Joshua Ian "Josh" Schwartz (born August 6, 1976) is an American screenwriter and television producer. Schwartz is best known for creating and executive producing the Fox teen drama series The O.C. Schwartz developed The CW's teen drama series Gossip Girl from the Gossip Girl book series, and co-created NBC's action-comedy-spy series, Chuck.
At 26, he became one of the youngest people in network history to create a network series and run its day-to-day production when he ran The O.C. He currently resides in Los Angeles.
Schwartz was born in 1976 in Providence, Rhode Island to Jewish parents: Steve and Honey Schwartz. His parents were both toy inventors at Hasbro, working on the development of toys such as Transformers and My Little Pony, until they went on to start their own company. Schwartz grew up on the east side of Providence, Rhode Island with a younger brother, Danny, and a younger sister, Katie. Schwartz always had ambitions of being a writer since early childhood. When Schwartz was seven years old, he won an essay-writing contest at sleep-away camp for a review of the recently released movie Gremlins; the opening line was "Spielberg has done it again" and stood out amongst the pile of essays from the other kids. He even had a subscription to the entertainment industry newspaper Variety at age twelve. He attended Providence's private Wheeler School, a coeducational independent day school, for 11 years, graduating with the class of 1994.
The O.C. is an American teen drama television series that originally aired on the Fox network in the United States from August 5, 2003, to February 22, 2007, running a total of four seasons. The series, created by Josh Schwartz, portrays the fictional lives of a group of teenagers and their families residing in the affluent seaside community of Newport Beach, in Orange County, California.
The series centers on Ryan Atwood, a troubled but tough young man from a broken home who is adopted by the wealthy and philanthropic Sandy and Kirsten Cohen. Ryan and his foster brother Seth, a socially awkward yet quick-witted teenager, deal with life as outsiders in the high-class world of Newport Beach. Ryan and Seth spend much time navigating their relationships with girl-next-door Marissa Cooper, Seth's childhood crush Summer Roberts, and the fast-talking loner Taylor Townsend. Storylines deal with the culture clash between the idealistic Cohen family and the shallow, materialistic, and closed-minded community in which they reside. The series includes elements of postmodernism, and functions as a mixture of melodrama and comedy.
Gossip Girl is an American teen drama television series based on the book series of the same name written by Cecily von Ziegesar. The series, created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, originally ran on The CW for six seasons from September 19, 2007 to December 17, 2012. Narrated by the omniscient blogger "Gossip Girl", voiced by Kristen Bell, the series revolves around the fictional lives of privileged adolescents living in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
The series begins with the return of Upper East Side it girl Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) from a "mysterious absence." Gossip Girl reveals that Serena has been away at boarding school in Cornwall, Connecticut, but not everyone welcomes Serena back to Manhattan with open arms. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester), whom creators describe as being "at the center of their chess game," is The queen bee of Constance Saint Jude prep school's social scene. She also happens to be the childhood "best friend" and occasional rival of Serena van der Woodsen. The story also follows scholarship student Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), who is a self-described "outsider" from Brooklyn, Blair's first love and the so-called "golden boy", Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford), and the "bad boy" heir apparent Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick), who is also part of "Manhattan's elite". Other characters of the turbulent Manhattan scene: Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr), Dan's childhood best friend. Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen), Dan's adolescent sister who the 'Queen B' dubs as 'Little J'. Lily van der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford), Serena's mother and heiress, and Rufus Humphrey (Matthew Settle), former 90's band 'Lincoln Hawk' frontrunner and an independent art gallery owner in Manhattan. He is Dan and Jenny's father and primary guardian. Dorota (Zuzanna Szadkowski) is Blair's primary housekeeper since her youth.
