In this episode, we look at the agitation by the socially and politically influential Jat community in Haryana which has taken a violent turn and discuss the burning question of caste-based reservation in this country. As the mobs go on rampage in Haryana and political leaders' houses are set on fire, we debate whether this demand for an Other Backward Class or OBC quota by Jats is justified and whether any country should make policies on the basis of violent blackmail.

My suspicion of the Congress hand in the violent Jat quota stir in Haryana — which I expressed strongly on Twitter on Saturday evening, without any serious opposition or denials from the Congress, save a weak reply by MP from Rohtak, Deepender Hooda — received unexpected confirmation late on Sunday.
This was after an audio tape of former Haryana Chief Minister BS Hooda’s political advisor, Professor Virender, advising a captain (name unconfirmed but purportedly the spokesperson of the Dalal Khap Chaurasi) came into the public domain.
In the audio, the professor is heard asking the captain to stir up trouble in Sirsa, while commending the ‘work’ achieved in the Deshwal belt that comprises parts of Rohtak, Jind and Sonepat. Rohtak is Hooda’s political constituency and hometown.

Jat protesters lifted blockade from parts of Haryana this evening after the state government said it would give them reservation in the coming budget session of the Assembly. The decision was taken after a meeting of Jat leaders with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Twelve people died and 150 have been injured over the eight days of protests and curfew is in place across four districts.

The Jat people[pronunciation?] are a community of traditionally non-elite tillers and herders in Northern India and Pakistan. Originally pastoralists in the lower Indus river-valley of Sindh, Jats migrated north into the Punjab region in late medieval times, and subsequently into the Delhi Territory, northeastern Rajputana, and the western Gangetic Plain in the 17th and 18th centuries. Of Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu faiths, they are now found mostly in the Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Punjab and the Indian states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Traditionally involved in peasantry, the Jats took up arms against the Mughal Empire during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The community played an important role in the development of the martial Khalsa panthan of Sikhism. The Hindu Jat kingdom reached its zenith under Suraj Mal of Bharatpur (1707–1763). By the 20th century, the landowning Jats became an influential group in several parts of North India, including Punjab,Western Uttar Pradesh,, Rajasthan,Haryana and Delhi. Over the years, several Jats abandoned agriculture in favour of urban jobs, and used their dominant economic and political status to claim higher social status.

This was after an audio tape of former Haryana Chief Minister BS Hooda’s political advisor, Professor Virender, advising a captain (name unconfirmed but purportedly the spokesperson of the Dalal Khap Chaurasi) came into the public domain. Jat protesters lifted blockade from parts of Haryana this evening after the state government said it would give them reservation in the coming budget session of the Assembly. The decision was taken after a meeting of Jat leaders with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. The Jats || Origin of Jat people from Shiva's Locks
Jat states of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries included Kuchesar ruled by the Dalal Jats, Gohad ruled by Rana Jats, and the Mursan state (the present-day Hathras district in Uttar Pradesh) ruled by the Thenua Jats.[citation needed] A recent ruler of this state was Raja Mahendra Pratap (1886–1979), who was popularly known as Aryan Peshwa. Jat rulers occupied and ruled from Gwalior Fort on several occasions: 1740 to 1756 by Maharaja Bhim Singh Rana[40] 1761 to 1767 by Maharaja Chhatar Singh Rana[41][42][43] In 1778, the Gwalior fort was again under the reign Rana Lokendra Singh[44] 1780 to 1783 by Maharaja Chhatra Singh Rana[45] Maharaja Suraj Mal captured Agra Fort on 12 June 1761 and it remained in the possession of Bharatpur rulers till 1774. -

Jat protesters lifted blockade from parts of Haryana this evening after the state government said it would give them reservation in the coming budget session of the Assembly. The decision was taken after a meeting of Jat leaders with Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Jat rulers occupied and ruled from Gwalior Fort on several occasions:
1740 to 1756 by Maharaja Bhim Singh Rana[40]
1761 to 1767 by Maharaja Chhatar Singh Rana[41][42][43]
In 1778, the Gwalior fort was again under the reign Rana Lokendra Singh[44]

Live Report :: With Haryana on the boil amid violent protests by Jats seeking reservations in government jobs, the army was called in over the weekend to take control of the situation in several districts. Some of the worst-affected areas witnessed an unusual spectacle: marching columns bearing placards with the word “Army” written in bold red letters.
Several factors prompted this action, starting with the Haryana Police’s poor handling of events. Sections of the force were indifferent, even complicit, in dealing with the rampaging mobs. The lower rungs of the force in particular failed to act, leading to the vandalism and torching of buses, bridges, government buildings and public property in several areas.
As the police looked the other way, agitating Jats used earth movers and other heavy machinery to dig up roads and cripple the movement of vehicles, apart from sitting on railway tracks to block trains. Protesters also looted showrooms and shops, while lathi-wielding mobs allegedly beat up members of other communities and targeted their homes.

The Jat people (Hindi pronunciation: [dʒaːʈ]) (also spelled Jatt) are a traditionally peasant community in Northern India and Pakistan. Originally pastoralists in the lower Indus river-valley of Sindh, Jats migrated north into the Punjab region, Delhi Territory, Rajputana, and western Gangetic Plain in late medieval times. On Prime Time today, we take a tour of a remote village inside Sonepat district in Haryana where the deeply conservative residents are bound by traditions of caste and Gotras. On speaking to the elders of the village, we understand get to understand their cultural beliefs and sentiments upon which caste politics get played upon by politicians. Also, to our surprise, the villagers demonstrated how patriarchal their society is when they vehemently opposed giving the post of village head to a woman. Originally pastoralists in the lower Indus river-valley of Sindh, Jats migrated north into the Punjab region, Delhi Territory, Rajputana, and western Gangetic Plain in late medieval times. Of Muslim, Sikh, and Hindu faiths, they now live mostly in the Indian states of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh and the Pakistani provinces of Sindh and Punjab.
Traditionally involved in peasantry, the Jats took up arms against the Mughal Empire during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The community played an important role in the development of the martial Khalsa panthan of Sikhism. The Hindu Jat kingdom reached its zenith under Suraj Mal of Bharatpur (1707–1763). By the 20th century, the landowning Jats became an influential group in several parts of North India, including Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Delhi. Over the years, several Jats abandoned agriculture in favour of urban jobs, and used their dominant economic and political status to claim higher social status.
