BMI vs. Body fat www.teamafterburn.com One of my biggest “pet peeves” is hearing people talk about their “BMI.” BMI stands for Body Mass Index. BMI is the standard used by our health care system to place you into categories based on your height and weight. Now height and weight works well if we all have the exact same amount of muscle but the reality is, we are all different and frankly, the BMI system is not one that should apply to all. We all know that muscle burns calories and the more of it you have, the faster you get to your goal. According to my BMI, I’m considered obese by medical standards! Although a doctor takes a second look and says, “Obviously you work out and have muscle so my system doesn’t apply to you.” Doesn’t apply to me!? If the BMI system doesn’t apply to some of us, it shouldn’t be the standard on all of us! So how did BMI come about and why do we use it? The BMI system was developed in 1833 by a Belgian mathematician named Adolphe Quetelet. Quetelet worked with life insurance companies in order to determine the factors related to birth and death. What we call BMI today is also known as Quetelet’s formula. Can you think of anything else we use from the 1800s? Maybe a fork and spoon. Like me, some may be healthy despite a negative BMI - On the flip side, doctors may also be saying that you are perfectly healthy because of your BMI when in actuality; you may be more at risk than you think. I see it all the time. I have clients, that according to their height and weight, are perfectly fine but when administering a body fat analysis, we find that they are well above healthy body fat standards putting them at risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and heart attack! They simply lack muscle. Hey, but that’s okay because your doctor will just give you a prescription that you’ll have to take FOR LIFE (masking the problems, not fixing them). Pharmaceutical medications are quite pricey but you should be fine as long as your insurance covers them (are we seeing a trend here?)! To make matters worse, the fillers within your pills tear up your liver and kidneys while the multiple, additional side effects end up making you worse off than before! So what are we to do? Get a body fat analysis! Find out exactly how much fat you really have to lose! You’re most likely not going to get a body fat analysis from your family practitioner so head down to your local fitness facility or a Team Afterburn studio and meet with a club manager. Son meteoros de velocidad alta (59 km/s) que radian de la constelación de Perseo o Perseus. Por tanto su alta declinación (58°) no permite su observación en regiones australes, ya que desde el ecuador alcanza tan sólo los 32° de altura. Las Perseidas son también conocidas con el nombre de lágrimas de San Lorenzo, porque el 10 de agosto es el día de este santo. En la Edad Medieval y el Renacimiento las Perseidas tenían lugar la noche en que se le recordaba, de tal manera que se asociaron con las lágrimas que vertió San Lorenzo al ser quemado en la hoguera. El registro más antiguo que se tiene de la actividad de las Perseidas es del año 36 d. This has led many experts to discount BMI as an archaic measurement that isn't accurate for many people. What is BMI, and why is it a good measure for some, maybe, and completely wrong for others? BMI, or body mass index, was created in the early 1800s by Adolphe Quetelet. Because of that, it's sometimes called the Quetelet index. It's nothing more than a way of comparing a person's weight to his or her height, and determining if his or her weight falls into a healthy and normal range. The BMI is still used today pretty much as it was when Quetelet invented it. The formula for figuring BMI (body fat, bone and frame size, muscle and body type aren't included in that) is this: Take your height in meters squared (your height times itself) and divide your weight in kilograms by that number. For example, if I'm 5 feet tall, that's about 1.5 meters. To square that number, take 1.5 times 1.5. The result of that is 2.5. So if I weigh 120 pounds, that's about 54.5 kilograms. Divide 54.5 by 2.5 and I get 21.8 as my BMI. The normal weight range is from 18.5 to 24.9, so 21.8 is classified as a normal weight. Underweight is considered 18.5 and below, while overweight people will calculate a BMI of 25 to 29.9. A BMI of 30 or greater indicates obesity. BMI, body fat and general health can all be used as signs of how fit a person is. This has led many experts to discount BMI as an archaic measurement that isn't accurate for many people. What is BMI, and why is it a good measure for some, maybe, and completely wrong for others? BMI, or body mass index, was created in the early 1800s by Adolphe Quetelet. Because of that, it's sometimes called the Quetelet index. It's nothing more than a way of comparing a person's weight to his or her height, and determining if his or her weight falls into a healthy and normal range. The BMI is still used today pretty much as it was when Quetelet invented it. The formula for figuring BMI (body fat, bone and frame size, muscle and body type aren't included in that) is this: Take your height in meters squared (your height times itself) and divide your weight in kilograms by that number. For example, if I'm 5 feet tall, that's about 1.5 meters. To square that number, take 1.5 times 1.5. The result of that is 2.5. So if I weigh 120 pounds, that's about 54.5 kilograms. Divide 54.5 by 2.5 and I get 21.8 as my BMI. The normal weight range is from 18.5 to 24.9, so 21.8 is classified as a normal weight. Underweight is considered 18.5 and below, while overweight people will calculate a BMI of 25 to 29.9. A BMI of 30 or greater indicates obesity. BMI, body fat and general health can all be used as signs of how fit a person is. But where general health is pretty self-explanatory and the percentage of body fat clearly shows whether a person gets enough exercise or not, BMI is a bit trickier. People with a lot of muscle don't show accurate BMI readings. Because muscle weighs so much heaver than fat but takes up less space, a relatively small statured person can carry a lot of muscle weight without looking huge. BMI doesn't take that into account. Football players, professional wrestlers, bodybuilders, and virtually any athlete who has a lot of muscle is going to measure as overweight and even obese according to the BMI. So it's not accurate for them. Is it accurate for everyone else? The answer to that is yes, and no. It depends on you. The BMI typically doesn't show an accurate result for children. And extremely tall or large-framed people will show overweight or obese classifications more easily because of the extra weight from their bones and muscles. Albert was born at Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg, Germany, and was the second son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. Albert's future wife, Queen Victoria, was born in the same year with the assistance of the same midwife. Albert was baptised into the Lutheran Evangelical Church on 19 September 1819 in the Marble Hall at Schloss Rosenau with water taken from the local river, the Itz. His godparents were his paternal grandmother, the Dowager Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld; his maternal grandfather, the Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg; the Emperor of Austria; the Duke of Teschen; and Emanuel, Count von Mensdorff-Pouilly. In 1825, Albert's great-uncle, Frederick IV, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, died.
