Kabul - Avalanches triggered by heavy snow have killed more than 100 people in mountainous areas of Afghanistan and the death toll is expected to rise, officials said on Wednesday.
Most of the victims were in Panjshir province north of the capital Kabul, where 95 bodies were recovered according to acting governor Abdul Rahman Kabiri.
The avalanches after two days of heavy snow destroyed more than 100 homes in the province and blocked main roads, making it difficult for rescue workers to reach the stricken villages.
"Ordinary people and government employees are using shovels and bare hands to rescue those who are still trapped under the snow," Kabiri said.
The death toll could rise unless the central government and relief organisations sent emergency assistance soon, he warned.
Twenty-nine people were suffering from frostbite and other injuries, the acting governor said.
The toll was confirmed by Abdul Rahman Kalantari, head of disaster response at the Afghan Red Crescent Society, who said they had already dispatched health teams to Panjshir.
A further 11 people were killed in the provinces of Bamyan, Badghis, Nangarhar and Laghman, officials said.
Deadly avalanches are common in Afghanistan's mountainous areas in winter. One in the remote far northeast in 2012 left 145 people missing, presumed dead.
The country has had a largely mild and dry winter, but large parts of the north experienced heavy snowfall over the last 48 hours.
Parts of the capital Kabul were hit by power cuts on Tuesday and Wednesday after snowstorms and avalanches damaged power cables in the Salang Pass, which links the city to the country's north.
The pass remained closed to traffic on Wednesday.
Despite the billions of dollars in aid from the international community after the collapse of the Taliban in 2001, Afghanistan remains among the world's poorest nations after decades of conflict.
Rescue efforts after disasters such as avalanches and flash floods, which often hit as snows melt in the spring, are frequently hampered by lack of equipment.
Poor infrastructure makes it difficult for rescue teams to reach isolated areas.

My latest book Photographic Memory of Kabul City: A Deployed Geographer’s Perspective will be available on Amazon soon. It chronicles my life and work, from February of 2011 to June of 2012, as a professional geographer and a Department of the Army Civilian in Afghanistan’s capital. Fortunate to conduct extensive fieldwork throughout Kabul Province, I was able to record the area's fascinating cultural landscape with tens of thousands of photographs, approximately 150 of which appear in this manuscript. The book should be of interest to geographers, intelligence professionals and conventional forces, and to anyone interested in reading and learning about Kabul City.

STORYLINE
The Taliban launched a series of coordinated attacks across the Afghan capital and at least three eastern provinces on Sunday, targeting NATO bases, parliament and foreign embassies in a complex assault that showed the insurgents could still penetrate Afghan security and hit Western and government targets in the heart of Kabul.
Suicide bombers and insurgents wielding heavy weapons and rocket-propelled grenades executed the near-simultaneous attacks in what the Taliban called an opening salvo ahead of the spring fighting season, when warmer weather typically brings increased attacks.
The attacks, the most widespread in the Afghan capital since September, came as the US-led international force is speeding up the transfer of security responsibility to the Afghans in preparation for an end to NATO''s combat mission in 2014.
The scale and scope of the violence underscored the challenge that Afghan security forces have in protecting even the country''s centres of power.
The Taliban claimed that Afghan and foreign troops suffered heavy casualties, but reports from Afghan authorities showed the assaults were noisy, but not deadly.
The Ministry of Interior reported that 17 militants were killed in the attacks in Kabul, Paktia, Nangarhar and Logar provinces.
Seventeen police - 11 in Kabul and three each in Logar and Paktia provinces - were wounded, the ministry said.
Eyewitnesses described the attack.
"I was in my workshop and I heard the sound of shooting. I saw two men come down from a black-glassed Land Cruiser, they were wearing local clothes, one of them opened fire on a policeman and killed him," Ahmad Zaki said.
Mohammad Nasir said that he saw an explosion.
"Then we learned that four policemen have been killed, the bodies of three of them were in a garden and another body was in a field over there," he added.
Fourteen civilians also were injured in the attacks.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the attacks were a kind of "message" to the Afghan and foreign forces, warning them the insurgents remain strong and resilient.
So far this year, 105 NATO service members have been killed in Afghanistan.

An Afghan official says a roadside bombing has killed seven people in a province east of Kabul. Din Mohammad Darwish, spokesman for the Logar provincial governor, says the attack happened on Friday morning in Baraki Barak district when a vehicle that two families were riding in struck a roadside bomb. Darwish blamed the Taliban for planting the bomb. He says four women, two children and a man were among the dead. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but roadside bombs have been a weapon of choice for Taliban insurgents for many years. They are often used to target officials and members of the security forces but also kill many civilians.

The Gun Markets of Pakistan
In 2006, Suroosh Alvi was one of a handful of journalists who was able to get into the massive guns market in Pakistan's tribal areas -- home base for the Taliban since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He returned to Pakistan this month and found the entire country was a "powder keg ready to explode."

Hey everyone!
it's been a very very long time since I've uploaded anything on here but last month (september) I went to Afghanistan for 7 days to visit my dad and spend my 25th birthday with him since I was living in Dubai which is only a 3 hour flight to Kabul. When I travel to Afghanistan I stay in Kabul for the majority of my trip which is exactly what happened this time BUT I did manage to take a day trip to Panjshir Province. Panjshir is where my family is originally from, my mother was born there, my grandparents from both sides, etc...I thought about vlogging my trip because I figured Afghanistan is an interesting country that not many people have the chance to visit but once I arrived I was really just so caught up with seeing family and spending time with my dad that I kept forgetting to film everything with my camera... Also, now that snapchat is around it's much easier to use for traveling and what not... anyway, this video isn't an actual vlog it's just random clips on our way to Panjshir (which is a 3 hour drive from Kabul) The video has clips of the stops we made to reach our destination and the views. I don't explain much of anything in the video so if you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comment section below.
Thank you for watching!

Thousands of Muslims in Afghanistan and Pakistan protested against French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo on Friday.
The protesters accused Charlie Hebdo's publishers of blasphemy and called for the French government to apologise after the newspaper published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
The Afghan demonstrations in the capital, Kabul, and the western city of Herat took place after Friday prayers.
Different Pakistani political, religious and social organisations also protested against the caricatures.
In Karachi the Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam (JUI) and Jamaat Ahle Sunnat, among others, held their own separate rallies.
An attack on Charlie Hebdo's Paris office on 7 January killed 12 people.
Many across the Muslim world have protested against the satirical weekly's first issue after the attack, which shows a drawing of a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding a sign saying "Je suis Charlie (I am Charlie, a solidarity slogan following the attack)".

STORYLINE:
French troops based in an eastern region of Afghanistan handed responsibility for security there to Afghan forces during a ceremony on Tuesday.
The ceremony in Sorubi district, which is part of Kabul province, was attended by high-ranking Afghan and French military officials.
French General Eric Hauteclocque Raysz said the Afghan security forces were now capable of providing security in Kapisa province.
"Their skills are improving and today, for the area of Kapisa and Sorubi, the army and Afghan police are greatly able to ensure security," Raysz said.
The commander for Afghan National Army in eastern Afghanistan, Army General Mohammad Zaman Waziri, said the situation in the area was under control.
"Right now there is nothing serious or anything to be concerned about," Waziri said.
The recently elected French President Francois Hollande campaigned on a promise to pull all of France's combat troops out of Afghanistan by the end of the year - well before the 2014 goal for the majority of NATO combat troops to leave the country.
The French government has said that 2-thousand French combat troops would be withdrawn, but around 1,400 soldiers would be left to help with training and logistics until the NATO combat mission ends in 2014.

STORYLINE:
Three insurgents attacked a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) base on the outskirts of Afghanistan's capital Kabul on Saturday but were killed by coalition forces before they could enter the compound, NATO and Afghan police said.
The attack came just hours after Afghan protesters, angry over the burning of a Quran at a US church, stormed a United Nations compound in northern Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners.
NATO told The Associated Press in an email that three of its soldiers were wounded in Saturday's attack against Camp Phoenix, but that their injuries were not serious.
The coalition said at least one attacker was possibly wearing a suicide vest.
It added that the attack had ended.
Kabul provincial Police chief General Mohammad Ayub Salangi said there were reports of three attackers being involved and that two of them died when their vests detonated.
He said a third was shot.
The gate of the base had scorch marks on it, and an Associated Press reporter at the scene saw some of the remains of at least one body belonging to a man who had blown himself up dangling from the gate.
Mohammad Zahir, Chief of Criminal Investigation Department of Kabul Police, said, "Four attackers wearing burqas (the all-encompassing turquoise-coloured garment worn by many women in Afghanistan) started shooting at Camp Phoenix trying to enter the camp. Right away the soldiers from Camp Phoenix and Afghan police reacted and as a result of a gun battle two of the attackers blew themselves up and one of them got killed."
He added that the fourth attacker might still be at hiding in the vicinity of the camp.
Camp Phoenix is a base on the eastern edge of Kabul used mostly by American forces to help train the Afghan army and police.
On Friday, Afghans angry over the burning of a Quran at a small Florida church stormed a United Nations compound in northern Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including four Nepalese guards.
Afghan authorities suspect insurgents melded into the mob.
They announced the arrest of more than 20 people, including a militant they suspect was the ringleader of Friday's assault in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital of Balkh province.
Four protesters also died in the violence in Mazar-i-Sharif, which is on a list of the first seven areas of the country where Afghan security forces are slated to take over from the US-led coalition starting in July.
The topic of Quran burning stirred outrage among (m) millions of Muslims and others worldwide after the Reverend Terry Jones' small church, Dove Outreach Center, threatened to destroy a copy of the holy book last year.
The pastor backed down, but the church in Gainesville, Florida, went through with the burning last month.

Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah said on Thursday he hoped the Netherlands would increase the number of troops it contributes to NATO's International Security Assistance Force trying to stabilise the country.
He was speaking in Kabul as the Netherlands held a critical parliamentary debate on whether to send up to 1,400 Dutch troops to Afghanistan's dangerous south.
"It has gone for approval to the parliament and we hope we have a positive answer in that respect," Abdullah said.
The Netherlands is supposed to join the new NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) mission in the province of Uruzgan, but its parliament is divided and public support for the deployment is weak.
Speaking about an earlier meeting with members of the Dutch parliament, Abdullah said, "They had some healthy debate and rightful questions of course about the presence of their forces and the circumstances and conditions and so on and so forth."
Political disagreement has held up a decision for months, with opponents citing the high risk of casualties and supporters highlighting the need to contribute to international counter-terrorism efforts and Afghan reconstruction.
The new NATO force will expand the number of troops to 16,000 to allow the US to pull out some of its military.
The Netherlands risks tarnishing its international reputation if it backs down at this late stage in planning - it has already promised its NATO allies it would participate in the mission to rebuild the volatile Uruzgan region.
The UN-mandated ISAF was launched in 2002 in the capital, Kabul, for peacekeeping duties and to coordinate reconstruction projects.

A Turkish military helicopter crashed into a house near the Afghan capital on Friday, killing 12 Turkish soldiers on board and two girls on the ground, Turkish and Afghan officials said.
The helicopter, a Sikorsky, was on a mission for US-led NATO forces when it went down near Kabul, the Turkish military said in a statement.
"Twelve of our military personnel on board were martyred," it said.
According to an ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) spokesman, there was no enemy activity in the area at the time of the crash.
"The cause of the crash is currently under investigation," said US Army Lieutenant Colonel Jimmie E. Cummings.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the helicopter was one of two that took off on Friday.
He said there were officers and non-commissioned officers on board.
According to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, it appeared that the helicopter crashed while trying to make an emergency landing and that the pilot tried to avoid houses.
The helicopter clipped one house and then crashed into another, an Afghan resident who witnessed the aircraft go down said.
The crash blew several large holes in the two-story brick house that was hit.
Parts of the building were scorched black by fire, and wreckage of the helicopter was scattered outside.
One piece had a red and white Turkish flag painted on it.
The Afghan Interior Ministry said the two people who were killed on the ground were young girls.
A woman and another child were wounded, it said.
The aircraft went down in the Hassian Khail area of the Bagrami district of Kabul province.
The crash was the deadliest in Afghanistan for NATO forces since August, when 30 American troops died when a Chinook helicopter was apparently shot down in Wardak province in the centre of the country.
Turkey has about 1,800 troops in Afghanistan and leads NATO operations in Kabul province.

STORYLINE
The likely exit of Dutch troops from Afghanistan leaves a key province in the heart of the nation vulnerable to Taliban infiltration - especially if militants are pushed out of their sanctuaries in the south.
The departure of the Netherlands and Canada, which plans to remove its 2,800 troops from the country next year, could prompt other nations in the NATO alliance to rethink their commitment to the eight-year-old war.
And it underscores the difficulty US President Barack Obama faces in keeping the international contingent intact.
The Dutch serve in Uruzgan province, an area well-known to several insurgent commanders, including Taliban kingpin Mullah Mohammed Omar who once was a cleric in the Dihrawud district.
Moreover, Uruzgan borders Helmand province where 15,000 US, Afghan and NATO forces are in their ninth day fighting insurgents for control of the town of Marjah.
Uruzgan''s provincial governor told The Associated Press on Sunday that the Dutch force is still very much needed in strengthening the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police.
The bulk of Australia''s 1,500 troops in Afghanistan are based in Uruzgan doing reconstruction work and training Afghan security forces, but Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said on Sunday that his country has no plans to fill the vacuum if the Dutch withdraw.
There are more than 44-thousand non-US troops from NATO and partner countries in Afghanistan, compared with more than 74-thousand Americans.
Most European nations, including France and Germany, have been reluctant to substantially boost their troop levels even as the US pours 30-thousand more soldiers in, limiting their contributions mainly to instructors for the Afghan army and police.
Afghan Defence Ministry spokesman General Mohammad Zahir Azimi said that he is counting on the NATO commitment to stay in Afghanistan until Afghan security forces can assume responsibility for some provinces in two or three years.
But he stressed that the NATO commitment was not hinged on one country.
He claimed the issue was ''internal'' between NATO and the Netherlands.

Nagieb Khaja reports from the Taliban stronghold of Charkh, Logar Province.
Though only an hour from Kabul, armed Taliban fighters walk openly in the streets, and government and Western forces are entirely absent. Khaja bears witness to the parallel administration the Taliban has built in Charkh and hears testimony from the population—including from the families of civilian casualties of Afghan National Army bombings.
Khaja is the first Western journalist to film a Taliban Sharia court, where he witnesses a case in which the defendant is a Taliban member and the outcome is surprising. He also visits local boys and girls schools run in concert with the Taliban.
"This is Taliban Country" shows a defiant Taliban determined to continue attacking Afghan National Army bases and keep control of the region.

Late Dr. Kabir Stori - a famous patriotic poet and writer from Kunar, Afghanistan decided on 2005 to go to his home country with his son Nasir Stori. They recorded the nice surrounding, landscape, people and more.
Pashtoon nation has one such name of Dr. Kabir Stori (spelled as Kabeer Storai, Storay, Storae, Storey, Stooray). He was a great poet, intellectual, writer, researcher, thinker and a person whose love for his nation knew no bounds. He was a man of principals and values.
A rhyme of Dr. Kabir Stori translated by Dr. Hatef Mokhtar in English says,
If you come to Stori’s grave sometime, pray for me in Pashto, because I am a lover of Pashto
