A brief visit to the pedestrian plaza and transportation hub of La Défense, the trendy business suburb of Paris.
La Défense is a planned community in which cars, trains, and buses have been banished to underground tunnels and terminals, leaving the open street level to pedestrians. The area got off to a slow start decades ago, but has grown in prestige and popularity and is now one of the most expensive business districts in Europe. It's a nice place to work, especially at lunchtime, when everyone comes out onto the plaza! At night, though, it's deserted.
This video shows the plaza and some of its best known buildings, including the CNIT, Grande Arche, etc. It also takes a look at the vast underground transportation complex beneath the plaza (7:30).

Paris La Defense - Une Ville En Concert was a concert held by musician Jean Michel Jarre on the district of La Défense in Paris on Bastille Day, July 14, 1990. About 2.5 million people standing in front of the pyramidical stage all the way down to the Arc de Triomphe witnessed this event, setting a new Guinness Book of Records entry for Jarre. The concert was funded by Mairie De Paris, Ministry of Culture and a small cluster of high-profile Parisian business concerns. Later, a concert video as well as a photobook of the event were released.
The show featured new tracks from the Waiting for Cousteau album, and vast grotesque marionettes created by Peter Minshall.

La Défense (pronounced [la de.fɑ̃s]) is a major business district of the Paris aire urbaine. With a population of 20,000, it is centered in an orbital motorway straddling the Hauts-de-Seine département municipalities of Nanterre, Courbevoie and Puteaux. The district is at the westernmost extremity of Paris's 10 km long Historical Axis, which starts at the Louvre in Central Paris and continues along the Champs-Élysées, well beyond the Arc de Triomphe before culminating at La Défense.
Around its 110-metre (360 ft)-high Grande Arche and esplanade ("le Parvis"), la Défense holds many of the Paris urban area's tallest high-rises. With its 77.5 acres (314,000 m2), its 72 glass-and-steel slick buildings including 14 high-rises above 150 metres (490 ft), its 180,000 daily workers and 3.5 million square metres (37.7 million sq ft) of office space, La Défense is Europe's largest purpose-built business district.
La Défense is named after the iconic statue La Défense de Paris, which was erected in 1883 to commemorate the soldiers who had defended Paris during the Franco-Prussian War.

Even if Paris is famous for the old buildings and monuments of its historic downtown, its metropolitan area is actually the second containing the most skyscrapers in Europe (the first being the Greater London area). Most of the Paris area's high-rise buildings are located in La Défense, the main business district of the city. A few weeks ago, a subscriber ("Vallonism") asked me if I could shoot a video in this area. I recently visited a few friends living not too far from there, so I had the opportunity to shoot this short video. Of course, there are much less skyscrapers in La Défense that there are in many other cities in the world. Its originality lies in the fact that all the district is actually a huge pedestrian area. It can be reached by roads, trains, metros and buses, but they all are underground. La Défense, Paris
A brief visit to the pedestrian plaza and transportation hub of La Défense, the trendy business suburb of Paris. La Défense is a planned community in which cars, trains, and buses have been banished to underground tunnels and terminals, leaving the open street level to pedestrians. The area got off to a slow start decades ago, but has grown in prestige and popularity and is now one of the most expensive business districts in Europe. It's a nice place to work, especially at lunchtime, when everyone comes out onto the plaza! At night, though, it's deserted. This video shows the plaza and some of its best known buildings, including the CNIT, Grande Arche, etc. It also takes a look at the vast underground transportation complex beneath the plaza (7:30). -

Even if Paris is famous for the old buildings and monuments of its historic downtown, its metropolitan area is actually the second containing the most skyscrapers in Europe (the first being the Greater London area). Most of the Paris area's high-rise buildings are located in La Défense, the main business district of the city. A few weeks ago, a subscriber ("Vallonism") asked me if I could shoot a video in this area. I recently visited a few friends living not too far from there, so I had the opportunity to shoot this short video. J'aime Paris, son architecture, ses rues pavées, ses bâtiments chargés d'histoire... mais je déteste La Défense et ses infâmes tours ultramodernes. Comme de nos jours il est devenu compliqué de détourner un 747 pour débarrasser le paysage de ces tours disgracieuses, je me suis dis que l'on pourrait tirer parti de ces aménagements et transformer un centre d'affaires en véritable terrain de jeu ! -

Even if Paris is famous for the old buildings and monuments of its historic downtown, its metropolitan area is actually the second containing the most skyscrapers in Europe (the first being the Greater London area).
Most of the Paris area's high-rise buildings are located in La Défense, the main business district of the city. A few weeks ago, a subscriber ("Vallonism") asked me if I could shoot a video in this area. I recently visited a few friends living not too far from there, so I had the opportunity to shoot this short video.
Of course, there are much less skyscrapers in La Défense that there are in many other cities in the world. For the skyscraper enthusiasts, this is obviously not as impressive as New York, Chicago, Dubai, Hong Kong or Tokyo. However, this is an unknown part of Paris which worth to be seen at least once. Its originality lies in the fact that all the district is actually a huge pedestrian area. It can be reached by roads, trains, metros and buses, but they all are underground.
A few facts and figures about La Défense:
- 72 glass and steel buildings and skyscrapers;
- 25,000 permanent residents and 180,000 daily workers;
- Many of the top French companies have their head offices here;
- Always new skyscrapers in construction or in project (for example: http://www.hermitage.fr).

La démarche du survivaliste n'est pas la promesse d'une catastrophe, ou l'espoir inconscient d'une implosion de la fabrique pour pouvoir enfin revêtir nos parades camouflées et sortir le calibre 12 tacticool, mais bien la construction d'un mode de vie qui nous invite a matérialiser toujours un peu plus d'indépendance, de résilience et de liberté.
Le survivalisme est le reflet physique, presque symbolique, d'une prise de conscience particulière, qui exprime non pas l'idée de s'affranchir du système par la destruction de celui-ci, comme un enfant frustré et ne pouvant pas briller ou s'assumer devant les règles de jeu en place, mais bien par la construction, en parallèle, d'une manière de vivre que nous pouvons comprendre et qui nous est utile au quotidien.

Je ne m'intéresse pas a l'hygiène et la santé pour pouvoir me faire des points de sutures après une fusillade quand l'effondrement de l'économie globale nous aura plongée au 18eme siècle...je le fais pour pouvoir intelligemment porter assistance a une personne blessée, a mon voisin, pour pouvoir fabriquer mon propre savon bio sans tests sur les animaux, pour pouvoir éviter de tomber malade et m'interdire la productivité, pour faire des économies, pour peut être réduire l'impact sur le monde hospitalier du pouvoir des grandes compagnies pharmaceutiques...
Je ne fais pas de la récupération des eaux de pluie pour pouvoir continuer de boire durant la prochaine pandémie, je le fais pour réduire le gaspillage ambiant d'une ressource critique, pour réduire mes factures, pour arroser mes légumes, pour ne pas être dépendant du système si il y a une coupure, parce que c'est facile et que ça a du sens.
Je ne m'intéresse pas aux armes a feu pour tuer quelques pilleurs de riz durant une guerre civile, je m'y intéresse pour avoir un moyen adapté de défendre la vie de mes proches dans un cadre extrêmement précis et stricte, pour pouvoir récolter ma propre viande, aussi dans un cadre extrêmement précis et stricte, pour contribuer a un certain équilibre de la force, et finalement pour le plaisir que me procure le tir le dimanche entre amis.
Je ne fais pas des réserves de nourriture pour pouvoir bouffer quand tout le monde a faim, je le fais pour m'affranchir d'un système de distribution "juste-a-temps", pour faire des économies, pour mitiger les fluctuations de prix causées par la spéculation sur les produits de base, pour ne pas avoir a prendre la voiture le dimanche matin quand je m'aperçois que je n'ai plus de sucre ou de sel, et donc payer plus de taxes, utiliser plus d'essence...

MAIS QU'EST-CE QUE LA DÉFENSE SCANDINAVE ?
Caractérisée par les coups, 1.e4 d5, la Scandinave est l'ouverture la plus vieille du monde. Déjà au 15e siècle, la Scandinave est citée par le premier prosateur échiquéen : Luis Ramírez de Lucena.
Toutefois, si la Scandinave est l'ouverture la plus vieille, elle n'en est pas pour autant, la plus jouée. Ainsi, cette défense asymétrique, n'arrive qu'en 7e position après la Sicilienne, les débuts ...e5, la Française et autres Pircs et Défense Moderne.

Comme de nos jours il est devenu compliqué de détourner un 747 pour débarrasser le paysage de ces tours disgracieuses, je me suis dis que l'on pourrait tirer parti de ces aménagements et transformer un centre d'affaires en véritable terrain de jeu !

The malicious that the language of Malta is like of an Italian which trying to speak Arabic however he only speaks English. And this complexity can be experience in not only the language but also the whole mentality and lifestyle of the people living here. Malta is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea close to the coast of Northern Africa and only one thousand kilometers from Sicily. The Archipelago is part of the British Commonwealth. So, it's quite obvious that Arabic, Italian and British and other cultures influenced it.
Malta's language basically is related to the Semitic language family and so it's related to Arabic and Hebrew. It's the only surviving form of the Phoenicians language so this is truly unique. The capital of the Maltese Archipelago of three inhabited and two uninhabited islands is Valletta. Valletta is built on the peninsula surrounded by two bays. After the Turkish' siege, the Popes send his Architect Francisco Lipari here who together with Gerolamo Cassar, the chief architect of the order of knighthood planned the symmetrical square reticulated street structure of the new town.
For the construction, they used rocks extracted underneath the town area. Therefore today there's a several kilometer long tunnel system running under Valletta. The upper house was bomb during World War II. There are plans for the rebuilding, however it's better not to expect this opening in the next one or two years. The busiest street of Valletta is Liberty Street starting from the town gate.
We can recover from the fatigue of sightseeing by sitting on one of the café terraces. The most famous is the Café Cordino. Behind the coffee, inside the beautiful library, there's an audiovisual exhibition on the history of the St. John. The sounds and picture effects are cutting edge.
The palace of the Grand Master has lasted one decade starting from 1570. The renaissance building has been both the master's office and resident. Today it's a presidential palace and meeting place of the House of Commons. The table is placed on the wall of the inside yard and remind us the vistas of the pope and the queen.
The interest of trick el dasca which is parallel to Liberty Street is that it was the only street in Valletta more where the nights have been allowed to fight a duel. Near, there are the toy museum and a small product palace, the Casa Roca Picola where paintings from the 15th to 17th centuries are exhibited. Nowadays, there are only 8,000 habitants living in the city and many moved out to the suburbs.
In Valletta, traveling by car is problematic because they drive on the left and it's hard to find a parking place. It's better if we visit the inner areas by walking or by a small horse carriage called Karrozzin. The star shape of St. Elma was built on the former place of the watch tower. Some scenes of the Oscar winning film Gladiator were shot here.
Inside we find a World War Museum converted from the command center of the British Air Defense. Besides others, General Eisenhower's jeep named husky is guarded here as well as three contemporary airplanes of the Maltese air force. One is even a little interested in military history can spend illuminating hours here.
The name of the St. John Cathedral indicates that it received its cathedral status from the Pope together with its fellow Medina. The building represents a classical byzantine Basilica. We can see simple and clear forms on the outside and rich baroque interior. In olden times the Congresses of the Knights were held here. When Napoleon's army ravaged Malta, the silver gate was painted black in order to prevent soldier's recognizing how valuable it was.
The flooring of the main ship is made from 400 carve colored marble gravestones. Under which is night rest. The 12 Grand Masters are buried here. Among them de la Vallett, his coffin was brought over from the triumphful ladican temple in Saint John fortress. Caravaggio's famous painting titled "St. John's as beheading" is exhibited in the cathedral museum. The painter is escape from Naples to Malta after he killed his enemy. The painter signature on the painting is no worthy as it's the continuation of the blood coming from the chop head.

The malicious that the language of Malta is like of an Italian which trying to speak Arabic however he only speaks English. And this complexity can be experience in not only the language but also the whole mentality and lifestyle of the people living here. Malta is located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea close to the coast of Northern Africa and only one thousand kilometers from Sicily. The Archipelago is part of the British Commonwealth. So, it's quite obvious that Arabic, Italian and British and other cultures influenced it.
Malta's language basically is related to the Semitic language family and so it's related to Arabic and Hebrew. It's the only surviving form of the Phoenicians language so this is truly unique. The capital of the Maltese Archipelago of three inhabited and two uninhabited islands is Valletta. Valletta is built on the peninsula surrounded by two bays. After the Turkish' siege, the Popes send his Architect Francisco Lipari here who together with Gerolamo Cassar, the chief architect of the order of knighthood planned the symmetrical square reticulated street structure of the new town.
For the construction, they used rocks extracted underneath the town area. Therefore today there's a several kilometer long tunnel system running under Valletta. The upper house was bomb during World War II. There are plans for the rebuilding, however it's better not to expect this opening in the next one or two years. The busiest street of Valletta is Liberty Street starting from the town gate.
We can recover from the fatigue of sightseeing by sitting on one of the café terraces. The most famous is the Café Cordino. Behind the coffee, inside the beautiful library, there's an audiovisual exhibition on the history of the St. John. The sounds and picture effects are cutting edge.
The palace of the Grand Master has lasted one decade starting from 1570. The renaissance building has been both the master's office and resident. Today it's a presidential palace and meeting place of the House of Commons. The table is placed on the wall of the inside yard and remind us the vistas of the pope and the queen.
The interest of trick el dasca which is parallel to Liberty Street is that it was the only street in Valletta more where the nights have been allowed to fight a duel. Near, there are the toy museum and a small product palace, the Casa Roca Picola where paintings from the 15th to 17th centuries are exhibited. Nowadays, there are only 8,000 habitants living in the city and many moved out to the suburbs.
In Valletta, traveling by car is problematic because they drive on the left and it's hard to find a parking place. It's better if we visit the inner areas by walking or by a small horse carriage called Karrozzin. The star shape of St. Elma was built on the former place of the watch tower. Some scenes of the Oscar winning film Gladiator were shot here.
Inside we find a World War Museum converted from the command center of the British Air Defense. Besides others, General Eisenhower's jeep named husky is guarded here as well as three contemporary airplanes of the Maltese air force. One is even a little interested in military history can spend illuminating hours here.

In this episode of "California Travel Tips," Veronica Hill (http://www.CaliforniaTravelExpert.com) goes on one of LA's best hikes — the trek to Big Horn Mine and Miner Vincent's Cabin in the San Gabriel Mountains.
The trailhead to the cabin and mine is located at Vincent Gap on Highway 2 (Angeles Crest Highway), which connects metropolitan Los Angeles with the mountain village of Wrightwood. Be sure to buy a $5 adventure pass at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center before heading out, or you're likely be fined. You can also buy passes at Jensen's in Wrightwood, or Big 5 Sporting Goods stores.
Plan on a half day for the moderate 4-mile round trip hike to Big Horn Mine, which follows an old wagon trail around the north slope of Mount Baden-Powell. The hike to Vincent's Cabin is roughly 2 miles round trip. Be sure to bring along snacks, plenty of water, sunscreen, and some bug spray.
When you come upon the signs, you're going to want to stay right for the mine, or head downhill to the left for Vincent's Cabin. The cabin trail heads down into the valley, cutting through several types of terrain. During the hike, you'll see wildflowers, manzanita, Jeffrey pines, and even a lizard or two.
There's no cell service out here, so I always carry my GPS to make sure I'm going in the right direction. You can download directions with the EveryTrail app.
When you come upon these two downed trees you're going to cross the log and head down the trail. After walking nearly 25 minutes, the cabin comes into view. This little clearing was the home of prospector Charles Vincent Dougherty, a Civil War veteran who arrived in Los Angeles around 1868. On the run for murdering an Arizona claim jumper in self defense, he ended up hiding out here in San Gabriel mountains.
He built a one-room cabin with shingles hewn from nearby trees, and changed his name to Charles Tom Vincent. The fireplace was crafted from locally harvested stone, and Vincent placed two bunks on each side of the fireplace. He lived here in solitude for nearly 40 years. While you're here, you can check out some of Vincent's artifacts, including old tin cans, bottle caps and a frying pan. Be sure to leave everything as you found it so others can enjoy its historical significance.
In 1895, while hunting Big Horn Sheep, Vincent struck gold. Big Horn Mine produced 3,701 ounces of gold, 2,430 ounces of silver and 1,357 pounds of copper — generating roughly 100,000 dollars. Recently, the gold mine and its surrounding 277 acres was purchased by the U.S. Forest Service for $2 million.
According to the L.A. Times, there are still roughly 262,000 ounces of gold in the mine — which is worth more than $430 million today.
There are a few washed out areas and scrambles to get to the mine, but it's well worth the trek. The crumbling mine complex is quite impressive, with a maze of passages and tunnels totaling about 3,500 feet. If you peek inside, you can still see some of the ore cart rails, but most of the sites have been blocked off (and it's always a bad idea to enter an old mine shaft). The Bighorn Mine stamp mill is very rickety, but offers amazing views of the valley, Mount Baldy and Iron Mountain. This is a great place to stop for lunch before heading back down to Vincent Gap. We think this is one of LA's best hikes. Hope you do too!
Vincent lived in this valley until the age of 83, making yearly trips into LA to watch the baseball games. He'd bring along a sack of gold each time, placing it in a safe deposit box. Vincent died in 1926, and is buried at the National Cemetery in Los Angeles.

Several French monuments are also on the street, including the Arc de Triomphe and the Place de la Concorde. The name is French for Elysian Fields, the place of the blessed dead in Greek mythology. According to a much used description, the Champs-Élysées is la plus belle avenue du monde ("the most beautiful avenue in the world").
Visit Place de la Concorde, designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel in 1755 as a moat-skirted octagon between the Champs-Élysées to the west and the Tuileries Garden to the east. During the French Revolution the statue of Louis XV of France was torn down and the area renamed "Place de la Révolution". The new revolutionary government erected the guillotine in the square, and it was here that King Louis XVI was executed on 21 January 1793.
Follow along to Luxembourg Park with Sailboats in the Fountain with Street Artists and Street Performers in Paris, France. Stroll on the Seine River, with 37 bridges within Paris and dozens more spanning the river outside the city. Examples in Paris include the Pont Louis-Philippe and Pont Neuf, the latter of which dates back to 1607. Outside the city, examples include the Pont de Normandie, one of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, which links Le Havre to Honfleur.

Lisbon was the final stop of our European tour and we couldn't have chosen a better destination. The city immediately won us over with it's cheery pastel buildings, delicious fresh seafood, and it's unique mix of attractions. It also didn't hurt that we had clear blue skies the whole week we were there! Our first stop of the day was Sao Jorge Castle, which is an old Moorish fortification that sits on a hill overlooking Lisbon and the Tagus River. You can get some nice panoramic views of the city from here, and they also have peacocks roaming the grounds.
Miradouro das Portas do Sol is one of the many look out points in Lisbon that offers postcard-perfect views of the city. This particular terrace overlooks the Alfama district and it is always popular with tourists.
Carmo is a mediaeval convent that was ruined during the 1755 earthquake, and today it is used as an archaeological museum. It's a strange feeling walking down the ruined nave of the church and seeing blue skies above your head, but that's exactly what makes it worth a visit.
Another place to visit is Belem Tower. The tower was built on the banks of the Tagus River, and it was meant to act as both a defense system and a ceremonial gateway into Lisbon.
The Jeronimos Monastery is one of the most visited sights in Lisbon. It's one of the best examples of Late Gothic Manueline architecture, so have a close look at the intricate detailing when you visit.
A fun way to get around Lisbon's hilly streets is by riding the trams. There are different lines across the city, but #28 is the most popular one with visitors.
The Santa Justa lift is an elevator that connects the lower streets of Baixa with Carmo Square, and it is the only remaining vertical elevator in Lisbon. Though it is meant to serve a functional role, it is also quite popular with visitors who find the elevator a novel idea.
