Ulmus americana, generally known as the American elm or, less commonly, as the white elm or water elm, is a species native to eastern North America, occurring from Nova Scotia west to Alberta and Montana, and south to Florida and central Texas. The American elm is an extremely hardy tree that can withstand winter temperatures as low as −42 °C (−44 °F). Trees in areas unaffected by Dutch elm disease can live for several hundred years. A prime example of the species was the Sauble Elm, which grew beside the banks of the Sauble River in Ontario, Canada, to a height of 43 m (140 ft), with a d.b.h of 196 cm (6.43 ft) before succumbing to Dutch elm disease; when it was felled in 1968, a tree-ring count established that it had germinated in 1701.
For over 80 years, U. americana has been identified as a tetraploid, i.e. having double the usual number of chromosomes, making it unique within the genus. However, a recent study by the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture has found that about 20% of wild American elms are in fact diploid, and may even constitute another species. Moreover several triploid trees, known only in cultivation, are possessed of a high degree of resistance to Dutch elm disease, suggesting the diploid parent trees, which have markedly smaller cells than the tetraploid, may too be highly resistant to the disease.
http://www.tytyga.com/American-Elm-p/american-elm-tree.htm Plant a fast growing American elm tree in your garden or landscape. Elm trees are some of the most important shade trees to plant in the United States. The trees are very popular for planting along city streets and in state and city parks or recreational areas, and the cold hardiness of the American Elm and the extremely fast growing Chinese Elm, make those two varieties the most important commercially. The Drake Elm is commonly used as a street tree, because of the beautiful foliage and the distinctive peeling chocolate colored bark.

Here Tis: I've actually started working on my American Elm longbow. It will be 78", tip to tip and I'm going to shoot for 70 pounds at 30 inches. A bow this length could surpass a 30 inch draw.
American Elm, also known as Ulmus Americana, is part of the Elm tree family. It’s native to Eastern North America. It is a deciduous tree, and was one of the most prominent trees across North America before the Dutch Elm disease, which resulted in the destruction of the bigger part of Elm trees. It has a vase like structure with an umbrella like canopy. These elms grow really fast, and are generally huge, going up to 100 feet in height. The bark of the American is dark grey-brown, and leaves are alternate, pointed, double-teethed, and around one to five inches long. The Ulmus Americana, like most elms, grows well in most types of soil. Therefore, it makes for a great bonsai tree to grow. Other elms that are similarly good choices are the English Elm, Wych Elm, and the Chinese Elm.
This bonsai can be planted from a cutting or from seeds. The latter are easy to find for sale. The seeds must be germinated before potting, which takes around 2 days. It is a fast growing tree and adapts well to the most types of soils, though it grows best in a moist, draining soil. It needs to be placed in full sun or partial shade. The tree is not much sensitive to cold and can bear quite low minimum temperatures. The American Elm should be watered as and when required and not regularly. It should be watered deeply so that the soil is thoroughly wet and most not be let completely dried out. The tree should be fertilized every 25-30 days during Spring, using a fertilizer rich in nitrogen and potassium. Fertilizers with organic content should be preferred. The American Elm Bonsai responds...
Zelkova is often listed as a replacement for American Elm since it has roughly the same vase shape and grows 90 to 100 feet tall with a 60 to 80 foot spread. Zelkova is massive, with the trunk capable of growing to four feet or more in diameter. It has a moderate growth rate and likes a sunny exposure. Branches are more numerous and smaller in diameter than American Elm. Leaves are 1.5 to 4 inches long, turning a brilliant yellow, orange, or burnt umber in the fall. This elm is a native of Japan and China and is related to the Ulmus genus, which is the genus of the European and American elms. It is deciduous with small ovate, serrated, pointed leaves and smooth gray bark. It is a vigorous grower and is most often used for broom and group plantings. Root-over-rock plantings are also common....

Overview of 15 gallon bald cypress and American elm
This Zelkova, originally from Japan and China, is related to the Ulmus genus, which is the genus of the European and American elms. The Zelkova is in fact quite similar to the Ulmus (the Chinese elm), but it has single-toothed leaves whereas the Ulmus has double-toothed leaves. The Zelkova leaves are ovate, toothed and pointed. Specific Bonsai care guidelines for the Japanese Elm (Zelkova) Position: Although an outdoor tree, when acclimatized to indoor conditions (often the case when bought in a garden center or so) it should be kept indoors at least during the winter. When placed outside however, protect the tree well during the winter. The tree prefers much light, not necessarily direct sunlight. Watering: Water Japanese Elm Bonsai regularly. Feeding: Fertilize the tree once or twice eve...
