Texas Longhorns athletics programs include the extramural and intramural sports teams of the University of Texas at Austin. These teams are referred to as the Texas Longhorns (or variously as Longhorns or 'Horns), taking their name from the Longhorn cattle that were an important part of the development of Texas, and are now the official "large animal" of the U.S. State of Texas. The University of Texas at Austin is the apparent flagship institution of the University of Texas System. The women's teams are sometimes called the Lady Longhorns, but generally both the men's and women's teams are referred to as the Longhorns, and the mascot is a Texas Longhorn steer named Bevo.
The Longhorn nickname appeared in Texas newspapers by 1900.
The University of Texas at Austin offers a wide variety of varsity and intramural sports programs. Due to the breadth of sports offered and the quality of the programs, Texas was selected as "America's Best Sports College" in a 2002 analysis performed by Sports Illustrated. Texas was also listed as the number one Collegiate Licensing Company client from 2005–2007 in regards to the amount of annual trademark royalties received from the sales of its fan merchandise.
Texas (i/ˈtɛksəs/) (Alibamu: Teksi ) is the second most populous and the second most extensive of the 50 United States, and the most extensive state of the 48 contiguous United States. The name, based on the Caddo word "Tejas" meaning "friends" or "allies", was applied by the Spanish to the Caddo themselves and to the region of their settlement in East Texas. Located in the South Central United States, Texas shares an international border with the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas to the south, and borders the US states of New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, Arkansas to the northeast, and Louisiana to the east. Texas has an area of 268,820 square miles (696,200 km2), and a growing population of 25.7 million residents.
During the Spanish colonial rule, the area was officially known as the Nuevo Reino de Filipinas: La Provincia de Texas. Antonio Margil de Jesús was known to be the first person to use the name in a letter to the Viceroy of Mexico in July 20, 1716. The name was not popularly used in daily speech but often appeared in legal documents until the end of the 1800s.
Verse 1:
It’s never gonna matter how tough ya feel
When you come to our house feel the crowd for real
With the tower orange lighin’ up the sky
Got the eyes of Texas watchin’ Longhorns fly
From the first to the fourth, every down’s a highlight
From the kick to the click, playin’ Texas Fight
From the fans in the stands to the players on the field
They don’t come any tougher than a Texas steer
We’ve come to play the game, protect the Texas reign
The title’s ours to claim; respect the Longhorn name
Chorus:
Can you feel the rage; I’m like a bull in a cage
Can you feel the rage; I’m like a bull in a cage
When I see orange
I come to life
I bring the best of me all the time
We won’t give in; just watch us rise
Can’t top that Texas Longhorn pride
Verse 2:
It doesn’t even matter how hard ya try
When you step with ya best up to the line
Flat on your back and ya wonder why
You’re starin’ at the stars in the Texas sky
And it doesn’t even matta how hard ya hit
From the start to the finish, Longhorns never quit
Rage in a cage when we step on the field
It don’t come any tougher than a Texas steer
And its not the same; I’m gonna change ya game
I’m gonna bring ya pain; you won’t forget my name
Chorus
Can you feel the rage? (x4)
