Palace museum
A palace museum refers a number of museums that are housed in former royal palaces. The most famous example is probably the Forbidden City in Beijing, China. The National Palace Museum in Taipei, Taiwan houses part of its former collection.
The National Palace Museum of Korea located in Seoul, South Korea, is the repository of that country's royal heritage.
The Red Fort Archaeological Museum in Delhi, India, was also known as Palace Museum during the British rule.
The Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum is an example of a palace that was reconstructed to function as a museum.
Many former royal palaces house museums in them, such as the Palace of Versailles in Paris, the Winter Palace in St Petersburg, the Royal Palace, Luang Prabang, the Royal Palace, Porto-Novo, the Museum of King John III's Palace at Wilanów in Warsaw etc.

Forbidden City
The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty—the years 1420 to 1912. It is located in the center of what is now known as Beijing, (formerly Peking) China, and now houses the Palace Museum. It served as the home of emperors and their households as well as the ceremonial and political centre of Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Constructed from 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 72 ha (180 acres). The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world.
Since 1925, the Forbidden City has been under the charge of the Palace Museum, whose extensive collection of artwork and artefacts were built upon the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Part of the museum's former collection is now located in the National Palace Museum in Taipei. Both museums descend from the same institution, but were split after the Chinese Civil War. With over 14 million annual visitors, the Palace Museum is the most visited Museum in the world.

The museum holds paintings, calligraphy, ceramics and antiquities of the imperial collections. In 1987, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The imperial palace is now a public museum where visitors can learn, among other things, about its past as a fortress protecting the ancient city. China’s Palace Museum is expected to triple the number of artefacts on display and hold more annual exhibitions once a massive expansion is completed in Beijing. The century-old museum located in the former imperial palace complex known as the Forbidden City has a collection of nearly 1.9 million cultural relics. But fewer than 10,000 are on public display each year because of a lack of space and adequate exhibit conditions. Construction on the expanded facility started in December 2022 and is expected to be complete by 2025.

1. What is the Forbidden City?
It was the imperial palace and the political heart of China during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368 - 1911).
Now, also known as the Palace Museum, it's a top attraction throughout China.

2. Why is it called the "Forbidden City"?
In the past, commoners were prohibited from entering the Forbidden City without permission and only imperial families and invited high officials can enter. Hence the name.

3. Where is the Forbidden City? How can I get there?
The Forbidden City is situated to the north of Tiananmen Square in the center of Beijing.
The only entrance is the Meridian Gate (South Gate). Tourists can get there easily either by subway or by bus.

No. The Forbidden City is next to Tiananmen Square. You can walk there from the square in a few minutes. First, find the Tiananmen Tower with a portrait of Chairman Mao, pass through the tower and you will see the Meridian Gate.

Upon ascending the throne in 1402, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) intended to move the capital from Nanjing to Beijing, so he ordered the construction of the Forbidden City. 230,000 artisans and millions of laborers participated in the construction.

The history of the Forbidden City begins with a bloody coup at the beginning of the 15th century when the ambitious field commander Prince Zhu Di took power. As the Yongle Emperor, he declared Beijing the new capital of China and ordered the construction of a giant palace complex. The building of the architectural symbol of his almightiness, and the perfect reflection of cosmic order, was finished in only a few years. However, Yongle’s destiny was to be intimately tied to the empire’s collapse.
