The United States is dealing with a major public health crisis. Over the last decade, heroin-related overdose deaths have nearly quadrupled.
The epicenter of this epidemic is New Hampshire, with the highest rate of young adults abusing opioids in the country. The state is also second to last in the nation on spending for substance abuse programs. Unless New Hampshire residents are able to pay thousands of dollars up front for programs, they're on months-long waiting lists to get in, leaving them vulnerable to fatal overdoses.
In this excerpt, VICE News joins a group therapy session at the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility, where inmates talk about their looming release dates and their biggest challenges in maintaining sobriety.

Nils Frahm steers the new edition of Late Night Tales - a hypnotic voyage through modern and classical composition, experimental electronics, jazz, dub techno, soundtracks and soul.
"I’ve really got off on working on compilations lately. It’s such a wonderful way to delve deep into your music collection. My flat is now crammed with music media of all stripes, from an old hand-cranked 78 phonograph player to 45s and albums on vinyl, my beloved old cassette tape collection, even mini-disks and, lately, WAV and MP3s. It’s all music to me. After spending hours recording from all of these diverse sources, I started to play around with the tunes, layering them, sampling, looping certain parts, extracting phrases and using all the freedom that this allowed me. If I got a little carried away or stepped on anyone’s toes in my quest to do something interesting and original, then I apologise. Some things may have accidentally landed on the wrong speed, while other spooky happening have occurred along the way, whether it’s ghostly additions of reverb and delay or simply subtle edits or reproductions, they've all gone into the magical stew I've tried to create for your pleasure and edification. I can’t tell you how much fun I've had creating this compilation for you but, suffice to say, I hope it will be a nice journey for your mind and heart."

Kieran Hebden (born 1978, Putney, London) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.
Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favour of a more abstract approach—his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation.
Alongside recording his own material, Hebden has also performed remixes for a number of artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Bonobo, Beth Orton, Born Ruffians, Explosions in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Matthew Dear, Sia, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party, Andrew Bird, Kings of Convenience, Battles, Juana Molina, Madvillain, The xx, Foals, and Black Sabbath, as well as producing two albums by psychedelic improvisational group Sunburned Hand of the Man. Hebden's recent output includes a number of improvisational works with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid and collaborations with both Burial and Thom Yorke.

Oprah Winfrey (born Orpah Gail Winfrey; January 29, 1954) is an American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist. Winfrey is best known for her self-titled, multi-award-winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history and was nationally syndicated from 1986 to 2011. She has been ranked the richest African-American of the 20th century, the greatest black philanthropist in American history, and was for a time the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world.
Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. She experienced considerable hardship during her childhood, claiming to be raped at age nine and becoming pregnant at 14; her son died in infancy. Sent to live with the man she calls her father, a barber in Tennessee, Winfrey landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime-talk-show arena, and after boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place, she launched her own production company and became internationally syndicated.

"I’ve really got off on working on compilations lately. It’s such a wonderful way to delve deep into your music collection. My flat is now crammed with music media of all stripes, from an old hand-cranked 78 phonograph player to 45s and albums on vinyl, my beloved old cassette tape collection, even mini-disks and, lately, WAV and MP3s. It’s all music to me. After spending hours recording from all of these diverse sources, I started to play around with the tunes, layering them, sampling, looping certain parts, extracting phrases and using all the freedom that this allowed me. If I got a little carried away or stepped on anyone’s toes in my quest to do something interesting and original, then I apologise. Some things may have accidentally landed on the wrong speed, while other spooky happening have occurred along the way, whether it’s ghostly additions of reverb and delay or simply subtle edits or reproductions, they've all gone into the magical stew I've tried to create for your pleasure and edification. I can’t tell you how much fun I've had creating this compilation for you but, suffice to say, I hope it will be a nice journey for your mind and heart."

"The source of 'Ultimate Care II' is the household washing machine of Matmos, Whirlpool's 'top loading, high efficiency washing system, with easy to use consoles, making it simple to select the wash/spin speed combination for each load.' The entire album was sourced by the duo's capturing, cutting, and manipulation of the sounds generated from the machine, allowing the sounds to have their own existence. The video echos this process, separating the machine from it's intended domestic position. An animated model of a washing machine is often shown as isolated, orbiting in a screen of black, while undergoing material transformation- it is a visual equivalency to acousmatic sound. The hard, white facade of the machine undergoes a material change, warping, melting, and bending at the inclination of body parts, bodies at work, captured from washing machine pornography. The domestic is work, just as sex is work, all inclusive in the industry of sterility." - Max Eilbacher

Voice experiment rap/song excerpt "Chimera Flow"
So I made a character and I thought it'd be cool to experiment with rapping and singing under this character theme. So here is an excerpt from that experiment. "Loh, The Chiemra" is the character and he is an assassin for a place called Steel Dawn. I used the beat from Golden by Tyler The Creator off of his "Goblin" cd. I really dig the lyrics towards the end. I very much enjoy coming up with good ones. If you didn't catch it btw, the different voices represent the three heads of the chimera. One grunty/growly like a lion-- another smooth like a snake, and finally the funny sounding goat voice(my favorite). -

The Trial of Adolf Eichmann (Excerpt, Final Portion)
This is the final 44 minutes of the 1997 PBS documentary detailing the main points of the Adolf Eichmann trial in which a panel of three Israeli judges listened to testimony, weighed evidence and came to an inevitable verdict. This man was personally responsible for the systematic murder of numerous European Jews whom he viewed as worthless. Remorseless and defiant to the last, he denied the supposition that God's laws apply to everyone equally or that everyone has an equal right to life itself. He was executed on 6/1/62. Note: a witness mentions his daughter having worn a red coat on her way to a death camp. This story was borrowed and added to the movie Schindler's List. Thoughtful comments only, please. Frans Elsen was a very important Dutch pianist, arranger and educator of Jazz. He and Barry shared a mutual appreciation of each others music and were close friends. This material has been edited and selected by Frans himself. It gives a unique insight in Barry's wonderful ways of teaching and his extraordinary musicianship. ABOUT THE PIECE:
Timber is an evening-length tour de force scored for six graduated wooden Simantras — percussion instruments devised by French composer Iannis Xenakis. The work brings the physicality, endurance and technique of percussion performance to a new level. Here, Gordon shapes the music in both polyrhythmic and dynamic waves of textures — often each players' hands are in separate rhythmic 'worlds,' each traversing a different dynamic contour from loud to soft to loud, similar in some respects to his solo for percussion, XY.
Much of Gordon's music demonstrates a deep exploration into the extreme possibilities and stunning nature of rhythm, as well as the enriching, yet disturbing, multi-dimensionality of polyrhythmic layers — what has been termed in his music to be "glorious confusion." Timber takes these elements and explores the extreme possibilities of rhythm and texture to a beautifully intense degree. The new evening-length work is a unique and exciting addition to the world of percussion.
Timber was commissioned by the dance company Club Guy and Roni, Slagwerkgroep den Haag and Mantra Percussion.

This man was personally responsible for the systematic murder of numerous European Jews whom he viewed as worthless. Remorseless and defiant to the last, he denied the supposition that God's laws apply to everyone equally or that everyone has an equal right to life itself. He was executed on 6/1/62.
Note: a witness mentions his daughter having worn a red coat on her way to a death camp. This story was borrowed and added to the movie Schindler's List.

This is brief interview #20 (disc 4, tracks 1-13) of David Foster Wallace's book "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men." Narrated by David Foster Wallace.
I've owned this audiobook for a few years now and this fictional story is the one that was burnt into my mind after first listening to it. Now, a few years later, I listened to the entire audiobook again, and this piece a couple of times, and decided, with reservations, to go ahead and post it up for others to consider.
Note: While I have not watched the movie adaptation of this book, I looked online and found the portion that includes this particular interview, reduced down to a mere 9 minutes. Didn't do justice to the story AT ALL and was a waste of time, IMO. Once you listen to this story and envision everything for yourself, the film's depiction seems all wrong and so bland.
