Excavators have the primary task of operating a machine used in building, construction and demolition. They must have experience in operating heavy machinery and be able to comply with safety regulations, ensuring a safe work environment, as well as being confident behind the wheel and able to maneuver the vehicle with ease and precision.
This is key to operating within the construction industry, which is a high-risk industry. Experience within a similar heavy machinery role will likely influence their success.
The role is extremely variable depending on the company they work for and the contract they have secured. From bulk excavation such as removing the earth prior to the building of a basement to fine trim operations such as removing a piece of road a day in the life of an excavator is never the same.
Excavators mostly work outdoors on construction sites, they work in various weather conditions such as hot or cold, rain, dust and noisy environments. Some excavators are air-conditioned and are sound proof which makes the working conditions much more comfortable. Excavators can be required to work overtime, night shifts and on Saturdays depending on the type of project and site.
Most employers will often look for at least a year's experience in operating an excavator in addition to an industry recognized excavator ticket. Excavators are also required to have a construction induction card.
Experience is key and is something only on the job training can offer. You must be a good problem solver who is able to overcome obstacles that arise in the construction and demolition process.
- Able to pay attention to detail
- Good communication skills
- Manage time effectively
