Dental alveoli (singular alveolus) are sockets in the jaws in which the roots of teeth are held in the alveolar process of maxilla with the periodontal ligament. The lay term for dental alveoli is tooth sockets. A joint that connects the roots of the teeth and the alveolus is called gomphosis (plural gomphoses).Alveolar bone is the bone that surrounds the roots of the teeth forming bone sockets a.k.a. alveolus.
In mammals, tooth sockets are found in the maxilla, the premaxilla and the mandible.
Socket preservation or alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) is a procedure to reduce bone loss after tooth extraction to preserve the dental alveolus (tooth socket) in the alveolar bone. A platelet rich fibrin (PRF) membrane containing bone growth enhancing elements can be stitched over the wound or a graft material or scaffold is placed in the socket of an extracted tooth at the time of The socket is then directly closed with stitches or covered with a non-resorbable or resorbable membrane and sutured.
A dental extraction (also referred to as tooth extraction, exodontia, exodontics, or informally, tooth pulling) is the removal of teeth from the dental alveolus (socket) in the alveolar bone. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, but most commonly to remove teeth which have become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease or dental trauma, especially when they are associated with toothache. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) and may cause recurrent infections of the gum (pericoronitis). In orthodontics if the teeth are crowded, sound teeth may be extracted (often bicuspids) to create space so the rest of the teeth can be straightened. Tooth extraction is usually relatively straightforward, and the vast majo...

There are different types of forceps and elevators designed to precisely enter the area object of the intervention without damaging the periodontium and the dental alveolus. To extract a lateral incisor, we use central forceps. In this area, it would be impossible to use molar forceps. We focus on the neck of the tooth and go a bit below the gums for a stable grip of the forceps. Then we perform rotational movements on the tooth axis, elevating slightly toward the vestibular part of the tooth. In this way, the anatomy of the arch is preserved for any therapies involving prostheses. To extract a lower arch tooth, we use forceps like these. The method is the same: grip the neck of the tooth firmly and apply a rotational movement on the tooth axis to aid extraction. Elevators allow us to ...
A cleft alveolar ridge was treated with BoxTechnique and xenograft/allograft( Mineross-Mineross X by BioHorizons). The PDLLA membrane feature allow to shape and fit exactly to the cleft. At the first surgery we placed a Tapered Plus implant. Six months later we founded a nice alveolar ridge with a very nice quality of bone where we installed another implant. The primary stability and the bone and soft tissue allow us immediate function.
