Harper Ferry was described by Thomas Jefferson as "one of the most Stupendous scenes in nature". 230 years later, I would have to agree with the author of the Declaration of Independence.
At Harpers Ferry the Shenandoah meets the Potomac River through the Blue Ridge Mountains. As you drive southbound in on US Route 340, and begin to cross the bridge over the Shenandoah River and the Welcome sign to West Virginia, and the scenery of this quaint little historic town is impressive. The sound of train horns are often heard in the distance is they pass through the rock tunnel.
This city played a key role in the Civil War and probably most famous for the abolitionist John Brown, who led a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in an attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery. Although the raid failed, it inflamed sectional tensions and raised the stakes for the 1860 presidential election, that republican, Abraham Lincoln eventually won. Brown’s raid helped make any further accommodation between North and South nearly impossible and thus became an important impetus of the Civil War. He was hung for his attempt to free the slaves.
We feature in this video "Jefferson Rock", a unique large rock that somehow is balanced on a smaller rock. It is located just above St Peters Roman Catholic Church, a beautiful spot that over looks the Shenandoah River. Where to start…. From the beginning at Springer Mountain I Felt excited to get started on my journey from the bus depot. My pack was heavy and the mountains felt high and with 10 days of food and plenty of water around,( we followed Stover creek for some time) I forged north. The first night I slept next to Stover Creek Shelter and setting up camp came right to me for I had done this so many times before. Day two left me looking for water in the afternoon at Hawk Mountain Shelter I hade a hard time finding the water and when I returned to my gear at the shelter Weather was coming in and it didn’t look good. A Great Day in Harper's Ferry, WV on CSX's Cumberland Subdivision 6-12-15
For the first time on the Cumberland Sub I would consider this a successful trip. We started of with a eastbound coal drag followed by a 3 and a half hour dead time. Next came Q400 with a good sized consist behind a MAC leader, Q400 also had an axial on fire on the third to last car, this defect caused the traffic flow to get screwed up, which made for an interesting day. After that came Amtrak's Capitol Limited P030 and a few generic freights and coal drags. And then came K039 with NS power (usually has BNSF) which pulled up and stopped at the station where they sat for quite a while. This allowed us to have a good conversation with the engineer and see one of three rack trains that we would see over the trip. Over the trip we saw 17 trains and some foreign power. Appalachian Trail thru hike: Waynesboro, VA to Harper's Ferry, WV
This was by far one of the easiest sections thus far. Shenandoah National Park was great, but there were definitely a few things I wasn't too fond of. The waysides were convenient, but proved to be a good way to waste money. Also, the number of hikers out and about was a little overwhelming combined with the fact that the trail never took us by any of the famous landmarks. Fortunately, this, along with a thousand miles of trail, are now behind me. I am extremely excited to have crossed over into West Virginia and look forward to whatever lies ahead. I want to give a big thank you to all of my friends, family, and supporters who have followed me along on this journey. Thank you so much for watching and stay tuned for the second half! -

From the beginning at Springer Mountain I
Felt excited to get started on my journey from the bus depot.
My pack was heavy and the mountains felt high and with 10 days of food and plenty of water around,( we followed Stover creek for some time) I forged north.
The first night I slept next to Stover Creek Shelter and setting up camp came right to me
for I had done this so many times before.
Day two left me looking for water in the afternoon at Hawk Mountain Shelter
I hade a hard time finding the water and when I returned to my gear at the shelter
Weather was coming in and it didn’t look good. It got really dark and the temperature started to drop when you could hear the thunder roll in and getting louder. As I hustled to set up my tent the rain came and I grabbed my pack closing the flap behind me.
It poured so hard, lightening crashing all-around me, hail stones just smaller than ping-pong balls and the land flooded around my tent. My floor felt like a waterbed mattress.
The rain slowed for a moment, I ran out and saw a higher piece of ground, dragged my tent to it and dove right back in.
This storm raged on for 14 hours, the next day the moisture caused due drops to fall from the leaves most of the day, warm I just wore my t-shirt and forged on. It took my gear two days to dry out; thankfully my laptop was double bagged as I write my tale.
Three days and I was exhausted, I could hardly think past hiking, I was in survivor mode
and was operating in Lizard Brain, the bare minimum of a humanoid. I couldn’t really hold a conversation very well or really wanted too, I was so tired.
I knew this would happen and I went slowly not to get injured, a blowout knee or a twisted ankle could end my journey before it really begins.
Today I am at Hiawassee Georgia, its evening; I purchased all the food I need to make it to my next resupply in Franklin North Carolina. I ate a huge meal and am doctoring my minor wounds, preparing for the next leg of my journey.
Franklin North Carolina is a famous spot for prospecting Ruby’s, Emeralds and Safire.
My plan is to mine for two days and ship my gems back home to await my return.
This adventure has just begun and I can’t imagine what the future holds….
I have trimmed my pack weight from 85 to 65 pounds and its still heavy, and the people who carry 35 pounds……they say their packs are heavy too…..it’s all in your mind….
It’s heavy if you choose it to be so…..
I carry my pack, it is part of me now…..it is all I have…it is all I am…..

With the greatest luck possible, I made it to the C&O; signals (the only remaining ones were in White Sulphur Springs and I pretty much got footage of all of them) only 3 days before they were all completely removed on the CSX Allegheny Sub. There were a couple more Marc trains I caught that night but arent included do to quality. Then that pretty much concluded my night as there was some sort of fatal incident in Brunswick, Maryland that killed the train traffic.

Shenandoah Junction is a 15 minute drive from Harpers Ferry, and if you ever visit either location you for sure have to visit the other. Foamer paradise. Right off the bat I missed a empty CSX coal train that had a nice SD70ACe leading. And from there I spent the rest of the day in Shenandoah Junction (and Sheperdstown, WV for lunch and NS train 203) and then at the end of the day I caught CSX Q753 the "rock runner" coming over the famous old bridge on the CSX Shenandoah Subdivision in Harpers Ferry. On Monday July 28, 2014, I started a trip down to West Virgina, Virginia and Maryland. This was a trip centered more around a family event that happened near Alexandria, VA the weekend at the end of the week...but being the foamer that I am, I knew I had to go foam through West Virginia.
