The discussion, held May 18, 2011 at the Princeton Club of New York, focused on Junger's most recent book, "WAR." The book documents Junger's time embedded with a United States Army platoon, from 2007 to 2008, in Afghanistan, and chronicles the psychological and social elements of combat and the unbreakable bonds that are formed between platoon mates. Junger's experience is also the focus of the documentary Restrepo which won the Grand Jury Prize for a domestic documentary at the Sundance Film Festival in 2010. The film was also a 2011 Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature.

The differences between the positions of Russia and the West on Crimea and Ukraine appear insurmountable. Yet both sides realise their global interests are better served by a spirit of cooperation, rather than rivalry. What are some of the pragmatic proposals that could bridge the gap and lead to a win-win-win solution, and could they satisfy the hardliners on all sides? Oksana is joined by Michael O'Hanlon, Director of Research at Brookings Institution, to hammer out these issues.

wn.com/Crosstalk Targeting All Terrorists
An expanding strategy and upping the ante – Russia is increasing its campaign against terrorist groups in Syria, while protecting the legitimate government in Damascus. Official Washington continues to struggle to find a response, other than expressing its fury. Being angry at Russia is not a foreign policy. CrossTalking with Ray McGovern, Daniel Lazare, and Michael O'Hanlon.

"He would be foolish to seem that he was actually on the side of Al Qaida because let's face it, Castro has a little better reputation in most of the other countries of the world than he does in the United States and that reputation can be helpful to him, helpful with trade, helpful with tourism and he doesn't want to jeopardize that by seeming to be complicit in the terrible tragedy of September 11 that no government around the world really tolerates or accepts as legitimate. So I think he may express a word here and there of opposition to the US military mission but he doesn't want to go so far to seem in cahoots with Osama Bin Laden."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Hanlon, defence analyst, Brookings Institution:
"We want higher security sites and we certainly want greater vigilance in case any Al Qaida operatives try to sneak onto the base and free their compatriots or undertake terrorist reprisal action against the US but I don't think that's going to be very hard either. This is a relatively isolated base, its relatively easy to defend in that sense. We've been trying to keep Cubans out of it for a long time and trying to keep Al Qaida operatives out therefore shouldn't be that much harder."

STORYLINE:
The Pentagon has announced plans to transfer captured Al Qaida and Taliban fighters to a US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in the coming weeks.
The detainees are currently being held at a Marine base near Kandahar airport and on a U-S ship in the region.
Michael O'Hanlon, a defence analyst at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC, says the Guantanamo Bay location is a good choice for the US military because of past experience hosting thousands of Haitian, Cuban and Kosovar refugees.
He also says an important legal factor is that the base is not on American soil
O'Hanlon says even though Fidel Castro might have objections to the detainees being held in his country, he is unlikely to publicly state them.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says it will take several weeks of preparations before the captured fighters will arrive at the base.
The security will be much tighter than when the base last held refugees O'Hanlon says but he feels the US military is up to the task.

CrossTalk: Dissolve NATO?
NATO – the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – has an identity problem of sorts. To have meaning, cohesion, purpose and reasons to be funded, this alliance needs enemies. On the back of the western-backed regime change in Ukraine, today Russia gives the alliance a reason to exist. Is this wise? CrossTalking with Andranik Migranyan, Brian Becker, and Michael O'Hanlon.

Escalating rhetoric and the doubling down on failed policies: this is one way of viewing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s opinion of the world, particularly Russia. Western sanctions and promises of more sanctions have achieved nothing. Is this why NATO deems Russia a military threat?
