After waiting for a half an hour, a boat finally showed up and made this sweet draw bridge go up. I think the operator made it go all the way up just because he saw me waiting for so long, because they usually only life it half way for a boat this size.

We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it's slip in the marina across the river. As soon as the operator gets confirmation that the boat can't fit, he opens the bridge. He starts by blowing the warning horn three times to alert pedestrians and traffic to clear the bridge. Then, the gates go down to prevent traffic from proceeding, then, he unlocks the leafs of the bridge and raises them to about 20 degrees open on either side. The captain of the vessel says he's through, and the operator lowers the bridge, locks it in place, and opens the gates again. Once traffic starts to proceed through again, we take a look out the other side of the shanty and see Walk Bridge, which is used by Metro North and Amtrak. While taking the train down to Belmar, I noticed while crossing the Shark River Drawbridge that the Ocean Avenue drawbridge was raised. I figured that there must be some boat traffic heading into the river, so I hightailed it over to the Main Street/Route 71 drawbridge. I made it with time to spare, and at 2:30, the traffic lights started to change. There were a lot of boats that had to come through, so the bridge was opened for nearly 10 minutes.

So we ride our bikes up to a bridge clearly getting ready to raise the opening when not one but TWO Ladies that clearly chose to ignore the lady in the bridge's control room. The one lady finally stopped but didn't move while the other lady kept walking. She held up the bridge while the control operator became very concerned. She not only held up cars on either side of the bridge but boats too.

Drawbridge
A drawbridge or draw-bridge is a type of movable bridge typically associated with the entrance of a castle surrounded by a moat. In some forms of English, including American English, the word drawbridge commonly refers to all types of movable bridges, such as bascule bridges, vertical-lift bridges and swing bridges, but this article concerns the narrower, more historical definition of the term.
Castle draw-bridges
Medieval castles were usually defended by a ditch or moat, crossed by wooden bridge. In early castles the bridge might be designed to be destroyed or removed in the event of an attack, but drawbridges became very common. A typical arrangement would have the drawbridge immediately outside a gatehouse, consisting of a wooden deck with one edge hinged or pivoting at the gatehouse threshold, so that in the raised position the bridge would be flush against the gate, forming an additional barrier to entry. It would be backed by one or more portcullises and gates. Access to the bridge could be resisted with missiles from machicolations above or arrow slits in flanking towers.

We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it'...
We are in the bridge tender's shanty on the Washington Street Drawbridge in Norwalk, Connecticut, where we see a boat coming up the Norwalk River headed for it's slip in the marina across the river. As soon as the operator gets confirmation that the boat can't fit, he opens the bridge. He starts by blowing the warning horn three times to alert pedestrians and traffic to clear the bridge. Then, the gates go down to prevent traffic from proceeding, then, he unlocks the leafs of the bridge and raises them to about 20 degrees open on either side. The captain of the vessel says he's through, and the operator lowers the bridge, locks it in place, and opens the gates again. Once traffic starts to proceed through again, we take a look out the other side of the shanty and see Walk Bridge, which is used by Metro North and Amtrak. While taking the train down to Belmar, I noticed while crossing the Shark River Drawbridge that the Ocean Avenue drawbridge was raised. I figured that there must be some boat traffic heading into the river, so I hightailed it over to the Main Street/Route 71 drawbridge. I made it with time to spare, and at 2:30, the traffic lights started to change. There were a lot of boats that had to come through, so the bridge was opened for nearly 10 minutes.

The one lady finally stopped but didn't move while the other lady kept walking. She held up the bridge while the control operator became very concerned. She not only held up cars on either side of the bridge but boats too.

The calm, scenic route across Biscayne Bay will once again close when the east drawbridge of the Venetian Causeway is shut down for repairs from Monday through the end of the year. The east drawbridge that connects Rivo Alto Island and Belle Isle will close at 4 a.m. Monday. Crews will work on the motors, switches, brakes and wiring of the drawbridge ...
