He is friendly with Sheela, who works as a maidservant, hopes to marry her someday, much to the chagrin of Kalu Dada, who lusts after Sheela. One night while returning home he comes across an abandoned male baby near Bhagwan Shri Ganesh's Mandir. He looks for the family of this child, asks for help from the Mandir's Poojary, as well as a Mullah and a Hawaldar, all in vain. When he tries to abandon the child, he is literally forced to adopt him, and when he does so, he faces considerable opposition from his neighbors, and ends up hating the child. He neglects the child, and as a result the child gets inflicted with polio. Mahesh has a change of heart, decides to look after the child, names him Hindustan, starts his treatment, gets him crutches, and after facing many hurdles, gets him admitted in Bishop Cotton Junior College. 12 years later Hindustan has grown up, overweight and still dependent on Mahesh and needs a bone stimulant surgery to keep the equal lengths of his limbs. Mahesh needs 1000 Rupees, and attempts to wrestle, Dara, as well as run in a rickshaw race, all in vain, as he is severely beaten and injured by Dara, and Kalu respectively. He decides to work day and night to earn this amount. But before he could even start saving any amount, he is arrested by Police Inspector Ramesh for kidnapping Hindustan, and may end up losing Hindustan to Vinod and Radha, who claim to be his biological parents. Watch what happens when Mahesh is compelled to testify in Court and comes face to face with the witnesses who have come forward to testify against him.

The Early Middle Ages, 284--1000 (HIST 210)
Professor Freedman begins the lecture by considering the ways historians read the Confessions. In this work, St. Augustine gives unique insight into the life of an intellectual mind in Late Antiquity, into the impact of Christianity on the Roman Empire, and into the problems of early Christianity. The three major doctrinal concerns of the early Church were the problem of evil, the soul-body distinction, and issues of sin and redemption. In the Confessions, St. Augustine searches for explanations of these problems first in Manichaeism, then (Neo)Platonism, and finally Christianity.Underlying this narrative are Augustine's ideas of opposition to perfectionism, his exaltation of grace, and the notion of sin as indelible, not solvable.

Beyond Augustine is a church history and theological documentary that examines the free will debate in light of the Early Church and the Gnostics. Did Augustine corrupt the church with Manichean or Gnostic doctrine? Is Calvinism or Reformed Theology really orthodox and historic Christianity, as Calvinists claim? Or are the Calvinists and Augustinians the spiritual descendants of the Gnostics and Manicheans? Were the Pelagians really the heretics in their free will debate with Augustine? These are the type of controversial questions Jesse Morrell examines in this documentary. www.OpenAirOutreach.com

Film Trailer 2- RESTLESS HEART: The Confessions of Augustine.
Filmed in Europe, the first full-length feature movie on Augustine, it uses a historic backdrop to tell the true story of one of the Church's most beloved and well-known Saints. http://www.ignatius.com/Products/RHRT-M/restless-heart.aspx
430 AD. The Roman Empire is beginning to crumble. The Vandals and other marauding tribes spill through the gaps in Roman defenses. And one of the greatest saints of the Christian church stands between his flock and the barbarian invaders. As he attempts to negotiate between the proud Roman authorities and the implacable Vandal king, Bishop Augustine recalls his own life before Christianity...
In this stirring and epic new film on the life of St. Augustine of Hippo, follow the great saint as he rises from his reckless days as a youth to his accomplishments as a renowned but dissolute orator. Though worldly success and riches come his way, including a position in the imperial court of Milan, satisfaction and peace elude him. It takes a confrontation with the Christian bishop Ambrose and the countless prayers offered by his patient mother, Monica, to break through his intellectual pride.
Starring Alessandro Preziosi, Monica Guerritore, Johannes Bandrup, and Franco Nero.

THE EYES SHOW IT: This little guy has a yellow coloration in his eyes which indicates he may have SICKLE CELL DISEASE (SCD). Most of the people with those eyes have it, and some don't even know. We shall be taking him for testing so that he may be helped before all hell breaks loose on this precious boy. SCD is worse in the first 5 years and starting from 10. This has been my experience and I'm quite familiar with this disease.
He also has a terrible case of Jiggers - the big fat, white variety. As you can see, we have a big number of kids at the school waiting to be helped. One little girl (Brenda) entertained us with a Poem about Jiggers! The main cause of this is not wearing shoes.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS DOCUMENTARY: These videos are for educational purposes and this does not entail just getting the education while watching, but it is also very important for future endeavors in research. We believe every video is a building block for the future research efforts because every individual video presents unique features which might interest an individual researcher in the future. In this regard we shall put out as many videos and we can, and this is a very important way to share to the world more about the jigger and what it is doing unnoticed in Africa.
We also hope to encourage financial partnership with our viewers that will enable us to purchase supplies needed to eradicate the Jigger menace in Kenya. We have no corporate or government funding for supplies and expenses and are, instead, supported by kind-hearted donors. For more information, or to donate, visit our website at: http://www.killthejigger.org or to e-mail me personally, use: Jim@killthejigger.org Thank you for helping!
DISCLAIMER: This video contains content that some may find graphic and shocking. It may not be appropriate for young or sensitive viewers. If you are uncomfortable, please do not watch.
REGISTERED CHARITY: Rise Up Society, Kenya, is a Christian non-profit society registered with the Government of Kenya. We are showing God's love in action. Our goal is to help alleviate this jigger infestation suffered by an estimated 1.5 - 2.4 million of the 40 million Kenyans are Jigger Victims. This is a serious situation affecting over 5% of the population.
MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

In this lecture/discussion from my Spring 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class, we begin our study of St. Augustine's classic work On Free Choice of the Will, discussing several aspects of Augustine's approach to Christian philosophy, then moving into the question of theodicy and the problem of evil. We then discuss Augustine's views on what actually is wrong or bad in wrong actions, working through a number of unsatisfactory answers to the question until we arrive at the will, its desires and choice, and the objects to which it gives priority.

Rev Catherine Gross and Patrick Treacy discuss whether War can ever be good. The basic theory, which has arisen within Western culture to evaluate the legitimacy of military action is called 'just war' theory and includes the contributions of philosophers and theologians dating back to Roman times. Just war is a theory often used by Christians to determine whether the decision to go to war and the means used to prosecute that war are just and has been used as a method of evaluating military actions by thinkers as varied as St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and Grotius. Interestingly, most early Christians were largely pacifistic in nature, but with the increasing political influence of the Christian Church, fourth and fifth century theologians began to develop justifications for the use of military force. The first Christian theologian to address the circumstances under which war was legitimate was St. Augustine of Hippo. He stated, 'for a war to be just, it must be fought for the right reasons, and must be waged under rightful authority'. He held that the only reason, which justified war, was the desire for peace. The second major Christian thinker to deal with the issue of war was St. Thomas Aquinas who argued that a war was justified only when it was prosecuted by a lawful authority and when it was undertaken with just cause and the intention to achieve some good or to avoid some evil.

Augustine of Hippo - The City of God (Part 1 of 69)
Amazon.com Review
"Augustine's City of God, a monumental work of religious lore, philosophy, and history, was written as a kind of literary tombstone for Roman culture. After the sack of Rome, Augustine wrote this book to anatomize the corruption of Romans' pursuit of earthly pleasures: "grasping for praise, open-handed with their money; honest in the pursuit of wealth, they wanted to hoard glory." Augustine contrasts his condemnation of Rome with an exaltation of Christian culture. The glory that Rome failed to attain will only be realized by citizens of the City of God, the Heavenly Jerusalem foreseen in Revelation. Because City of God was written for men of classical learning--custodians of the culture Augustine sought to condemn--it is thick with Ciceronian circumlocutions, and makes many stark contrasts between "Your Virgil" and "Our Scriptures." Even if Augustine's prose strikes modern ears as a bit bombastic, and if his polarized Christian/pagan world is more binary than the one we live in today, his arguments against utopianism and his defense of the richness of Christian culture remain useful and strong. City of God is, as its final words proclaim itself to be, "a giant of a book." "--Michael Joseph Gross
B. B. Warfield said, "Augustine [was one of the early founders] of Roman Catholicism and the author of that doctrine of grace which it has been the constantly pursued effort of Roman Catholicism to neutralize, and which in very fact either must be neutralized by, or will neutralize, Roman Catholicism. Two children were struggling in the womb of his mind. There can be no doubt which was the child of his heart. His doctrine of the Church he had received whole from his predecessors, and he gave it merely the precision and vitality which insured its persistence. His doctrine of grace was all his own:it represented the very core of his being . . . it was inevitable, had time been allowed, that his inherited doctrine of the Church, too, with all its implications, would have gone down before it, and Augustine would have bequeathed to the Church, not "problems," but a thoroughly worked out system of evangelical religion. . . . The problem which Augustine bequeathed to the Church for solution, the Church required a thousand years to solve. But even so, it is Augustine who gave us the Reformation. For the Reformation, inwardly considered, was just the ultimate triumph of Augustine's doctrine of grace over Augustine's doctrine of the Church. (Warfield, Calvin and Augustine, 321-22)

Augustine of Hippo - The City of God (Part 65 of 69)
St. Augustine - (354-430), Bishop of Hippo and "Doctor of the Church"
Accepted by most scholars to be the most important figure in the ancient Western church, St. Augustine was born in Tagaste, Numidia in North Africa. His mother was a Christian, but his father remained a pagan until late in life. After a rather unremarkable childhood, marred only by a case of stealing pears, Augustine drifted through several philosophical systems before converting to Christianity at the age of thirty-one. At the age of nineteen, Augustine read Cicero's Hortensius, an experience that led him into the fascination with philosophical questions and methods that would remain with him throughout his life. After a few years as a Manichean, he became attracted to the more skeptical positions of the Academic philosophers. Although tempted in the direction of Christianity upon his arrival at Milan in 383, he turned first to neoplatonism, During this time, Augustine fathered a child by a mistress. This period of exploration, including its youthful excesses (perhaps somewhat exaggerated) are recorded in Augustine's most widely read work, the Confessions.
During his youth, Augustine had studied rhetoric at Carthage, a discipline that he used to gain employment teaching in Carthage and then in Rome and Milan, where he met Ambrose who is credited with effecting Augustine's conversion and who baptized Augustine in 387. Returning to his homeland soon after his conversion, he was ordained a presbyter in 391, taking the position as bishop of Hippo in 396, a position which he held until his death.
Besides the Confessions, Augustine's most celebrated work is his De Civitate Dei (On the City of God), a study of the relationship between Christianity and secular society, which was inspired by the fall of Rome to the Visigoths in 410. Among his other works, many are polemical attacks on various heresies: Against Faustus, the Manichean; On Baptism; Against the Donatists; and many attacks on Pelagianism and Semi-Pelagianism. Other works include treatises On the Trinity; On Faith, Hope, and Love; On Christian Doctrine; and some early dialogues.
St. Augustine stands as a powerful advocate for orthodoxy and of the episcopacy as the sole means for the dispensing of saving grace. In the light of later scholarship, Augustine can be seen to serve as a bridge between the ancient and medieval worlds. A review of his life and work, however, shows him as an active mind engaging the practical concerns of the churches he served.

Augustine is acknowledged as having been one of the most important influences on the development of the western Christianity. The theological system he developed dominated the mediaeval church until the thirteenth century and its influence is still felt today. A large number of his writings have survived and we know a great deal about his life from his Confessions and Revisions; from a contemporary biography, and from his letters, (over 200 of which have survived). His most famous work, Confessions (written about 397), was not intended simply as an autobiography as such. Rather, it is a long prayer of penitence and thanksgiving for the grace of God evidenced during the first 33 years of his life. Numerous modern biographies have been written and so I will sketch only a brief outline of his life.
Aurelius Augustinus was born in the town of Thagaste in North Africa, the son of Patricius and Monica. His father was a pagan until near the time of his death but his mother was a devoted follower of Catholic Christianity. The young Augustine was eager to learn and fascinated with the problem of the origin of evil. When he attempted to find a solution in Scriptures he was disappointed by the coarse and rustic style of his Latin Old Testament compared to the elegance of the Greek classics. So at the age of 19 he joined the sect of the Manichees as a 'hearer' The Manichees were followers of Mani (born 14th April AD 216), a man who formulated what was effectively an amalgam on Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Christianity. He claimed to have been inspired by the same spirit that inspired Zarathustra, Buddha Guatama and Jesus - the Holy Spirit. Mani's teaching would, of course, supersede that of those who preceded him. The Manichees used the Bible to support many of their teachings, claiming that the New Testament had been corrupted by the Judaisers. It centred around a dualism of good and evil and drew extensively on the Genesis account of Adam and Eve.
Having left Africa for Rome Augustine became increasingly dissatisfied with the teachings of the Manichees and turned instead to Neo-platonism. In Rome he was able to use his Manichee contacts to obtain a post in Milan, were he became a catechumen of the church. This act did not indicate any commitment to Christianity, as his Confessions make clear. It was simply the respectable thing to do. However, attending the church there brought him under the ministry of the bishop, Ambrose. Ambrose's allegorical and Platonising interpretation of the Scriptures in the tradition of Origen made a great impression on Augustine, who had been unimpressed by the literal interpretation practised by his mother as we have seen. It is important to note that the Neoplatonists of Milan were in a minority in their spiritualised view of Scripture. The majority of the Church held to the more literal view.
After a long struggle he was converted - the story of which is well known - and baptised by Ambrose in 387. Following the death of his mother Augustine returned to Thagaste. There he might have ended his days in monastic retirement had not the church in the city of Hippo Regius pressed him to help them against the Manichees and Donatists who were opposing them there. This task Augustine, a former Manichee, was well equipped to undertake, and received ordination as bishop of Hippo in 396. Augustine never learned to read Greek and disliked Greek literature and so was restricted in his biblical studies to working with a Latin translation.

Confessions (Latin: Confessiones) is the name of an autobiographical work, consisting of 13 books, by St. Augustine of Hippo, written between AD 397 and AD 398. Modern English translations of it are sometimes published under the title The Confessions of St. Augustine in order to distinguish the book from other books with similar titles.
The work outlines Augustine's sinful youth and his conversion to Christianity. It is widely seen as the first Western autobiography ever written, and was an influential model for Christian writers throughout the following 1000 years of the Middle Ages. It is not a complete autobiography, as it was written in his early 40s, and he lived long afterwards, producing another important work (City of God); it does, nonetheless, provide an unbroken record of his development of thought and is the most complete record of any single person from the 4th and 5th centuries. It is a significant theological work. In the work St. Augustine writes about how much he regrets having led a sinful and immoral life. He discusses his regrets for following the Manichaean religion and believing in astrology. He writes about Nebridius's role in helping to persuade him that astrology was not only incorrect but evil, and St. Ambrose's role in his conversion to Christianity. He shows intense sorrow for his sexual sins, and writes on the importance of sexual morality. The book is thought to be divisible into chapters which symbolize various aspects of the Trinity and trinitarian belief.

Augustine (354-430)
Major works
• City of God
• On Christian Doctrine
• On the Trinity (self-proclaimed most important work)
• Confessions
Importance
• Antiquity's greatest theologian and most important church theologian until the Reformation
• Father of orthodox theology
• Developed theology as an academic discipline
• Council of Carthage decided for Augustine's views on grace and sin and condemned Pelagianism
• Saved when he heard a child say, "Tolle lege" ("take up and read")
• He adopted an amillennial view when Ambrose taught him it was okay to allegorize the OT
Theological/Doctrinal Views
Trinity
• Held to the eternal subordination of the Son
• Distinctions within the Trinity are primarily relational
• Viewed the Holy Spirit as the bond of love
Soteriology
• Augustine is first father to seriously address soteriology; discussed areas such as predestination, original sin, and free will
• Man's election is based upon God's eternal decree of predestination
• Faith itself is a gift of God
• Avoids extremes of Manicheans and Pelagains—both grace and free will are to be affirmed
• Changed views on free will--from free will to free will held captive
• Free will is not lost but incapacitated and can be healed by grace
• The free will of the individual before salvation is only capable of evil—only after regeneration (operative grace) is free will capable of responding positively to God with the aid of continuing grace (co-operative grace)
• God's prevenient grace prepares man's will for justification
• Grace is intimately connected with the sacrament of baptism (thus no salvation w/o baptism)
• His view of justification underwent significant development
• He says "to justify" means to "make righteous" not "declare righteous" (this became the view of the Roman Catholic Church); thus righteousness is "inherent" and not "imputed"
• Justification is an event and a process
• Righteousness is located within man
• His view of justification is close to the Greek concept of justification
• Merit is important but even this comes from God
• By justification, Augustine comes close to understanding the restoration of the entire universe to its original order
• The motif of the "love of God" dominates his theology of justification
• Faith is adherence to the Word of God
Ecclesiology
• Said failed brethren should be accepted back into fellowship
• Said sacraments are not invalid because of a bad administrator (contra Donatists)
Eschatology
• Known as the father of amillennialism

Gospel LK 4:1-13
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.
The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, One does not live on bread alone.” Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.
The devil said to him, “I shall give to you all this power and glory;
for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish. All this will be yours, if you worship me.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “It is written: You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.”
Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God,
throw yourself down from here, for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you, and: With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”
When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
