Big River Man - The man who swam the Amazon
The film chronicled Martin Strel's 3,300 mile historic swim of the Amazon.
Martin Strel, is a legendary Slovenian long-distance swimmer, best known for
swimming the entire length of various rivers. Strel holds successive Guinness
World Records for swimming the Danube river, the Mississippi River,
the Yangtze River, and the Amazon River.
During his swims, he sleeps for 5 hours each day. He prepares himself for
a long-distance swim over a year and a half. It usually takes 6 to 7 months for
Strel to recover physically. His motto is:
"Swimming For Peace, Friendship And Clean Waters".
Strel was born (1 october 1954) in the town of Mokronog, in the Slovenian
region of Lower Carniola, then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia.
Strel's first two river swims were the Krka river (105 km) in his homeland,
in 28 hours in 1992, and the boundary Kolpa river (62 kilometres (39 mi)),
in 16 hours in 1993. In 2000, he swam the Danube River (2,860 kilometres
(1,780 mi)) and achieved the world long distance swimming record
(3,004 kilometres (1,867 mi)) in 58 days.
In July 2001, he achieved one more world record - 504.5 kilometres
(313.5 mi) of non-stop swimming in Danube within 84 hours and
10 minutes. In 2002, he swam the entire Mississippi River
(3,885 kilometres (2,414 mi)) in 68 days.
In 2003, he swam the Argentine Paraná River (3,998 kilometres (2,484 mi)).
On 10 June 2004, Martin started swimming down the Yangtze River
(4,003 kilometres (2,487 mi), the longest river in Asia, the third longest
in the world) in China. He reached Shanghai in 40 days on 30 July 2004,
one day before planned.
Strel swam the Amazon River, commencing on 1 February 2007, finishing
66 days later on April 7, 2007. This was a record-breaking distance of
5,268 kilometres (3,273 mi), longer than the width of the Atlantic Ocean.
He had escort boats that were prepared to pour blood into the river
to distract meat-eating fish such as piranhas.
In 2007, the Nile had been proposed as his next river, but Strel said,
"I am not going to do the Nile. It's long but not challenging enough,
it is just a small creek. The Amazon is much more mighty".
He plans to swim across Lake Arenal on September 29, 2010 as part
of his visit to an environmentalist international film festival in Costa Rica.
He plans to swim about 6 kilometres from shore and then back to his
starting point.
In June 2011 Strel completed his Colorado River Swim challenge for

Martin Strel swam the Yangtze river in China back in 2004. On the way he passed several dead bodies in the water, especially in the part before Three Gorges Dam. This clip was recorded by his team in Hubei province just before the big dam. Yangtze river is probably the most polluted river in the world.

Čovjek koji je pobijedio Amazonu, dokumentarni film
Film prati plivača Martina Strela ili Big River Mana na njegovoj posljednjoj pustolovini, dvomjesečnom plivačkom podvigu kroz najopasniju rijeku na svijetu - Amazonu. Martin je u 66 dana preplivao 5.268 kilometara ove rijeke i postao prvi plivač na svijetu koji je to učinio, te se po četvrti put upisao u Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda. Prva tri puta upisao se plivajući kroz Dunav (3.004 km), Mississippi (3.797 km) i Yangtze (4.003 km).
U ovom dugometražnom američkom dokumentarcu pratimo upornog čovjeka kojemu je tijekom putovanja, zbog zdravstvenih razloga, nekoliko puta sugerirano da odustane, no on to nije učinio. Tim više što Martin Strel ne izgleda kao prototip plivača, ima nekoliko desetaka kila previše, pije dvije litre vina dnevno, a nije mu stran niti Jack Daniels, čak i dok pliva. Na uzbudljivom putovanju prati ga mala ekipa prevođena njegovim sinom Borutom, a svakodnevna obiteljska koškanja čine ovaj film još zanimljivijim. Peruanska i brazilska plemena štuju ga kao božanstvo, a pri svakom izlasku iz vode oko njega su desetine kamera.

U 53-oj godini, za 66 dana preplivao je 5268 km najopasnije reke na svetu Tokom tog jedinstvenog podviga bio je suočen sa krokodilima, piranama i drugim smrtonosnim ribama i zmijama, rečnim vrtlozima, vremenskim nepogodama, piratima i neprijateljski raspoloženim plemenima.

River Man
"River Man" ( sample ) is the second listed song from Nick Drake's 1969 album Five Leaves Left. According to Drake's manager, Joe Boyd, Drake thought of the song as the centre piece of the album. In 2004 the song was remastered and released as a 7" vinyl and as enhanced CD single including a video to the song by Tim Pope.
Musical structure and lyrics
The song is in a 5/4 time signature and is one of the few songs Drake wrote to be played in standard tuning. The string arrangement was composed by Harry Robinson, after Drake's friend Robert Kirby felt he couldn't compose it alone, although he did most of the arrangements on Five Leaves Left.
Drake did not reveal the identity of the 'Betty' character in the lyrics, although Trevor Dann speculated that she may have been drawn from Betty Foy, a character in Wordsworth's "The Idiot Boy", a poem Drake had studied while attending Cambridge. However, the only similarity to the poem is the existence of a Betty.

Big River Man
Big River Man is a 2009 documentary film directed by John Maringouin. It follows the Slovenian long-distance swimmer Martin Strel as he swims the entire 3,300 mile length of the Amazon River, between February and April 2007.
The film was nominated for the grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and won the Excellence in Cinematography Award (Maringouin also shot the film). It is being distributed by Revolver Entertainment and the Discovery Channel.
Reception
The film has been almost universally praised, achieving a score of 90% by Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a score of 67 from Metacritic indicating generally favorable reviews. Critics praised the humor and story telling of the documentary and many compared it to a Werner Herzog documentary. One negative review came from Anthony Quinn of Independent, who called the on-screen chronicle of the swim "fuzzy and flaky".
Soundtrack score
2m1 Records recently released the soundtrack score at the beginning of 2011. In the liner notes, 2m1 Records states: "Rich Ragsdale's wonderful musical achievement defines Martin Strel and his comedic yet serious struggle in swimming 3,300 miles down the Amazon River. Going from a Pendereckian aesthetic to even post-rock and orchestral minimalism, this score is contagious in its ability to take you on a comedic yet dark subconscious emotional journey of Big River Man's eclectic protagonist." In association with KNR Productions and Producer Andrew P. Alderete, 2m1 released this album through iTunes and Amazon.

Big River Man - The man who swam the Amazon
The film chronicled Martin Strel's 3,300 mile historic swim of the Amazon.
Martin Strel, is a legendary Slovenian long-distance swimmer, best known for
swimming the entire length of various rivers. Strel holds successive Guinness
World Records for swimming the Danube river, the Mississippi River,
the Yangtze River, and the Amazon River.
During his swims, he sleeps for 5 hours each day. He prepares himself for
a long-distance swim over a year and a half. It usually takes 6 to 7 months for
Strel to recover physically. His motto is:
"Swimming For Peace, Friendship And Clean Waters".
Strel was born (1 october 1954) in the town of Mokronog, in the Slovenian
region of Lower Carniola, then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia.
Strel's first two river swims were the Krka river (105 km) in his homeland,
in 28 hours in 1992, and the boundary Kolpa river (62 kilometres (39 mi)),
in 16 hours in 1993. In 2000, he swam the Danube River (2,860 kilometres
(1,780 mi)) and achieved the world long distance swimming record
(3,004 kilometres (1,867 mi)) in 58 days.
In July 2001, he achieved one more world record - 504.5 kilometres
(313.5 mi) of non-stop swimming in Danube within 84 hours and
10 minutes. In 2002, he swam the entire Mississippi River
(3,885 kilometres (2,414 mi)) in 68 days.
In 2003, he swam the Argentine Paraná River (3,998 kilometres (2,484 mi)).
On 10 June 2004, Martin started swimming down the Yangtze River
(4,003 kilometres (2,487 mi), the longest river in Asia, the third longest
in the world) in China. He reached Shanghai in 40 days on 30 July 2004,
one day before planned.
Strel swam the Amazon River, commencing on 1 February 2007, finishing
66 days later on April 7, 2007. This was a record-breaking distance of
5,268 kilometres (3,273 mi), longer than the width of the Atlantic Ocean.
He had escort boats that were prepared to pour blood into the river
to distract meat-eating fish such as piranhas.
In 2007, the Nile had been proposed as his next river, but Strel said,
"I am not going to do the Nile. It's long but not challenging enough,
it is just a small creek. The Amazon is much more mighty".
He plans to swim across Lake Arenal on September 29, 2010 as part
of his visit to an environmentalist international film festival in Costa Rica.
He plans to swim about 6 kilometres from shore and then back to his
starting point.
In June 2011 Strel completed his Colorado River Swim challenge for

Martin je u 66 dana preplivao 5.268 kilometara ove rijeke i postao prvi plivač na svijetu koji je to učinio, te se po četvrti put upisao u Guinnessovu knjigu rekorda. Prva tri puta upisao se plivajući kroz Dunav (3.004 km), Mississippi (3.797 km) i Yangtze (4.003 km).
U ovom dugometražnom američkom dokumentarcu pratimo upornog čovjeka kojemu je tijekom putovanja, zbog zdravstvenih razloga, nekoliko puta sugerirano da odustane, no on to nije učinio. Tim više što Martin Strel ne izgleda kao prototip plivača, ima nekoliko desetaka kila previše, pije dvije litre vina dnevno, a nije mu stran niti Jack Daniels, čak i dok pliva. Na uzbudljivom putovanju prati ga mala ekipa prevođena njegovim sinom Borutom, a svakodnevna obiteljska koškanja čine ovaj film još zanimljivijim. Peruanska i brazilska plemena štuju ga kao božanstvo, a pri svakom izlasku iz vode oko njega su desetine kamera.
