What to See & Do in Bitola, Macedonia
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode, David takes us around Macedonia to show us what to see and do in Bitola.
The city of Bitola is a mix of ancient and modern traditions. It is small enough to easily explore by foot, and will give you the opportunity to get very familiar Macedonian culture. Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient site just 2 kilometers from Bitola. It is known for its Greek and Roman architecture, especially its colorful mosaic floors, which are exceptional examples of early Christian art. Don’t forget to admire the amphitheater during your visit to the site.
Magnolia Square is the main square of Bitola. There are several landmarks surrounding the square: Mosque, the Clock Tower, statue of Phillip II of Macedon (in the center of the square) and the beginning of Sirok Sokak, the main pedestrian boulevard of the city.
While exploring around Bitola, you have to stroll through the Old Bazaar. This is one of the city’s most important cultural and social meeting points. Stop at the fruit and vegetable market of the Old Bazaar. It’s really quite colorful and lively. See what produce is in season when you go!
The Old Bazaar is a place to get daily errands done and a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs. Next up on David’s tour is the Museum of Bitola, which holds ancient artifacts and memorabilia from the Balkan struggle for independence. The museum itself used to be a military academy. There are several exhibits and halls dedicated to the academy's most famous student - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, also known as the first president of Turkey and “Father of the Turks”.
Sirok Sokak Street is the perfect place to get a coffee and people watch. It’s a Must-Do when in Bitola. If you don’t, it’s like you were never here.
Right outside the city (5-minute drive) is the village of Dihovo, which is a great place to visit on a day trip. Villa Dihovo is a unique experience for all who visit. If you choose to come here to dine, you’ll enjoy a pleasant array of Macedonian specialties and refreshing salads made from vegetable grown on the property. Villa Dihovo is also a bed and breakfast. The only thing with a fixed price here is the alcohol, which is definitely something you don’t see every day.
David also visited a bee farm in Dihovo and was able to try the honey straight out of the comb. The bee farm also sells honey in jars, which is a great gift to take back home with you. Give yourself an extra day in Bitola so you want to enjoy the flora and fauna of nearby Pelister National Park. Hiking is the most popular activity here.
So if you’re ready to dive into Macedonian history and cuisine, consider stopping in Bitola for a few days to take in its rich culture and friendly people.

Bitola was an important junction connecting the south of the Adriatic Sea with the Aegean Sea and Central Europe; an important consulate city, trade center for the Roman Empire and second largest city in Macedonia.
Unfortunately, we only had one hour in lively Bitola that has many historic sights to see as well as a pedestrian street lined with restaurants and cafes. This walking area led past wonderful Art Deco architecture that is, believe it or not, undamaged.
There is an imposing Statue of King Phillip II, Clock tower, an old Bedestan, synagogue which we could not manage to locate and a Film Festival is held yearly, dedicated to the Monarki brothers who went to California in 1903-1904 and came back with the first movie camera. Definitely not enough time in Bitola.

Travel video about destination Macedonia.
Macedonia is a young Balkan republic that is a combination of both Orient and Occident. Skopje is the capital of Macedonia and is located in the Vardar River Valley. It has a dramatic history that spans many thousands of years and forms the junction of two trading routes in southeast Europe that unite both western and eastern civilisation. The legacy of Ottoman times is omnipresent in Skopje. One of the city’s most well-preserved mosques is that of the Gazi-Isisa-Bey Djamia and in the seventeenth century it is believed that there were up to a hundred and twenty mosques in the city. Ottoman rule began in 1392 and lasted for more than five hundred years. Near the village of Glumovo is the Bogorodica Monastery that was founded in the fourteenth century and is active again today. The mediaeval frescos on the walls and ceilings are well preserved after five centuries. Southwest of Prilep is the ancient city of Stibera that is also known as Macedonian Pompeii. It is in a good location on an important road. The last Macedonian king, Perseus, had his military headquarters in Stibera during his struggles with Rome. In the south, just a few kilometres from the Greek border, is Bitola, at the foot of Pelister Mountain and on the edge of the fertile Pelagonija Plains. Buildings with Neo-Baroque and Renaissance facades, huge mosques and splendid diplomatic residences indicate the city’s importance. Macedonia is a wild land full of natural splendour and with a long and dramatic history that is well worth more than just a flying visit. Indeed, this visit also features a Galička wedding that is a fine example of colourful tradition and local culture.

The inspiration of Aristotle ( 384 322 BC ) combined with the valour of Alexander the great ( 356 323 BC ) firmly entrenched the Macedonian empire. In the sub-continent under the tutelage of Chanakya ( 350 283 BC ) the Mauryan empire was born with Chandragupta Maurya ( 340 298 BC ) as the emperor by vanquishing the Nanda empire. In 325 BC it is speculated that Chandragupta Maurya closely observed the Macedonian Army of Alexander in Taxila. The young Chandragupta was ambitious and with fire in his belly to overthrow the Nanda tyrant. After reasonably mastering the technique of Macedonian warfare which had superior edge over the Indian rulers. He approached Alexander the great to invade Magadh and defeat the tyrant king. But Alexander refused to trudge another 1000 km to reach Magadh. Alexander smelt the rebellion in his ranks and had to return because of mutiny in his forces which was feeling homesick.
After the demise of Alexander in 323 BC Chandragupta overturned the garrison stationed at Taxila. He influenced some greek soldiers to join the ranks of his army on promise of huge rewards. The army trained on the lines of Macedonian warfare with field cavalry lead by elephant and horses. The cavalry was fortified with long spears. Chankya joined the ranks as the chief advisor to Chandragupta Maurya. He revealed the Achilles heel of Nanda army. Thus the deadly combination of valour and wisdom defeated the Nanda king and vanquished him in the battle.

http://www.aswetravel.com/its-in-the-little-things-skopje-macedonia/ Skopje Macedonia. Europe
We’ve just taken an overnight train from Belgrade down to Macedonia, and we’re going to get off in Skopje soon. Well I don’t know how long till we’re there. We should be there about an hour ago. But like usual down here, trains are always a few hours late leaving and arriving. I had a good sleep though. We got a smaller compartment this time. Last time we had sick people in the room. We’ve only got two this time so it’s perfect. I actually slept pretty good. So we left our backpacks back at the hostel, and it’s still pretty early so we’re going to start exploring the city today.
When most backpackers or tourists come to Macedonia, they don’t see Skopje as a final destination. Most of them come here, the first thing they want to do is leave. We haven’t heard that many good reviews about the city as a city, but we decided to stay here. We decided to stay here, explore and see what Skopje has to offer. We’re walking over the stone bridge here, it’s one of the few attractions here in Skopje. And just looking over the bridge, you can see there’s a lot of construction work going on, from a building over there, there’s some sort of fountain down there, and over there. And it seems to me that Skopje’s a bit sick of people coming and leaving straight away, and they seem to be recreating the main city area here by adding new buildings, attractions like this. So it could be nice to come back in six months to see what they actually created here in the center of town.
This is a part of Skopje that we had heard about, Carsija. It’s the old part of town. It’s also one of the best preserved examples of urban Ottoman architecture. There’s also a bazaar around the corner, so we’re going to go and check that out now. This is a really bustling market, and it has been for centuries. This used to be the meeting point where Muslims and Christian people, who used to live in separate parts of the city, came to do their shopping. During the Europe Train Challenge, it’s been our mission to taste a local dish in every single country. During the last four countries, it’s been very hard to find something which is unique to each country. Yeah, they all seem very influenced by the Turkish cuisine. Here we have a plate of baklava and other Turkish pastries. They’re really good, and they’re all drenched in some sticky syrup. They are sticky. Tastes pretty good though.
This is a really cute part of town. We’re going to check out the fortress now, the Kale Fortress. Seems pretty cool. Like we said before, in Skopje, there are not many tourist attractions, things to go and see. They do have this one thing though, it’s called the Kale Fortress. It’s an incredible fortress on top of a hill overlooking Skopje. And we just tried to get in, and apparently we’re not allowed. This is an amazing site though, people would love to come and see because they found, a few years ago, they found remnants of people living here over 3,000 years before Christ. So it really is a place that would gain a lot of tourists. I find that kind of funny you know, you don’t have that much going for you, everyone knows about it, so the stuff that you do have You close. That’s not exactly good tourism. I really enjoyed the Old Town and the cafés around there. It’s too bad the fortress was closed. But there’s one thing that Skopje can be really proud of, and that is the fact that Mother Theresa was born here, so I think this is an important place to visit. Tomorrow we’re off to Greece, Thessaloniki, so I’ll see you there.

Over 50 travel-addicted people from many countries all over the world joined the European meeting of VirtualTourist.com members (VT Euromeet) which took place in Bitola, Macedonia on 27th May 2011.
We had great time in restaurant Grne on Shirko Sokak that was one of the best national restaurants in Macedonia. It is situated in the Old Russian consulate (now restored & protected building) on the main Magnolija Square in Bitola right next to the Clock Tower.
We enjoyed fantastic Macedonian and VT-like atmosphere, local music and dance as well as delicious hot buffet with Macedonian national dishes, salads & desert.

A Day in Girona - Costa Brava, Spain
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode David shows us what you can do in a day in Girona, Spain. Girona has a magnificent old town and charming waterfront boulevards. Spending a day in Girona will reveal its beautiful architecture and ancient history. The best part is that it's only 60 miles north of Barcelona and easily reached by bus, car or train, making it a most popular day trip destination from Barcelona.
David starts off by having his guide Carles explain a little bit about why Girona has such a fascinating history - it's geographical location at the crossroads of Spain and France has always made it a strategic point, thus highly desirable to those who wished to conquer the Iberian Peninsula. When the Romans arrived they realized that controlling Girona was the key to gaining control of the Iberian Peninsula.
One of the main things to do in the Old Town is walk along the 14th century Medieval walls. The wall stretches 1.5 kilometers and was used as a protective measure for the city's inhabitants. Carles stops to explain the purpose for the holes in the wall. He then takes David to the oldest part of the wall constructed by the Romans in the 3rd century. They built a section of the wall in a triangular shape to get unobstructed views of the river.
From the wall you get excellent panoramic views of the Old Town and the Pyrenees Mountains, making it great for taking pictures. Up next is the Gothic-style Girona Cathedral, which took over 400 years to complete! The reason for the lengthy construction is its architectural design. Instead of having columns to support the roof, it has only a single arch spanning the entire width of the church (23 meters). The Girona Cathedral has the world's largest Gothic arch.
The last stop on David's day in Girona is the Cathedral Cloister. It is a Romanesque Cloister that features a series of beautiful columns depicting figures and animal motifs. It also has a handsome bell tower.

Top 15 Places to See in Istanbul, Turkey
http://davidsbeenhere.com Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
Now time for some shopping… First stop, the Egyptian Spice Bazaar, a spice market that is primarily for tourists, but still an experience to walk through and see all the desserts, spices, and souvenirs for sale. Afterwards, some more serious shopping at the Grand Bazaar – one of the absolute best places to shop in the country! There are over 4,000 shops spanning an area of over 30,700 square feet! If you’re planning to spend a lot of time here, or looking for something in particular, we recommend you hire a guide to help. This place is gigantic!
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. This bustling intersection is a major transportation hub and meeting point. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. The top is used for pedestrian and car transit, while the bottom is full of restaurants. It’s a mix of noise, smells, and vibrant life! If you have the chance, walk it at least once. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!
