"No we are talking about this election. All that we want is that this in election all candidates participate who have registered and have the conditions according to the law. This is the main thing that we want. The other thing we want is time. Time is very important to us because at this moment if today all these candidates qualify there is no time for propaganda and for competition fairly. So we have many problems with democracy in our country, I know. But a fair and legal and free election is the only thing that we want in this situation, not anything else."

STORYLINE:
Iran's largest pro-reform party has announced that it will boycott February 20 elections, with its leader saying the party has lost hope that a free and fair parliamentary vote can be held as scheduled.
Mohammad Reza Khatami, the party leader and brother of the Iranian president, said the Islamic Iran Participation
Front would not field any candidates.
"We do not participate in the election and we will announce our decision to the public " he said in a press conference in the capital Tehran on Monday.
Nearly all of the Front's candidates have been barred from running in the election - some of them sitting lawmakers,
including Khatami, who is also deputy speaker of parliament.
Without the Front, hard-line candidates likely would step easily into enough seats to retake control of parliament.
Reformists had won the parliament in 2000 for the first time since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and used it as a
platform to press for social and political reforms.
Earlier on Monday, the government spokesman said Iranian Cabinet ministers backed calls to postpone the parliamentary vote and vowed during an emergency meeting not to hold a sham election.
Iran's powerful, hard-line Guardian Council ultimately decides when an election is held.
However, the government's position strengthens the hand of reformists demanding a boycott over mass Council disqualifications of liberals seeking office.
Hard-liners may have to resort to extraordinary measures - perhaps even relying on the elite revolutionary guards and
other armed forces - simply to hold elections on February 20 as scheduled.
Instead, the Cabinet meeting was chaired by First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref, Ramezanzadeh said.

Tehran - 17 February 2004
Reformist lawmakers in the outgoing Iranian parliament have sent a daring letter to Iran's supreme leader, accusing him of trampling on freedom and basic rights. The 100 members of parliament, who include deputy speaker Mohammad Reza Khatami, have sent a letter to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticising his support for the disqualification of about 2,400 candidates in the parliamentary elections due to be held on Friday. It is extremely rare that people publicly criticise Khamenei, who is regarded by his supporters as being incapable of error and answerable only to God.

Arguments broke out on the floor of Iran's parliament, following elections widely disputed by reformers. Reformist members of parliament shouted their disgust at the outcome of Friday's vote, which strengthened the hand of Islamic rulers and saw fewer women and reformist candidates hold seats in the lawmaking body. One reformer was dragged from parliament, and others shouted from the podium. The election saw the expansion of the theocracy's influence, and denied liberals an important forum in which to challenge the non-elected clerical establishment that has final say in almost all affairs.

Iran will stop building and assembling centrifuges for uranium enrichment this week, the country's nuclear chief said on Tuesday after a meeting with the chief UN weapons inspector. Gholamreza Aghazadeh, head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, said the country would "voluntarily" suspend its centrifuge work starting April 9. Iran "is interested as quickly as possible to bring this case to a close," he said. Mohamed ElBaradei, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, welcomed the announcement and said a new team of inspectors would travel to Tehran on April 12 to verify that all uranium enrichment activities had stopped.

The showdown over the disqualification of electoral candidates deepened on Monday as reformists threatened a boycott of next month's polls and Iran's supreme leader said he would intervene if the issue were not resolved.
The 12-member Guardian Council, which is made up of conservatives picked by Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has barred more than 80 incumbent members of parliament, all reformists, from seeking another term in the February 20 parliamentary elections.
Altogether, hundreds of liberal candidates have been disqualified.
Also on Monday, the European Union's foreign policy chief called for a fair electoral process in Iran.

During the intervening time nothing special has happened, or at least according to the documents issued by the Council of Guardians, there was no special incident according to which they can disqualify these people. It is very illogical to disqualify the people who have qualified before."

STORYLINE:
Reformist lawmakers in the outgoing Iranian parliament have sent a daring letter to Iran''s supreme leader, accusing him of trampling on freedom and basic rights.
"The popular (1979) revolution brought freedom and independence for the country in the name of Islam, but now you lead a system in which legitimate freedoms and the rights of the people are being trampled on in the name of Islam," the legislators said in the letter.
"Institutions under your supervision, after four years of humiliating the elected parliament and thwarting (reform) bills, have now deprived the people of the most basic right - the right to choose and be chosen," the letter said.
The letter was sent to Khamenei on Monday, and was not expected to be published in Iranian newspapers.
The disqualifications were carried out by the Guardian Council, whose 12 members are appointed by Khamenei.
President Mohammad Khatami, the elder brother of Reza Khatami, condemned the disqualifications and initially said his government would not hold elections under such conditions.
However, earlier this month, President Khatami bowed to Khamenei''s authority and said the elections would be held, but he warned that the lack of a fair choice would de-motivate people from voting.
In Tehran on Tuesday, some residents said they would not vote because they did not believe in the eligibility of the candidates.
President Khatami was first elected in 1997 on a program of liberalising Iran, increasing political freedoms and relaxing the strict Islamic social code.

As more votes are counted, it's becoming clear that reformists will be taking over Iran's parliament.
With two-thirds of the votes counted, state media report reformists have a commanding lead over the hard-liners who have dominated the government for 21 years.
A head-count taken by the Associated Press indicates reformists won 72 percent of the races in which the results were known.
Meanwhile, two popular reformists, jailed by hard-liners for religious dissent, have been released on leave.
Former Iranian interior minister Abdollah Nouri was one of two popular reformists allowed to go home on leave after being jailed by hard-liners for religious dissent.
Nouri, whose leave lasts until Wednesday, seemed relaxed and in good spirits at his home in northern Tehran on Sunday.
SOUNDBITE: (Farsi)
"The people, since the 23rd of May 1997, understand that they are the decision-makers in this country. We believe and still believe that the people's participation can actually make a difference. The people confirmed that during the presidential elections and reconfirmed it."
SUPER CAPTION: Abdullah Nouri, Former Iranian interior minister
Another reformist, Mohsen Kadivar, was freed on Saturday on one-week leave.
The apparent win for reformers in the Iranian elections is a blow to the hard-liners who have led the country since the overthrow of the shah in 1979.
The reform movement elected a moderate Muslim cleric, Mohammad Khatami (HAHT'-ah-mee), to the presidency in 1997.
And Khatami's spokesman said that with an election victory for the reformists, reform would take place faster and sooner.
SOUNDBITE: (Farsi)
"I think the results are clear and definite that the reformists are going to win, so I don't think anything else is going to happen. This project was done with the election of President Khatami and when the parliament and government have the same goal and direction, reform can take place faster and sooner."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammed Ali Abtahi, Iranian President Khatami's spokesman
Many Iranians have begun ignoring hard-line restrictions on dress, dating, music and satellite dishes.
And voters yearning for more social and political freedoms appear to have given reformers a commanding lead in the parliamentary elections.
Results were out for 172 of the 290 parliamentary seats, and reformist candidates had an overwhelming lead, state media reported.
SOUNDBITE: (Farsi)

With 22 (m) million votes counted from 32 (m) million cast, the Islamic Republic News Agency said 67 percent of the winners were reformists, 25 per cent were conservatives and the rest independents.
It didn't give a numerical breakdown.
Attention is now focused on Tehran, a prestigious constituency where several high-profile candidates are running.
The first results from the capital, which has 30 seats in Majlis - or parliament - could be known later on Sunday.
The Interior Ministry, which is in charge of the elections, will only announce the final results when they become known later this week.
Elections are not run on party lines and winners are only listed by name, making it difficult to pinpoint affiliations of lesser-known candidates.
The new Iranian parliament will convene in June.

Farsi/Nat
Iran's once invincible hard-liners are counting the cost of a stunning election defeat.
The reformists, led by Mohammad Reza Khatami, brother of the Iranian President, has claimed a landslide victory in last Friday's crucial parliamentary poll.
They had won 109 seats in the 290-member parliament as vote counting continued on Tuesday.
As the votes continue to be counted in the Iranian elections, victory for the reformists is becoming more emphatic by the hour.
Among the biggest shocks was the failure of the former President, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, to win a seat outright.
He's the centrist leader backed by the traditionalist clergy and tipped for the crucial post of parliamentary speaker.
Heading the list of winners are the reformists, led by Mohammad Reza Khatami, the younger brother of the moderate Iranian President.
He was 80-thousand votes clear of Jamileh Kadivar, the leading female vote-winner in last year's Tehran municipal elections.
The full results will be known later this week.
But Khatami told a news conference that there's little doubt reformists will emerge with a commanding majority in the assembly.
SOUNDBITE: (Farsi)
"Of the 191 parliamentarians already elected, 137 are candidates of the reformist block and 109 are from the Islamic Iran Participation (IIPF) Party."
SUPER CAPTION: Mohammad Reza Khatami, Leader of the Islamic Iran Participation Party
Khatami has promised to use his new position in parliament to push for the constitution to be fully implemented.
His party has promised to build a modern society based on democracy, granting more freedoms to Iranians and equality to women.
For the Middle East, Europe and beyond, it could herald a new, easier era in relations with the government in Tehran.
But it remains to be seen whether the new parliament will be able to deliver the changes yearned for by Iran's increasingly urbanised population.

wn.com/Iran Election Landslide Victory For Reformists

STORYLINE:
For a second consecutive day, reformist members of the Iranian parliament have staged a sit-in in parliament to protest against their disqualification from forthcoming parliamentary elections.
Javier Solana, on a two-day visit to the country, also criticised the disqualifications.
He said it would be difficult for him to explain to the European parliament how members of the Iranian parliament could not be candidates.
Solana is in Tehran to discuss EU-Iran relations.
He is also expected to visit Bam, the southeastern city hit by an earthquake that killed more than 30-thousand people on December 26.
Speaking with Solana, Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi said his country was more than willing to have a cooperative relationship with the United States under the right conditions.
Solana also said the European Union was happy with developments with regard to Iran's nuclear programme.
The disqualified hopefuls still have the option to appeal against the decision.
Iranian President Mohammad Khatami vowed on Sunday to challenge the disqualifications, saying there would be a "harsh reaction" if legal channels failed to overturn the council's decision.
Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters, said on Monday that he would intervene to end the electoral row if necessary after all legal channels had been exhausted, state-run Tehran television reported.

Fighting has marred a pro-democracy rally attended by Gholamhossein Karbaschi, the suspended mayor of Tehran. Riot police broke up the rally at a stadium in the Iranian capital after tensions began to rise amongst hard-line vigilantes and protesters. The fighting began as Karbaschi urged the crows at the stadium to take part in Friday's elections for the Assembly of Experts, a body that elects the country's supreme leader. The three-thousand people attending the rally, mostly university students, used the occasion to vent their anger at hard-liners for trying to curb freedom of speech by closing down liberal newspapers.

The Outer Jihad against the Infidel is referred to 76 times in the Koran and the Inner Jihad is only mentioned 26 times. Mohammed thought that Holy War against the Infidel was the most important Jihad in the Dar al Harb, and the Inner Jihad was only to be pursued once a territory was conquered and now a part of Dar Al Islam.

Presented at the American Humanist Association 74th Annual Conference, May 7-10, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. #ahacon15
Reformists in Muslim countries are routinely silenced, through persecution or violence, which has been increasing over the last few decades as Islamism gains traction. Liberals are in a unique position to make a nuanced and compassionate critique of harmful conceptions of religion- a position which we are ceding. As a result, the only visible voices are those of hate-mongers from the far-right, Islamists and outright apologists. It is of the highest priority that liberals exert pressure on both groups towards positive change.
Sarah Haider is a co-founder of Ex-Muslims of North America, a community building organization for Ex-Muslims across the non-theist spectrum, for which she currently works to reduce discrimination of those who left Islam.

Muslim apologists, extremists, reformists, centrists—who’s on the path of wisdom and guidance? Not only did our beloved Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) deal with immense trials and struggles during his prophetic lifetime, but he foretold of periods of great fitna (tribulation) for the believers in the future. In this short but powerful discussion from Al-Madina's "Trials of the Messengers", Shaykh Yahya Rhodus lays the foundation for Muslims living during times of tribulation, compiling and analyzing traditions specifically advising us on how to respond to the modern landscape by preserving our dignity, maintaining faith, and remaining vigilant against our egotistical desires to associate with those who sow the seeds of division and violence over unity and forbearance.

What is happening inside Iran? What became of the green movement? While reformists seem removed from the political scene, what do the Iranians want for the future of their country? What have become of the aspirations of thousands of Iranian men and women who revolted against an oppressive regime, only to be bloodily suppressed? Without necessarily questioning the notion of an Islamic republic, they just want to make their country a little more democratic. Have their hopes fizzled out? On this particular journey we have special access to insiders, allowing us to measure how things are bubbling in a country where nearly 70% of the population is under 25, where the youth and their thirst for freedom threaten to boil over.
