Every year on July 12, many Protestants, loyalists, and unionists in Northern Ireland celebrate by lighting huge bonfires and marching through the streets playing music and saluting the Queen. This year, about 50,000 people reportedly took part all over the region.
"The Twelfth" is a particularly contentious period in the heavily divided Protestant/Catholic city of Belfast. After decades of conflict in Northern Ireland known as the Troubles — a political and sectarian war that claimed about 3,600 lives — there are still many people on each side who feel oppressed by the other. Riots involving rock throwing, Molotov cocktails, and even gunfire often erupt on or around the Twelfth. Problems are particularly commonplace as marchers head through Ardoyne, a heavily Catholic and nationalist area surrounded by Protestant neighborhoods.
Though the city's youngest adults can barely remember the Troubles themselves, they're increasingly becoming radicalized. Poverty in Belfast is at a 10-year high; unemployment hovers near 8 percent, with about one in four 18- to 24-year-olds out of work. And so with few jobs and often inadequate education, young men are indoctrinated by paramilitary groups still left over from the fighting of the past.
VICE News went to the biggest bonfire in Northern Ireland, on Belfast's notorious Shankill Road, to watch Protestants and loyalists celebrate — and drink, and fight, and burn Irish flags.

With the recent 'yes' vote in the Republic of Ireland in favour of gay marriage and many other countries across Europe changing their laws to allow it, why is Northern Ireland different? We meet young gay people who say they're embarrassed and frustrated at their country's lack of progress and hear the strongly held arguments against change from the governing Democratic Unionist Party.

Meet the locals as the Overlander travels around Ireland - Complete Program
See the beauty and hospitality of Ireland, through the eyes of it's people.
Stories include:
In Dublin I interviewed Niamh Ni Mhir who works for Hostel World,a local IT business that rode the Celtic Tiger to become the biggest Hostel booking website online Niamh explains how Ireland has changed since my last visit, in the early 1990 s and also tells us what it is she likes about living in Dublin.
I interview Kathleen Moran about the Kilkenny Craft Centre and how Kilkenny established itself as Ireland's craft capital.
In Belfast I interviewed Sean McKernan, a photographer who in 1983 set up a photo exhibition called Belfast Exposed, featuring a lot of images from the height of the troubles.
On the Aran Islands I interviewed Teresa Millane, an old style (Sean Nos) singer.
In Galway I interviewed actor Diarmuid de Faoite about the flourishing arts scene.
The small fishing Village of Dingle on the West Coast of Ireland is home to a friendly Dolphin called Fungi, who seems to prefer the company of humans to his own kind.
In Doolin I interviewed Banjo player, Kevin Griffin about why Doolin has become the traditional music capital of Ireland.
Sean now runs an multifunction arts centre called BX Arts.
Sean discusses how Belfast has changed since the 1997 ceasefire.
In Cork I try and trace my Irish ancestors (O'Shea), and look at the modern day immigration of Polish workers to Ireland.
For my final Irish story, I visit Cahersiveen where there are some Stone Forts that may well been the home of my Shea ancestors.

20 things to do in Belfast Travel Guide | Top Attractions Travel Video Transcript:
Well hello from Northern Ireland. This week we are traveling around Belfast and we only have three days in the capital so we're going to try and cover as much ground as we possibly can and show you some of the highlights.
The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service, and it was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. The Titanic Belfast exhibition, tells the stories of the Titanic's ill-fated maiden voyage in 1912 and it is one of the top attractions in the city.
Right now we're on board the SS Nomadic, the little sister of the Titanic, and we're going to take a full tour of the ship.
The SS Nomadic was a steamship built as a tender to the RMS Titanic. It was her job to ferry passengers, baggage, and supplies to and from the shore.
Next up we are heading inside St George's Market, which we've been told is more than just a farmer's market. Apparently, aside from buying food there you can catch some live shows, go shopping for vintage items, jewelry. So we're going to head inside and see what it is like. And it is only open on the weekends.
Queen's University Belfast is one of the oldest universities in the United Kingdom. It also happens to have a really nice campus, so we decided to take a little stroll.
The Botanic Gardens first opened as a private garden in 1828, and for many years the public only had access on Sundays. Today anyone can visit and it's a beautiful place to walk around, especially if you luck out with sunshine.
So if you take a look at my pint over here you might be thinking I'm having Guinness. It does look a lot like Guinness but in fact it is Belfast Black. And I have to say it tastes just as good if not better.
For 360 degree views of Belfast, we recommend going to Victoria Square Shopping Centre, and riding the elevator up to the dome. This will give you a nice bird's eye view of Belfast.
So to wrap things up here in Belfast I'm going to mention three things I really liked about the city.
First off it is highly affordable. One of the best bargains you can get is a day pass for the bus. It's really cheap and it allows you to travel anywhere in the city unlimited usage.
Secondly, this is a very friendly city. Almost anytime we brought out a map we had a local coming up to offer help. And we just found that whenever we took taxi rides or were in restaurants locals really went the extra distance to make us feel welcome here.
And lastly this is a very walk-able city. Most of the attractions are clustered in the downtown area and you can reach most of them by foot.
And that's it for our quick trip to Belfast! As you can probably see, our visit was fairly short so we didn't get to do it all. If you have any suggestions of other sights and attractions worth checking out around Belfast, feel free to share those in the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Northern Ireland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Irish culture, Irish arts, Irish foods, Irish religion, Irish cuisine and Irish people.

"Fuck a Pope." Tension between the Protestants and Catholics are high in Belfast, Ireland. Often described as the European capitol of terrorism, troubles continue years after the Good Friday peace agreement.
VICE headed over to Belfast, in the lead up to this year's Twelfth parade, and tensions were running higher than any period in recent memory: It was only a few months since a 25-year-old Catholic police officer was murdered by dissident republicans (to dissuade others from joining the force) and just weeks after altercations between nationalists and unionists in east Belfast ended in riots and multiple shootings, including a cameraman. What better time to explore Belfast and marinate in the divisive hate?

Blarney Castle - Located in County Cork This historic castle is known for its "Blarney Stone." Tradition is that if the Blarney Stone is kissed, one will be blessed with great eloquence, better known as "the gift of the gab." One kisses the stone by lying back and being held by an employee of the castle. Photographers are there to capture the moment!
Cliffs of Moher - Located in County Clare One of Ireland's biggest and most visited tourist attractions. The Cliffs are 230 meters in height and tower over the Atlantic Ocean. This attraction, whilst beautiful in the Summer, can be a bit of a tourist trap. If you intend to take your own transport, the over-priced car park is your only option (since the road is too narrow to park on) and to purchase your 'pay-and-display' parking ticket, you will need to go all the way through the gift shop (on the opposite side of the road), before returning to place it in your car.
Kilkenny - One of Ireland's favourite tourist spots, this Medieval Capital just 1 hour 40 minutes train out of Dublin City is a must see. Its beautiful buildings and of course imposing Norman Castle - not to mention the numerous festivals including the Arts Festival and Rhythm and Roots Festival - make Kilkenny a most desirable location.
Co. Donegal - An amazing area to see if you have your own transport, as bus services can be fairly limited. This part of the country is very traditional and you can expect to see plenty of low stone walls, thatched roof houses, rugged hills, cliffs and golden sand beaches. Best visited during Spring or Summer, there are plenty of hills walks and photo opportunities waiting to be discovered.

==========
Bus Tours - For travellers wishing to experience Ireland on a budget, there are a variety of inexpensive bus tours in almost every part of the country. These tours can range from hop-on hop-off busses in major cities such as Dublin and Cork to 5-day trips through some of the most scenic parts of the country. The bus drivers/guides are generally well informed about Irish history and enjoy sharing local legends and songs with anyone happy to 'lend and ear'.

Tuscany by Car & Ireland by Car: Travel Guides with GPS

Welcome to this video about our travel guides! We publish two guides, one about Tuscany and one about Ireland.
Our guides are different – and we think a lot better – than other travel guides, and here are two reasons why.
First, each of our guides is comprehensive – well over 1,000 pages on an iPad or Kindle Fire – so you get complete information for your trip. For example, our guide to Tuscany not only includes complete coverage of Florence and Chianti, but also contains thorough coverage of the Central hilltop towns region and Maremma, two of our favorite locations in Tuscany.
Likewise, in our guide to Ireland we include many locations in Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland is an up-and-coming travel destination which is largely ignored by many other travel guides.
Second, we believe that the best way to explore these wonderful destinations is by car. Many locations within Tuscany, for example, are simply not accessible by train and with so much to see and do, why be stuck in a tour bus with strangers on a schedule out of your control? The roads in Europe are terrific and the smaller roads that crisscross Tuscany are a joy to drive.
The problem comes when you find yourself hopelessly lost. Navigating in a foreign land can be a real challenge and lead to many frustrations. Each of our books comes – at no additional charge – with a separate, downloadable set of GPS coordinates that can be easily loaded on your separate Garmin or tom-tom GPS device. When you arrive at your destination in Tuscany or Ireland, simply power on your GPS device, select one of the destinations in our books, and travel confidently to that destination.
Available through Amazon's Kindle Store and Apple iTunes.

Together with Kristin Addis (www.bemytravelmuse.com) I went on a road trip exploring Northern Ireland and all the Game of Thrones shooting locations which have been used in the show by HBO. We went on our very own Game of Thrones Tour based on research with the help of the local Tourism Board and some of the Tour operators.
With this we show you all the Game of Thrones spots which actually exist in real life and can be explored while traveling through Northern Ireland.
Supported by our local experts Phil and James who have been involved in the filming from the first seasons we got the chance to see why the production company decided to use Northern Ireland as their main filming spot.
If you are interested in a Game of Thrones Tour in Northern Ireland make sure to checkout the related website of Ireland linked at the beginning where you'll find all information needed.

Next time you visit Northern Ireland, take a few hours to tour Mount Stewart Gardens House.
Located just a few miles from Newtownards, this 100-acre state has had several prominent owners through the decades; it was the home of the Marquesses of Londonderry until the house was given to the National Trust in the 1970s. The house, constructed between 1820 and 1839, looks quite intimidating with its columns and stone construction, but its exterior has been softened by the addition of rare plants, rippling lakes, and walking paths. Most Mount Stewart Gardens House sightseeing involves taking a quiet stroll through its sprawling gardens, spending time with your loved ones, and marveling at the beauty of nature.

Travel video about destination Ireland.
Ireland is one of Europe’s most green and mysterious islands and everyone who visits this isolated island in the Atlantic Ocean is given a very warm welcome. Dublin is the capital of the Irish Republic and it is a city of musicians, poets and dreamers, as well as being a financial centre. Its many old buildings indicate its long and dramatic past. It was founded by the Vikings within a wonderful valley where the River Liffey flows into the Atlantic Ocean. After the Vikings, the Normans conquered the city and ruled over it for seven hundred years and under King Henry The Eighth Dublin became the capital of what was then a British colony. South west of Dublin is Kildare, the heart of Ireland’s horse racing. In 1902 the Irish national stud, Tully House, was founded there. Rich and eccentric Scottish brewery heir, Colonel William Hall-Walker, had the idea of a creating unique horse breeding scheme that would be based upon astrological calculation. The Wicklow Mountains are a natural paradise of mountains, swamps and lakes, beautiful valleys and a fascinating mountain landscape to the south of Dublin. Jerpoint Abbey near Thomastown dates back to the twelfth century and is one of the most beautiful Cistercian ruins in Ireland. It was founded in around 1160 by Donal Mac Gillapatrick, the King Of Ossory. The Cistercians built the monastery in characteristic style and one of the stone sarcophaguses is said to contain the bones of Holy Nicolas who was buried there by the Crusaders. Although much of it has remained unspoiled, Ireland has undergone much change. It is a land of great natural beauty, healthy commercial success and excellent hospitality: a wild green island set in the wild Atlantic Ocean!

Sights in Northern Ireland
Ulster American Folk Park
----------------------------------------------
In the 18th and 19th centuries thousands of Ulster people left their homes to forge a new life across the Atlantic; 200,000 emigrated in the 18th century alone. Their story is told here at one of Ireland's best museums, which features a sprawling outdoor history park , where exhibits are split into Old World and New World areas and come alive through reenactments.
The park is 8km northwest of Omagh off the A5. Last admission is 1½ hours before closing.
City Hall
--------------------
Belfast's classical Renaissance-style City Hall was built in fine, white Portland stone in 1906. Highlights of the free, 45-minute guided tour include the sumptuous, wedding-cake Italian marble and colourful stained glass of the entrance hall and rotunda; an opportunity to sit on the mayor's throne in the council chamber; and the idiosyncratic portraits of past lord mayors. Each is allowed to choose his or her own artist and the variations in personal style are intriguing.
The Industrial Revolution transformed Belfast in the 19th century. The city's rapid rise to muck-and-brass prosperity manifested in the extravagance of the building, which was paid for with the gas supply company's profits. The hall is fronted by a statue of a rather dour 'we are not amused' Queen Victoria . The bronze figures on either side of her symbolise the textile and shipbuilding industries. The child at the back represents education.
Ulster Museum
---------------------------
You could spend hours browsing this state-of-the-art museum, but if you're pressed for time don't miss the Armada Room , with artefacts retrieved from the 1588 wreck of the Spanish galleon Girona; the Egyptian Room , with Princess Takabuti, a 2500-year-old Egyptian mummy unwrapped in Belfast in 1835; and the Early Peoples Gallery , with the bronze Bann Disc, a superb example of Celtic design from the Iron Age.
Free tours (10 people maximum; first-come, first served) run at 2.30pm Tuesday to Friday and 1.30pm Sunday.
Crown Liquor Saloon
================
There are not too many historical monuments that you can enjoy while savouring a pint of beer, but the National Trust's Crown Liquor Saloon is one of them. Belfast's most famous bar was refurbished by Patrick Flanagan in the late 19th century and displays Victorian decorative flamboyance at its best (he was looking to pull in a posh clientele from the newfangled train station and Grand Opera House across the street).
Castle Coole
---------------------------
The 600 hectares of landscaped grounds contain a lake that is home to the UK's only nonmigratory colony of greylag geese. You can also join a tour of the grand 18th-century house .
The estate is 2.5km southeast of Enniskillen. You can easily walk there from Enniskillen town centre in 30 minutes – beyond Dunnes Stores, fork left on Tempo Rd and keep going straight along Castlecoole Rd.
When King George IV visited Ireland in 1821, the second Earl of Belmore had a state bedroom specially prepared at Castle Coole in anticipation of the monarch's visit. The king, however, was more interested in dallying with his mistress at Slane Castle and never turned up. The bedroom, draped in red silk and decorated with paintings depicting A Rake's Progress (the earl's sniffy riposte to the king's extramarital shenanigans), is one of the highlights of the one-hour guided tour.
Navan Fort
-------------------------
Perched atop a drumlin, Ulster's most important archaeological site is linked in legend with the tales of Cúchulainn and named as capital of Ulster and the seat of the legendary Knights of the Red Branch. Exhibits at the outstanding Navan Centre place the fort in its historical context, and display a re-creation of an Iron Age settlement.
It's a 3km walk west of Armagh; alternatively, take bus 73 (up to nine daily Monday to Friday).
Giant’s Causeway
---------------------------------
This spectacular rock formation – Northern Ireland's only Unesco World Heritage site – is one of Ireland's most impressive and atmospheric landscape features, a vast expanse of regular, closely packed, hexagonal stone columns looking for all the world like the handiwork of giants. The phenomenon is explained in the Giant's Causeway Visitor Experience , a spectacular new ecofriendly building half-hidden in a hillside above the sea.
Derry's City Walls
---------------------------------
The best way to get a feel for Derry's layout and history is to walk the 1.5km circumference of the city's walls.

================

Ireland and Northern Ireland have long had the raw ingredients for a world-class cuisine—icy northern waters yielding fresh fish and shellfish, lush green grass for dairy herds, hillside wild herbs for free-ranging lambs, and traditional skills such as butchering, bread making, and whiskey distilling.
Farmhouse Cheese
==============
Cheese making dates back to the days of the monasteries here but nearly died out. It helped get the artisanal food movement going when it was reestablished in the mid-1970s by the makers of Milleens and Coolea cheese. Sheridans Cheesemongers, with shops in Dublin, Galway, and Kells, features over 50 Irish cheeses in a variety of styles from more than 30 artisan producers in the north and south. Sample before buying or head to the wine bar above the Galway shop for tasting platters to share.
Seafood
========
The bounty of the sea is celebrated in festivals and on menus across the island. One of the biggest festivals is the Galway Oyster and Seafood Festival at the end of September. Alternatively, sample Irish bivalves at renowned oyster bars in the Saddle Room at the Shelbourne Dublin and at Mourne Seafood’s Dublin and Belfast locations, serving oysters from County Donegal and County Down, Northern Ireland. Learn the secrets of the Mourne Seafood chefs in classes at the Belfast Cookery School.
Smoked Salmon
===============
reland's smoked salmon deserves its own category. Salmon has been eaten in Ireland since prehistoric times and ties into Celtic mythology—the Salmon of Knowledge was considered the wisest of creatures. Smokehouses around the island smoke salmon with oak, beech, or turf, and restaurants typically serve it as an appetizer with brown bread. Oysters Restaurant in Strabane, Northern Ireland, presents a creative twist with pistachio-crusted, peat-smoked Irish salmon with martini and chive velouté.
Lamb
=======
The Irish take pride in lamb from specific regions—Connemara Hill lamb even has geographical protection from the European Union. Mary Gleeson of Gleeson’s Townhouse & Restaraunt, Roscommon, says it’s the sweet, grass-reared Roscommon lamb that makes her stew so tasty and admired. She cooks it in fresh thyme and rosemary-flavored broth with onions, carrots, celery, and potatoes. The Roscommon Lamb Festival in May offers a chance to taste local lamb cooked a variety of ways.
Traditional Breads
==============
Soul-sustaining bread is a staple for the Irish, notably soda bread with a cross cut into the top. The soda bread master is Peter Ward of Country Choice in Nenagh—heaps of his crusty round loaves are gone before day’s end. The northern specialty is oatcakes, with artisan baker Robert Ditty setting the standard at Ditty’s Home Bakery & Coffee Shop in Castledawson and Magherafelt, Northern Ireland. The Waterford blaa, a soft white roll dating to the 17th century, now has EU protected status. Third-generation bakers Michael and Dermot Walsh make fluffy blaas at M&D; Bakery in Waterford City.
Teatime
=========
Ireland drinks more tea per capita than any other place in the world except for Turkey. There are charming tearooms all over Ireland and Northern Ireland, as well as luxury hotels offering elegant high tea.

Euro 2016: UEFA to give NI fans more tickets after allocation complaints

...
UEFA has agreed to give more Euro 2016 tickets to Northern Ireland fans after complaints about the original allocation process, a Stormont committee has heard.
The chief executive of the Irish Football Association (IFA), Patrick Nelson, is giving evidence to the DCAL committee.
He said 93 more tickets will be allocated for the Germany game.
There will also be an extra 505 tickets for the Ukraine match.
This is on top of the extra 1,276 tickets announced last week for the Poland game. Some lifelong supporters missed out when UEFA allocated the tickets last week.
Mr Nelson said the IFA had been pressing for more tickets for Northern Ireland fans, and said the new tickets will be "a complete selection of categories", adding "some of them are going to be more expensive but some are going to be cheaper as well".
'Highest level'
He also told the committee that the IFA had previously agreed a priority allocation system that meant "anyone with top priority - 17 points or more should have got a ticket," but there had been "quite a small, inadvertent error by UEFA" that meant people "well in excess of 17 points" did not get tickets.
He said once the problem had been noticed they contacted UEFA "at the highest level" and "within three hours agreed to supply enough tickets to address the immediate matter".
The IFA president Jim Shaw said the allocation process was by an automated computer system, adding: "In a different world, we would have been allocating tickets from top to bottom probably ourselves and would have had total control.
"We've made a good recovery, I think, but they (UEFA) will insist on all ticketing coming from that system."
Last Wednesday, the IFA announced a portal would be created for Northern Ireland supporters to apply for extra tickets.
The portal, for the match against Poland, is open to supporters on a priority list who were were informed they had missed out on Tuesday.
The Department of Culture, Leisure and Arts (DCAL) committee hearing is available to watch on Stormont Live here.
wn.com/Euro 2016 Uefa To Give Ni Fans More Tickets After Allocation Complaints

A movie type documentary on Northern Ireland during the troubles. It started in 1968 and lasted at 1998 - Nearly 4 Decades.
This shows the grim reality of the soldiers' experience on a day to day basis - how they felt, how they reacted, what their point of view was and how the typical media likes to twist events.
The Troubles is the common name for the ethno-nationalist conflict in Northern Ireland that spilled over at various times into parts of the Republic of Ireland, England and mainland Europe. The conflict began in the late 1960s and is deemed by many to have ended with the Belfast "Good Friday" Agreement of 1998, although there has been sporadic violence since then. Internationally, it is also commonly called the Northern Ireland conflict and has been described as a war.
The conflict in Northern Ireland during the late 20th century is known as the Troubles. Over 3,600 people were killed and thousands more injured.
Over the course of three decades, violence on the streets of Northern Ireland was commonplace and spilled over into Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and as far afield as Gibraltar.
Several attempts to find a political solution failed until the Good Friday Agreement, which restored self-government to Northern Ireland and brought an end to the Troubles.
