Health care or healthcare is the maintenance or improvement of health via the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, illness, injury, and other physical and mental impairments in human beings. Health care is delivered by health professionals (providers or practitioners) in allied health professions, chiropractic, physicians, dentistry, midwifery, nursing, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, psychology, and other health professions. It includes the work done in providing primary care, secondary care, and tertiary care, as well as in public health.
Access to health care varies across countries, groups, and individuals, largely influenced by social and economic conditions as well as the health policies in place. Countries and jurisdictions have different policies and plans in relation to the personal and population-based health care goals within their societies. Health care systems are organizations established to meet the health needs of target populations. Their exact configuration varies between national and subnational entities. In some countries and jurisdictions, health care planning is distributed among market participants, whereas in others, planning occurs more centrally among governments or other coordinating bodies. In all cases, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), a well-functioning health care system requires a robust financing mechanism; a well-trained and adequately-paid workforce; reliable information on which to base decisions and policies; and well maintained health facilities and logistics to deliver quality medicines and technologies.
Climate change is a change in the statistical distribution of weather patterns when that change lasts for an extended period of time (i.e., decades to millions of years). Climate change may refer to a change in average weather conditions, or in the time variation of weather around longer-term average conditions (i.e., more or fewer extreme weather events). Climate change is caused by factors such as biotic processes, variations in solar radiation received by Earth, plate tectonics, and volcanic eruptions. Certain human activities have also been identified as significant causes of recent climate change, often referred to as "global warming".
Scientists actively work to understand past and future climate by using observations and theoretical models. A climate record—extending deep into the Earth's past—has been assembled, and continues to be built up, based on geological evidence from borehole temperature profiles, cores removed from deep accumulations of ice, floral and faunal records, glacial and periglacial processes, stable-isotope and other analyses of sediment layers, and records of past sea levels. More recent data are provided by the instrumental record. General circulation models, based on the physical sciences, are often used in theoretical approaches to match past climate data, make future projections, and link causes and effects in climate change.
Health is the level of functional or metabolic efficiency of a living organism. In humans it is the ability of individuals or communities to adapt and self-manage when facing physical, mental or social challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) defined health in its broader sense in its 1948 constitution as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." This definition has been subject to controversy, in particular as lacking operational value and because of the problem created by use of the word "complete" Other definitions have been proposed, among which a recent definition that correlates health and personal satisfaction. Classification systems such as the WHO Family of International Classifications, including the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), are commonly used to define and measure the components of health. Health is that balanced condition of the living organism in which the integral, harmonious performance of the vital functions tends to the preservation of the organism and the normal development of the individual.
Within the framework of the World Health Organization's (WHO) definition of health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity, reproductive health, or sexual health/hygiene, addresses the reproductive processes, functions and system at all stages of life. Reproductive health implies that people are able to have a responsible, satisfying and safer sex life and that they have the capability to reproduce and the freedom to decide if, when and how often to do so. One interpretation of this implies that men and women ought to be informed of and to have access to safe, effective, affordable and acceptable methods of birth control; also access to appropriate health care services of sexual, reproductive medicine and implementation of health education programs to stress the importance of women to go safely through pregnancy and childbirth could provide couples with the best chance of having a healthy infant.
Climate is the statistics (usually, mean or variability) of weather, usually over a 30-year interval. It is measured by assessing the patterns of variation in temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, precipitation, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological variables in a given region over long periods of time. Climate differs from weather, in that weather only describes the short-term conditions of these variables in a given region.
A region's climate is generated by the climate system, which has five components: atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere.
The climate of a location is affected by its latitude, terrain, and altitude, as well as nearby water bodies and their currents. Climates can be classified according to the average and the typical ranges of different variables, most commonly temperature and precipitation. The most commonly used classification scheme was Köppen climate classification originally developed by Wladimir Köppen. The Thornthwaite system, in use since 1948, incorporates evapotranspiration along with temperature and precipitation information and is used in studying biological diversity and the potential effects on it of climate changes. The Bergeron and Spatial Synoptic Classification systems focus on the origin of air masses that define the climate of a region.

Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas have some of the worst air quality in the United States in winter. The high level of air pollution found in the area (called the “Wasatch Front” area) increases the rates of heart attacks, stroke and sudden death. Just like the anti-tobacco campaigns of the late 20th century, doctors are sounding alarms about the health risks of poor air quality in our cities. Air pollution is now responsible for over 6.5 million premature deaths per year. Exposing people to harmful levels of air pollution increases the risks of heart disease, lung cancer, respiratory diseases and stroke. Children, the elderly and those alrea...

Dr. Snyder spoke about the impact of climate change on public health all over the world. Climate change or global warming has been discussed a lot over past several years and it is something all of us need to take seriously. Usually rapid and accelerated increases in global average surface water temperatures are caused by massive emissions of CO2. Air pollution toxins include ozone, NOx, and SOx, mercury, and airborne particulates. Water pollution includes ocean acidification, ocean warming, mercury, and rising sea levels which are damaging coral reefs—so far 40% of coral reefs have already disappeared. For several years pregnant women have been warned to not consume only a certain amount of fish from certain bodies of water, including the Great Lakes. Some problems we are seeing: In the...

With unchecked emissions of climate pollutants, there is a 50% probability for the planetary warming to cross the so-called dangerous threshold of 2C by 2050; and there is at least a 5% probability the warming can exceed a catastrophic 6C in about 80+ years. Veerabhadran Ramanathan speaks about climate change in March 2017, at a joint event with the Oxford Martin School and the Oxford Climate Research Network (OCRN) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veerabhadran_Ramanathan For the bottom three billion in rural areas, 2C would be enough to pose existential threats. With a 6C warming accompanied by 10 billion population, loss of bio diversity and species extinction, we should ask: whether civilisation as we know it can be extended beyond this century? Is there still time to avoid such catastro...

The aim of this webinar is to address and examine two important means of transmitting drug-resistant bacteria - food and air. It is well known that the health sector contributes to pharmaceutical pollution of the environment (which leads to AMR) through inappropriate prescription practices, poor waste management, and unhealthy food choices in hospitals. Moderated by Adela Maghear, Pharmaceuticals Policy Officer - HCWH Europe Speakers Melanie Giangreco, National Program Assistant for the Healthy Food in Health Care Program - Health Care Without Harm U.S. & Canada Johan Bengtsson-Palme, Researcher - University of Gothenburg, Sweden

October's Shell London lecture, delivered by Jane Plant (Imperial College, London) at the Geological Society on 10 October 2012. Approximately 160 000--200 000 years ago a biological change took place that would disrupt the natural equilibrium of the Earth, an equilibrium that had existed for the previous 4.5 ga. At that time Homo sapiens, evolved in east Africa and, from about 70,000 years ago, began to spread around the Earth. At first, as hunter-gatherers Homo sapiens made little impact on Earth systems, but from about 9000 years ago settled agriculture saw the first anthropogenic changes to chemicals in the environment. It is part of healthcare system’s role as health stewards to take responsible decisions to decrease their carbon footprint and mitigate climate change, whilst protecting human health.
