This fifteen-minute piece takes you on a journey with members of the Rotary Wing Group, the Australians whose job it is to pilot and maintain rotary wing aircraft from their base area at the Kandahar Airfield. In a country where road travel for personnel and supplies is fraught by the danger of IED and ambush, the role aircrews play is essential.
John Martinkus, official cinematographer for the Memorial, interviews members of the Chinook air and maintenance crew, who describe the challenges of flight over Afghanistan, as well as the pattern of everyday routine. With unobtrusive supporting narration, and John's bird's eye view from the cockpit of the Chinook, he follows a complete mission, comprising touch downs at Tarin Kot and various forward patrol bases. This insider perspective affords real insight into what is probably a little known but essential aspect of Australian Defence Forces, bringing a fresh look at the life of Australian rotary crews and of the important role they played in supporting Australia's presence in Afghanistan.
This documentary was made from some of the twenty seven hours of footage shot by John Martinkus during his deployment to Afghanistan in 2011 as the Memorial's official cinematographer.

During a landing in 2009 at Kandahar Airfield, a RAF Harrier slams into the ground causing the aircraft to burst into flames. The pilot managed to control the aircraft until the very last minute before he had to eject. The pilot survived with minor injuries.

There are six Royal Australian Air Force Airfield Defence Guards (ADGs) embedded with the U.S. Air Force 451st Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at Kandahar Airfield supporting the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.
The ADGs are undertaking traditional and new roles including flight line security, vehicle check points, vehicle searches, mounted and dismounted patrols inside the wire and also ‘Guardian Angel’ type roles for Coalition forces.
There are approximately 400 Australian Defence Force personnel deployed across Afghanistan in a variety of roles as part of Operation HIGHROAD contributing to Resolute Support. Resolute Support is focused on training, advising and assisting the Afghan National Security Forces and Afghan security institutions at the operational, institutional and ministerial levels.

Kandahar, occasionally Candahar, or Qandahar, (Pashto: کندهار Kandahār) is the second largest city in Afghanistan, with a population of about 512,200 as of 2011. It is the capital of Kandahar Province, located in the south of the country at about 1,005 m (3,297 feet) above sea level. The Arghandab River runs along the west of the city.
Kandahar is the original and most culturally significant city of the Pashtuns and has always been their traditional seat of power. It is a major trading center for sheep, wool, cotton, silk, felt, food grains, fresh and dried fruit, and tobacco. The region produces fine fruits, especially pomegranates and grapes, and the city has plants for canning, drying, and packing fruit. Kandahar has an international airport and extensive road links with Farah and Herat to the west, Kabul and Peshawar to the northeast, Tarinkot to the north, and Quetta in neighboring Balochistan (Pakistan) to the south.
The region around Kandahar is one of the oldest known human settlements. Alexander the Great is said to have laid-out the foundation of what is now Old Kandahar in the 4th century BC and gave it the Ancient Greek name Αλεξάνδρεια Aραχωσίας (Alexandria of Arachosia). Many empires have long fought over the city due to its strategic location along the trade routes of southern, central and western Asia. In 1709, Mirwais Hotak made the region an independent kingdom and turned Kandahar into the first capital of the Hotaki dynasty. In 1747, Ahmad Shah Durrani, founder of the last Afghan empire, made it the capital of modern Afghanistan.

Robin McLaurin Williams (born July 21, 1951) is an American actor and comedian. Rising to fame with his role as the alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy, and later stand-up comedy work, Williams has performed in many feature films since 1980. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He has also won two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards.
Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Laura McLaurin (née Smith, 1922–2001), was a former model from New Orleans, Louisiana. His father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams (September 10, 1906 – October 18, 1987), was a senior executive at Ford Motor Company in charge of the Midwest region. His maternal great-great-grandfather was senator and Mississippi governor Anselm J. McLaurin. Williams is of English, Welsh, Irish, and French ancestry. He was raised in the Episcopal Church (his mother practiced Christian Science). He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he was a student at the Detroit Country Day School, and later moved to Woodacre, Marin County, California, where he attended the public Redwood High School. Williams studied at Claremont McKenna College (then called Claremont Men's College) for four years. He has two half-brothers: Todd (who died August 14, 2007) and McLaurin.

Airfield Defence Guards at Kandahar Airfield
There are six Royal Australian Air Force Airfield Defence Guards (ADGs) embedded with the U.S. Air Force 451st Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at Kandahar Airfield supporting the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan. The ADGs are undertaking traditional and new roles including flight line security, vehicle check points, vehicle searches, mounted and dismounted patrols inside the wire and also ‘Guardian Angel’ type roles for Coalition forces. This fifteen-minute piece takes you on a journey with members of the Rotary Wing Group, the Australians whose job it is to pilot and maintain rotary wing aircraft from their base area at the Kandahar Airfield. In a country where road travel for personnel and supplies is fraught by the danger of IED and ambush, the role aircrews play is essential.
John Martinkus, official cinematographer for the Memorial, interviews members of the Chinook air and maintenance crew, who describe the challenges of flight over Afghanistan, as well as the pattern of everyday routine. With unobtrusive supporting narration, and John's bird's eye view from the cockpit of the Chinook, he follows a complete mission, comprising touch downs at Tarin Kot and various forward patrol bases. This insider perspective affords real insight into what is probably a little known but essential aspect of Australian Defence Forces, bringing a fresh look at the life of Australian rotary crews and of the important role they played in supporting Australia's presence in Afghanistan.
This documentary was made from some of the twenty seven hours of footage shot by John Martinkus during his deployment to Afghanistan in 2011 as the Memorial's official cinematographer.

There are six Royal Australian Air Force Airfield Defence Guards (ADGs) embedded with the U.S. Air Force 451st Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron at Kandahar Airfield supporting the NATO-led Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan.
The ADGs are undertaking traditional and new roles including flight line security, vehicle check points, vehicle searches, mounted and dismounted patrols inside the wire and also ‘Guardian Angel’ type roles for Coalition forces.
There are approximately 400 Australian Defence Force personnel deployed across Afghanistan in a variety of roles as part of Operation HIGHROAD contributing to Resolute Support. Resolute Support is focused on training, advising and assisting the Afghan National Security Forces and Afghan security institutions at the operational, institutional and ministerial levels.

We spent a few days in Chamonix and tried to capture as much of the resort as possible on camera during our stay. Chamonix is a stunning and vibrant mountain town with centuries of mountaineering history behind it. The town is bustling with excited skiers and climbers and it has a huge variety of fantastic restaurants and a lively nightlife with lots of great bars and nightclubs.
Chamonix boasts 4 fantastic ski areas, Brevent-Flégère being the largest. It's accessed right from the town and the ski area is great for intermediates with lots of blues and easy reds. The Balme ski area is located right at the northern end of the valley and is great for families with children learning to ski and less experienced skiers. Next you have the Grands Montets which is the highest and the most challenging ski area in Chamonix with lots of steeper reds, blacks and some blues and it's located on the Northern side of the valley and accessed from Argentiere. Finally you have Les Houches where, despite hosting the Kandahar FIS downhill skiing every year, you'll find great skiing for families with lots of picturesque tree runs and fantastic views over to St Gervais and up the valley to Chamonix.
Anyone heading to Chamonix must never forget the Aiguille du Midi. It's the highest cable car in Europe and is accessed right from the town. It offers the most stunning views over to Mont Blanc and across the Alps to Geneva and in the other direction across the valley into Italy. It's not a ski area as such, but a 22km off-piste itinerary where intermediate skiers can, if accompanied by a guide, ski the Valley Blanche.
