The $7 Million Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE is a global, three-year competition challenging teams to advance breakthrough technologies for rapid, unmanned and high-resolution ocean exploration.
The $1M NOAA bonus prize will be awarded to teams that demonstrate their technology can “sniff out” a specified object in the ocean through biological and chemical signals. This will allow us to respond to emergencies, and discover new marine life and underwater communities in a way that never existed before.

Audacia y abundancia.

The underwater X-Prize: $7 million award for craft that can reveal the ‘alien world beneath us’ and 3D map the sea floor
Competition has teams create maps of ocean with own unique robots
Also offering a $1m bonus prize to teams who's technology can ‘sniff out’ a specified object in the ocean through biological and chemical signals
The competition will last three years, with map design and series of tasks
$4m grand prize, $1m second prize, 10 teams that make it to the second round will split a $1m milestone prize and there is a $1m bonus prize
Space may be called ‘the final frontier’, but there are many place on Earth that have yet to be explored, specifically our oceans.
An organization, which offers incentive prizes, is giving inventors an opportunity to create autonomous devices capable of deep sea exploration.
Shell Ocean Discovery XPrize will hold two rounds in a three year long competition, with a total of $7 million in prizes.
This event challenges teams to map a 4km-deep, 500-sq-km area of the sea floor using their own unique robots.
As part of the total $7 million prize purse, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is offering a $1 million bonus prize to teams that demonstrate their technology can ‘sniff out’ a specified object in the ocean through biological and chemical signals.
David Schewitz, Shell vice president of geophysics for the Americas, and Richard Spinrad, chief scientist at NOAA, joined Diamandis on stage to launch the new competition.
‘Our oceans cover two-thirds of our planet’s surface and are a crucial global source of food, energy, economic security, and even the air we breathe, yet 95 percent of the deep sea remains a mystery to us,’ Diamandis said.
‘In fact, we have better maps of the surface of Mars than we do of our own seafloor.’
‘The Shell Ocean Discovery XPRIZE will address a critical ocean challenge by accelerating innovation to further explore one of our greatest unexplored frontiers.’
The three year competition is broken down with the first nine months set for team registration, 12 months for initial solution development and 18 months to complete two rounds of testing and judging.

Sometime in late 2017, a tiny vehicle will blast into space from India on a 10-day journey to the moon.
As it finally lands on the lunar surface some 238,900 miles later, its fate will rest entirely on four small aluminium parts in its shock absorbers. They need to work in a vacuum, with lubrication that doesn’t freeze or jam no matter what the angle. It's not everyday that you get to see the future happening right before your eyes. We're so focused on the day to day, paralyzed by uninformative and amygdala-stimulating news reports, that we rarely allow ourselves to take some time off to think about the future of humanity. The challenges we face today seem so out of our reach, and we feel so insignificant, that even when we do ponder about what's coming next, it's no more than a mere intellectual exercise.
However, there are people who not only think about the future constantly, but proactively make plans on how to improve it, and often deliver on the promises. On May 2015 I was privileged enough to be part of such a group at the XPRIZE VISIONEERING conference in Los Angeles.

ABOUT XPRIZE
Each year, corporate leaders, philanthropists, heads of innovation and XPRIZE Trustees gather for a multi-day Visioneering meetup to brainstorm, debate, and prioritize which of the world's Grand Challenges might be solved through incentivized competition.
http://xprize.org
XPRIZE is an educational (501c3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity, thereby inspiring the formation of new industries and the revitalization of markets that are currently stuck due to existing failures or a commonly held belief that a solution is not possible. XPRIZE addresses the world's Grand Challenges by creating and managing large-scale, high-profile, incentivized prize competitions that stimulate investment in research and development worth far more than the prize itself. It motivates and inspires brilliant innovators from all disciplines to leverage their intellectual and financial capital.

Update on the Google XPRIZE Foundation
The mission of the Google Lunar XPRIZE is to incentivize space entrepreneurs to create a new era of affordable access to the Moon and beyond.
Created in 2007, the Google Lunar XPRIZE has reinvigorated the public’s interest in the Moon by highlighting the endeavors and technological achievements of the competition’s global teams. It is also inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, space explorers, and adventurers.
The competition’s $30 million prize purse will be awarded to teams who are able to land a privately funded rover on the moon, travel 500 meters, and transmit back high definition video and images. The first team that successfully completes this mission will be awarded the $20 million dollar Grand Prize. The second team to successfully complete the mission will be awarded $5 million dollars. To win either of these prizes, teams must prove that 90% of their mission costs were funded by private sources. Teams have until the end of 2016 to announce a verified launch contract to remain in the competition and complete their mission by the end of 2017.
In addition, several bonus prizes are available for further technical and scientific achievements, such as surviving the lunar night or visiting an Apollo landing site.
---
Dr. Andrew Barton joins XPRIZE with 10 years of experience working in the aerospace and mechanical engineering fields. As Director of Technical Operations for the Google Lunar XPRIZE, Dr. Barton is responsible for finalizing the prize's rules and guidelines, selecting and managing the panel of independent judges and communicating with external stakeholders on technical aspects. Dr. Barton's experience spanning large and small space projects will ensure that the Google Lunar XPRIZE rewards innovate and talented teams, setting the scene for the next wave of space exploration.
Dr. Barton holds Ph.D and bachelors degrees in aerospace engineering from the University of Sydney and a Masters degree in Space Studies from the International Space University. He is also an avid student of languages and international cultures.

I developed Rexcel for analyzing standardized test data for schools. Although I did if for a specific application, the approach I took was very general, making it easy for people to perform complex spreadsheet processing in a language other than VBA.
Using a Racket-based prototype to get our foot in the door, OntoPillot’s formal methods work is now in front of a Fortune 500 company to discuss possible collaboration. Using Racket’s compiler tools, including the syntax browser, we were able to create a credible prototype for a format methods tool development environment.
Using Racket, StarShine Academy has made galloping progress toward the software needed to win the Global Learning XPRIZE. StarShine Academy has developed learning-to-read prototypes in Racket that our reading expert mentors said they had been awaiting for a decade or more. We have also begun work on a math learning prototype based on a world class math learning method from Canada.
I want to share the excitement of using the remarkable tools that the Racket community has developed, to create innovative applications that shake up the real world.
After his education at Caltech, MIT, Texas Instruments, Stanford (EE Ph.D), and Motorola, and after teaching medical informatics for five years at the Arizona School of Health Sciences, Byron Davies worked at several startups before settling into a dual career at StarShine Academy, a K-12 charter school and laboratory for learning, and Ontopilot, a company using mathematical logic and specialized hardware to develop software that debugs other software. Exclusively a Lisper since 1973, he developed the first general-purpose “twist-down” data browser, one of the first web applications for manufacturing (published in CACM), and—in Racket—the proof-of-concept prototype for OntoPilot’s Systems Integrity Analysis System. His current goal is to implement, in Racket, the tablet-based software that will win the Global Learning XPRIZE.

Watch our cool movie about going back to the Moon. In case you haven’t heard, the Moon is trending again… and in a big way. Narrated by Tim Allen (voice of Buzz Lightyear), this is a complete behind-the-scenes feature on the $30 million Google Lunar XPRIZE, the largest incentivized prize in history. Adapted from the award-winning digital planetarium show, the 24-minute movie chronicles 18 teams from around the world looking to make history by landing a privately funded robotic spacecraft on the Moon. This global competition is designed to spark imagination and inspire a renewed commitment to space exploration, not by governments or countries – but by the citizens of the world. The Google Lunar XPrize's objective is to see if a privately-funded Moon mission can accomplish the feat at a fraction of the cost that governmental space bodies incur, and simultaneously develop newer technologies for space missions. Teams have to develop a spacecraft that can do a soft landing on the Moon. They have to develop a rover that will dismount from the landing craft and travel 500 metres on the lunar surface. And they have to develop an imaging system on the rover that will capture high quality images and video of the lunar surface and transmit them to Earth. The competition began with 32 teams, but only 18 remain.
Only five teams have cleared terrestrial milestones and won $6 million prize money. And among these five, the first one to launch a rover onto the Moon will receive the final $30 million prize money.
Five Finalists:
1. Astrobotic (US) (Milestone Prize $1.75 million)
2. Moon Express (US) (Milestone Prize $1.25 million)
3. Team Indus (India) (Milestone Prize $1.00 million)
4. Part-Time Scientists (Germany) (Milestone Prize $0.75 million)
5. Hakuto (Japan) (Milestone Prize $0.50 million)
Now these five will compete among themselves to launch a Lunar Rover before the end of 2017.
All the Best to Team Indus and Indian Space Industry.
