain and sailed across the sea. When he hit land, he thought that he was in India. He called the people there “Indians”. He really had landed somewhere near the Bahamas. He called this land the New World. And so began the race against European countries to form colonies in America. Colonization is the process of establishing ownership of a land by creating colonies. Europeans wanted to colonize the New World in order to gain power and wealth. The first established colony in America was Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. It was settled by the English. in 1620, pilgrims sailed to America in the ship called the Mayflower. Pilgrims were Puritans, who were leaving England and seeking religious freedom. Soon, people from all over the world were seeking religious freedom in America. As these people settled in America, they took more and more land from Native Americans, who already lived there. And the late 1600’s these settlers began shipping slaves, from Africa, into America. For Europeans. America had now transitioned into a booming land with economic opportunities and freedoms. But settlers were still tied to English rule. And problems between the English and the colonists were growing. Soon American’s would begin their fight for freedom.

Environmental changes are opening the Arctic to increased activity and risk, which will impact the sole connection between the Pacific and Arctic Oceans – the Bering Strait. The U.S. and Russia, the two nations that border the strait, are largely unprepared to manage this increased activity and risk.
