Police say they may lay more charges against a man who is on charges of assaulting his daughter.

POLICE could lay further charges against a Launceston man whose baby died on Thursday night.

The 11-week old girl passed away in the Royal Hobart Hospital after she was taken there in a critical condition this week with serious head injuries.

Her father has been charged with criminal code assault by allegedly striking the baby to the back between February 1 and 22.

He faces two other charges of common assault against the baby and one against his wife.

Police will allege the 36-year-old punched his wife and held her to the ground by the throat, strangling her.

The man appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Tuesday and has been remanded in custody until March 9.

He has not been charged with causing the baby’s death.

“Investigations are continuing and further charges may be laid in relation to this matter,” acting Detective Inspector Bob Baker said yesterday.

“The matter has been referred to the Coroner.”
