STORYLINE:
The Afghan Foreign Minister and a delegation from Kabul were in Washington, DC on Wednesday for the first meeting of the US-Afghanistan Bilateral Commission, comprising talks with senior US diplomats.
Speaking at a news conference at the event, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged to continue to assist the Afghan government in the foreseeable future.
"We know that difficult days lie ahead. But despite the challenges, the United States is committed to the people of Afghanistan. And we have made progress together that too often is overlooked," she said.
Clinton said she hoped more thought would start to be given to the "positive gains" experienced in Afghanistan.
Her Afghan counterpart, Zalmai Rassoul, said his country was committed to the path of peace and vowed that the Kabul government was preparing the way for upcoming elections that would be fair and free.
Rassoul also said that the government is committed to continue to develop the many areas of Afghan society that have experienced improvements in the last decade.
"As we continue to advance human rights, enhance regional cooperation for peace and prosperity, develop our human and national resources, combat corruption, improve governance, build infrastructure, public health, education and to fight terrorism and extremism, we will count on the continuing and substantial support of our biggest and most important ally, the United States of America," he said.
On Sunday the killing of an American serviceman pushed US military deaths in the war in Afghanistan to 2,000.

STORYLINE
Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul held bilateral talks with his visiting Japanese counterpart Koichiro Gemba in Kabul on Wednesday.
Following the meeting, Rassoul told the media that Japan is still determined to provide support for Afghanistan's security and development.
"Despite the economic problems due to the earthquake, tsunami and floods which shocked Japan, Japan will continue to give five billion US dollar (to Afghanistan) as it was pledged," Rassoul told the media.
In November 2009, Tokyo announced a five-year pledge of 5 (b) billion US dollars to help the war-torn nation strengthen its police force as well as support agriculture and infrastructure projects.
The Japanese have abandoned a refuelling mission that supported troops in Afghanistan and now only offer humanitarian support.
NATO and international forces are encouraging the rapidly expanding Afghan security forces to take more responsibility ahead of the coalition's 2014 pullout target date.
NATO's training mission hopes have about 350-thousand Afghan troops and police trained and ready by then.

Pakistan and Afghanistan's foreign ministers on Thursday vowed to extend cooperation to each other in fighting militancy.
Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke at a joint news conference in Islamabad, promising that they would not allow militants to use their soils for attacks against any country.
Both sides also discussed the ongoing reconciliation process and other issues.
Rassoul said an effort was under way to reintegrate non al-Qaida Taliban who are fighting in the region for different motives.
"We are trying to reach them and to convince them that destroying their own country and killing their own citizens is not in the interest of Afghanistan or themselves," said Rassoul.
Rassoul also said the reconciliation was a broader concept, that included not only Afghanistan, but the entire region. For this to take place, a closer cooperation was needed with Pakistan.
Qureshi stressed the importance of Pakistan as an ally to the US and other security forces in helping Afghanistan train their security forces.
"Pakistan can play a facilitating role. Why do we offer that? We offer that because we understand each other more than any other nation of the world," Qureshi said.
Earlier, Qureshi and Rassoul had a meeting at the foreign ministry and discussed how the two countries could further improve cooperation in the fight against militancy.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are key US allies and Kabul in the recent past has blamed Islamabad for the violence in Afghanistan.

He has been very active with that, he is part of an executive committee of the 'loya jirga' process - he left for Afghanistan directly from Rome before he went inside Afghanistan so it's very normal he comes to Rome first before going back and taking on his new job in Afghanistan."

STORYLINE:
Hamid Karzai, the leader of Afghanistan's new interim administration was in Rome on Tuesday for talks with the exiled Afghan king and to get his blessing for Afghanistan's new transitional government.
Karzai is expected to talk with Mohammad Zaher Shah on Tuesday evening.
The 87-year-old monarch, who has lived in Rome since his 1973 ousting, is seen by many as a unifying figure for Afghanistan.
Like the monarch, Karzai is a Pashtun, Afghanistan's dominant ethnic group.
Karzai was named as the head of the interim administration earlier this month during UN-sponsored talks near Bonn, Germany.
He was listed as part of the king's delegation to the talks.
According to the Germany agreement, Karzai will rule the country for six months during which time his Cabinet of 29 people will set the stage for the transition.
Zaher Shah is expected to return to his homeland soon, perhaps before March, Zalmai Rassoul, one of the exiled monarch's aides, said Tuesday.
Shah has for years tried to organize a traditional Afghan assembly, or loya jirga, to form a new government in Afghanistan.
He is to convene a national assembly of tribal leaders, who will choose a government to lead Afghanistan for two years, during which a constitution is to be drafted and a judicial system and police force are put into place following the ouster of the country's Taliban regime.

Saying it was urgent to get peace efforts going, the European
Union's top security envoy on Sunday became the latest to consult
with the exiled king of Afghanistan and declared that the monarch's
great respectability would make him a player in his homeland's
future should the ruling Taliban regime topple.
After an hour of talks with King Mohammad Zaher Shah, Javier
+Solana+ told reporters outside the monarch's villa outside Rome
that the European Union was ready to help Afghanistan with
humanitarian aid.
"Our hope is that Afghanistan can join the family of nations
again," the envoy said. "Unfortunately, there's a group of
fanatics who run the country."
Asked what role the king could play in any peace efforts for
Afghanistan, +Solana+ replied: "The king is a very respectable
person, and he's also a very respected person. We think he can play
a role." +Solana+ didn't spell out that role.
U.S. attacks on Afghanistan have slowed the king's efforts to put
together a transitional government for his homeland should the
Taliban be toppled.
The 87-year-old monarch and the main Taliban opposition group,
the northern alliance, which holds a slice of northern Afghanistan,
agreed nearly a month ago to form a 120-member council, which would
organize a national assembly to form a transitional government.
The king's advisers also have been dealing for weeks with various
Afghan groups who oppose the Taliban but are not part of the
northern alliance.
Asked how the council was shaping up, an aide to the monarch,
Zalmai Rassoul, said "we expect to finalize it very soon." He
offered no date or place for the assembly.
Said +Solana+: "Time is pressing, but that is good, because it
means there's an urgency for the peace effort to begin."
The idea of a broad-based transitional government under a neutral
figure like the king, who has lived in +Italy+ since being ousted in
1973, has generated backing in the international community.
+Solana+, in an interview with Italian state TV hours before his
talks with the king, said he came to "sound out what the ex-king
thinks about the political solutions in a post-Taliban
Afghanistan."

The elder brother of Afghanistan's president explained on Friday why he has withdrawn from the upcoming presidential race and commended his brother for doing what he described as a "remarkable, remarkable job".
In his first interview since withdrawing, Qayyum Karzai spoke of his hopes for the country's political future.
"It is up to the candidates and the power players in Afghanistan that they - for the sake of the country - go beyond their appetite and submit to the some norms of the process," he said, speaking one day after officially bowing out of the race.
He said he quit the April 5 presidential race to rally undecided countrymen in favour of a moderate candidate, the country's former foreign minister, Zalmai Rassoul.
Karzai says he backs Rassoul because he has the temperament and the moderate vision to steer Afghanistan through a "dignified transition."
The decision to drop out followed days of speculation and backdoor meetings.
Hamid Karzai, who has served two terms, is not eligible to run under Afghanistan's constitution.
