We had ten US Navy sailors cross into Iranian waters, and they were detained. The were in two boats which were boarded by the Iranian navy. They were held for a day and released. Cenk Uygur, host of the The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"Iran’s release of 10 United States Navy sailors on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after they were detained on the Persian Gulf, is being hailed in both countries as a sign that their relations have evolved since the signing of the nuclear accord last summer.
Secretary of State John Kerry thanked the Iranians “for their cooperation in swiftly resolving this matter” and suggested in a statement that the quick resolution of the issue was a product of the nearly daily back-and-forth that now takes place between Washington and Tehran, after three decades of hostility and stony silence.
In an appearance later Wednesday at the National Defense University in Washington, Mr. Kerry said that his focus on diplomacy with a country “we hadn’t talked to for 35 years” before the nuclear negotiations had paid off.
“These are always situations that as everybody knows, if not properly handled, can get out of control,” Mr. Kerry said. “We can all imagine how a similar situation might have played out three or four years ago.””*

Urging him to work for the release of an Iranian-American businessman who has been detained in Iran since October, five Iranian-American groups wrote to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry last week. Delivered on Friday, the letter said there was no evidence to justify the detention of Siamak Namazi. Namazi was "left behind" in the wake of a U.S.-Iran prisoner deal that saw other Americans released from Iranian jails last month. Most recently, he was working for an oil and gas company in the United Arab Emirates called Crescent Petroleum. Previously, he headed a consulting firm in Iran.

Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps says it has held two US naval boats after they entered the country’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.
The IRGC says the American vessels were stopped near Iran’s Farsi island in the Persian Gulf and were transferred to the island. It says the sailors are in good health and are being kept at a suitable place. The Pentagon says Washington has received assurances from officials in Tehran that the vessels and the sailors will be released soon. The White House also expressed optimism and said it was working to resolve the situation and get the personnel returned. US officials also said Secretary of State John Kerry called his Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zarif over the incident.

For the film, which she produced, she was also the recipient of a Best Actress award from the Beverly Hills Film Festival and The Action on Film International Film Festival.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told NBC News on Wednesday that the country will never develop nuclear weapons and that he has the clout to make a deal with the West on the disputed atomic program.
"In its nuclear program, this government enters with full power and has complete authority," Rouhani told Ann Curry, NBC News national and international correspondent and anchor at large, in his first interview with a U.S. news outlet since his election.
"The problem won't be from our side," he said at the presidential compound in Tehran. "We have sufficient political latitude to solve this problem."
Asked whether Iran would ever build a nuclear weapon, Rouhani noted that the country has repeatedly pledged that "under no circumstances would we seek any weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons, nor will we ever."
"We have never pursued or sought a nuclear bomb, and we are not going to do so," he said. "We solely are looking for peaceful nuclear technology."
Rouhani's comments are the latest in a slew of signs that he is cautiously open to defrosting relations with the U.S., which were in deep freeze under the isolating leadership of his predecessor, the inflammatory Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.
He and President Obama have exchanged letters in which they traded views on "some issues."
"From my point of view, the tone of the letter was positive and constructive," Rouhani said of the note he got from the White House congratulating him on his June election, in which he defeated five hard-liners.
"It could be subtle and tiny steps for a very important future. I believe the leaders in all countries could think in their national interest and they should not be under the influence of pressure groups. I hope to witness such an atmosphere in the future."
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Wednesday that in the letter, Obama told Rouhani the U.S. is open to a resolution to the nuclear impasse in which Iran can prove its atomic program is peaceful.
But he also conveyed the need to act quickly because the window for a diplomatic deal "will not remain open indefinitely," Carney said.
On another pressing topic, Rouhani was questioned about his views on Iran's close ally Syria and its promise to give up chemical weapons under the threat of air strikes from the U.S.
He said he could give no guarantees on behalf of Syrian President Bashar Assad, just days after he was quoted by his country's official news agency as saying he would accept any Syrian president elected by the people.

Reza Aslan: Bio, Books, Education, Historian, Zealot, No God But God - Interview (2014)
Reza Aslan (Persian: رضا اصلان, IPA: [ˈɾezɒː æsˈlɒːn]; born May 3, 1972) is an Iranian-American professor of creative writing at the University of California, ...
Reza Aslan (Persian: رضا اصلان, IPA: [ˈɾezɒː æsˈlɒːn]; born May 3, 1972) is an Iranian-American professor of creative writing at the University of California, Riverside. His educational background is in religious studies and the history of religion, and includes a PhD in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He has written two books on religion: No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam and Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. Aslan is a member of the American Academy of Religion.
Reza Aslan supported the assassination of Libyan "Revolutionary Leader" Muammar Gaddafi.
Aslan's family came to the United States from Tehran in 1979, fleeing the Iranian Revolution. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the age of 15 he converted to evangelical Christianity.[5] He converted back to Islam the summer before attending Harvard.[6] In the early 1990s, Aslan taught courses at De La Salle High School in Concord, California.
Aslan holds a BA in religious studies at Santa Clara University, an MTS at Harvard Divinity School, an MFA at the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop, and a PhD in sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.[7][8][9] His dissertation was titled "Global Jihadism as a Transnational Social Movement: A Theoretical Framework".[10]
In August 2000, while serving as the Truman Capote Fellow at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Aslan was a visiting faculty member in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Iowa, becoming the first person to teach Islamic studies full-time in the state.[11]
Aslan was the 2012–13 Wallerstein Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Drew University Center on Religion, Culture & Conflict.
Aslan has written articles for The Daily Beast as a contributing editor. He has also written for various newspapers and periodicals, including The Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Slate, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, The Guardian, the Chicago Tribune, and The Nation. He has made numerous appearances on TV and radio, including National Public Radio (NPR), PBS, The Rachel Maddow Show, Meet the Press, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Anderson Cooper 360°, Hardball, Nightline, Real Time with Bill Maher, Fareed Zakaria GPS, and ABC Australia's Big Ideas.
On 26 July 2013, Aslan was interviewed on Spirited Debate, a Fox News webcast by anchor Lauren Green about his book Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth.[18] Green was "unsatisfied with Aslan's credentials," and she pressed Aslan, questioning why a Muslim would write about Jesus.[19] Aslan answered, “Because it’s my job as an academic. I am a professor of religion, including the New Testament. That’s what I do for a living, actually.” The interview lasted about ten minutes and focused "on Aslan's background more than the actual contents of the book."[19] The video clip of the interview went viral within days[18] and the book, which was up to that point selling "steadily",[18] appeared at the 4th place on the New York Times print hardcover best-seller list.[18] By late July 2013, it was topping the U.S. best-seller list on Amazon.
Following Aslan's interview with Fox News, some questioned Aslan's academic claims. An article written by Manuel Roig-Franzia in The Washington Post entitled "Reza Aslan: A Jesus scholar who’s hard to pin down" accused Green of asking "astonishingly absurd questions," and Aslan of being a "moving target", as those questions succeeded in goading him to talk about his qualifications. It described him as being "eager—perhaps overeager—to present himself as a formidable academic with special bona fides in religion and history" and "boast[ing] of academic laurels he does not have."[21] The article quoted Aslan's dissertation adviser, Mark Juergensmeyer, as saying that he did not have a problem with Aslan's characterization of his credentials.

The U.S. and Iran appear to be on the cusp of a historic deal which could end decades of animosities and ensure a nuclear weapons-free Iran. But with political forces mobilizing on Capitol Hill to torpedo the deal, and both sides pushing for last-minute concessions, the likelihood of a breakthrough remains unclear. Does President Obama have enough political capital to ensure the sustainability of an eventual deal, and what are the broader geopolitical implications of the agreement? Oksana is joined by Trita Parsi, the President of the National American Iranian Council, to analyse these issues.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Sunday that the Holocaust was no "myth," and that a statement suggesting otherwise -- found on the website of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei -- was simply a mistranslation.
"I have spoken to the leader on this issue," Zarif said during an interview on ABC's "This Week." "He rejects and condemns the killing of innocent people."
"No, the Holocaust is not a myth," he added. "Nobody is talking about a myth ... if it is there it is a bad translation and it is translated out of context.
"This is the problem when you translate something from Persian to English," he said. "You may lose some of the meaning. This has unfortunately been the case several times over. The point is, we condemn the killing of innocent people whether it happens in Nazi Germany or whether it is happening in Palestine."
The acknowledgement of the Holocaust has remained a point of conflict in U.S.-Iranian relations, flaring up most often during the U.S. visits by former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Since the election of Iran's current president, the more moderate Hassan Rouhani, it has remained a subject of sensitivity. During his recent visit to the U.S., Rouhani described the Holocaust as a "crime that the Nazis committed towards the Jews" and called it "reprehensible and condemnable." But those comments, made to CNN, were later disputed by a semi-official Iranian news agency, which said the network had botched the translation.
Zarif's comments were certainly definitive, though skeptics would note that there is a difference between stating that the Holocaust took place and acknowledging its severity.
Asked if what he would do about Khamenei's website, which refers to the "myth of the massacre of Jews known as the Holocaust," Zarif replied: "I'll talk to them."

Although there is no dearth of broke Brooklyn girls on the big and small screens, none looks and sounds quite like Desiree Akhavan. The 30-year-old filmmaker wrote, directed and stars in "Appropriate Behavior"--out Jan. 16--about a bisexual New Yorker trying to make love and work for herself. Akhavan also has a recurring role on season four of HBO's Girls. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Iranian-American said, "I love comedy, and I love dark comedy. At this moment I happen to be drawn to certain LGBT stories. One day I'd really like to make a movie about my mother's immigration to the States when she was 20 years old. She had gotten married at 19 and had this very big culture shock when the Iranian revolution happened. That's a story we've rarely seen that I would really love to tell."
