The German military handed over the Pos-e-Aishan military base to Afghan security forces in northern Afghanistan on Saturday.
The German soldiers stayed in the base for over three years. The handover ceremony takes place as Afghan and NATO officials are working to hand over the full security responsibility to Afghan forces.
Meanwhile in Kabul, the Afghan defence minister urged a group of new soldiers to show unity and pride as part of the army that is taking over the lead from international troops in fighting the Taliban insurgency.
General Bismullah Khan Mohammadi told 3,000 graduates of Afghan National Army training on Saturday that the upcoming transfer of security responsibility nationwide is a day the "Afghan people have been waiting for for years."
The minister praised the army for recruiting soldiers from all of Afghanistan's ethnic groups, noting that a single battalion had ethnic Tajiks, Pashtuns, Hazaras and Uzbeks. He urged the graduates to unite to fight insurgents.
Worries of Afghan security forces fragmenting along ethnic lines have been one of many concerns about the Afghanistan's future without foreign combat troops who are leaving next year.

Flooding in a remote part of northern Afghanistan has claimed more than 70 lives and forced thousands to flee their homes, a provincial official said on Saturday.
The disaster in Guzirga i-Nur district, around 140 kilometres (85 miles) north of the provincial capital Puli Khumri, is the latest in a string of deadly flash floods, landslides and avalanches in Afghanistan's rugged northern mountains.
Roads in the region are poor and many villages are virtually cut off from the rest of the country.
Massoud Kozad, director of Baghlan Provincial Natural Disaster Management Authority, said at least 74 people are understood to have died and 800 houses have been destroyed.
A police official earlier put the death toll at 54, but indicated it could reach 100.
The Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority has stockpiles of food and other supplies in Baghlan province and has started the process of shipping them to the affected area, said a spokesperson.
A delegation has also been sent to the affected villages to assess needs.

Doctors Without Borders said in a statement: 'The MSF trauma center in Kunduz was hit several times during sustained bombing and was very badly damaged.
The organisation is demanding clarity on ‘exactly what took place and how this terrible event could have happened’.
It added that the airstrike continued for more than 30 minutes after American and Afghan military forces had allegedly been informed the hospital had been hit.
Frantic staff phoned military officials at NATO in Kabul and Washington as bombs rained on their hospital in the Afghan city on Kunduz for nearly an hour, the aid group said.
The first bomb landed at 2:10 am and MSF staff called NATO in officials in Kabul at 2:19 am and military officials in Washington a few minutes later, and the bombing continued until 3:13 am, an MSF official said, asking not to be identified.
MSF said that it had given the coordinates of the hospital to both Afghan and U.S. forces several times in the past months, including earlier this week, to avoid being caught in crossfire.
'The medical team is working around the clock to do everything possible for the safety of patients and hospital staff.'
MSF confirmed that all 10 of its international staffers are alive and accounted for, and the most critically injured have been transferred to hospital in Puli Khumri, a two-hour drive away.

At least 25 Afghan civilians were wounded when a bomb ripped through a crowd of worshippers waiting for food to break their Ramadan fast inside a mosque compound in northern Afghanistan, officials said.
The violence comes a day after a suicide attacker killed 33 people in one of the deadliest day for civilians this year, as terrorist’s ramp up violence across the country.
The bombing, which took place in the city of Puli Khumri, capital of Afghanistan’s Baghlan province, came as worshippers had finished their evening prayers in a local mosque and were waiting for meals, provided by the local government, to break their fast.

According to local media outlets, six members of a family were killed in a Saudi airstrike on a house in the northwestern Yemeni province of Sa’ada on Wednesday.
Reports say that Saudi jets have conducted at least 21 airstrikes on the city of Sa’ada since early in the morning.
Latest reports from the capital say that the Saudi jets are incessantly bombarding the city.
Saudi jets also pounded areas in the district of al-Sayyani in Yemen’s southern province of Ibb, killing two women and injuring a child.
Yemen’s southwestern province of Aden was also targeted over 100 times by Saudi jets.
More than 3,000 people, including 1,500 civilians, have been killed over the past three months in Yemen, according to the United Nations. Some local sources put the number of the dead at 4,500.
4… A mosque in the polish capital city of Warsaw was desecrated by a woman.
According to reports, the woman left a severed pig’s head outside the mosque and Islamic-cultural center in City Blue area of Warsaw.
The 40-year-old radical woman is a member of an extremist group, reports added.
Police said that the move was a crime and that the perpetrator will be detained for insulting the religious sanctities of Muslims.
The mosque had just been inaugurated at the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
It is the second mosque in Warsaw and its construction had faced many hurdles and problems.
Islamophobia has been on the rise across Europe during the past few months, especially after an attack against the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo earlier this year.
5… Chinese authorities have imposed a two-tier system for issuing passports that has made it difficult for Tibetans and members of other ethnic minorities to travel, the Human Rights Watch said.
The system requires residents from areas that have substantial Tibetan or Muslim populations to provide more extensive documentation than other citizens, and has led to waits of up to five years or outright refusals of passports without explanation, the group said.
The government has intensified controls over ethnic minority groups who have protested against Chinese rule, fearing instability in the sensitive border regions in which they live.
The HRW report came a few days after Thailand deported dozens of ethnic minority Uighur Muslims back to China, drawing fierce criticism from several countries.

Medecins Sans Frontieres frantically phoned NATO and Washington as bombs rained down on its staff working in an Afghanistan hospital.
The agency has said at least 16 of its aid workers have been killed - and a further 19 were among the 37 seriously wounded - when the trauma centre was hit during the US strike.
America has admitted it may have killed a number of medics during the air raid in Kunduz, despite being told several times where their hospital was located.
Afghan's Interior Ministry has said there were "10 to 15 terrorists" hiding in the building, which is why it was targeted.
The first bomb landed at 2.10am - and nine minutes later, MSF staff rang NATO's offices in Kabul and military officials in Washington. Despite this, the bombing continued until 3.13am.
The head of US-led forces in Afghanistan has apologised to the president over the bombing, the Reuters news agency reported.
Most of the wounded in the strikes are being transferred to another hospital in Puli Khumri, about two hours away.
MSF says it gave the coordinates of the hospital to US and Afghan forces several times to avoid being caught in crossfire.
"Precise location of our Kunduz hospital communicated to all parties on multiple occasions over past months," as well as earlier this week, the group said on Twitter.
Sediq Sediqi, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, told a news conference there were 105 patients, 80 staff and between 10 and 15 Taliban militants in the hospital when it was struck.
"All of the terrorists were killed, but we also lost doctors. We will do everything to make sure doctors are safe and they can do their jobs," he said.
He added: "There were 80 staff of the hospital that were taken to a safe place. Among the 80, 15 were international staff. All of them are safe... but unfortunately three of the Afghan staff members, they were among the casualties."
Kunduz, the northern provincial capital, has been the scene of fierce battles since it was overrun by the Taliban last Monday.
They have since been driven from the centre, where they briefly raised their flag, but still occupy other parts of the town.
NATO spokesman Colonel Brian Tribus said US forces launched an airstrike on Kunduz at 2.15am on Saturday.
"(It) may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility," he said. "This incident is under investigation."
MSF said the trauma centre was hit several times during sustained bombing and was partially destroyed.
Around 200 patients and employees were in the hospital, the only one in the region that can treat major injuries, at the time.
"We are deeply shocked by the attack, the killing of our staff and patients and the heavy toll it has inflicted on healthcare in Kunduz," the charity's operations director, Bart Janssens, said in a statement.
The US military has carried out a number of air strikes this week in support of government forces in Kunduz, which is the fifth largest city in Afghanistan.
According to Afghan officials, more than 200 Taliban militants have been killed since the latest operation began late on Friday.
Security forces are now conducting searches to weed out any remaining fighters hidden in the city of 300,000 people.
The fall of a strategic town to the Taliban for the first time since the US-led invasion of 2001 has been a major blow to the year-old government of president Ashraf Ghani.
It has also raised questions about the capabilities of the Afghan security forces as they now have to battle the Taliban on their own after the US and NATO ended their combat missions in the country.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) — A series of bombings across Afghanistan, including one targeting a police checkpoint in the country's south, killed at least 13 people Tuesday, authorities said.
The day's deadliest attack targeted the checkpoint on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand province, killing eight people and wounding 23, said Omar Zwak, the spokesman for the provincial governor. The dead included six civilians and two police officers, he said.
Alam Yar, a doctor at a hospital in Lashkar Gah, said 20 wounded people and four dead bodies had been brought there.
A separate roadside bombing killed four people and wounded five, police said.
Afghanistan's army has been fighting to clear large parts of Helmand of Taliban militants. The insurgents have retaliated in recent days with a series of suicide attacks in towns and villages across the province.
In Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan, another bomb exploded near a hospital, killing one civilian and wounding 16, a senior police official said. The official said that the target of the bomb in the provincial capital, Puli Khumri, was a police vehicle, though no police officer was wounded.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity as he wasn't authorized to speak to journalists.
