"Nevada's the last of the live and let live states," says Dennis Hof, the self-described "Brothel King" and owner and proprieter of Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch, made famous as the setting for the HBO documentary series, Cathouse (2005-2008). "I don't care if you smoke weed. Don't bother me because I have a safe full of guns and I'm in the sex business."
Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Hof in his brothel for a wide-ranging interview about sex, prostitution, black markets, politics, and more.
Hof acquired the Moonlite Bunny Ranch in 1992 and systematically pushed it into the public eye through a blend of showmanship, attention-seeking, and media outreach he calls the "PT Barnum/Andy Kaufman" school of marketing and publicity. In fact, he claims that Andy Kaufman gave him the initial idea to buy the Bunny Ranch when they partied there together in the late '70s.
"In about '78, Kaufman said, 'Dennis, let's buy this place and make it our den,'" says Hof (1:30).
Since then, Hof has gone on to acquire six more brothels, giving him a huge share of a national market that only includes 17 total brothels. This is because Nevada is the only state in the U.S. that has legalized prostitution, and only in counties with populations of less than 400,000. This, of course, rules out Clark County, where Las Vegas is located.
"It's illegal in Las Vegas, and look what you've got," says Hof. "You've got 2,000 girls a month being arrested. Lots of guys being arrested, lives being ruined... Las Vegas is the sexual cesspool of America." (24:20)
He also points to the remarkably high rate of HIV infection among prostitutes in Las Vegas. By contrast, he says, under the state's regime of mandatory STD testing, there has never been a documented case of HIV among licensed workers in Nevada's brothels.

Decades after she became known as the 'Hollywood madame,' Heidi Fleiss is back, this time, as a consultant on a book by the owner of Nevada's brothel, the Moonlite Bunny Ranch.
Fleiss and Dennis Hof have teamed up for 'The Art of the Pimp.'
"I love her to death. She helped me so much with this book, giving me the insights on the prostitution industry," said Hof.
Hof includes stories from people whom dislike him including an ex-girlfriend and a therapist.
Hof's message in 'The Art of the Pimp' is let's legalize prostitution and put an end to sex trafficking.
“The only way we can clean this up in America is to control the supply side and get the girls licensed and tested and proper regulations. Billions of dollars are spent each year on sex in America and nobody profits from it except for criminals. Disease rates are out of hand in America and at the Bunny Ranch there are none," said Hof.
The brothel, which is legal, has been the setting for a wildly popular series on HBO.
“There is a waiting list to work there. The show is on its 15th season,” said Fleiss.
“Sex trafficking is out of hand in epidemic proportions in America and nobody wants to deal with it. When you legalize something—the sex trade—you eliminate sex trafficking. I dislike pimps and I dislike exploitation of women," said Hof.

Dennis Hof (born October 14, 1946) is an American pimp, entrepreneur, and restaurateur. He is best known as the former, owning two brothels in Nevada. His brothels are in Moundhouse, Nevada, a few minutes outside Carson City, less than an hour by car from Reno, Nevada. He also owns a nightclub restaurant, NV50, across the street from the Moonlite Bunny Ranch.
In Cathouse: The Musical, Hof reveals that he only dates prostitutes. "I don't date civilians (non-working girls)." The documentary series has shown his several relationships with employees, most notably adult film star Sunset Thomas.
Hof started by purchasing and remodeling The Moonlite BunnyRanch, founded in 1955; he also purchased another brothel, formerly Kitty's, and renamed it The BunnyRanch Two. In contrast to other Nevada brothel owners, members of the Nevada Brothel Owners' Association, who prefer to keep a low profile[citation needed], Hof, despite Nevada laws which ban brothel advertising, maintains a high profile to create publicity for his brothels[citation needed].

Ronald Jeremy Hyatt (born March 12, 1953), usually called Ron Jeremy, is an American adult film actor. Nicknamed "The Hedgehog", he was ranked by AVN at number one in their "The 50 Top Porn Stars of All Time" list. Reason TV's Zach Weissmueller sat down with Hof in his brothel for a wide-ranging interview about sex, prostitution, black markets, politics, and more.
Hof acquired the Moonlite Bunny Ranch in 1992 and systematically pushed it into the public eye through a blend of showmanship, attention-seeking, and media outreach he calls the "PT Barnum/Andy Kaufman" school of marketing and publicity. In fact, he claims that Andy Kaufman gave him the initial idea to buy the Bunny Ranch when they partied there together in the late '70s.
"In about '78, Kaufman said, 'Dennis, let's buy this place and make it our den,'" says Hof (1:30).
Since then, Hof has gone on to acquire six more brothels, giving him a huge share of a national market that only includes 17 total brothels. This is because Nevada is the only state in the U.S. that has legalized prostitution, and only in counties with populations of less than 400,000. This, of course, rules out Clark County, where Las Vegas is located.
"It's illegal in Las Vegas, and look what you've got," says Hof. "You've got 2,000 girls a month being arrested. Lots of guys being arrested, lives being ruined... Las Vegas is the sexual cesspool of America." (24:20)
He also points to the remarkably high rate of HIV infection among prostitutes in Las Vegas. By contrast, he says, under the state's regime of mandatory STD testing, there has never been a documented case of HIV among licensed workers in Nevada's brothels.

"Nevada's the last of the live and let live states," says Dennis Hof, the self-described "Brothel King" and owner and proprieter of Nevada's Moonlite Bunny Ranch, made famous as the setting for the HBO documentary series, Cathouse (2005-2008). "I don't care if you smoke weed. Don't bother me because I have a safe full of guns and I'm in the sex business."

"I love her to death. She helped me so much with this book, giving me the insights on the prostitution industry," said Hof.
Hof includes stories from people whom dislike him including an ex-girlfriend and a therapist.
Hof's message in 'The Art of the Pimp' is let's legalize prostitution and put an end to sex trafficking.
“The only way we can clean this up in America is to control the supply side and get the girls licensed and tested and proper regulations. Billions of dollars are spent each year on sex in America and nobody profits from it except for criminals. Disease rates are out of hand in America and at the Bunny Ranch there are none," said Hof.
The brothel, which is legal, has been the setting for a wildly popular series on HBO.
“There is a waiting list to work there. The show is on its 15th season,” said Fleiss.
“Sex trafficking is out of hand in epidemic proportions in America and nobody wants to deal with it. When you legalize something—the sex trade—you eliminate sex trafficking. I dislike pimps and I dislike exploitation of women," said Hof.
