Description
The imposing two storey concrete structure of The Sorting Shed with its luxurious interior was completed in May 2012. Its height and dimensions, construction methods and materials draw upon the original kiln built in the 1930’s. The now decaying original concrete kiln is still visible in the distance from the upstairs balcony of its 2012 descendant. Architect Sally Draper and builder Craig Martin worked together, using traditional concrete form work methods and recycled materials to create this stunning 2 story house.
The Sorting Shed provides 3 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, one en suite with a shower and one with a shower and a spa bath. The main bedroom looks into a grove of mature deciduous trees, planted many years ago, when there was a previous farmhouse in this location. The second and third bedrooms enjoy expansive views across the farm towards Mt Buffalo. A special feature of The Sorting Shed is the sauna located downstairs (great after skiing or bikeriding or being out in the cold).
Ascending the stairs to the second level, you are immediately drawn to the spectacular views of Mt Bogong and Feathertop. The second level features a grand living space with floor to ceiling doors and windows providing close up views of Mt Buffalo to the South and access to two generous balconies, each with their own imposing views.
At one end of the space is a modern luxuriously equipped kitchen with ILVE oven and induction cooktop. To one side of this, is a cosy and enclosed den with its own special views of the mountains. At the other end, a living space with contemporary and comfortable couches, and incorporating the architect’s signature window seat and a wood fire. The interior of this house, like the 2 earlier kilnhouses, bears the unique stamp of the interior designer, Russell Grainger. He has carefully and skillfully created warm and inviting rooms and living spaces with great attention to detail. The result is stunning.
Downstairs, heating is provided under foot by floor heating embedded in polished concrete floors. Upstairs, the wood fire – a large one in the living space and a smaller one in the den. Heating and cooling is also available via reverse cycle air conditioners located upstairs.
The Sorting Shed accommodates up to 6 adults. It features one large living, dining and kitchen area, a separate den and 2 large upstairs balconies.
Downstairs – a main bedroom with king bed and ensuite; 2 bedrooms with 2 king singles which can be made into king size beds. A separate bathroom with spa and shower and single separate toilet. Downstairs also features a sauna with adjoining shower and views across the farm. A fully equipped laundry with washing machine and drier complete the amenities.
The sorting shed features 2 large slim televisions and DVD players, wireless internet, an iPod dock and SONOS sound system.
Several features of this house mean that it is more suitable for adults, rather than for young children – stairs, sauna, the upstairs fireplace and low level open shelves with crockery.
