The lingual gyrus of the occipital lobe lies between the calcarine sulcus and the posterior part of the collateral sulcus; behind, it reaches the occipital pole; in front, it is continued on to the tentorial surface of the temporal lobe, and joins the parahippocampal gyrus. The lingual gyrus is so-named because it resembles the tongue in shape.

This region is believed to play an important role in dreaming and vision, especially in recognizing words, regardless of size, font, etc.

Sidarta Tollendal Gomes Ribeiro (Brasília, April 16 , 1971) is a Brazilian neuroscientist and Director of the Brain Institute at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), which he joined in 2008 as Full Professor.. This caused a change in criteria for evaluating candidates for this institution at this level (top of career in Brazilian universities). In order to correct this distortion, from now on every applicant to this position must, necessarily, have proven extensive experience teaching both in the undergraduate and graduate levels [1]. From 2009-2011, he served as Secretary of the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior. His research occurs at the interface of neurophysiology, ethology and molecular biology, working mainly in the following topics: 1) Memory, sleep and dreams; 2) Immediate-early genes and neuronal plasticity; 3) Vocal communication in birds and primates; 4) Symbolic competence in non-human animals.
