When you're shooting video, you see on your camera that you have several different clips. But when you plug the card into your computer and look at the files, you can't see the individual video clips.
If you dig deep, you'll find mysterious MTS files, but when you try to open them in a video player, it doesn't work.
How can you copy or move a single video clip? How can you open them in a video player without bringing them into your video editing software?

If you dig deep, you'll find mysterious MTS files, but when you try to open them in a video player, it doesn't work.
How can you copy or move a single video clip? How can you open them in a video player without bringing them into your video editing software?

This is a brief overview of how to archive and import AVCHD footage into Final Cut Pro X versions 10.9 and earlier. Skip to 2:30 if you want to import directly from the camera or card.
*** I use this process because I want a second copy of my footage outside of FCPX for safety -- bad things DO happen. If you don't want 2 copies, you can skip the archive process completely, or retain the archived package files until your project is complete.***
NOTE: There have been some changes since OSX 10.9 Mavericks: The finder no longer sees the Private folder as a package file. Instead, it shows up as a regular folder with an "AVCHD" package file inside. Simply use this "AVCHD" package file instead of the "PRIVATE" package file shown throughout this video. Keep it named "AVCHD" throughout the process.

NOTE: There have been some changes since OSX 10.9 Mavericks: The finder no longer sees the Private folder as a package file. Instead, it shows up as a regular folder with an "AVCHD" package file inside. Simply use this "AVCHD" package file instead of the "PRIVATE" package file shown throughout this video. Keep it named "AVCHD" throughout the process.
