18 The Story of Prophet Zakariyya AS, Yahya AS, Isa AS
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
All praise is due to
Allah,
Lord of the worlds.
Prophet Zakariyyaa,
peace be upon him, is mentioned by name 7 times in the
Noble Qur'an. Prophet Yahya, peace be upon him, is the son of Prophet Zakariyyaa, and he is mentioned by name 5 times in the Noble Qur'an.
Prophet Eesa, peace be upon him, is mentioned very often in the Noble Qur'an. He is mentioned by name (Eesa) 25 times, by the title Al-Masih 11 times, and by the name Ibn
Maryam (the son of
Mary) 23 times.
Allah, there is no deity except him, says:
"And [mention]
Zachariah, when he called to his Lord, "My Lord, do not leave me alone [with no heir], while you are the best of inheritors."
So We responded to him, and We gave to him
John, and amended for him his wife. Indeed, they used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive."
(
The Qur'an, Surah Al-Anbiyaa' 21: 89-90)
Allah also says:
"[This is] a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zachariah
When he called to his Lord a private supplication.
He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy.
And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from
Yourself an heir
Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of
Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."
[He was told], "O Zachariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"
[
An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' "
[Zachariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a
sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."
So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allah] in the morning and afternoon.
[Allah] said, "O John, take the
Scripture with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy
And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allāh
And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.
And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive."
(The Qur'an, Surah Maryam 19: 2-15)
"Indeed, the example of
Jesus to Allah is like that of
Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was."
(The Qur'an, Surah
Aali '
Imraan 3: 59
Allah also says:
"O
People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth.
The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist -- it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God.
Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
Never would the
Messiah disdain to be a servant of Allah, nor would the angels near [to Him]. And whoever disdains
His worship and is arrogant -- He will gather them to Himself all together."
(The Qur'an, Surah An-Nisaa 4: 171-172)
"They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "
O Children of
Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah -- Allah has forbidden him
Paradise, and his refuge is the
Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
So will they not repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food.
Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.
Say, "Do you worship besides Allah that which holds for you no [power of] harm or benefit while it is Allah who is the
Hearing, the
Knowing?"
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not exceed limits in your religion beyond the truth and do not follow the inclinations of a people who had gone astray before and misled many and have strayed from the soundness of the way."
Cursed were those who disbelieved among the
Children of Israel by the tongue of
David and of Jesus, the son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed."
(The Qur'an, Surah Al-Maa'idah 5: 72-78)
