http://www.euronews.com/ Thailand evokes images of endless, sandy beaches but there is a lot more to this South East Asian country. In the first edition of our four part series 'Thai Life', we take a look at the kingdom's business spirit. To find out why Thailand is such a popular investment market, euronews headed to its capital, Bangkok.
With a population of around 10 million, it can sometimes feel like all the city's inhabitants are on the streets at once. Bangkok is at the heart of the Thai economy with 90% of the country's export trade taking place in the capital. The Asian Kingdom is also becoming an evermore attractive production location for foreign businesses, which are attracted by its stable infrastructure and tax incentives.
Stiebel Eltron, a housing technology manufacturer is one of the 500 German companies to start up operations in Thailand.
It learned early on that doing business 'Thai style' requires a great deal of cultural awareness and tact; something the company's Export Manager, Holger Palla knows all too well:
"In Germany you can raise your voice (literally bang your fist on the table) and speak more openly and direct. Maybe even a little too loud and direct. In Thailand you can't do that at all. You have to be careful not to embarrass other people -- they shouldn't lose face so you have to show respect and proceed more subtly."
Yupa Tassri, General Manager at Siebel Eltron takes care of the staff's needs, bridging any cultural divides:
"In Thai most people respect Buddha, so the Germans will never understand how we respect him.
"My main challenge is to mix and match between Thai and German mindsets, to make sure that they understand each other and work together in harmony."
Teamwork plays a vital role, ensuring the working day runs smoothly, as Roland Hoehn, Asian Pacific Director at Siebel Eltron explains:
"Thai's like to work in groups. They want to have Sanuuk once in a while. Sanuuk is probably best translated as fun and is simply a part of the Thai culture. If they aren't having fun, they leave the company. So harmony and fun are important."
For foreign companies, the benefits of working in Thailand, seem to outweigh concerns voiced by some businesses over bureaucracy and a lack of qualified labour.
John Svengren, the Executive Director of the European Asean Business Centre believes the key to doing business successfully in Thailand is taking the time to build bonds with colleagues:
"Relationships mean a lot more for one thing. You don't come to an Asian country and do business on the first day. You need to have relationships, particularly if you're in joint venture operations with Thai partnerships. It can take years to develop confidence and trust."
This is not only true for the industrial sector but also for tourism, another important area for foreign investors, especially European.
This year alone, more than 20 million visitors are expected, making up around 6% of the nation's total economy.
The tourism industry has been trying to attract new target groups and green tourism is becoming increasingly popular. At Karon beach in Phuket, a Swiss run hotel was the first on the island to receive the Green Globe certificate for sustainability.
The hotel's General Manager at the Mövenpick resort, Hansreudi Frutiger talks to euronews about his accomplishment:
"We began with the Green Globe one year ago. We wanted to explain to our Thai employees what this means to us; that we want to help the world stay as it was and is. We've a small garden where we grow tomatoes and cucumbers alongside various Thai herbs and spices which our chefs use in our kitchen's dishes."
Thailand is a country of contrast. While it is finding success putting itself on the world business map - tradition and heritage remain an integral part of life.

But outside Thailand there is greater concern that the long term prospects for the economy are not good, as exports and GDP growth continue to slip. Thailand is a newly industrialized country. Its economy is heavily export-dependent, with exports accounting for more than two-thirds of its gross domestic product (GDP). In 2012, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand had a GDP of THB11.375 trillion (USD366 billion). The Thai economy grew by 6.5 percent, with a headline inflation rate of 3.02 percent and an account surplus of 0.7 percent of the country's GDP. In 2013, the Thai economy is expected to grow in the range of 3.8-4.3 percent. During the first half of 2013 (Q1-Q2/2013), the Thai economy grew by 4.1 percent (YoY). After seasonally adjusted, however, the Thai GDP contracted by 1.7 percent and 0.3 percent in the first and the second quarters of 2013, respectively. Given a contraction in two consecutive quarters, technically speaking, the Thai economy is now in recession.
The industrial and service sectors are the main sectors in the Thai gross domestic product, with the former accounting for 39.2 percent of GDP. Thailand's agricultural sector produces 8.4 percent of the GDP – lower than the trade and logistics and communication sectors, which account for 13.4 percent and 9.8 percent of GDP respectively. The construction and mining sector adds 4.3 percent to the country’s gross domestic product. Other service sectors (including the financial, education and hotel and restaurant sectors) account for 24.9 percent of the country's GDP. Telecommunications and trade in services are emerging as centers of industrial expansion and economic competitiveness.

This is a flight review of our Thai Airways Economy Class flight from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) onboard a Thai Airways Boeing 777 passenger aircraft. Our flight report begins at Copenhagen Central Station where we are catching the Øresund train to Copenhagen Airport´s Terminal 3 where we arrive and checkin for our Thai Airways flight to Bangkok Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport ). Once we have checked in for our Thai Airways flight we take the viewer on a walk around Copenhagen Airport together with us. The trip report then continues where we re boarding our Thai Airways flight. The viewer walks with us through the Business Class and Economy Class cabins, right to the end of the aircraft where our two seater window seat area is located. After viewing the pushback, taxing and takeoff of our Thai Airways Boeing 777 we proceed to present this aircraft's Economy class cabin. We cover topics such as the inflight blanket and pillow, the inflight entertainment system, the leg room at our seats, the seat tray, the USB charging device for smartphones and iPads etc. Once the flight is underway we are served some peanuts and a drink (this in flight service is free of charge throughout the flight). Following our drink we present our in flight meal (dinner) to the viewer. Once we have eaten the viewer is also given a tour of the aircraft's lavatory and rear galley. Once morning arrives and we begin to get closer to Bangkok we are once again woken by the crew and given a nice warm facecloth which is followed up by the serving of breakfast. The breakfast in-flight meal is then also presented to the viewer. After breakfast the aircraft begins final approach to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and eventually lands and taxis to our parking place. We then disembark onto the tarmac and are driven to the airport terminal in buses.
We had a comfortable and enjoyable flight onboard this Thai Airways Boeing 777 flying from Copenhagen, Denmark to Bangkok, Thailand. The crew was friendly, professional and attentive. The cabin was clean and had an airy interior. Legroom was the usual area provided in economy class on long haul flights. All inflight drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic where available Ad-libitum and free of charge. This complimentary meals and drinks are a service that we appreciate and do hope Thai Airways will continue providing. We would fly with Thai Airways on this route at any time and at the time of writing would highly recommend this airline for long haul flights to and from Bangkok, Thailand...

The economy of Thailand is a newly industrialized economy. It is a heavily export-dependent economy, with exports accounting for more than two thirds of gross domestic product (GDP).
Recently, Thailand experienced GDP growth by 7.8% in 2010 making it one of the fastest growing economies in Asia and the fastest growing economy in South East Asia. The country has a GDP of 9.5 trillion Baht, or US$584 billion (PPP) making it the 24th largest economy in the world. This classifies Thailand as the second largest economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia. Despite this, Thailand ranks midway in the wealth spread in Southeast Asia as it is the 4th richest nation by GDP per capita, after Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia. Thailand's nominal economic output as of June 2010 is $313.8 billion USD, while holding some $172 billion in foreign exchange assets which ranks 11th in world. Thailand has strong automobile industry which grew by 63% in 2010 with 1.6 million cars produced ranking it as 13th in the motor vehicle producing countries in the world. Experts predict that by the year 2015 Thailand will be one of the top 10 motor vehicle producing countries in the world.

This is a flight review of our Thai Airways Economy Class flight from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) onboard a Thai Airways Boeing 777 passenger aircraft. Our flight report begins at Copenhagen Central Station where we are catching the Øresund train to Copenhagen Airport´s Terminal 3 where we arrive and checkin for our Thai Airways flight to Bangkok Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport ). Once we have checked in for our Thai Airways flight we take the viewer on a walk around Copenhagen Airport together with us. The trip report then continues where we re boarding our Thai Airways flight. The viewer walks with us through the Business Class and Economy Class cabins, right to the end of the aircraft where our two seater window seat area is located. After viewing the pushback, taxing and takeoff of our Thai Airways Boeing 777 we proceed to present this aircraft's Economy class cabin. We cover topics such as the inflight blanket and pillow, the inflight entertainment system, the leg room at our seats, the seat tray, the USB charging device for smartphones and iPads etc. Once the flight is underway we are served some peanuts and a drink (this in flight service is free of charge throughout the flight). Following our drink we present our in flight meal (dinner) to the viewer. Once we have eaten the viewer is also given a tour of the aircraft's lavatory and rear galley. Once morning arrives and we begin to get closer to Bangkok we are once again woken by the crew and given a nice warm facecloth which is followed up by the serving of breakfast. The breakfast in-flight meal is then also presented to the viewer. After breakfast the aircraft begins final approach to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and eventually lands and taxis to our parking place. We then disembark onto the tarmac and are driven to the airport terminal in buses. We had a comfortable and enjoyable flight onboard this Thai Airways Boeing 777 flying from Copenhagen, Denmark to Bangkok, Thailand. The crew was friendly, professional and attentive. The cabin was clean and had an airy interior. Legroom was the usual area provided in economy class on long haul flights. All inflight drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic where available Ad-libitum and free of charge. This complimentary meals and drinks are a service that we appreciate and do hope Thai Airways will continue providing. We would fly with Thai Airways on this route at any time and at the time of writing would highly recommend this airline for long haul flights to and from Bangkok, Thailand... !สมัครสมาชิก These are my pictures from TG794. Everything was amazing about the flight. I'm sorry about the grainy pictures- my camera does really badly with anything that's even slightly dark. I was seated in Premium Economy, in seat 33A. The flight attendants were really nice, the food was great (there were 2 meals and a snack, although I only photographed one) and the seat was supremely comfortable. Unfortunately, no one will ever be able to fly Thai's premium economy ever again, because Thai has since removed their entire A340-500 fleet from service, and with it their premium economy class. There is also no more TG794/795 across the Pacific Ocean, as it's now serviced as TG692/693 with a 777-300ER with a stop in Seoul, which means there are no longer any direct flights from Thailand to the US. The Thai government is considering raising the amount of private investment through a series of government infrastructure projects planned for the next seven years. But outside Thailand there is greater concern that the long term prospects for the economy are not good, as exports and GDP growth continue to slip. Thailand is a newly industrialized country. Its economy is heavily export-dependent, with exports accounting for more than two-thirds of its gross domestic product (GDP). In 2012, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand had a GDP of THB11.375 trillion (USD366 billion). The Thai economy grew by 6.5 percent, with a headline inflation rate of 3.02 percent and an account surplus of 0.7 percent of the country's GDP. In 2013, the Thai economy is expected to grow in the range of 3.8-4.3 percent. During the first half of 2013 (Q1-Q2/2013), the Thai economy grew by 4.1 percent (YoY). After seasonally adjusted, however, the Thai GDP contracted by 1.7 percent and 0.3 percent in the first and the second quarters of 2013, respectively. Given a contraction... -

In the aftermath of the 1997 Asian economic crisis the philosophy of Sufficiency Economy has risen to prominence in national discourse in Thailand inspired, in particular, by its association with His Majesty King Bhumbol Adulyadej. Sufficiency Economy has been hailed by its proponents as an antidote to the excesses of global capitalism, while it has been reviled by opponents as unrealistic utopianism. Others interpret Sufficiency Economy as a form of Buddhist Economics, an expression of the values and principles of Thailand's dominant religion, although critics argue that "Buddhist Economics" is a contradiction in terms. This lecture proposes to to examine and problematize both "Buddhist Economics," and "Sufficiency Economy." -

In the first edition of our four part series 'Thai Life', we take a look at the kingdom's business spirit. To find out why Thailand is such a popular investment market, euronews headed to its capital, Bangkok.
With a population of around 10 million, it can sometimes feel like all the city's inhabitants are on the streets at once. Bangkok is at the heart of the Thai economy with 90% of the country's export trade taking place in the capital. The Asian Kingdom is also becoming an evermore attractive production location for foreign businesses, which are attracted by its stable infrastructure and tax incentives.
Stiebel Eltron, a housing technology manufacturer is one of the 500 German companies to start up operations in Thailand.
It learned early on that doing business 'Thai style' requires a great deal of cultural awareness and tact; something the company's Export Manager, Holger Palla knows all too well:
"In Germany you can raise your voice (literally bang your fist on the table) and speak more openly and direct. Maybe even a little too loud and direct. In Thailand you can't do that at all. You have to be careful not to embarrass other people -- they shouldn't lose face so you have to show respect and proceed more subtly."
Yupa Tassri, General Manager at Siebel Eltron takes care of the staff's needs, bridging any cultural divides:
"In Thai most people respect Buddha, so the Germans will never understand how we respect him.
"My main challenge is to mix and match between Thai and German mindsets, to make sure that they understand each other and work together in harmony."
Teamwork plays a vital role, ensuring the working day runs smoothly, as Roland Hoehn, Asian Pacific Director at Siebel Eltron explains:
"Thai's like to work in groups. They want to have Sanuuk once in a while. Sanuuk is probably best translated as fun and is simply a part of the Thai culture. If they aren't having fun, they leave the company. So harmony and fun are important."
For foreign companies, the benefits of working in Thailand, seem to outweigh concerns voiced by some businesses over bureaucracy and a lack of qualified labour.
John Svengren, the Executive Director of the European Asean Business Centre believes the key to doing business successfully in Thailand is taking the time to build bonds with colleagues:
"Relationships mean a lot more for one thing. You don't come to an Asian country and do business on the first day. You need to have relationships, particularly if you're in joint venture operations with Thai partnerships. It can take years to develop confidence and trust."
This is not only true for the industrial sector but also for tourism, another important area for foreign investors, especially European.
This year alone, more than 20 million visitors are expected, making up around 6% of the nation's total economy.
The tourism industry has been trying to attract new target groups and green tourism is becoming increasingly popular. At Karon beach in Phuket, a Swiss run hotel was the first on the island to receive the Green Globe certificate for sustainability.
The hotel's General Manager at the Mövenpick resort, Hansreudi Frutiger talks to euronews about his accomplishment:
"We began with the Green Globe one year ago. We wanted to explain to our Thai employees what this means to us; that we want to help the world stay as it was and is. We've a small garden where we grow tomatoes and cucumbers alongside various Thai herbs and spices which our chefs use in our kitchen's dishes."
Thailand is a country of contrast. While it is finding success putting itself on the world business map - tradition and heritage remain an integral part of life.

Thailand is a newly industrialized country. Its economy is heavily export-dependent, with exports accounting for more than two-thirds of its gross domestic product (GDP). In 2012, according to the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board, Thailand had a GDP of THB11.375 trillion (USD366 billion). The Thai economy grew by 6.5 percent, with a headline inflation rate of 3.02 percent and an account surplus of 0.7 percent of the country's GDP. In 2013, the Thai economy is expected to grow in the range of 3.8-4.3 percent. During the first half of 2013 (Q1-Q2/2013), the Thai economy grew by 4.1 percent (YoY). After seasonally adjusted, however, the Thai GDP contracted by 1.7 percent and 0.3 percent in the first and the second quarters of 2013, respectively. Given a contraction in two consecutive quarters, technically speaking, the Thai economy is now in recession.
The industrial and service sectors are the main sectors in the Thai gross domestic product, with the former accounting for 39.2 percent of GDP. Thailand's agricultural sector produces 8.4 percent of the GDP – lower than the trade and logistics and communication sectors, which account for 13.4 percent and 9.8 percent of GDP respectively. The construction and mining sector adds 4.3 percent to the country’s gross domestic product. Other service sectors (including the financial, education and hotel and restaurant sectors) account for 24.9 percent of the country's GDP. Telecommunications and trade in services are emerging as centers of industrial expansion and economic competitiveness.

This is a flight review of our Thai Airways Economy Class flight from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) onboard a Thai Airways Boeing 777 passenger aircraft. Our flight report begins at Copenhagen Central Station where we are catching the Øresund train to Copenhagen Airport´s Terminal 3 where we arrive and checkin for our Thai Airways flight to Bangkok Airport (Suvarnabhumi Airport ). Once we have checked in for our Thai Airways flight we take the viewer on a walk around Copenhagen Airport together with us. The trip report then continues where we re boarding our Thai Airways flight. The viewer walks with us through the Business Class and Economy Class cabins, right to the end of the aircraft where our two seater window seat area is located. After viewing the pushback, taxing and takeoff of our Thai Airways Boeing 777 we proceed to present this aircraft's Economy class cabin. We cover topics such as the inflight blanket and pillow, the inflight entertainment system, the leg room at our seats, the seat tray, the USB charging device for smartphones and iPads etc. Once the flight is underway we are served some peanuts and a drink (this in flight service is free of charge throughout the flight). Following our drink we present our in flight meal (dinner) to the viewer. Once we have eaten the viewer is also given a tour of the aircraft's lavatory and rear galley. Once morning arrives and we begin to get closer to Bangkok we are once again woken by the crew and given a nice warm facecloth which is followed up by the serving of breakfast. The breakfast in-flight meal is then also presented to the viewer. After breakfast the aircraft begins final approach to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport and eventually lands and taxis to our parking place. We then disembark onto the tarmac and are driven to the airport terminal in buses.
We had a comfortable and enjoyable flight onboard this Thai Airways Boeing 777 flying from Copenhagen, Denmark to Bangkok, Thailand. The crew was friendly, professional and attentive. The cabin was clean and had an airy interior. Legroom was the usual area provided in economy class on long haul flights. All inflight drinks both alcoholic and non-alcoholic where available Ad-libitum and free of charge. This complimentary meals and drinks are a service that we appreciate and do hope Thai Airways will continue providing. We would fly with Thai Airways on this route at any time and at the time of writing would highly recommend this airline for long haul flights to and from Bangkok, Thailand...

I was seated in Premium Economy, in seat 33A. The flight attendants were really nice, the food was great (there were 2 meals and a snack, although I only photographed one) and the seat was supremely comfortable. Unfortunately, no one will ever be able to fly Thai's premium economy ever again, because Thai has since removed their entire A340-500 fleet from service, and with it their premium economy class. There is also no more TG794/795 across the Pacific Ocean, as it's now serviced as TG692/693 with a 777-300ER with a stop in Seoul, which means there are no longer any direct flights from Thailand to the US. May Thai's A340-500s and their premium economy class rest in peace. :(
