It was a good book because it was an honest book, and that's what war does to men. And there's nothing fine and noble about dying in the mud unless you die gracefully. And then it's not only noble but brave.
Gil: You can fool me, but you cannot fool Ernest Hemingway!
Gil: What is it with this city? I need to write a letter to the Chamber of Commerce.

Modigliani, a Jew, has fallen in love with Jeanne, a young and beautiful Catholic girl. The couple has an illegitimate child, and Jeanne's bigoted parents send the baby to a faraway convent to be raised by nuns. Modigliani is distraught and needs money to rescue and raise his child. The answer arrives in the shape of Paris' annual art competition. Prize money and a guaranteed career await the winner. Neither Modigliani, nor his dearest friend and rival Picasso have ever entered the competition, believing that it is beneath true artists like themselves. But push comes to shove with the welfare of his child on the line, and Modigliani signs up for the competition in a drunken and drug-induced tirade. Picasso follows suit and all of Paris is aflutter with excitement at who will win. With the balance of his relationship with Jeanne on the line, Modigliani tackles this work with the hopes of creating a masterpiece, and knows that all the artists of Paris are doing the same.

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, also known as Pablo Picasso ; 25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973), was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the Bombing of Guernica by the German and Italian airforces at the behest of the Spanish nationalist government during the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp are regarded as the three artists who most defined the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.
Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a naturalistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His work is often categorised into periods. While the names of many of his later periods are debated, the most commonly accepted periods in his work are the Blue Period (1901–1904), the Rose Period (1904–1906), the African-influenced Period (1907–1909), Analytic Cubism (1909–1912), and Synthetic Cubism (1912–1919).
Exceptionally prolific throughout the course of his long life, Picasso achieved universal renown and immense fortune for his revolutionary artistic accomplishments, and became one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.
Picasso was baptised Pablo, Diego, José, Francisco de Paula, Juan Nepomuceno, Maria de los Remedios, Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad, a series of names honouring various saints and relatives. Added to these were Ruiz and Picasso, for his father and mother, respectively, as per Spanish law. Born in the city of Málaga in the Andalusian region of Spain, he was the first child of Don José Ruiz y Blasco (1838–1913) and María Picasso y López. Despite being baptised Catholic, Picasso would later on become an atheist. Picasso's family was middle-class. His father was a painter who specialised in naturalistic depictions of birds and other game. For most of his life Ruiz was a professor of art at the School of Crafts and a curator of a local museum. Ruiz's ancestors were minor aristocrats.
Picasso showed a passion and a skill for drawing from an early age. According to his mother, his first words were "piz, piz", a shortening of lápiz, the Spanish word for "pencil". From the age of seven, Picasso received formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. Ruiz was a traditional academic artist and instructor, who believed that proper training required disciplined copying of the masters, and drawing the human body from plaster casts and live models. His son became preoccupied with art to the detriment of his classwork.
The family moved to A Coruña in 1891, where his father became a professor at the School of Fine Arts. They stayed almost four years. On one occasion, the father found his son painting over his unfinished sketch of a pigeon. Observing the precision of his son's technique, an apocryphal story relates, Ruiz felt that the thirteen-year-old Picasso had surpassed him, and vowed to give up painting, though paintings by him exist from later years.
In 1895, Picasso was traumatised when his seven-year-old sister, Conchita, died of diphtheria. After her death, the family moved to Barcelona, where Ruiz took a position at its School of Fine Arts. Picasso thrived in the city, regarding it in times of sadness or nostalgia as his true home. Ruiz persuaded the officials at the academy to allow his son to take an entrance exam for the advanced class. This process often took students a month, but Picasso completed it in a week, and the jury admitted him, at just 13. The student lacked discipline but made friendships that would affect him in later life. His father rented a small room for him close to home so he could work alone, yet he checked up on him numerous times a day, judging his drawings. The two argued frequently.

Pablo Picasso is born in Malaga on October 25, 1881 the son of the painter and drawing teacher José Ruiz Blasco. He attends the Art Academy La Lonja in Barcelona in 1895, where his father also teaches. Picasso studies at the Madrid Academy in 1897. He travels to Paris in 1900, where he has his first one-man show with Ambroise Vollard.
Picasso's early work begins with the melancholic pictures of the "Blue Period". The cheerful "Rose Period" follows from 1905 to 1907, a period in which his circus paintings were made. The painting "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" marks the beginning of Cubism in 1907, which Pablo Picasso develops together with Georges Braque and that can be separated into two categories, the "analytical Cubism" and the "synthetic Cubism".
Picasso gets to know Fernande Olivier in 1904. His women also play a big role for his artistic oeuvre, they are his lovers, his models and his muses. Their facial features appear in many of his works. Fernande is followed by the dancer Olga Koklowa, whom he meets while working on designs for Sergej Diaghilew's "Ballets Russes". Around 1917 Picasso was also working as costume andstage designer for Jean Cocteau's ballet "Parade".
Pablo Picasso's works after 1918 can not be clearly categorized in terms of stylistic terminology, it contains objective-realistic, classicist, symbolistic, surreal and also abstracts elements. The artist takes on what is already there, familiarizes himself with it and breaks new grounds in terms of composition, finding inspiration in his own reality and motifs that surround him.
Picasso meets Marie-Thérèse Walter in 1927, she also becomes his lover and muse at the same time. Besides paintings, a vast graphic oeuvre is created, such as first series of etchings. Picasso makes more and more sculpture as of 1928, as well as mixed media objects with wires and assemblages.
Picaso executes the large-size painting "Guernica" for the Spanish pavilion at the world exhibition in Paris in 1937, a haunting anti-war painting, which is seen as the key work of art of the 20th century. The photographer Dora Maar, his new lover, captures the painting's creation.
Françoise Gilot enters Picaso's life in 1943. As of 1945 the lithography becomes the predominant graphic technique. Picasso makes objects of utility and pottery objects in the town of Vallauris in South France as of 1947.
He purchases the Castle of Vauvenargues in Provence in 1958, making it a place of retreat for the aging genius. Picasso marriages Jacqueline Roque in 1961. He dies in Mougins on April 8, 1973.
The Museo Picasso is opened in Barcelona as early as in 1963, which gets most of his estate after his death. The Musée Picasso in Paris is opened in 1985.

a great song from CITIZEN COPE's The Clarence Greenwood Recordings album
The woman that I love
Is forty feet tall
She's a movie star
She's all in the papers
And everywhere i go
People hand me quarters
And they pat me on the back
They treat me like im famous
I'll never leave her side
'Cause today can be dangerous
And when the night arrives
The light hit her features
And the cars drive by
Just so they could see her
And she never bats an eye
When someone takes her picture
Mr.Officer if you've come to take her
Then that means one of us
Gonna end up in a stretcher
Gonna end up in the papers, going end up in the papers, yeah
If i had a pistol
I'd brandish it and wave it
She's the only one alive that knows that I'm not crazy
She's gonna testify on my behalf
Down at the Navy
So I can get some peace
And provide for my babies
I got a stick and a bottle
I'll pretend I got a razor
Helicopters and cameras all shootin' for the station
They say that a wild man defending his lady
But for some odd reason they keep calling you a painting

I keep reading about people arguing if Picasso was a great artist or not...If a painter paints a flower upside down and all others tells him that this is amazing, than, that painter will always paint that flower upside down. Picasso did the opposite. He was always in search for something new, he started with cubism, than abstractionism, surrealism, and his Blue and Rose Periods had a huge influenc

Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, known as Pablo Picasso (25 October 1881 -- 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, and stage designer who spent most of his adult life in France. As one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is widely known for co-founding the Cubist movement, the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-invention of collage, and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907), and Guernica (1937), a portrayal of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.
Picasso, Henri Matisse and Marcel Duchamp are regarded as the three artists who most defined the revolutionary developments in the plastic arts in the opening decades of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting, sculpture, printmaking and ceramics.
Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century, his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune, making him one of the best-known figures in 20th-century art.
Picasso's training under his father began before 1890. His progress can be traced in the collection of early works now held by the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, which provides one of the most comprehensive records extant of any major artist's beginnings. During 1893 the juvenile quality of his earliest work falls away, and by 1894 his career as a painter can be said to have begun. The academic realism apparent in the works of the mid-1890s is well displayed in The First Communion (1896), a large composition that depicts his sister, Lola. In the same year, at the age of 14, he painted Portrait of Aunt Pepa, a vigorous and dramatic portrait that Juan-Eduardo Cirlot has called "without a doubt one of the greatest in the whole history of Spanish painting."
Picasso's Blue Period (1901--1904) consists of somber paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. This period's starting point is uncertain; it may have begun in Spain in early 1901, or in Paris in the second half of the year. Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date from this period. In his austere use of color and sometimes doleful subject matter -- prostitutes and beggars are frequent subjects -- Picasso was influenced by a trip through Spain and by the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas. Starting in autumn of 1901 he painted several posthumous portraits of Casagemas, culminating in the gloomy allegorical painting La Vie (1903), now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The Rose Period (1904--1906) is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colors, and featuring many circus people, acrobats and harlequins known in France as saltimbanques. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso. Picasso met Fernande Olivier, a model for sculptors and artists, in Paris in 1904, and many of these paintings are influenced by his warm relationship with her, in addition to his increased exposure to French painting. The generally upbeat and optimistic mood of paintings in this period is reminiscent of the 1899--1901 period (i.e. just prior to the Blue Period) and 1904 can be considered a transition year between the two periods.

I keep reading about people arguing if Picasso was a great artist or not...If a painter paints a flower upside down and all others tells him that this is amazing, than, that painter will always paint that flower upside down. Picasso did the opposite. He was always in search for something new, he started with cubism, than abstractionism, surrealism, and his Blue and Rose Periods had a huge influence in modern art. If you all judge a painter if it's good or not by how well and realistic he draws or paints, than you should check his younger creations...he paint in that manner to. Since the invention of photography, most of the artist found themselves without a job, who wants a painting portrait that might took even a year or two to develop when you could have one by photographing yourself in just few minutes, so the artist had to reinvent themselves by searching something new. Brancusi or Giacometti did the same thing in sculpture, Gaudi or Gropius encourage something new in architecture, and that's why they deserve to be where they are now in the history of art. I'm not saying that Picasso was a great artist, most certainly not in my top ten list, but the media made him what it is, because they saw in him a future potential of making money...allot of them, that's why we see now how works by Picasso break world records at Christie's or Sotheby's

Visite Picasso is a classic documentary by dir. Paul Haesaerts which features the frequently used footage of Picasso painting on glass while a camera films him from the other side. The trick of filming thru glass allows the viewer to witness Picasso's true genius as he paints his famous Torros with just a few well-placed brushstrokes. Shot in beautiful black and white in Picasso's home in Vallauris, the film is a poetic treatment of the master-painter. This captivating film is a must see for anyone interested in art.

Maurizio Pollini
Pollini was born in Milan, his father being the Italian rationalist architect Gino Pollini. Maurizio studied piano first with Carlo Lonati, until the age of 13, then with Carlo Vidusso, until he was 18. He received a diploma from the Milan Conservatory and won both the International Ettore Pozzoli Piano Competition in Seregno (Italy) in 1959 and the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1960. Arthur Rubinstein who led the jury declared Pollini the winner of the competition, saying: "that boy can play the piano better than any of us" [1]. Soon afterward he studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
Since the mid-1960s, he has given recitals and appeared with major orchestras in Europe, the United States, and the Far East. He made his American debut in 1968 and his first tour of Japan in 1974.
In 1985, on occasion of Bach's tricentennial, he performed the complete first book of The Well-Tempered Clavier. In 1987 he played the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos in New York with the Vienna Philharmonic under Claudio Abbado and received on this occasion the orchestra's Honorary Ring. In 1993/1994 he played his first complete Beethoven Piano Sonata cycles in Berlin and Munich and later also in New York, Milan, Paris, London and Vienna. At the Salzburg Festival in 1995 he inaugurated the "Progetto Pollini", a series of concerts in which old and new works are juxtaposed. An analogous experience was done at Carnegie Hall in 2000/2001 with "Perspectives: Maurizio Pollini".
