Join us at Roosevelt House for a special evening exploring the argument — and contemporary meaning — of The Declaration of Independence, the foundational statement of America’s commitment to equality. Danielle Allen, author of Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality, discusses her acclaimed book in conversation with Nadine Strossen, former president of the American Civil Liberties Union, and professor of law at New York Law School.
Troubled by the fact that so few Americans actually know what the Declaration says, Allen, a professor of social science at the Institute for Advanced Study and a political philosopher widely known for her work on justice and citizenship, set out to explore the arguments of the Declaration, reading it with both adult night students and University of Chicago undergraduates. Keenly aware that the Declaration is riddled with contradictions – liberating some while subjugating slaves and Native Americans – Allen and her students nonetheless came to see that the Declaration makes a coherent and riveting argument about equality. They found a historical text that is an animating force that could and did transform the course of their everyday lives.
Junot Díaz praised Danielle Allen for laying “bare the Declaration’s history and significance, returning it to its true and rightful owners-you and me,” and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David M. Kennedy called the book an “uncommonly elegant, incisive, and often poetic primer on America’s cardinal text” that illuminates the “three great themes of the Declaration: equality, liberty, and the abiding power of language.”

Danielle Allen, Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and a professor in Harvard’s Government Department and Graduate School of Education, sat down with Deva Woodly, assistant professor of politics at The New School for Social Research (NSSR | http://www.newschool.edu/nssr), to discuss notions of liberty and equality in the contemporary American political landscape. Allen was invited to The New School (http://www.newschool.edu) in March 2016 to give NSSR's annual Hans Maeder lecture, with the proposal that "this talk helps us recover our understanding of the relationship between liberty and equality so that we can reclaim the power latent in their connection. In showing the links between liberty and equality, the talk touches on political, social, and economic aspects of equality."
Allen is a political philosopher renowned for her ability to connect us to complex ideas about democracy, citizenship, and justice. She is the author of four books: The World of Prometheus: The Politics of Punishing in Democratic Athens (2000), Talking to Strangers: Anxieties of Citizenship since Brown v. Board of Education (2004), Why Plato Wrote (2010), and, most recently, Our Declaration (2014), an exploration of America’s founding document and its continuing relevance in our society—a work that The New York Review of Books called a “tour de force.”
Allen is Director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and a professor in Harvard’s Government Department and Graduate School of Education. She is also chair of the Mellon Foundation Board and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Previously, she worked on President Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign, contributed to the 2012 UK Labour party’s policy review, founded the Civic Knowledge Project, and was an instructor for the Odyssey Project. She is also a past chair of the Pulitzer Prize Board, a former dean of humanities at the University of Chicago, and a former trustee at Princeton University and Amherst College.
In 2002, she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship for her ability to combine “the classicist’s careful attention to texts and language with the political theorist’s sophisticated and informed engagement.”

The topic of education now has a form unimaginable in earlier eras of human history. The era of nation-building linked mass education with state power in unprecedented ways. The processes by which political authorities established universal or compulsory education began in Europe only in the 17th century, and in the US were completed only in 1918, when the last of the states then in the Union made education, up through age 16 at least, compulsory. In this country, we are, in other words, still in the first century of state-backed mass education. No wonder we struggle still to understand it.
These two Tanner lectures from Danielle Allen will elucidate the nature of our confusion over the purposes of education, propose a way of resolving some elements of our confusion, and build from this resolution toward a renewal of a humanistic account of education, for which one central goal is preparation for civic life, or participatory readiness.

Danielle Allen is UPS Foundation Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. She is a political theorist who has published broadly in democratic theory, political sociology, and the history of political thought. Danielle S. Allen (born 1971) is an American classicist and political scientist, and UPS Foundation Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study.
She graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in Classics in 1993, from Cambridge University with a Ph.D. in Classics in 1996, and from Harvard University with a Ph.D. in Government in 2001. She taught at University of Chicago, and was Dean of the Division of Humanities from 2004 to 2007. She organized The Dewey Seminar: Education, Schools and the State, with Robert Reich. She currently serves as a trustee of Princeton University.

Speaker Biography: Danielle Allen is a professor and political theorist who has published extensively on democratic theory, political sociology and the history of political thought. Her work as a classicist and political scientist has examined justice and citizenship in ancient Athens and modern America. Some of Allen's publications are "The World of Prometheus: The Politics of Punishing in Democratic Athens," "Talking to Strangers: Anxieties of Citizenship since Brown vs. the Board of Education" and "Why Plato Wrote." Her latest book, "Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality," delivers an in-depth examination of America's Declaration of Independence and develops a bold interpretation that we cannot have freedom as individuals without equality among us as a people. Allen is a frequent public lecturer and contributor to The Washington Post, Boston Review, Democracy, Cabinet and The Nation. She is also the director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.
