The Crash of 1929 The Great Depression
What Caused the Great Depression?
The world seems to be crashing on you and there is no place to run. This could be a description of what people felt during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (October 1929) which was also called as the Great Crash, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. This disaster was the start of the Great Depression which lasted for 12 years and ended at the onset of World War II in

The Depression happened after the stock market crash, but wasn't caused by the crash. John will teach you about how the depression started, what Herbert Hoover tried to do to fix it, and why those efforts failed.

Lyrics:
America was poor in the Great Depression
Millions without jobs in every profession
How will we eat was a daily question
What are all the lessons of the Great Depression?
Before the Great Depression, everything seemed great
It was the Roaring 1920’s, people liked to celebrate
A lotta food on their plate
And there was money to make
Factories were selling automobiles like hot cakes
Not to mention household appliances and radios
Flashy things, the economy was based on those
But the problem was that if times got tough
People weren’t gonna buy luxuries and all that stuff
And if you can’t buy what you usually do
Then the people who sell those things lose their jobs too
And then they can’t buy, it’s like a domino effect
So there were hidden changes
Though things seemed perfect
Chorus
Before the Great Depression
People thought they had luck
Thinking up ways they could make a quick buck
They’d buy a stock and sell it
For more than they bought it for
Sure to make a profit, long as the stock would soar
Seemed like such a great idea, everybody wanted in
Even with no money, they started borrowing
They’d ask the bank for a loan to the buy the stock
But could not pay it back when the stock would drop
Lots of people got in debt, had to sell all their shares
When some start selling, everyone gets scared
Millions rushed to sell their stocks in a mass
In the fall of ’29, the stock market crashed
Chorus
October 24, 1929, Black Thursday
One of the country’s darkest times
The market did crash, stocks began to tumble
Many Americans faced financial trouble
Their savings washed away in a matter of days
Left with debt with no money to pay
And our government—no, they didn’t want to panic
They knew there was a problem, but didn’t understand it
President Hoover tried to think of answers
He wanted to improve spending
What were the chances?
Businesses closed, banks dried up like wells
But Hoover thought things
Would take care of themselves
Chorus
Millions of people were poverty stricken
Living within wood shacks and poor conditions
These makeshift camps sprouted up all around
Hoovervilles they often called these towns
A couple years passed, it was 1932
The presidential race began to ask who
Could lift this country up from its depression
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, no question
Made the first and second New Deal
Government projects, building bridges of steel
With the Works Progress Administration
Then World War II brought jobs to the nation
Chorus

What Caused the Great Depression?
The world seems to be crashing on you and there is no place to run. This could be a description of what people felt during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 (October 1929) which was also called as the Great Crash, and the Stock Market Crash of 1929. This disaster was the start of the Great Depression which lasted for 12 years and ended at the onset of World War II in 1941.
Stock Market Crash of 1929
October of 1929 saw the collapse of the stock market which obliterated 40 percent of the value of common paper stock. This represented only a single happening as the tragedy continued and more and more people became penniless which rendered them helpless in providing for the needs of their families. Folks were pleading for money and food for their children as they aimlessly roamed the streets. Multitude of businesses was closed and banks were declining. By 1932, an average of one out of four Americans were unemployed. Despair and hopelessness were mirrored on the faces of the people for they saw no hope in sight as all kinds of bad news filled the air.

A new history of the Great Depression is emerging. One that acknowledges the role that government played in causing and prolonging it, and the constructive role that free enterprise could have played, if it were given the chance. In this video, UCLA economist Lee Ohanian explains how Herbert Hoover, widely misunderstood as a champion of the free market, actually turned what should have just been a recession into a depression due to his mistrust of the market.

The Great Depression - Episode 1: A Job At Ford's (HISTORY DOCUMENTARY)
Just before the advent of the Great Depression, Henry Ford controlled the most important company in the most important industry in the booming American economy. His offer of high wages in exchange for hard work attracted workers to Detroit, but it began to come apart when Ford hired a private police force to speed up production and spy on employees. After the depression hit in 1929, these workers faced a new, grim reality as unemployment skyrocketed.

We were the Reagan kids
Our heroes didn't work like our daddies did
They dazzled us with TV through sleepy lids
We followed hulking maniacs to prozac nation
"You can be anything, just get your education"
We were good Christian kids
Went to church on Sunday mornings like mama did
Teenage love made us feel guilty and so we hid
Under those overpasses on summer nights
We'd tear each other's clothes off
And get into fights
Then we roared right through our twenties
Never bargained for a crash
Watched our hollow dreams get buried
Under heaps of plastic trash
Broken promises to children leave indelible impressions
Welcome to the great depression
We were our father's sons
Playing war on weekend days with our plastic guns
Catching up with who we were through the reruns
"Eat your vitamins and say your prayers
You'll become doctors, lawyers and millionaires"
We were misguided girls
Tried to fuck our way through such a distorted world
Confusing love with sex and plastic with pearls
"Get what you can for yourself, leave the rest behind"
It's freedom forever 'til your card gets declined
And we roared right through our twenties
Never bargained for a crash
Watching hollow dreams get buried
Under heaps of plastic trash
Broken promises to children leave indelible impressions
Welcome to the great depression
Did he die for your sins?
Did he leave us for dead?
If you wanted us safe why would you fuck with our heads?
The factory's gone, the loans are foreclosed
But there's some places left that remind me of home
Just give me one place left that reminds me of home
The lifeboat is looking pretty full
If you find some room reach out and give me a pull
The way we learned to live is fading fast
I guess we never bargained for a crash
